Opis:
One of the least developed countries in the world, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), maintains extremely numerous armed forces. There are many aspects for political analyses in the context of the North Korean army. This problem is intensified, especially by complicated international situation in the region and the lack of comprehensive information on the actual state of affairs in the regime of Kim Jong-un. What is important in this matter, are the real capabilities of this army in the area of military equipment, training of soldiers, and advances of the technological research. In this context, the condition and prospects of development of the local economy which provides the funding for the army should be analyzed as well. After the changes in the political leadership which followed the death of Kim Jong-il, it is also worth considering, how the power of the army affects the prospects of the current regime. Analyzing the internal situation, the next important problem discussed is the meaning of North Korean generals for the duration of Kim Jong-un’s regime. We should consider, whether the army would still be the protector of the present order, or if it could become the first factor of change, starting with it seizing power in the North Korea.

Opis:
The implementation of socialism in North Korea required the large-scale involvement of women in economic relations. In order to align the rights of women and men in social life, the government pursued a policy of gender equality, conducting extensive advocacy among the female population aimed at a transformation of the understanding of women’s social roles and the nature of femininity. In the original context of women being encouraged to be workers and passionate contributors to the construction of the socialist state, the traditional stance on women as caring mothers and wives was supplemented with internationalist rhetoric on womanhood. However, with the transition to the Juche-oriented socialism, the discourse on women was modified, increasing the emphasis on motherhood and childrearing and reducing internationalism. Based on an analysis of the women’s magazine The Korean Woman (Joseon Nyeoseong), the present study analyses discourses on motherhood and childrearing in 21st century North Korea. The preliminary results of the research show that, while motherhood remains an essential component of the discourse on women, it is formulated in terms of building a powerful socialist state.

In 2017, Korean crisis escalated as Donald Trump began “war of words” with DPRK’s chairman Kim Jong-un. Each threat both leaders made might eventually be understood by the other party as a declaration of war. Donald Trump wanted to “clean up the mess” left by previous US administrations and solve the problem of North Korean nuclear program. However, his actions were inconsistent: he threatened in a very North Korean way “total destruction” only to emphasize later that it was not a “preferred option.” This article explores how “war of words” was a significant cause of the escalation of the Korean crisis.

While North Korea embarked on a gradual reform and opening program almost 30 years ago, the levels of economic cooperation with the outside world is still very low. While many scholars tend to explain these low levels by Pyongyang’s alleged “autarkic” or “irrational” policies, we rather argue that a shift of perspective is needed to try to understand the DPRK economic policies better, past and present.

It will consider the interplay between nationalism, identity and narrative and the nation’s forests, especially the role they have played within North Korea’s sense of the authenticity of its own topography. The paper will consider Pyongyang’s forest present, and contemporary focus on afforestation and arboreal practice in today’s North Korea.

During the decolonisation of Africa between the 1950s and 1960s, the newly independent countries looked for state-building ideas. Africa in this period of history was also a battleground of ideologies, which were represented by the Global Powers – the US and western states; the USSR and its allies, such as North Korea.2 Due to some aspects of socialism, like anti-imperialism and anti-colonialism, these kind of ideologies found fertile ground. One of them was also the Juche, which was promoted by North Korea. During many years until today many offshoots of this ideology have taken root in Africa.

Opis:
The article is devoted to analysis of the Russian position on this issue of Korean reunification and how it is conceptualized on the divided peninsular. It uses a comparative analysis of North and South conceptions of the reunification process and posits that the conceptions of both sides are moving closer to each other by step to step. The USSR authorities supported all North Korean ideas on methods for Korean reunification, but did not approve of North Korean plans to escalate tensions in South Korea. In contrast, authorities of the Russian Federation prefer to conduct a pragmatic policy and pursue a policy of supporting peaceful and democratic processes towards Korean reunification. The Russian authorities are also attentive to the steps taken by South Korea regarding the North. Such a policy helps the Russian Federation preserve peace and the status quo on her Far Eastern frontiers.

North Korea often tries to hide the results of decades of communist authoritarian leadership and economic mismanagement. The military-first policy has caused a lack of economic development and half of the population is living in miserable conditions, suffering an acute humanitarian crisis. The UN has called for urgent aid, but to avoid it from being diverted into the military sector and the elite, it should be channeled directly to the vulnerable population and flow independently of the denuclearisation talks. There is a need of active diplomacy, international cooperation and engagement to enhance the standard of living of the North Korean people.

Opis:
This article focuses on relations between Poland and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea after 1989. Before 1989, bilateral relations between these countries were very close. As of now, the behavior of North Korea toward Poland is based on a rational behavior. The Polish foreign policy toward North Korea is within the EU framework, which supports an evolutionary change in character of the North Korean regime. Poland is involved in North Korea through different fields, especially such as the humanitarian one.

Opis:
Forecasts predicting the reunification of the Korean Peninsula were common throughout the 1990s. Since then, enthusiasm for such predictions has dampened, and though the fundamental assumption of reunification remains, predictions of when and how this will happen have been more restrained. Reunification leaves two unresolved yet interdependent issues: reunification itself, which is the urgent challenge; and the strategic issues that emerge from reunification, which have the potential to fundamentally transform strategic relations in the region of Northeast Asia. Within this context, this paper examines the prospects of Korean reunification against the background of the interstate relations. Initially, it will establish the framework from which such scenarios will emerge: the historical background of the division, the extreme differences between the two states, the role played by the North Korean nuclear threats and the impact of the September 11, 2001 on the interstate relations, and finally general situation and relations in the East Asian region. Then, three possible scenarios of the unification will be developed: through peaceful integration, through the fall of North Korea or through a war. Summing up, even the death of Kim Jong Il will not bring change in the domestic and foreign policy of North Korea which is going to continue an aggressive approach toward the South. In the short-term reunification is definitely not in the interest of the current ROK administration, and the South has no intention of encouraging it. None of the considered scenarios envisions early reunification, and it seems that for the future, the status quo on the Korean Peninsula will remain.

This paper deals with the reality of North Korea’s education and its middle school education. North Korea still maintains its own curtain and remains isolated from the rest of the world. For that reason, it is very difficult for an individual researcher to get closer to the reality of North Korea’s education. To overcome the limitation, this article actively utilizes a means- interview with defectors who live in South Korea. To understand the current situation of North Korean education, the author interviewed 38 students. It is very useful in order to know the reality that cannot be accessed in the official way. This article firstly examines the general goals of North Korean education and the characteristics of the school curriculum. Next, this paper describes the features of North Korea’s middle school students’ life. Through examining the educational situation of North Korea, the principles of North Korean education have been revealed as fostering newly developed communists. Furthermore, it is a principle that the texts included in North Korea’s national language textbooks should stick to the communist partisanship and reflect socialist patriotism.

So she departed the area for the U.S. Naval Base at Yokosuka, Japan for repairs.
