Opis:
The most complete succession of the Callovian-Oxfordian boundary recorded in European Russia is the Dubki section, where the authors have carried out integrated paleontological and magnetostratigraphical studies. A continuous sequence of the West-European biostratigraphic units in the interval from the Lamberti to the Cordatum Zones is present in this section, and 10 ammonite biohorizons have been recognized. Additional data concerning nannofossil assemblages, foraminifers, ostracods, belemnoids and the paleomagnetic polarity for the Dubki section are also presented. The Callovian-Oxfordian boundary, marked by FAD of the genus Cardioceras, is placed at the base of the scarburgense biohorizon. The paleontological richness and continuity of the succession make the Dubki section a possible GSSP candidate for the Callovian/Oxfordian boundary. Correlation of the Dubki ammonite succession with those of the other GSSP candidates, Redcliff Point and Thuoux, is proposed. Other sections studied in Russia have yielded some additional observations on the Callovian-Oxfordian boundary beds. Although in the Dubki section the praemartini biohorizon is not found, its existence is proved, however, in Orenburg region (Khanskaya Gora). In the Datchovskaya section (Northern Caucasus) the paucicostatum biohorizon is characterized by an unusual combination of Subtethyan and Boreal ammonites, including Kosmoceras, which is not typical of the paucicostatum biohorizon outside the Northern Caucasus.

Opis:
Possible plate tectonic controls on faunal diversity dynamics have been discussed in the geological literature for around 50 years. The new model of plate tectonic processes is here linked to Jurassic generic diversity (simple α-diversity) of brachiopods. This comparison offers three observations, four hypotheses and three unresolved issues. Most importantly, changes in the global plate root mean square speed coincided with brachiopod diversity dynamics, which can be explained hypothetically by either environmental disturbance triggered by more active plate motion or activity of any process (such as eustasy) tied to plate tectonic mechanisms and with an impact on marine benthic communities. It is also established that global generic diversity dynamics of brachiopods during the Jurassic coincided with the regional picture as established for the Northern Caucasus and the Swiss Jura Alps; this coincidence is difficult to explain with regard to plate tectonics. These and other speculative considerations do not clarify the role of the plate tectonic factor in Jurassic generic diversity dynamics of brachiopods, and, thus, they indicate important issues for further research.

Opis:
In the cold periods of Quaternary climatic fluctuations, many temperate species underwent severe range contractions, and their survival during these periods was associated with climatically more favorable regions, so-called glacial refugia, from which subsequent range expansions took place. In this regard, the relative roles of the Southern (“main”), Northern (i.e., cryptic northern), and Eastern European (e.g., Colchis) refugia in shaping the evolutionary history of European temperate plants should be evaluated. In this study, we investigated the phylogeographic structure of Primula vulgaris, a European mesophilous species, by comparing DNA sequences derived from the nuclear (nrITS) and the plastid (trnL-trnF and rpl32-trnL) genomes of specimens covering the entire distribution range of the species. The variability in flower morphology was also studied on an area-wide scale with geometric morphometry. Our results clearly show the importance of the northern and eastern refugia (the Carpathian Basin and Colchis) as sources of genetic variation among European mesophilous plant species. Primula vulgaris spread initially from the Colchis refugium westwards, and a proportion of the colonists survived during the last glacial period in the Carpathian Basin, which may have served as a secondary center of diversity from which all Europe was subsequently populated.
