transformational leadership
Opis:
Introduction: Transformational leadership is based on the trust and respect that employees feel about their leader and therefore are motivated to do much more than is expected from them. Transformational Leaders have a vision for the future, seek change and are challenged from their followers. Purpose: The exploration of the implementation of transformational leadership in nursing. Results: Since the early 1990s, transformational leadership started to be supported by nursing scholars. The first article advocating transformational leadership as a choice strategy for nursing, published in 1988. Later, it was stressed that modern health care requires new visions and enhanced models of nursing practice and the catalyst for that is transformative leadership and gradually, it was argued that successful leaders are the transformational leaders. In the 21th century it was obvious that transformational leadership was important for nursing from the growing number of published articles on the topic. Transformational leadership is affecting positively the nurses’ job satisfaction and contributes on reducing exhaustion, anxiety of nurses. Conclusions: The positive impact of transformational leaders on work performance and nurses satisfaction is evident, nevertheless much more effort has to be paid by nursing managers for increasing its use in the nursing departments of the hospitals.

The purpose of this study was to investigate intercultural sensitivity among nursing students in Turkey. This study is a cross-sectional study. It was conducted with nursing students at a university in Ankara. The sample comprised 152 nursing students at the university. This study was carried out between May 2013 and June 2013. Data were collected using an Interview Questionnaire and Intercultural Sensitivity Scale. The data were analysed using frequency, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA. The study found out that the nursing students had higher scores of cultural sensitivity (88.92 ± 12.20). It was found that senior year students, the students who speak a foreign language and the students who had chosen the school willingly had higher scores of cultural sensibility (p < 0.05). The study found that the nursing students had higher scores of cultural sensivility. To increase intercultural sensitivity of nursing students it is recommended that the maintenance strategies and the concept of intercultural sensitivity should be integrated in the curriculum of nursing education and postgraduate training programs.

Opis:
Objectives: The main objective of this article was to review the literature about the specific nursing care to adult patients with ECMO, identifying the existence of standardized care plans that optimize the quality of the care and favor the continuity of the care. Methods: A search was carried out in the following databases: CINAHL, CUIDEN PLUS, EMBASE, LILACS, MEDLINE, PUBMED. All reference lists were imported to a bibliographic manager (RefWorks), a tool used to eliminate duplicate documents. The inclusion criteria were: (1) original scientific article, (2) full text published in Spanish or English. The exclusion criteria were: (1) articles published in other languages, (2) articles in which the interventions performed on patients did not involve nursing participation. Findings: A review of 11 articles was carried out, analyzing the role of nurses and the care of patients with ECMO. It is important to highlight the importance of prior technical training and the thorough evaluation of all physiological systems and the ECMO circuit, without forgetting family support. Conclusions: The nurse must provide direct care to the patient with ECMO and to the circuit, carefully review all physiological systems and pay attention to the family members’ care. Therefore, the nurse acquires a primary role in the coordination of care and in the monitoring of the patient with ECMO.

Introduction Since 1 January 2016 certain groups of nurses and midwives (N&Ms) have been entitled to administer certain medicines to patients and issue perceptions for it (independent nurse prescribing - INP), issue prescriptions upon physician's order (supplementary nurse prescribing - SNP) and to refer patients to determined diagnostic tests. Students’ knowledge on the possibility and principles of nurse prescribing seems to be important. Aim of study To evaluate the knowledge of 1st year students of Bachelor’s studies in nursing and midwifery on the possibility and principles of prescribing authorities of N&Ms in Poland. Material and methods 2338 1st year students of Bachelor’s nursing (1941) and midwifery (398) studies from 26 state higher vocational schools of universities. Own questionnaire assessed in the pilot study; the internal reliability of measurement on the knowledge rating scale was estimated by calculating Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient Results Group of 11% to 64% (depending on a question) gave correct answers. 14 % knew criteria which N&Ms are required to meet in order to refer patients to diagnostic tests. Almost 2/3 of the interviewees also knew where to find the list of active substances allowed in medicines independently prescribed by N&Ms. The internal reliability of the knowledge rating scale was 0,389. Conclusions The knowledge of students regarding N&Ms’ prescribing powers is superficial, but most of respondents knew the crucial issues. It is necessary to correctly determine education standards and to focus on their implementation tools, so that those concerned could acquire desired competences during studies.

Introduction and aim. Palliative care is an approach to improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing problems associated with life-threatening illnesses or old age, to manage their pain, distress, and other symptoms, improving their quality of life, and providing psychological support. This study was designed to identify the care practices planned by nurses for the health issues of palliative surgical patients. Material and methods. This is a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study. The data was collected from digital records of the two state hospitals in the Western Black Sea Region of Turkey between January 2019 and January 2020. The research was completed with a total of 391 data of patients undergoing palliative surgery. Frequency and percentage distributions were used in descriptive statistics. Results. The frequency of symptoms observed in patients were determined as cough and sputum (81.8%), dehydration (73.9%), dyspnea (71.9%), fatigue (49.9%), loss of appetite-weight (49.9%), insomnia (44%), pain (37.6%), nausea (29.2%), and constipation (23.8%). The planned nursing diagnoses for these symptoms were identified as risk for falls, imbalanced nutrition, risk for impaired skin integrity, risk for infection, risk for aspiration, deficient knowledge, risk for impaired respiratory function, constipation, ineffective airway clearance, pain, risk for deficient fluid volume, sleep deprivation, impaired gas exchange respectively. Conclusion. This study highlights the insufficient planning of nursing care for the symptoms of palliative surgical patients receiving palliative care in our country. Therefore, it is recommended that palliative care nurses be supported with in-service training on appropriate care planning topics.

