Opis:
Since China’s environmental policy is defined as top-down “authoritarian environmentalism”, political propaganda and media censorship heavily affect the communication of climate change. Hence, conducting an investigation of climate change communication in the context of China is a valuable exercise. This article uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to investigate how the Chinese Press reported on, and discursively constructed climate change through the employment of a series of discursive strategies, over a 20-year period, 2000-2020. The findings indicate that news reporting on climate change was in consistent alignment with the ruling Communist Party’s environmental policies during these two decades, facilitating the consolidation of the government’s hegemony.

Aim. The article discusses the status of the Greek Catholic Church from 1948 to 1950. It also presents how this period was presented through media. Since it is possible to investigate this aspect within the framework of a comparison of several media channels, we have decided to introduce the comparison through the perspective of the daily-newspaper Rudé právo. Methods. The findings of our research study are based on the data collected from archival and documentary sources, as well as professional studies and monographs related to the above-mentioned topic. Results. Based on our research topic, we can understand how the attitude towards the Greek Catholic Church changed after the events of February 1948 and what impact the change of regime had on its functioning. Regarding media, we can observe how the pressure on the Greek Catholic Church changed in relation to the regime change and individual historical events, and how the media expressed its opinion on the Church. Conclusion. Media is not only a source of information for people, but it also creates public opinion, and therefore, it was extremely important to control this state apparatus in the past. We must understand that availability of information in the 1950s and today is significantly different. Catholic periodicals were almost non-existent and thus, people often received misleading or false information. Through our research, which is presented in the tabular presentation of data, we can discover the increasing pressure against the Church, and the response of the public to the Church.

The purpose of this paper was to assess the evolution of sports coverage regarding gender in online newspapers in two western societies Spain and the United States, in a period of ten years (2004 vs. 2014). A total of 2,951 articles with athletic content from the online newspapers usatoday.com and elmundo.es were analyzed. The variables registered were gender, placement in the newspaper, word count, inclusion of photographs, and the sports disciplines. The results show a significant reduction in sports articles in the two online newspapers for both genders. This reduction resulted in a decrease in the variability of sports articles. Further, there was a significant imbalance in sports news between the two genders. There was a significant reduction in the proportion of sports articles in both online newspapers for women, significantly reducing the accessibility of articles about women’s sports. The gender imbalance was higher in the Spanish newspaper than in the U.S. newspaper. The gender imbalance was higher in the Spanish newspaper than in the U.S. newspaper. Both online newspapers showed an image of sport that is male-orientated, focused on elite-level sport and with an overall low number of sport disciplines.

In the present paper we analyze the relation between political competence and media exposure. Taking into account the dynamic transition of media environment related to growing impact of the internet (web 2.0) we made several assumptions about the influence of traditional and new media on political sophistication. We hypothesize that the impact of the media on political competence is related to qualitative, rather than quantitative factors; competence rises with the way a media consumer interacts with the medium, rather than on the amount of time spent with the medium. The empirical analysis based on a mass public opinion survey confirms our assumptions: there is a positive relationship between media exposure and political competence, however various kind of media differ as far as their influence is concerned. Moreover the use of interactive internet features (participation in information exchange) is a key factor shaping competence.

Opis:
News coverage has a major impact on the interpretation of news events and the response towards these events by public and policy makers. The study intended to investigate the extent of children's rights representation in newspapers in Pakistan. The aim was to determine the coverage, type of the News and level of placement in four selected newspapers (Dawn, The Express Tribune, Jang, and Nawa-i-waqt). A content analysis of 316 news editions of selected samples was conducted over the duration of one year (November 2017 to October 2018). The purpose of content analysis is to provide advocates with a comprehensive basis for how children’s problems are presented in the news. A systematic sampling technique is used for the collection of data. The Nawa-i-waqt newspaper covered the maximum news stories (792 in number) as compared to the other dailies. Furthermore, most of the stories about children were found on the inside pages of newspapers which shows that children’s issues received minimal coverage. This paper argues that the press should take more responsibility by adequately informing children and making them aware, so that the attention of the government and the public can be aimed at tackling child problems in society.

