Opis:
Spent Nickel–metal hydride batteries can be sources of valuable metals such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, rare earths and toxic chemicals. The recycling of these materials is necessary from both economic and environmental points of view. In this study the nickel is leached in acid solution followed by precipitation and thermal decomposition or by cementation. The affecting parameters such as acid type and concentration, time, temperature and solid/liquid ratio were investigated. The maximum of leached nickel could be obtained in 3M sulfuric acid at 65°C for 60 min with solid-to-liquid ratio of 30 g L-1. The liquid film is a more suitable model for demonstrating the kinetics of the nickel leaching. Thermal decomposition of the precipitated nickel dimethyl-glyoxime was employed in preparation of nickel oxide. Nickel was separated from aqueous solution by cementation on zinc. The cementation process follows pseudo first-order kinetics and diffusion controlling steps. The yield was 91% of the original nickel content.

Opis:
In 2008, nickel received the shameful name of the “Allergen of the Year.” According to dermatologists the frequency of nickel allergies is still growing, and it cannot be explained only by fashionable piercing and nickel devices used in medicine (like coronary stents). Occupational exposure of several million workers worldwide has been shown to give rise to elevated levels of nickel in blood, urine and body tissues. In these cases, workers are exposed to airborne fumes and dusts containing nickel and its compounds and therefore inhalation is the main route of uptake. Nonoccupational sources of nickel exposure for the general population include mainly drinking water and food. Recently, tests of kitchen kettles showed substantial leaching of nickel into drinking water when boiled in kettles with exposed nickel-plated elements. Three types of adverse health impacts as a result of exposure to nickel are discussed in the text. Acute health effects generally result from short-term exposure to high concentrations of pollutants. Chronic noncancer health effects may result from long-term exposure to relatively low concentrations of pollutants. Inhalation of nickel also can cause cancer of the lungs, nose and sinuses. Cancers of the throat and stomach have also been attributed to inhalation of nickel. However, the exact mechanism by which nickel causes cancer is still questionable and needs further investigation. The most popular hypotheses to explain this phenomenon are presented in the text.
W 2008 nikiel zyskał niechlubne miano „alergenu roku”. Niedawno w testach czajników kuchennych z odsłoniętymi elementami grzewczymi, wykonanymi ze stopów niklu wykazano uwalnianie znacznych ilości niklu do wody pitnej. W pracy omówiono najbardziej popularne hipotezy wyjaśniające to zjawisko.

The paper presents the results of the studies of nickel-graphene composite coatings deposited by the electrochemical reduction method. A bath with low concentration of nickel ions, graphene as dispersed particles and organic compounds were used for deposition of the composite coatings nickel-graphene. The results of investigations of coatings deposited from the electrolyte containing 0.33, 0.5 and 1 g/dm3  graphene and two surface-active compounds were shown. The particles content in the coatings, the surface morphology, the cross-sectional structures of the coated samples, thickness and internal stresses were measured. Voltammetric method was used for examination of the corrosion resistance of samples of composite coatings in 0.5 M NaCl solution. The obtained results suggest that the content of incorporated graphene particles increases with an increasing amount of graphene in plating bath. The applications of organic addition agents was advantageous because it caused compressive stresses in the coatings. All of the nickel-graphene composite coatings had better corrosion resistance than the nickel coatings.

Opis:
This paper investigates the dissolution mechanism of a lateritic nickel ore from the Caldag Region of Manisa in Turkey. The ore sample contained 1.2% Ni, 24.8% Fe, and 0.062% Co. The optimum leaching conditions were found to be temperature 80 oC, particle size -74 μm, H2SO4 concentration 200 g/dm3, solids ratio (by weight) 10% and leaching duration 8 h. The extractions of 98.2% Ni, 98.6% Fe and Co 98.9% were obtained under these conditions. Additionally, the effects of additional substances such as NaCl, Na2S2O5, Na2SO4, and KCl were investigated in order to decrease the leaching duration. The results showed that the additives accelerated the leaching kinetics and achieved nearly the same nickel and cobalt extractions at the end of 4 h compared to the results obtained after 8 h without the additives. If the additives containing chlorine were used, it was determined that the iron extraction showed no increase, although both the nickel and cobalt extractions increased.

