Opis:
Music has the ability to evoke different emotions in people, which is reflected in their physiological signals. Advances in affective computing have introduced computational methods to analyse these signals and understand the relationship between music and emotion in greater detail. We analyse Electrodermal Activity (EDA), Blood Volume Pulse (BVP), Skin Temperature (ST) and Pupil Dilation (PD) collected from 24 participants while they listen to 12 pieces from 3 different genres of music. A set of 34 features were extracted from each signal and 6 different feature selection methods were applied to identify useful features. Empirical analysis shows that a neural network (NN) with a set of features extracted from the physiological signals can achieve 99.2% accuracy in differentiating among the 3 music genres. The model also reaches 98.5% accuracy in classification based on participants’ subjective rating of emotion. The paper also identifies some useful features to improve accuracy of the classification models. Furthermore, we introduce a new technique called ’Gingerbread Animation’ to visualise the physiological signals we record as a video, and to make these signals more comprehensible to the human eye, and also appropriate for computer vision techniques such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Our results overall provide a strong motivation to investigate the relationship between physiological signals and music, which can lead to improvements in music therapy for mental health care and musicogenic epilepsy reduction (our long term goal).

Autism is a developmental disorder which is difficult to recognize and diagnose. The present study examines the effectiveness of music therapy intervention based on improvisational techniques with the elements of Creative Music Therapy by Paul Nordoff and Clive Robbins and improvisational techniques by Tony Wigram (such as imitating, frameworking, dialogues, holding) on  developmentl of children with Autism (two boys diagnosed with autism - case 1. and case 2), especially in verbal and nonverbal communication, disturbance behavior patterns, cognitive and social-emotional areas.  The results indicate a positive outcome in two music therapy observing tools: Scale I Child – Therapist Relationship in Coactive Musical Experience Rating Form and Scale II Musical Communicativeness Rating Form. The tables indicate the intensity of interaction between the therapist and the subject during the music therapy process (including communication skills, cognitive skills and behavior patterns). The results of case 1 are indicated in Scale I and Scale II and  show a significant effect of improvisational music therapy. The important findings from the analysis of behavior in the sessions were Stability and confidence in interpersonal musical relationship, Activity relationship developing, (scale 1.). The results of the case 2. show small changes in musical behavior when it comes to Stability and confidence in interpersonal musical relationship, but in Activity relationship developing the indicators show a lot of changes between sessions. The results of the research indicate that  music therapy intervention has a positive outcome and may be an effective method to increase functioning of children with autism.

Opis:
The paper is focused on explaining the concepts of music therapy and music philetics at school. Music philetics is defined as an artistic - pedagogical discipline with a very close relationship with music therapy. It tries to create his own, new ways, procedures with the basis in music therapy, but require a different procedure and approach within the implementation. Music philetics is a newly emerging discipline standing on the border of music education and music therapy. It is beneficial in schools where teachers use different working methods with music, rhythm, and voice. The text deals with comparing concepts and explanations of the primary missions of both music therapy and music philetics in the educational process.
W artykule porównano koncepcje i wyjaśnienia podstawowych misji muzykoterapii i filetyki muzycznej w procesie edukacyjnym.

Our experience tells us the power of music on human body and mind. Moreover a series of psycho-physiological studies has revealed the positive effects of music on human autonomous nervous system such as alleviating the symptom of the hypertension. However little has been known about the effects of music on human endocrine system, which plays the dominant role for forming our life. In this study, the effect of music on the secretion of the salivary cortisol, a major glucocorticoid hormone, was investigated in a laboratory experiment. In a stream of stress psycho-physiological study, cortisol is considered as a feasible stress biomarker. In the experiment ten healthy male students were exposed to music, noise, and silence condition followed by a simple but stressful calculation task. As a result, the significant difference in the cortisol responses among the condition was observed; the salivary cortisol was decreased after the music treatment. This result plausibly demonstrated the effects of music on human hormonal secretion and might imply the power of music.

Opis:
The article presents therapeutic actions toward restoring linguistic and communicative competence, and its aim is to show how music therapy enriches the methods of speech‑language rehabilitation. The rise of music therapy and speech‑language pathology as scientific disciplines was gradual and started almost exactly at the same juncture, i.e. at the beginning of the 20th century. The origins of both go back in time to the remote past, and both are characterized by an interdisciplinary nature. The methods of music therapy are in line with the speech‑language therapy scenario: – eurhythmics, initially supporting education and upbringing, stimulates psychomotor development in a versatile manner, – speech‑movement therapy supports general and motor development and aids speech capabilities, – the Good Start method is applied for children with reading and writing difficulties and has a corrective‑compensatory influence, – mobile music recreation stimulates the development of children suffering from cerebral palsy, – high‑frequency sounds in the Tomatis method have a therapeutic effect for memory disorders, school‑related difficulties, dyslexia, autism, and emotional disorders, – singing, which is a traditional method of music therapy, is widely applied in speech therapy for neurological disorders and in the treatment of stammering, as well as in psychosocial rehabilitation.

