    Over the last decades there was a growing interest in religious materiality, miraculous images, votive practices, and how the faithful engaged with devotional art, as well as a renewed impetus to discuss the long-recognized association between sculpture and touch, after the predominance of the visuality approach. Additionally, the neglected phenomenon of clothing statues has also been increasingly explored. Based on the reading of Santuario Mariano (1707–1723), written by Friar Agostinho de Santa Maria (1642–1728), this paper will closely examine those topics. Besides producing a monumental catalogue of Marian shrines and pilgrimage sites, this source offers a unique insight into the religious experience and the reciprocal relationship between image and devotee in Early Modern Portugal, and is a particularly rich source when describing the believers’ pursuit of physical contact with sculptures. This yearning for proximity is partly explained by the belief in the healing power of Marian sculptures, which in turn seemed to be conveniently transferred to a myriad of objects. When contact with the images themselves was not possible, devotees sought out their clothes, crowns, rosary beads, metric relics, and so forth. Items of clothing such as mantles and veils were particularly used and so it seems obvious they were not mere adornments or donations, but also mediums and extensions of the sculptures’ presence and power. By focusing on the thaumaturgic role of the statues’ clothes and jewels, I will argue how the practice of dressing sculptures was due to much more than stylistic desires or processional needs and draw attention to the many ways believers engaged with religious art in Early Modern Portugal.

    W artykule zostały zaprezentowane wątki maryjne w katechezie parafialnej i przedsięwzięciach pastoralnych w polskich parafiach. Autorzy ukazali znaczenie parafii oraz rolę mariologii w przekazie katechetycznym. Została zwrócona uwaga zarówno na aspekt pobożnościowy, jak i formacyjny nauczania. W dalszej części przedstawiono wyniki sondażu dotyczącego form kultu maryjnego i uczestnictwa w nich dzieci oraz młodzieży, a także maryjny profil ich formacji w parafialnych grupach. Badania pokazały, iż parafialne wspólnoty skupiają tyko niewielki odsetek dzieci i młodzieży, natomiast większą frekwencją cieszą się formy pobożności i kultu maryjnego w parafiach. Analiza poszczególnych grup wykazała, że ważne jest odpowiednie przygotowanie animatorów i liderów poszczególnych wspólnot nie tylko o charakterze maryjnym.
    The article presents Marian motives in parish catechesis and pastoral projects in Poland. The importance of the parish and the role of mariology in catechesis were depicted at first. Attention was paid to both the piety aspect and the teaching about Mary. The paper discusses the results of the survey in 26 selected Polish Catholic parishes on the forms of Marian devotion and the participation of children and young people in Marian services (like the rosary, Rorate Mass, pilgrimages to Marian shrines) as well as the Marian profile of parish groups especially for children and young people. The research has shown that parish groups gather only a small percentage of children and young people, while various forms of Marian devotion in parishes enjoy a higher turnout. The analysis has also stressed the importance of a proper preparation of parish communities leaders as far as the Marian aspect of their activity is concerned.

    The paper addresses the problem of historical role and impact of John Paul II’s teachings on the dispute over Polish messianism which has been consistently present in the Polish literature and philosophy over the past two centuries. The article is an attempt to determine the pope’s actual contribution to the development of the idea of Polish messianism, and evaluate the ultimate significance of this contribution within a broad perspective of the evolution of Polish political thought during the latter part of the twentieth and early decades of the twenty first centuries. The starting point in the discussion is the contemporary historical-philosophical research in this field, and the final conclusions are oriented towards the philosophical qualification of the most recent attempts to revive the messianist ideology on the basis of papal thought.

    W katolicyzmie Maryja odrywa szczególną rolę pośród świętych – jest matką Jezusa, Syna Bożego. Jej wyjątkowość odbija się także w kulturze, która wyrasta z chrześcijaństwa. W kulturze tej jest ona prototypem kobiecości i macierzyństwa, łącząc w sobie nie tylko kult Maryi, ale także pozostałości przedchrześcijańskiego kultu pramatki. W pobożności ludowej, a zwłaszcza w jej wiejskiej wersji, postać Maryi ujawnia się w dwojaki sposób: jako Maryi z Nazaretu, znanej z kart Ewangelii, oraz jako przychodzącej z nieba Matki Bożej. W obu przypadkach Maryja jest tą, która przebywa z ludźmi, dzieląc ich troski życiowe. Wraz z urbanizacją, ten kulturowy model został przeniesiony do miasta, jak to ukazują w swoich powieściach Sylwia Chutnik i Salcia Hałas. Współczesny obraz kulturowy Maryi często wykracza poza teologiczną ortodoksję, co widać na przykład w „ewangelizacyjnych” działaniach Ady Karczmarczyk, a także wykorzystania wizerunku Maryi w sztuce, kulturze popularnej oraz w modzie. Opisane w artykule przykłady pokazują, że osoba Maryi odgrywa wciąż bardzo ważną rolę we współczesnej kulturze, choć funkcjonuje w niej często w sposób niezgodny z jej ewangelicznym i teologicznym obrazem.
    In Catholicism, Our Lady’s role among the saints is special, as she is the mother of Jesus, Son of God. Her uniqueness is reflected also in the culture stemming from Christianity. Here she constitutes the prototype of womanhood, maternity and mother-figure combining the cult of Our Lady and the relics of the pre-Christian cult of mother goddess. In popular piety, and especially in its rural version, the figure of Our Lady appeares in two ways: as Mary of Nazareth, known from the pages of the Gospel, and as the coming from heaven Mother of God. In both cases she is the one who lives with people, sharing their life concerns. Along with urbanization, this cultural model was transferred to the city, as it is shown in the novels of Sylwia Chutnik and Salcia Hałas. The contemporary cultural image of Mary often goes beyond theological orthodoxy, as it can be seen in Ada Karczmarczyk’s “evangelization” attempts, as well as in the use of Mary’s image in art, pop-culture and fashion. The examples presented in the paper indicate that Mary as a character still plays an important part in the contemporary culture, although the way she functions in it is often inconsistent with her image in the Gospel and theology.