The aim of the study was to analyze the content of Ni in fractions of 1.0–0.2 mm, 0.2–0.1 mm, 0.1–0.063 mm, 0.063–0.02 mm, and <0.02 mm of river bottom sediments and plants (root, stem, leaf) of broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia), yellow water lilies (Nuphar lutea), and cowbane (Cicuta virosa). Nickel content in bottom sediment was slightly higher than the geochemical background. The largest amounts of Ni were associated with the finest fraction, while the smallest with the thickest fraction. The highest content of this element was recorded at the point Ełk Barany, which was connected with developing industry in the city of Ełk. All of the tested plants showed greater Ni contents than the amount naturally occurring in plants. In most cases, most of Ni was associated with plant roots, and the least with leaves. It has been proven that aquatic plants can be good indicators of the aquatic environment status.

Nickel has been listed as a priory control pollutant by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Compared with other methods, the combination of vegetation and the addition of mineral sorbents to heavy metal-contaminated soils can be readily applied on a large scale because of the simplicity of technology and low cost. Halloysite and zeolite, among others, can be used for this purpose. A greenhouse study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of using natural zeolite, as well as raw and modified halloysite for the remediation of simulated Ni-contaminated soil. The soil was spiked with five doses of nickel, i.e. 0 (control), 80, 160, 240 and 320 mg·Ni kg-1·soil. The average accumulation of heavy metals in nickel-contaminated soil was found to follow the decreasing order of Ni>Zn>Cr>Cu>Pb. The highest reduction of Pb content was observed in soil samples taken from pots containing 80 and 160 mg·kg-1 of Ni along with the addition of modified halloysite. The strongest effects were caused by natural zeolite, which significantly reduced the average content of chromium. Contamination at 320 mg Ni·kg-1

Opis:
The microbiological activity associated with exmining soil remediation can be considered useful to accelerate the contaminant degradation. The use of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and organic matter exhibits potential in improving ex-nickel mining soil quality. The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of SRB in several organic fertilizers to reduce sulfate and nickel ions, and to increase pH of soil from nickel in mining areas. This study used the bacteria collection of the Soil Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Muslim Indonesia. Those were previously isolated from two cultivating pond of milkfish in the Kuri area of Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The soil samples were collected from ex-mining areas of the Vale Indonesia Enterprise in Soroako, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Those were mixed with organic fertilizers, generated from sugarcane sludge, manure, and Quickstick (Gliricidia sepium) leaves, each with 50 and 100 g doses. The 5 kg soil samples were put into a pot and mixed evenly with organic fertil- izers. A general linear model (GLM) repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was adopted to analyze the data. The results of this study indicate that the application of SRB and fertilizer was effective in reducing concentration of sulfate and nickel. Among the three types of organic fertilizers, manure was effective in reducing sulfate and nickel concentrations, while Quickstick fertilizer was the more effective in stabilizing pH level. Fertilizer doses exhibited a significant effect on decreasing sulfate and nickel concentrations, but it exhibited no significant effect on stabilizing pH levels. At 10 days after treatment (DAT), the sulfate concentration decreased from 2,530 ppm to 1,443 ppm in treatment of SRB and manure with dose of 50 g and 1,363 ppm with that of 100 g. At the end of the observation (30 DAT), those were decreased to 1,217 ppm in treatment of SRB and manure with doses of 50 g and 1,167 ppm with that of 100 g. Among the three types of organic fertilizers used, Quickstick demonstrates the more effective reduction rate. At 10 DAT, pH increased in SRB treatment by 7.06 at a concentration of 50 g and 7.01 at a concentration of 50 g. At the end of the observation (30 DAT), the pH became 6.67 at a concentration of 50 g and 6.82 at a concentration of 50 g. The nickel concentration decreased from an origin concentration to 1,950 ppm in treatment of SRB and manure with doses of 50 g and 1,690 ppm with that of 100 g. Thus, the application of manure fertilizer and the addition of SRB is recommended for bioremediation of sulfate and nickel from ex-mining soil.