Opis:
Study of musical-acoustic influences, which are used to improve the functional state of a person, as well as her/his neurophysiological or psychological rehabilitation, is very relevant nowadays. It is related with a large number of conflict situations, significant psychological and informational overloads of modern human, permanent stress due to the pandemic, economic crisis, natural and man-made disasters. This work examines the effect of listening to low-frequency music on the percentage of alpha, beta, delta, and theta waves in the total spectral power of the electroencephalogram in the frequency band 0.5–30 Hz. To obtain rhythms of the brain the spectral analysis of filtered native electroencephalogram was used. For statistical analysis of neural oscillations the Student’s t-test and the sign test were implemented with usage of the Lilliefors normality criterion and the Shapiro-Wilk test. Statistically significant differences were identified in alpha, theta and delta oscillations. For the beta rhythm presented music did not play any significant role. An increase in the activity of the alpha rhythm in the temporal (for 2.20 percentage point), central (for 1.51 percentage point), parietal (for 2.70 percentage point), occipital (for 2.22 percentage point) leads of the right hemisphere and the parietal (for 1.74 percentage point) and occipital (for 2.46 percentage point) leads of the left hemisphere and also of the theta rhythm in the temporal leads of the left hemisphere (for 1.13 percentage point) were observed. The downfall of delta rhythm in the frontal lead of the left hemisphere (for 1.51 percentage point) and occipital in both hemispheres (for 1.64 and 1.33 percentage points respectively in the left and right hemispheres) was detected. These may indicate that listening to low-frequency compositions helps to restore the brain in physiological conditions at different functional overload levels, decrease the level of emotional tone, and promote relaxation.

Opis:
The skin is one of the first organs that manifest disorders of homeostasis occurring in the body. Chronic diseases that manifest themselves as skin problems are often associated with severe stress and the accompanying anxiety, uncertainty and pain, which consequently reduce the quality of patients’ lives. Both stress and dermatoses trigger a cycle of neurohormonal reactions in the body that affects the functioning of the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. The data presented in this article indicate a relationship between stress, the functioning of the immune system and the quality of life of patients with chronic dermatological diseases. The article stresses the necessity of a holistic approach to skin problems in cosmetology, which is a very important element of its care and can decrease stress. Therefore, we believe that care and beauty treatments in combination with aromatherapy and music therapy can complement classical therapy. By reducing stress levels and improving the patient’s health, they can increase the quality of life.

Opis:
Music therapy has been internationally recognized as a health-promoting profession since the end of World War II, and music therapists have been conducting research in neonatal intensive care since the 1990s. Music therapy professional training was established in Poland in 1973 at the Music Academy in Wrocław, and Polish music therapists have recently begun to seek specialization to work within neonatal intensive care. The commencement of the multi-site international randomized controlled trial LongSTEP, Longitudinal Study of music Therapy’s Effectiveness for Premature infants and their caregivers, has provided the impetus for Polish music therapists to begin offering music therapy services in neonatal intensive care. Thus, engagement in research marks the critical first step in the development of music therapy in neonatal care in Poland. This perspective article examines the current state of experimental research on music therapy in neonatal care and explores its implications for future research in Poland by (1) presenting the clinical aspects of prematurity; (2) summarizing experimental research on music therapy in neonatal intensive care; (3) identifying gaps in the related evidence base; (4) discussing recent developments in international music therapy research; (5) contextualizing music therapy in the Polish neonatal health care system; (6) presenting advanced training in neonatal music therapy, and (7) discussing how culturally relevant aspects of neonatal settings in Poland might impact future research. There is preliminary evidence that music therapy plays a beneficial role for preterm infants and their primary caregivers during the neonatal period; however, research examining long-term impacts and longer-term intervention is needed. Researchers in Poland are poised to make a significant contribution to the international evidence base related to music therapy in neonatal care, and further exploration of particular facets of the Polish neonatal health care system that will impact the delivery of music therapy is warranted.

Opis:
The paper introduces the topic of the Musical Assertiveness Training (MAT), developed in 2014, based on the application of music therapy and mixed arts therapies. The method is based on the latest worldwide achievements in the field of assertiveness training and adopts them for training based on the use of primarily music and art. The MAT-programme is divided into the cycle of twelve music-therapeutic sessions and leads step by step to the basic skills of assertive behaviour. It is designed as a workshop and has been used so far in in the process of educating future pedagogues both as an educational and therapeutic method, supporting the development of emotional, communication and social competences. The article describes the basic concepts of assertiveness and refers to the wider theory from which it originates and to which the innovative training refers such as: the cognitive theory of social learning by Bandura (modelling), the theory of multiple intelligences by H. Gardner and the concept of self-efficacy, self-presentation and self-esteem.
