    In both Eastern and Western traditions, political discourse and its relation to identity have been studied. The focus of this paper is the construction of identity and self-presentation strategies in the discourse of Mubarak of Egypt during the time known as “the Arab Spring”. This study aims to answer questions about how Mubarak constructs the various identities evident in his discourse, what kinds of resources are brought into effect, and how the multiple identities contribute to the aims of political discourse in general. While Mubarak recruited the considerable coercive power at his disposal, at the same time, he sought the power of discourse to construct and defend his legacy. Furthermore, he used the power of discourse to project his account of the external interference in domestic affairs and to recruit shared identities (based on nationalism).

    Opis:
    American foreign policy towards Egypt during almost three decades of Mubarak’s career as first vice-president, and later president of Egypt. The material underlines the impact of Mubarak’s personality, career and political style on the overall shape of American cooperation with Egypt. Egypt is described as an inherent element of the American foreign policy-making processes. Its most notable role is that of a mediator and facilitator in the Arab-Israeli conflict – in fact, Mubarak at times ventured his country’s position in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to conduct and support peace talks, much to the US approval. In return, Egypt could count on considerable financial aid to maintain its already commendable military might, and develop civic structures. Mubarak’s power was always associated with his status as metaphorical ‘eyes and ears’ of Egyptian army – a position that brought the Egyptian president considerably appreciation on the American part. Mubarak is shown as a leader whose rein relied on cold calculation, pre-planning, unwillingness to improvise and act quickly, and ‘controlled’ risk taking.

    Egypt is a place with a long tradition of female participation in revolutions. After years of Mubarak’s despotism, women joined the revolution once again. As a result, they had to deal with the violation of women’s rights. When Morsi was removed, women were again at the top of political topics. The new constitution was described as the most progressive for women. Sisi has been a president for short time but he is already called the president of women. However women still face problems. They defended themselves from the Muslim Brotherhood’s rules by supporting Sisi, but did they really win by overthrowing the regime of Mubarak?