Multi-dimensional analysis
Saudi English
World Englishes
Opis:
Aim. This multi-dimensional analysis explores prominent lexico-grammatical features in English used in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The research focuses on the linguistic variation in editorials in Saudi English newspapers. The study’s goals were to create a specialised corpus of Saudi English, to determine how Saudi English differs from British English, and to establish Saudi English as an independent form of English, allowing syllabi designers to serve ESP course developers better. Method. Douglas Biber's multi-dimensional analysis (2006), a corpus-based, quantitative, empirical, and comparative technique for studying linguistic variety, was used by the researchers for analysing this language diversity. Quantitative and functional techniques were employed in the research. The authors examined and statistically analysed the acquired data to establish the communicative function of press editorials. Biber’s (2006) tagger was used to tag the data. Then, using the analysis of variance (ANOVA), the linguistic differences between Saudi publications and British newspapers were determined. Results. The results indicate that Saudi Newspaper Editorial (SNE) is more informational, explicit, abstract, and less argumentative than British Newspaper Editorial (BNE). On one dimension, SNE produces non-narrative while BNE produces narrative discourse. Except for D2, the findings of the internal comparison reveal that there are minor variations in the mean score of Saudi newspaper editorials. Saudi Gazette creates a non-narrative discourse on D2, whilst Arab News produces a narrative one. Cognitive value. The findings support the claim that English spoken in Saudi Arabia qualifies as a distinct variation of English.

Opis:
The research was conducted to determine the content of Cr, Cd, Ni and Pb in soil and plant biomass after application of newspaper waste. The pot experiment was conducted in the years 2010 and 2011 in the greenhouse and included the following objects: NP-0 soil without addition of newspaper, NP-1 the soil with addition of 1 % of newspaper and NP-3 the soil with addition of 3 % of newspaper. Addition of newspaper was calculated relative to the dry weight of the soil material. The study was conducted in pots containing 5.50 kg of air-dried soil material. Two plants were grown in the experiment: spring rape, ‘Felix’ c.v., in the first year and naked oats, ‘Siwek’ c.v., in the second. Rape was collected at the end of the flowering stage (73-day vegetation period), and oats at grain milk stage (75 days of vegetation). After preparation of plant material and soil, content of trace elements was determined by ICP-OES method on a Perkin Elmer Optima 7300DV apparatus. The results were converted to absolute dry weight of the material. Application of newspaper to soil did not increase (except for cadmium) the contents of lead, chromium or nickel in the aboveground parts of the plant. Studied trace elements were accumulated mainly in the plant roots. Roots contained on average from 51 to 82 % more of the test elements in relation to the aboveground parts. Higher amount of newspaper (3 %) added to the soil led to a higher accumulation of studied trace elements in the roots and lower in the plant aboveground parts. The addition of newspaper to the soil caused a reduction in acidity. Newspaper introduced to the soil generally did not increase the total content of trace elements.
Przeprowadzone badania miały na celu ocenę zawartości Cr, Cd, Ni i Pb w glebie oraz w biomasie roślin po aplikacji papieru gazetowego. Doświadczenie wazonowe prowadzono w latach 2010 i 2011 w hali wegetacyjnej. Doświadczenie obejmowało następujące obiekty: NP-0 – kontrola (gleba bez dodatku papieru gazetowego), NP-1 – gleba z 1 % dodatkiem papieru gazetowego oraz NP-3 – gleba z 3 % dodatkiem papieru gazetowego. Dodatek papieru gazetowego obliczono w stosunku do suchej masy materiału glebowego. Badania prowadzono w wazonach mieszczących 5,50 kg powietrznie suchego materiału glebowego. W doświadczeniu uprawiano dwie rośliny, w pierwszym roku rzepak jary odmiany ‘Feliks’, natomiast w drugim owies nagoziarnisty odmiany ‘Siwek’. Rzepak jary zbierano w końcu fazy kwitnienia (73 dni wegetacji), a owies w fazie dojrzałości mlecznej (75 dni wegetacji). Większy dodatek papieru gazetowego (3 %) do gleby skutkował większą akumulacją badanych pierwiastków śladowych w korzeniach, a mniejszą w częściach nadziemnych roślin. Dodatek papieru gazetowego do gleby spowodował zmniejszenie zakwaszenia. Wprowadzenie do gleby papieru gazetowego na ogół nie wpłynęło na zwiększenie ogólnej zawartości badanych pierwiastków śladowych.

Child rights can be considered through the different characteristics of human rights, according to the classification “3P” as Protection, Provision, and Participation. The (potential) distinction between child rights and human rights recalls the former perspective about children’s not seen as human beings. The development of the fields on childhood studies such as “children’s participation” and “agency” are also related to the concept “empowerment,” which indicates the power relations between children and grown-ups. The main purpose of this paper is to debate all those notions through the children’s own experiences by referring to various examples in the frame of Power of children as the Fourth-P right. After discussing how children have the power to “challenge the authority,” I will indicate some examples from Little Review, as a remarkable experience of children’s participation. Lastly, I will try to reveal what today’s children consider the topic of child rights by sharing the findings of a pilot research with children, which I realized in 2019 December. In this study, twelve children who were 11-year-old then, wrote their commentaries about children’s rights and the requirements to have the rights. Thus, in the final part of this paper, the rights will be addressed through children’s perspectives.

