Opis:
The location and most interesting geological features of the outcrop of the Menilite Beds in Kobielnik village were described in the text. However, the main subject is the problem of determining the structural position in the absence of typical indicators of the bed 's top and bottom. The proposed solution is based on the observation of clastic dykes and their structural relationship to the surrounding layers. In addition, some sedimentary structures and natural bitumen's seepages were described.

The study is focused on the taxonomic inventory of an intriguing bivalve fauna from the Lower Oligocene Menilite Beds (Dynów Marls) within the Silesian Nappe, Polish Outer Carpathians. Sixteen bivalve species have been identified within the material collected in two small quarries in Jabłonica Polska near Krosno. Stratigraphic and geographic distributions of all recognized species are considered. This assemblage, the first of this kind in Poland and one of three recognized in the Outer Carpathians, shows clear affinities to coeval typical Solenovian faunas from Ukraine to Kazakhstan, with particular comparison made to bivalve faunas from the Menilite Formation (Subchert Member) within the Boryslav-Pokuttya Nappe, Ukrainian Outer Carpathians. Moreover, this study presents an overview of the main aspects and definitions of the date of the Paratethys origin. The main criterion used to define the time of the Paratethys birth is the distinct faunal turnover from the moderately diverse boreal or Tethyan bivalve faunas populating particular basins of the Northern Peri-Tethys in the earliest Oligocene to the uniform, highly endemic fauna inhabiting the newly formed semi-closed basin. This vast inland sea, named Paratethys, was populated by representatives of eight euryhaline bivalve families. They are characterized by extinct Paratethyan genera, such as Bessia Kojumdgieva et Sapungieva, Merklinicardium Popov, Korobkoviella Merklin, Urbnisia Goncharova, Ergenica G. Popov and Janschinella Merklin.

Opis:
The sedimentary organic matter (SOM) assemblages and sedimentology of the Menilite Beds from the Dukla, Grybów and Vrancea units in the Slovakian and Romanian Outer Carpathians are described. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the SOM help ascertain depositional conditions, while the thermal maturity of the organic matter studied is estimated utilizing the Spore Colour Index and UV light excitation techniques. The sedimentary organic particles were grouped into ten SOM categories: marine palynomorphs (dinoflagellate cysts), sporomorphs (saccate and non-saccate, pollen and spores), freshwater algae (Botryococcus sp., and other freshwater microplankton), phytoclasts (cuticles, translucent wood, opaque wood), resin and amorphous organic matter (AOM). All samples are dominated by AOM. The presence of Botryococcus sp., Pediastrum sp., Pterospermella sp. and Campenia sp., in some samples points to deposition under hyposaline conditions. It is interpreted that the freshwater influx induced water column stratification in the basin, leading to the development of dysoxic to anoxic bottom-water conditions that enhanced the preservation of AOM. Kerogen analysis in UV light and evaluation using the Spore Colour Index demonstrated different thermal maturation patterns from the Slovakian (post-mature) and Romanian (immature) sections. Integrated palynofacies analysis (notably, the presence of freshwater algae) and sedimentological observations (e.g., hummocky cross-stratification) lead to the conclusion that the deposition of the Menilite Beds in the Vrancea Unit (Romania) was relatively proximal to the shoreline, above storm wave base, whereas the Slovakian units (Dukla and Grybów) were deposited in a more distal setting.

The Menilite Beds (Oligocene of Polish Flysch Carpathians) at Skrzydlna crops out in a structurally complex zone of the Fore-Magura Unit, which is tectonically overridden by Magura Nappe thrust form the S. The exposed sedimentary suite, representing the Dukla Basin, consists of fine-grained, well organised strata deposited in a low-energy, deep marine basin, which are abruptly overlain by poorly organised, coarse sandy conglomerate that forms a Mass Transport Deposit (MTD) complex. The MTD contains large boulders of extrabasinal rocks, massive sandstone beds with intrabasinal mudstone clasts, and slump sheets of sandstones. Above rests a fining- upwards sequence of sandstone beds interlayered with mudstones. The fine-grained facies reappear above to terminate the exposed succession. Erosional contacts and rapid facies changes, both vertical and lateral, are characteristic for the MTD unit. The sandstone-mudstone unit above contains laterally migrating erosional channels filled with massive sandy conglomerate in the lower part. Turbidites of varying density and completeness of internal structures that occur above are accompanied by an association of mixed facies including large-scale dune cross-bedding. Mineralogically, the sandstones are quartz arenites, sub-lithic arenites and wackes. Calcarenite grains – bioclasts, micrite and marl occur in substantial proportions only in the uppermost part of the succession. The point-counting data plotted on Qm-F-Lt diagram are clustered within the recycled fields: quartzose and transitional. Mineralogical maturity of the sandstones has the tendency to decrease from the sub-MTD strata upwards via the MTD unit to the lower part of the sandstone-mudstone complex; then it increases to the youngest sandstone beds with carbonate grains. These tendencies, associated with sedimentary features of the succession, reflect rapid uplift, emergence and progressive erosion of the terrigenous detritus source area, followed by tectonic stabilisation reflected by the appearance of the “carbonate factory”.

Opis:
Composition and thermal maturity of organic matter components from Menilite Beds (Skole Unit) were analyzed. Samples (26) were collected from 9 outcrops within the investigated area. Samples represented several lithologies – clay and marly shales, mudstones, sandstones/siltstones, micritic limestones and cherts. Macerals of three groups (vitrinite, inertinite and liptinite) are present in the analyzed samples. Macerals of the liptinite group are the most numerous. Within this group, bituminite is most common, while alginite and liptodetrinite are less often observed. Macerals of the vitrinite (collotelinite, telinite, vitrodetrinite) and inertinite (fusinite, semifusinite, inertodetrinite) groups are also present, but their content is significally lower compared to the macerals of the liptinite group. Organic matter within all the investigated area is clearly immature, which is confirmed by both vitrinite reflectance Ro and Tmax parameters. The composition of organic matter relates mostly to kerogen type II and III (and their mixture). Sev- eral relations between Rock-Eval parameters and maceral composition were identified. The obtained results were compared to data from Menilite Beds of the Silesian Unit.
W artykule przeanalizowano skład i dojrzałość materii organicznej obecnej w warstwch menilitowych jednostki skolskiej. Przebadano 26 próbek pochodzących z 9 odsłonięć. Próbki reprezentowały różne odmiany litologiczne – od łupków ilastych, przez ilastowęglanowe, mułowce, piaskowce/pyłowce, po utwory węglanowe i rogowce. W próbkach obserwuje się macerały wszystkich trzech grup tj. witrynitu, inertynitu i liptynitu. Macerały grupy liptynitu zdecydowanie dominują w składzie materii organicznej. Najczęściej jest tu spotykany bituminit, a rzadziej alginit i liptodetrynit. Udział macerałów grupy witrynitu (kolotelinit, telinit, witrodetrynit) oraz inertynitu (fuzynit, semifuzynit oraz inertodetrynit) jest wyraźnie niższy. Materia organiczna jest na całym badanym obszarze niedojrzała, na co wskazują pomiary refleksyjności witrynitu oraz parametr Tmax. Skład materii organicznej odpowiada głównie II oraz III typowi kerogenu, a także ich mieszaninie. Wykazano szereg zależności pomiędzy parametrami geochemicznymi (analiza Rock-Eval), a składem i dojrzałością materii organicznej określonej przy użyciu mikroskopu optycznego. Zbadano również podobieństwa i różnice pomiędzy materią organiczną łupków menilitowych w obrębie jednostki skolskiej i śląskiej.
