Opis:
In recent years, the interest in the occurrence of heavy metals in the natural environment has been observed. The heavy metal contamination can lead to serious environmental problems. The aim of the study was to estimate the total content of heavy metals: Ni, Cu and Co, in the surface layer of the bottom sediments of the Sokołda river and its tributaries, and to determine the relationship between the grain size and scope of their metal content. Determination of metals in the bottom sediment samples was performed by means of atomic absorption spectrometry (ASA). The research on the Sokołda river and its tributaries showed low levels of Ni, Cu and Co. It was proven that the majority of studied metals were contained in the smallest clay fraction <0.02 mm. On the other hand, the least studied metals were accumulated in 1.0–0.2 mm and 0.2–0.1 mm fractions. The 1.0–0.2 mm and 0.2–0.1 mm fractions contain around 80% of the tested metal forms, while the 0.02–0.063 mm and <0.02 mm fractions – only a few percent. This speaks for the determination of metals in the 1.0–0.1 mm fraction, that contains both coarser and clay fractions, and thus most reliably reflects the actual load of pollutants carried by the sediment. Studies have shown that the main sources of pollution in the Sokołda river catchment are primarily surface runoff, and to a lesser extent, wastewater (municipal and industrial).

For the purposes of this Issue Paper, metals most commonly found at Superfund sites will be discussed in terms of the processes affecting their behavior in soils, as well as in those of the laboratory methods available to evaluate this behavior. The retention capacity of soil will also be discussed with regard to the movement of metals between the other environmental compartments: ground water, surface water, or the atmosphere. Long-term changes in soil environmental conditions, due to the effects of remediation systems or to natural weathering processes, are also explained with respect to the enhanced mobility of metals in soils.

Opis:
The exposure of heavy metals in the Drenas site – Kosovo has risen dramatically in the last 30 years because of mining and smelting activities. The study investigated the heavy metal in soil, accumulation in different parts of apple trees near the industrial sites of Drenas. The accumulation ratio values of heavy metals were calculated to assess the potential health risks. The mean concentrations of the heavy metals in the soil were in the following order of magnitude Ni > Zn > Fe > Cr > Cu > Pb > Cd > As, while that in the apples were in the order of magnitude Ni > Cr > Fe > Cu > Pb > Zn > Cd > As, in the leaves – Fe > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd > As and in the shoots – Zn > Fe > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd > As. Compared to control, the contents of analyzed metals from plant tissues of apple trees in the contaminated area were significantly higher (p<0.001). The concentration of Ni, Pb, Cr, Fe etc. in the apple tissue increased along with the heavy metal content in soils in the polluted area. The high accumulation ratio values for Pb (1.1), Cd (0.62), Cr (0.93) and Ni (0.46) were characteristic for the investigated species and indicate the accumulation ability.

Leaching of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni and Cr) from hazardous waste originating from steel works (slag) has been investigated. Contaminant leaching behavior from monolithic waste materials in the function of time was examined. There was established the cumulative leaching of elements per surface area of waste material and the impact of the duration of the leachant contact with the waste on the leachability. The types of processes accompanying the release of heavy metals were determined as well. Surface wash-off and dissolution were dominant processes during the leaching of the analyzed elements. Chromium was the only element whose release from the sample was controlled by diffusion when subjected to leaching in a liquid of pH 7. Due to the low levels of heavy metal leaching in relation to their concentrations in the samples, it seems that longer duration of the tank test can contribute to the release of additional amounts of the heavy metals.

Opis:
Many industries, especially mining and metallurgy, deal with solutions containing ions. In some cases, these metal ions need to be concentrated and recovered from solutions and sometimes removed from wastewater. The ion flotation method has been applied for wastewater and water treatment, recovery of precious and platinum group metals, preconcentrating of rare earth elements, selective separation of multicomponent ions from dilute solutions, and analytical chemistry. It has been employed to separate heavy metals from a liquid phase using bubble attachment, originated in mineral processing. In these cases, ion flotation has an important place among other methods because it is a cheap and practical method. In this study, many ion flotation studies, especially applied at laboratory scale, were reviewed. This method gives very successful and promising results in removing heavy metals with toxic effects from wastewater and selective separation of metal ions from very low concentrated solutions. Ion flotation may take place in industrial scale operations with the new developments in flotation machines and collectors with better selectivity, high efficiency, lower cost, and environmental friendliness.