The aim of the article is to shed light on ongoing situation about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the lenses of newspaper heading analysis. Newspapers manipulate newspapers heading to persuade and influence public opinion so that political actions may be carried out. Unfortunately, such manipulation can lead to drastic consequences such as violent solutions. Through discourse analysis this study compares and contrasts different newspapers and magazines headlines of the Palestinian Israeli conflict. The researcher has used these newspapers and magazines to show attitudinal differences as reflected in discourses of the newspapers. The researcher collected his data from newspapers and magazines through the Internet. The newspapers and the magazines belong to two communities, each of which has its point of view regarding the conflict. Four major key concepts have emerged in the data: OCCUPATION, TERRORISM, SETTLEMENTS, and PEACE PROCESS. Through talking about these concepts and events, analysis of news headlines, grammatical and lexical metaphor, euphemism, stereotypes, and other rhetoric and linguistic devices are used to achieve intentions.

The article is devoted to the publication of “A Mortifying Disclosure” in the British newspaper “The Times” on August 24, 1917, with criticism of British foreign policy towards the Ottoman Empire, in particular the actions of Louis Mallet, the British ambassador in Constantinople. The mentioned publication, as well as the discussion caused by it, are little covered in historiography. Much more information is provided by the primary sources, represented by the documents of the British National Archives (The National Archives, TNA), and also by the memoirs of the participants of researched events. In the mentioned article, Louis Mallet was criticized for short-sightedness and excessive credulity. According to the author of the publication, the Turkish grand vizier deceived the British ambassador, even when the choice of the Ottoman Empire in favor of entering the war on the side of the Central Powers became obvious. In turn, the fact that British diplomats failed to find out about the existence of the German-Turkish treaty became the basis for sharp criticism of the Foreign Office at all. In response to this publication, Louis Mallet spoke in defense of his actions in Constantinople. He was supported by other Foreign Office officials, including former Foreign Secretary Edward Grey. They argued that the Foreign Office was fully aware of the pro-German course of the Porte, but intended to delay the state of war with her as far as possible in order to prepare for the defense of Egypt, the Suez Canal and India. These circumstances led to the accommodating position of British diplomacy. The characteristics of both Mallet himself and the grand vizier of the Ottoman Empire, Said Helim, are separately analyzed from the point of view of historiography and their contemporaries. Also the importance of the defense of India and Egypt, its importance as a key factor in shaping the course of British diplomacy was researched. Finally, the work contains the author's interpretations and evaluations of the analyzed events

At present, there is no societally relevant political newspaper in Germany that is based on a Christian worldview. The Rheinischer Merkur, founded in 1946 shortly after the end of the Second World War and shut down by the German Bishops’ Conference in 2010, was a newspaper of this kind. It went beyond the Christian milieu in the fulfilment of its mission in the public arena. The closure of the Rheinischer Merkur obscures even today the decisive role it played in the elaboration of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany and the substantial quality of the paper. This essay sketches the history of the Rheinischer Merkur and its self-understanding, as well as its decline, locating these in the context of the journalistic autonomies and media-ethical tensions to which every journalistic medium is subject.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono zalety użycia ilościowej analizy cyfrowych źródeł pierwotnych w badaniach historycznych, wskazując, w jaki sposób może ona kwestionować przyjętą ortodoksyjność i tworzyć nowe wglądy. Autor użył bazy danych cyfrowych wersji brytyjskich czasopism faszystowskich z lat trzydziestych XX wieku w celu stworzenia dużej, spójnej i miarodajnej próby faszystowskiego dyskursu we wspomnianym okresie. Używając metody kodowania, zarejestrował wszystkie wzmianki o Żydach występujące w tej próbie. Umożliwiło mu to prześledzenie w czasie rozwoju antysemityzmu faszystów w kontekście jego ilości, typologii i uwydatnienia w dyskursie. Użyta metoda – w połączeniu z bardziej tradycyjną analizą źródeł –kwestionuje różne przyjęte i powszechnie uznawane aspekty właściwej historiografii. Dokładniejsza linia czasu pozwala mu w bardziej przejrzysty sposób wyjaśnić motywy i ideologię przyświecającą stosunkowi faszystów do Żydów.
This article illustrates the benefits of employing quantitative analysis of digitised primary sources in historical research, demonstrating how it can challenge old orthodoxies and create new insights. The author has used a database of scanned copies of British fascist newspapers from the 1930s to create a large, consistent and representative sample of fascist discourse during this period. Employing a coding methodology, the author has recorded all mentions of Jews within that sample, enabling him to trace over time the evolution of the fascists’ antisemitism, in terms of its quantity, typology and prominence within their discourse. This approach—in combination with more traditional analysis of sources—challenges various longestablished and widely accepted aspects of the relevant historiography. In particular, the author demonstrates that the consensus among historians regarding the chronological evolution of British fascist antisemitism is false, and instead he presents a new, fivestage model of its development.