Introduction. Bone trace elements levels including nickel (Ni) depend on biological and environmental factors: age, gender, remodeling state, exposure to occupational and environmental pollution, smoking, diet, and surgical implants. Objective. The aim of this study was to determine Ni concentrations in bones of femur heads obtained from patients with osteoarthritis. Materials and method. A total of 111 samples of hip joint bones (cartilage, cancellous bone and compact bone) collected from patients from north-western Poland were examined. Ni concentration was determined by ICP-AES (atomic absorption spectrophotometry). Results. It was found that differences in Ni concentrations were statistically significant between cartilage and compact bone. Cartilage Ni concentrations were higher in patients with fractured femur neck than patients with osteoarthritis. Furthermore, higher Ni levels were also found in samples obtained from smokers compared to nonsmokers. In cancellous bone, higher Ni concentrations were found in samples from patients who had received implants than those without them. Moreover, higher Ni concentrations in cancellous bone were found in patients occupationally exposed to heavy metals than in those not exposed. Conclusions. The bone tissue reflects long-term exposure to Ni and may be used as a bioindicator to study the process of Ni accumulation in the human body.

Adsorption of Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions onto the waste powdered activated sludge biomass (PWB), which was obtained from the biological wastewater treatment plant, was investigated in this experimental study. The effects of contact time, pH, temperature, initial sorbate and sorbent concentrations on the adsorption were determined. The BET surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter of PWB were found to be about 0.51 m2/g, 0.0053 cm3/g, and 41.4 nm, respectively. Considering the R2  value, qexp  and qcal , the Langmuir and Freundlich models were well described for Cu(II) and Ni(II) adsorption, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) and Ni(II) onto the PWB could be better simulated by the pseudo-second-order kinetic mechanism than the pseudo-first-order, intra particle diffusion and Elovich models. Thermodynamic aspects of the adsorption of heavy metals were also investigated. Considering the applied desorbing agents for reuse of PWB for Ni(II) recovery, desorption cycle is not feasible due to the deterioration of the PWB structure.

