Opis:
In the article we present data collected from 50 people who lost their motor ability in accidents. Analyses of narrative interviews conducted with the accident victims suggest that a positive affective tone of narratives about the accident itself and the accident’s influence on later life is connected to higher levels of posttraumatic growth. Other factors facilitating the experience of posttraumatic growth were hope and basic trust, as well as the theme of agency present in the narratives.

This paper explores the space of conviviality between newcomers and host communities exemplifying the author’s way as a researcher to be at the same time an activist in Italy. The author investigates her position as an adult educator and researcher to focus on how the informal process of research on adult education has a ‘transformative’ effect at the meso (social) level dimension of interaction. Group experience is life experience and food is one of the most powerful connective tools humans have: it stimulates all of the senses, evokes deep memories and connects one with the wider system of interaction and complexity. In this meso-level dimension newcomers and native citizens interconnected their senses through sharing food. The paper includes different languages and styles: autoethnographic field notes of informal conversations between migrants and Italians involved in the research, transcriptions of dialogues and correspondence with research participants and photos taken during the field of research. All texts and images are analyzed to imagine new forms of embodied research in adult education.

Many travelers-writers have described the characteristics of the areas visited from a critical point of view, with wit and sense of observation. One of the most significant and unknown works concerning this literary current is the tale of the trip from Paestum to Policastro made in 1828 by C.T. Ramage: his sketchbooks are not only a description of the evidence of the past and of the archaeological remains of the Ancient Greece, but a small geo-history of the Cilento (shortly before its insurrection of that same year), as the first stage of a journey that returns a fresco of the South of Italy as it was before the process of Italian unification, respect to its agricultural landscapes, customs and dietary habits, attitudes, superstitions, society, culture, religious and political afairs, comparable with the present context of the same territories.

Opis:
The article will present the main assumptions of the information marker method, which can be used for recognizing the characteristics of conspiracy theories conveyed in the content of informational messages – texts, statements, recordings, etc. The proposed method draws on the conspiracy thinking model CONSPIR (Lewandowsky & Cook 2020) and has a practical component. However, the technique presented in the paper constitutes a modification and addition to the original proposal. First, it deals with a problem frame that is different from that of CONSPIR, since it is applied to formulated information messages. Hence the marker method is not an instrument for analyzing cognitive attitudes or patterns of conspiracy thinking. Secondly, the proposed tool is profiled in terms of content focused on scientific issues (mainly pertaining to the natural and applied sciences). Third, given the characteristics and structure of the communication under consideration, I replace the widely used term “conspiracy theory” with the more universal concept of “conspiracy narrative,” which seems to reflect more adequately the specific features of such information messages. Fourth, given the more specific purpose of the marker method compared to that of the CONSPIR model, I will try (where possible) to refrain from citing specific examples of conspiracy narratives, referring to singular events and personal examples. Consequently, to use a phrase widely used in methodology, the presented technique can be applied to all cases of a given type.

The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis that positive affective tone of narratives is connected to the experience of posttraumatic growth among transplant patients. Kidney transplant patients (N = 51) and liver transplant patients (N = 48) participated in the study. In the first stage, about 10 weeks after transplant, the participants told two stories about important, freely chosen events from their lives. During the second meeting 10-12 months later we measured posttraumatic growth. Results indicated that the affective tone of narratives about past events was associated with the level of post-traumatic growth measured 10-12 months later. This proves that the affective tone of narratives about life, understood as a relatively constant individual characteristic, promote posttraumatic growth.

Opis:
On May 26, 2016, the police raided 43 cannabis dispensaries in Toronto, Canada, making 90 arrests. This article aims to describe the narrative of the responsible state agencies concerning the police raid and compare it to the narrative of those who opposed it, such as activists, as well as consumers and sellers of cannabis. While such concepts as moral entrepreneur, moral panic, and moral crusade have traditionally been used to study those in power, I will employ them to explore both the state narrative and ways in which counterclaims-makers resisted it. In order to do so, I will further develop the concept of moral entrepreneurship and its characteristics by relating it to studies of moral panics and social problems. This article will be guided by the following question: How did each party socially construct its cannabis narrative, and in what way can we use the concept of moral entrepreneurship to describe and analyze these narratives as social constructions? I have investigated the media coverage of the raid and ethnographically studied shops in Toronto in order to study the narratives. My findings show that both parties used a factual neutral style, as well as a dramatizing style. The later includes such typical crusading strategies as constructing victims and villains and presenting the image of a dystopian social world. In order to explain the use of these strategies, we will relate them to the shifting wider social and historical context and to the symbolic connotation of cannabis shops in Toronto in particular and in Canada as a whole.

The study assessed children’s ability to develop narratives and express ideas. It comprised 120 children (5-10 years), and differences in relation to age, sex, and economic area were measured. To this end, we compared four schools in 2 economic areas (poor and average). We used 2 picture and 2 story re-telling tasks designed to elicit narrations reflecting the generation of ideas in response to visual and auditory stimuli. Significant differences for age and sex but not economic areas were found. Suggestions are made for balancing brain activity and developing more creative approaches in teaching and assessment.