Opis:
Introduction: Nosocomial (also known as hospital-acquired) infections are understood as infections which develop during patient’s stay in hospital, but are not the direct cause of hospitalisation. The aim of the study: The purpose of the paper was to determine the knowledge of the nursing personnel from Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship onnosocomial infections, prevention and methods of combating them. Other addressed issues included the analysis of the work yeas and education level as related to the state of nurses' knowledge on nosocomial infections, and what are the reasons for insufficient prevention of diseases. Material and methods: The study included 208 nurses from Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Out of 208 questionnaires, 180 were completed correctly, the remaining 28 were answered incorrectly or incompletely, which resulted in their rejection. The statistical analysis was conducted using the Pearson Chi-squared method, with the significance level p>0.01 assumed to be insignificant. The study involved 124 women and 56 men. The youngest respondent was 23 years old and the oldest was 59 years old. There were 36 respondents below 30 years of age(20%), 88 in the 31-40 age group (48.9%), 56 in the 41-60 age group (31.1%). Results 1. The knowledge of the intermediate personnel about hospital-acquired infections is satisfactory. 2. Job seniority is not statistically significant with regard to the knowledge level on nosocomial infections. 3. The research revealeda statistically significant correlation between the knowledge level of the secondary staff and their education. 4. The study results show that the most common causes of insufficient knowledge on preventing hospital-acquired infections are staff shortages and inadequatefinancial resources.

Opis:
The main aims of the study were to explore the frequency of missed nursing care (MNC) among Czech hospital nurses, and to find the relationship between nurse’s job satisfaction and MNC.Material and MethodsThe sample consisted of 513 nurses from 9 hospitals in the Czech Republic. Data were collected in January–August 2019 using the standardized MISSCARE Survey questionnaire, complemented with items assessing nurse’s job satisfaction and demographic data.ResultsThe most frequently missed nursing activities were patient ambulation and emotional support to the patient and/or family. The surveyed nurses were most satisfied with being a nurse and least satisfied with the level of teamwork on their unit. The strongest correlation was found between satisfaction with the current position and satisfaction with being a nurse; there was a negative correlation between satisfaction with the current position and the overall level of MNC. There was a significant trend between the rating of satisfaction with the current position and MNC.ConclusionsNurse’s job satisfaction is associated with the level of nursing care provided; more missed care means more dissatisfaction among nurses. Background: Along with an increasing number of cancer patients, the need for cytostatic drugs is also increasing. Nursing staff are the largest professional group exposed to the potential dangers of these substances. Aim of the study: Assess the awareness of nursing staff who have direct contact with cytostatic drugs in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Material and methods: The research group consisted of 101 nurses routinely exposed to cytostatic drugs. A diagnostic survey and questionnaire technique were used along with the author’s original questionnaire. Results: Of the respondents, 58.42% (n=59) never used protective shoes while dealing with cytostatics, while 53.4% (n=54) never used long-sleeved, waterproof uniforms; 49.50% (n=50) did not apply half masks, and 34.65% (n=35) failed to protect their eyes with protective glasses. The most common cause of not using the protective equipment was identified as lack of time (72; 71.29%). Deficiency of training on protective measures while working with hazardous cytostatics was cited by 37.62% (n=38) as the reason for their behavior, while almost 22% of them claimed that their employer did not provide them with a sufficient amount of protective equipment for individual use. The older, more experienced and higher-educated the staff, the higher awareness among them about the need for using PPE. Conclusions: Higher-educated and more experienced nursing staff should constitute the source of ‘good practices’ and educate younger undergraduate colleagues theoretically and practically. Employers and management staff should provide employees with more training on the correct application of protective measures and increase the intensity of control of the use of personal protective equipment.

The article explores the problem of nursing as a practical discipline and suggests that there are several kinds of nursing science. Following the lead of Jacques Maritain and Yves R. Simon, the authoress begins with an account of the distinguishing characteristics of theoretical knowledge, to which the term “science” has historically been applied, and distinguishes it from practical knowledge or prudence. Next she reviews Maritain and Simon’s discussion of two intermediate levels of inquiry that share some characteristics of both science and practical knowledge. Finally, using the writings of several nurse theorists whose seminal ideas in this area have established a basis for nurse theorist’s discussion of these issues, she distinguishes four kinds of nursing inquiry which range from the very theoretical to the very practical.

Introduction and aim. Night nursing care ensures well-being, peace, and security allowing a patient to enter into the deep sleep phase. This study aims to analyze the relationship between an assessment of caring and therapeutic services and the opinion of in-patients on their experience and satisfaction with night nursing care. Material and methods. A questionnaire developed by the authors and the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale were used in this study. This study was conducted in the eastern region of Poland in the Podkarpackie province. The study included 585 patients. Results. Tasks analyzed resulting from care and therapeutic functions, in the patient’s opinion, had a significant impact on the overall assessment of nursing care. Meeting the expectations regarding night rest (experience of nursing care) and satisfaction showed the strongest correlation. Tasks resulting from therapeutic functions showed an average correlation with the exception of planned medical care. Conclusion. The level of implemented health services by nurses at night significantly influences the overall assessment of the quality management system in health care.