Opis:
Heavy metals can come from two types of sources: natural and anthropogenic. Natural origin of heavy metals associated with: volcanic eruptions, weathering of rocks, processes soil - creative, forest fires or evaporation of the oceans. Anthropogenic sources of pollution these elements is primarily the burning of fuels, both in power and heating plants and power plants as well as regional and local municipal boiler houses, as well as in the home. In addition to the natural environment gets heavy metals as a result of non-ferrous metals and iron, waste incineration and transport. The rapid development of technology and the changes that are occurring in the world today largely affect on the environment. One of the primary sources of pollution of the biosphere are industrial plants, which emit both gaseous substances (eg. Carbon monoxide, sulfur and nitrogen) and dust, containing all sorts of toxic substances. For the serious consequences of the development of civilization and industry should be spread include heavy metals [6]. Included in the atmosphere, dust and heavy metals fall to the ground parts of plants and enters the soil. Shall be collected by the roots of plants or animals grazing on the roads and thus incorporated into the food chain. These elements are not biodegradable.

Opis:
Research conducted in many research centers all over the world indicate health threats resulting from the presence of lead in the blood gradually decreases to the permissible amount. Lead accumulation in a living organism results in adverse changes in different body systems, symptoms of which include various behavioral changes. They can be reflected in grades obtained by the child at school. The aim of this paper was to establish whether the blood lead level diversify the boys in the respect of their school performance during consecutive years of primary education. The amount of lead in blood of 94 boys at the age of 10 has been measured; subsequently, the group of subjects was divided into two subgroups; the first one (termed in this paper „L”) comprised students whose Pb-B level was lower than 6 μg/dl (4,846 μg/dl on average) and the second one (termed „H”) comprised boys whose blood level exceeded 6 μg/dl (9,256 μg/dl on average). Academic performance in the arts, scientific subjects, geography and natural science in respective groups was assessed. Said procedure was replicated in respective subgroups after a year when the subjects were 11 years old. It was ascertained that the academic performance of the boys with higher blood lead levels deteriorated in scientific subjects and tended to worsen also in other school subject groups. Performance of the students whose blood lead level was lower in the initial examination remained unchanged or improved.

Opis:
There are a number of factors to keep our health in good condition. One of them is the role of the proper amount of nutrient metals which play the important role in many reactions in the body and it becomes increasingly evident that keeping a balance level of nutrient metals in every organ is very important for maintaining a healthy body, although metals comprise only a fraction of total body weight (mg). They play crucial role for many body functions in the metabolic regulations of the human body including transporting oxygen, normalizing the nervous system. The present investigation is focused to find out the different nutrient metals that exist in the vegetable Cucurbita pepo (squash) a source of natural nutrient metals abandance and to determine the relative concentration of each metal element. Investigation has been performed on the skin, the flesh, the seed, the leaves, the stems and the roots of squash to determine the relative levels of concentrations of various metals such as elements such as Al, Ca, Cd, Co,Cr, Fe,K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb and Zn. The Atomic Absorption Spectrometry technique is used. The proper vegetable consumption can improve the mineral and trace metal regulation and reduce cardiovascular diseases and certain cancer risks.