This paper presents the results of research of Ni/diamond composite coatings produced by electrochemical reduction method. Research was focused on composite coatings with nickel matrix and diamond as a disperse phase and for comparison purposes on nanocrystalline nickel coatings. Ni/diamond composite coatings were produced in baths with different content of nanodiamond powder. The structures of the dispersed phase and the composite coatings were analysed by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Measurements of selected properties of the coatings were performed, including roughness, microhardness, adhesion and abrasive wear resistance. The research results indicate that the produced coatings have a compact structure and good adherence to steel substrate. Moreover, nanocrystalline Ni/diamond composite coatings exhibit greater hardness and reduced abrasive wear resistance compared to nanocrystalline nickel coatings.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of liming and the application of waste organic material, i.e. sewage sludge, on the content and distribution of nickel in the fractions extracted with the BCR procedure from soil contaminated with this metal. The study was carried out on soil after a 3-year pot experiment, which included the following factors: I – nickel used in the incremental amounts 0, 50, 100 mg Ni kg-1 soil; II – liming (0 Ca and Ca according to 1 Hh of soil); and III – the addition of sewage sludge (with and without the addition of sewage sludge at the introducing dose of 2 g C kg-1 soil). The test plant was cocksfoot harvested four times (four swaths) in each plant growing season. The total content of nickel was determined with ICP-AES and its fractions with the three-stage BCR procedure. The introduction of nickel into the soil resulted in an increase in its total content and in all fractions as well as in its percentage in the exchangeable fraction. Liming reduced the mobility of nickel and decreased its content in the reducible fraction, whil inccreasing it in the residual fraction. The application of sewage sludge contributed to an increase in the total content of nickel in soil and its proportion in the oxidizable fraction. Liming and the application of sewage sludge reduced the mobility of nickel. Lime and waste organic material (i.e. sewage sludge) were found to be suitable materials for reduction of the mobility of nickel in soil contaminated with this metal.
Celem pracy była ocena wpływu wapnowania i wprowadzenia do gleby odpadowego materiału organicznego – osadu ściekowego na zawartość i rozmieszczenie niklu we frakcjach wydzielonych wg procedury BCR w glebie zanieczyszczonej tym metalem. Badaniami objęto glebę po trzyletnim doświadczeniu wazonowym, w którym uwzględniono następujące czynniki: I – nikiel stosowany we wzrastających dawkach (0, 50, 100 mg Ni kg-1 gleby); II – wapnowanie (0 Ca i Ca wg 1 Hh gleby); III – dodatek osadu ściekowego (bez dodatku i z dodatkiem osadu ściekowego w dawce wprowadzającej 2 g C kg-1 gleby). Rośliną testową była trawa kupkówka pospolita (Dactylisglomerata L.), zbierana każdego roku w czterech pokosach (odrostach). Ogólną zawartość niklu oznaczono metodą ICP-AES, a jego frakcje trzystopniową metodą BCR. Wprowadzenie niklu do gleby spowodowało nie tylko wzrost jego zawartości ogólnej i we wszystkich frakcjach, a jednocześnie zwiększenie procentowego udziału we frakcji wymiennej. Wapnowanie gleby ograniczyło mobilność niklu, zmniejszył się jego udział we frakcji redukowalnej, zwiększył we frakcji rezydualnej. Zastosowany osad ściekowy spowodował zwiększenie ogólnej ilości niklu w glebie i jego udziału we frakcji utlenialnej. Wapnowanie i osad ściekowy ograniczyły mobilność niklu. Wapnowanie oraz zastosowany w doświadczeniu odpadowy materiał organiczny – osad ściekowy okazały się dobrymi materiałami zmniejszającymi mobilność niklu na glebach zanieczyszczonych tym metalem.

The rapeseed oil was hydrogenated with sulphur modified nickel catalyst. The parameters of hydrogénation process were found not to affect the physical properties of fats having the same hydrogénation degree. The conditions of fractional crystallisation from acetone of hydrogenated rapeseed oil were optimised for a high yield of the fat replacing cocoa butter. At 22°C and 2°C for the first and second crystallisation, respectively, such product was obtained with an over 60% yield as the middle fraction out of three that were isolated. The degree of hydrogenation of the fractionated fat did not affect the physical properties of the cocoa butter replacer, although it affected the yield. The physical properties of the fractions after the crystallisation of hydrogenated fat resulted mostly from high differences in the content of saturated and trans-unsaturated fatty acids.

Opis:
Many etiologies are held accountable for nasal septum perforations. Topical nasal drug usage, previous surgeries, trauma, nose picking, squamous cell carcinoma, some rheumatological disorders such as granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener granulomatosis), some infectious diseases such as syphilis and leprosy are among the causes of the perforations. Occupational heavy metal exposures by inhalation rarely may also cause nasal septum perforation. Here, we present a 29-year-old patient without any known diseases, who is a worker at a metallic coating and nickel-plating factory, referred for investigation of his nasal cartilage septum perforation from an otorhinolaryngology clinic. The patient questioning, physical examination and laboratory assessment about rheumatic and infectious diseases were negative. There was a metallic smell in the breath during the physical examination. The analysis showed serum nickel level at 31 μg/l and urine nickel at 18 μg/l (84.11 μg/g creatinine). Other possible serum and urine heavy metal levels were within normal ranges. Nickel exposure is usually together with other heavy metals (chromium or cadmium), it is rarely alone. Nickel ingested by inhalation usually leads to respiratory problems such as reduced olfactory acuity, ulcers, septum perforation or tumors of the nasal sinuses. This case demonstrates the importance of occupational anamnesis and awareness of diagnosis. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(6):963–967
