Opis:
The marine pollution is rarely debated from the perspective of land-based sources of pollution under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This article centres not only on a land-based source of pollution of the sea, but also a very particular one – the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi accident. Apart from causing severe infrastructural damage and posing a radiation-related threat to the public, Fukushima has had a lasting impact on the marine environment, too. Especially, since the operator of the plant has so far been unsuccessful in completely eliminating the radioactive leakage into the seas. This article considers the actual impact of the accident on the marine life along with the relevant recovery and remediation measures aimed to limit said impact, all in the light of the provisions of UNCLOS. Especially, with regard to its problematic (rather underdeveloped) enforcement and sanctioning system which should be more balanced, considering the various contemporary sources of pollution of the seas. Notwithstanding, UNCLOS will most likely further strengthen international cooperation with the ultimate aim of preventing the pollution of the world’s oceans.

Opis:
Lysophospholipids have long been recognized as membrane phospholipid metabolites, but only recently lysophosphatidic acids (LPA) have been demonstrated to act on specific G protein-coupled receptors. The widespread expression of LPA receptors and coupling to several classes of G proteins allow LPA-dependent regulation of numerous processes, such as vascular development, neurogenesis, wound healing, immunity, and cancerogenesis. Lysophosphatidic acids have been found to induce many of the hallmarks of cancer including cellular processes such as proliferation, survival, migration, invasion, and neovascularization. Furthermore, autotaxin (ATX), the main enzyme converting lysophosphatidylcholine into LPA was identified as a tumor cell autocrine motility factor. On the other hand, cyclic phosphatidic acids (naturally occurring analogs of LPA generated by ATX) have anti-proliferative activity and inhibit tumor cell invasion and metastasis. Research achievements of the past decade suggest implementation of preclinical and clinical evaluation of LPA and its analogs, LPA receptors, as well as autotaxin as potential therapeutic targets.

Opis:
The aim of this work was to perform the real case study for the US Surry Nuclear Power Plant which was touched down by tornado in 2011 causing the electrical switch yard destruction and loss of offsite power. Probabilistic methods have been applied to assess the reliability of the reactor shutdown and effective heat removal after this accident. The reactor protection system and auxiliary feedwater system were thoroughly analysed in the context of their safety features designed to prevent the reactor core damage. The emergency power system reliability has been also considered due to the fact that some components of the safety systems are electrically operated. Moreover, time-dependent analysis has been performed in order to address the level of damages after an extreme external event like tornado. Depending on the severity of such events the time required to restore the electrical grid may be significantly different and longer than 24 hours. The reliability and requirements for safety systems are changing with time and these changes have been taken into account as well.

Accumulation of technogenic 137Cs in higher plant roots and above-ground part and comparison of 137Cs and 40K transfer from roots to the above-ground part of plant as well as distribution within above-ground part of plant under environmental conditions were investigated. Parallely, the results of the investigations of 137Cs accumulation in the roots and shoots of test-organism Lepidium sativum L. in the model hydroponic system aqueous solution-solid phase-plant were analyzed. Peculiarities of transfer of this radionuclide from roots to shoots during the entire plant growing period under experimental conditions were determined. 137Cs activity in the tested plants of meadow ecotop was on an average 6-fold lower than in the plants of swamp and 10-fold lower than in the plants of forest ecotop. Differences in 137Cs and 40K transfer from roots to the above-ground part of plant and their distribution in plants indicate particular biological metabolism of these radionuclides in plants. Increased levels of 137Cs in soil practically did not affect the 40K transfer from roots to the above-ground part of plants. The results of investigations under natural and laboratory conditions show that increasing contamination of growth medium with 137Cs caused higher accumulation of this radionuclide in roots but its transfer from roots to the above-ground part of plant decreased or changed insignificantly. 137Cs transfer from roots to above-ground part under natural (Artemisia vulgaris) and laboratory (Lepidium sativum) conditions was rather similar.

Opis:
Abstract Results of systematic measurements of radionuclide activity concentrations in the air and deposits from January 1997 to July 2000 near the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (hereafter detoted as NPP) are presented. The data on NPP produced radionuclides 60Co and 54Mn in deposits and results of calculation are used for establishment of their distribution near NPP. Water-soluble and water-insoluble radionuclide fractions in the airborne effluents of NPP were investigated. The possibility to evaluate the deposition factor of water-soluble and water-insoluble radionuclides from the NPP jet by comparing the experimental data in the NPP stack and the environment is shown.