Opis:
Diabetes is a major disease condition that is accountable for 5% of annual cause of death globally and it continues to escalate. In this research the levels of minerals in persons with type 2 diabetes were investigated using hair as the biopsy specimen. The philosophy behind is that minerals are involved in countless metabolic functions in all phases of the life process, an imbalance of which can have widespread implication, while hair due to its physiology serves an invaluable record of the body's exposure to minerals. Hair metal testing is a fascinating new diagnostic tool and often gives unexpected clues to mineral imbalances in the body. In executing the research samples of head hair collected from 6 type 2 diabetic patients were washed to remove exogenous contaminants, then subjected to open vessel acid digestion and subsequent analysis for the elements Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu Fe, K, Mg, Na and Zn using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FLAAS). After comparing the concentration of the elements to a range that is considered to be normal it was found that Ca, Zn, Fe, Mg, K, Cu, Cd and Cr were off range while Na was normal. Upon investigating the function and effects of the elements that were off range it was found that a deficiency of chromium and an excess of iron could be a possible cause of diabetes.

The research on the effectiveness of removing heavy metals from water solutions by bacteria was carried out at the laboratory of the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the University of Zielona Góra in 2007-2008. The research covered bacterial strains isolated from sludge, soil and water. The tests concerned the effect of 3 heavy metals: Pb (0,1%), Cu (0,1%) and Zn (0,1%). The results prove that due to the presence of heavy metals, the size of colonies was much lowered in comparison with the control pan. Some of the strains, reader doesnt know numbers in the 0,1% concentration of Cu and Zn in the culture scale. It turns out that this concentration was completely hazardous with respect to the growth of those bacterial strains. Considering all the heavy metals under analysis, it was found that Cu had the most hazardous effect on the growth of 4 bacterial strains, then Zn and Pb. Under the influence of 4 bacterial strains, the content of the metals that after 7-day long incubation remained is different depending on metal and bacterial strain. Removing Heavy Metals by bacteria from Water solutions heavy metals by bacteria from water solutions: Pb (34,38%), then Cu (29,69%) and Zn (21,88%). The content of the heavy metals removing by 4 strains was from 65,62% to 78,12%. The biggest amount removing was for Zn (78,12%) and the smallest for Zn (65,62%).

The present study was performed for the period of one year from June 2012 to May 2013 in order to understand the level of toxic heavy metals in the water of Mahim Creek near Mumbai. It was observed that the annual average concentration of heavy metals like Pb, Cd, Cr, Fe, Zn, Cu and Ni and Hg was found to be 0.68, 0.28, 0.15, 0.04, 2.93, 0.64, 1.29 and 0.31 ppm respectively. The average concentrations of Hg and Pb were found to be above the maximum permissible limit of 0.01 ppm and 0.1 ppm respectively set for inland surface water by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of India. The results suggest that there is a need to have such regular scientific monitoring for longer time period in order to understand the variation in level of these toxic heavy metals discharged in to the creek water. It is feared that the existing problem if ignored may increase the pollution problem of the creek due to the toxic heavy metals resulting in threat to the biological life of an aquatic ecosystem. From the results of the present investigation it seems that the time has come to move towards ecosystem specific discharge standards to maintain the health and productivity of natural resources on which the majority of human population is dependent.

Calotropis (Asclepiadaceae) commonly known as “madar” is a useful medicinal plant. The two species i.e. Calotropis gigantea and Calotropis procera are to a great extent having a very similar chemical properties, but the colours of their flowers are different. The pH of latex of these two species has been found different in the present study. The temperature effects have been noticed on their pH values which is varying from 7.2 to 8.1 between the temperatures 25 °C to 45 °C and then remains constant for Calotropis gigantia. The milky latex contains hydrocarbons, fatty acids, sterols and terpenels. Seven spots have been observed on the TLC plates; out of which 3 were identified as calotoxin, uscharin and calactin. Aluminum, calcium, cadmiun, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, magnese, magnesium, nickel, lead, and zinc metal elements were investigated in the latex and similarly in the leaves and bark from the AA spectra. The amount of magnese was found the highest in the latex of both species but calcium was found highest in leaves and bark of both species. Copper, chromium and lead were not found at all in latex but a very little amount of copper and lead were found in leaves and bark. The atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to investigate the metals which were measured in the order of ppm.