Opis:
The aim of the current study was to examine how children describe an experience of losing their close ones. We analysed how children structure and make sense of their experiences of losing somebody. We also wondered, if, basing on the analysis of the experiences’ descriptions, it is possible to determine factors which make it easier or harder to handle the death of somebody close. The experiment was exploratory and descriptive, so the questions asked were as follows: (1) How do children describe their experience of losing somebody close? (2) Are there any significant qualitative differences in the way of describing the trauma connected with the loss of somebody close? The study was based on the psychological assumptions of the theory of experiencing a loss, on the division of the mourning into stages, and also on shaping and giving a meaning to the frame of mind by a narrative. Forming own needs can be a healing factor, and experiencing emotions, both positive and negative ones, helps to get through the process of mourning. In accordance with the stages of mourning it was assumed that a possibility of a farewell with the departed ones, even symbolic, influences the adaptation process after the loss and, therefore, the psychological wellbeing. It was also assumed that an important factor helpful in building a coherent history of a loss is a support of adults from the child’s surrounding. The study showed a number of correlations and relationships between analysed variables. The obtained results can be an implication for further analysis and they can set direction for following research.

In the present investigation, 15 first term university students were faced with 80 context-based idioms in English (L2) and Swedish (L1) respectively, 30 of which were in the source domain of animals, commonly used in both languages, and asked to explain their meaning. The idioms were of varying frequency and transparency. Three main research questions were thus addressed:1. How well do students master idioms in their L2 as compared to their L1?2. How do (a) degrees of transparency, (b) idiom frequency and (c) the choice of source domain affect students’ L1 and L2 comprehension?3. To what extent is context used when interpreting L1 and L2 idioms? Results show that while the frequency of an idiom does not appear to play a part in whether it is comprehended or not in either language, the degree of transparency is of great importance in students’ L2. Also, students make extensive use of context in their L2.

Computational and interactive technologies are ubiquitous and play an increasingly important role in our daily lives. From the oral language to the written word and printing, we have been building and expanding our capacity to provide information and present it through fictional or non-fictional narratives, allowing newfangled models through which we learn and interpret the world. As new representations transformed these new digital environments, through procedural, encyclopedic, spatial, and participative affordances, narratives have also changed and afforded a set of different scenarios, where users are given the possibility to experience and understand the same system by exploring different paths. Interactive digital narratives are open and complex works that cross different approaches, research fields, and emerging technologies, but are always shaped by interaction, from creation to reception. They also explore social, cultural, ideological, and aesthetic elements, where it is significant to comprehend how these computational formats can help us to allow new positions and points of view, modeling how we construct meaning, examining the relationship between user and technology and how human beings perceive the world. Analyzing the aesthetic qualities of the Netflix production Bandersnatch through immersion, agency, and transformation, and combining these with an analytical framework that studies the dimensions of user experience, we develop a close reading, that analyzes the development of aesthetic relations and its transformational potential in interactive digital narratives.

This paper analyzes the contemporary context of nostalgia, recollection and narration of childhood events on the basis of field notes collected by means of different methodological techniques. The narrative quest for the past produces interpretations of past events and experiences and opens the space to the feeling of nostalgia, or nostalgic stories. This paper aims to present a small portion of the captured everyday life in which games and toys appear as any other subobject or pseudoobject of nostalgia, but with a distance from one’s own childhood experience. We utilize Donald Braid’s approach which opens the space for observing the transmission of oral personal narratives and the transmission of emotions in and through language.

The purpose of this article is to describe the perception of time by men and women in managerial positions in business organizations (and the specific actions resulting from that perception). The differences and similarities in perceiving time by representatives of the two sexes were reconstructed on the basis of nearly fifty narrative interviews conducted within the framework of two projects: ’The Temporal Aspect of Managerial Careers’ (concluded in 2005) and the ongoing ’Spatial Aspect of Managerial Careers’. In the context of the titular gender perspective, what is noteworthy is the vision of their careers that organizational actors’ declare and realize, in that they perceive them, despite the contradictions resulting from the gender difference, as being planned and realized through persistence.Key categories describing this type of attitude are those of the ’self-made man’ and ’self-made woman’. Differences in ways of realizing the ideal of the inner-directed manager, which are the effect of a culturally conditioned perception of the role that men and women ’should’ fill, are also important. Analysis of the data collected was conducted on the basis of grounded theory methodology

This CEEMR special section examines encounters and interactions between migrants as newcomers and their hosts. Our exploration derives from harnessing, first, a sense of belonging and, second, social interactions as two interrelated processes of encounter. To the extent that the host develops a sense of belonging with the newcomers and cultivates social interaction with them as the others, the newcomers would become visible and encounters followed by meaningful interactions with them would be possible. To look at this from another perspective, the newcomers develop a sense of belonging with their hosts as they encounter them and engage in social interactions with them in their everyday. We note that there is ample research that takes a critical stance on integration and inclusion already but there is still space to explore encounters and interactions in greater detail and why they matter for newcomers and host societies to establish intimacies with each other.