    The complexity of Mariology is such that it can only be described by typology or by relationships. Pope Saint John Paul II develops both of these methodologies in dealing with the role of the Virgin Mary as Mother of the Church, a personal Mother to each human being and Mother of the Word Incarnate. This short paper looks at some of the writings and footnotes which are contained therein which show his love of certain Fathers of the Church such as Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort. In addition to the documents of the Second Vatican Council the Holy Father draws on these two great Saints and devotees of the Blessed Virgin in order to develop a Mariology and devotion suitable for the modern world. Francisco Suarez S.J who developed the systematic approach to Mariology is sidelined by Pope John Paul II in favour of Saint Louis de Montfort and with this approach he is able to bring the study of Mary to a new level where She will be known and loved.
    Złożoność mariologii jest tak wielka, że można ją opisać jedynie w kategoriach typologii lub relacji. Papież św. Jan Paweł II stosuje te dwie metodologie, analizując rolę Maryi Dziewicy jako Matki Kościoła, osobowej matki każdego człowieka, a także Matki Słowa Wcielonego. W tym krótkim opracowaniu autor analizuje niektóre pisma tam przywołane oraz przypisy, ukazujące jego podziw dla niektórych ojców Kościoła, np. św. Bernarda z Clairvaux i św. Ludwika Marii Griogniona de Montfort. Poza dokumentami Soboru Watykańskiego II, Papież odwołuje się do tych dwóch wielkich świętych i czcicieli Maryi Dziewicy, by stworzyć mariologię i pobożność odpowiednią dla współczesnego świata. Franciszek Suarez SJ, który wypracował systematyczne podejście do mariologii, ustępuje miejsca u Jana Pawła II św. Ludwikowi Grignionowi de Montfortowi. Dzięki temu Papież jest w stanie przenieść studia mariologiczne na wyższy poziom, gdzie Maryja Dziewica będzie znana i kochana.

    This article presents the cognitive error made by Helena P. Blavatsky concerning the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Blavatsky’s error consisted in ascribing the term “Immaculate Conception” to the content of one of the basic tenets of the Christian faith, which is the Incarnation of the Lord. An additional mistake in connection with this error was the observation that it was only in the middle of the 19th century that the Church elevated this truth to the rank of dogma. The confusion of the conception of the Mother with the Incarnation of the Son, and the association of the latter with the term “Immaculate Conception” gave rise to further difficulties, when the new verse of the Litany of Loretto pointed to Mary as “immaculately conceived.” The doubled cognitive problem that H. P. Blavatsky had to face because of this led her to announce further fantastic theories about the Immaculate Conception, which were not challenged by anyone for the next 150 years. Her grave cognitive error is now widespread and responsible for the functioning in contemporary Western culture of popular expressions such as the “Immaculate Conception of Christ,” where the “immaculateness” of the conception means the absence of sexual intercourse leading to the conception of a child. As a result of the widespread use of expressions of this type the authentic content of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary remains unknown to many people. In the article, this issue is presented based on the sources, which testify to the agency of H. P. Blavatsky as regards the spread of this cognitive error in the Western culture.
    W artykule przedstawiono błąd poznawczy Heleny P. Blavatsky, dotyczący treści dogmatu o Niepokalanym Poczęciu Maryi. Ten błąd polegał na skojarzeniu przez Helenę terminu “niepokalane poczęcie” z treścią jednej z głównych prawd wiary Kościoła, którą jest Wcielenie Pańskie. Dodatkową pomyłką w związku z tym błędem była obserwacja, iż dopiero w połowie XIX w. Kościół podniósł tę prawdę wiary do rangi dogmatu. Pomylenie poczęcia Matki z Wcieleniem Syna oraz skojarzenie tego ostatniego z terminem “niepokalane poczęcie” zrodziło kolejne trudności, gdy nowy werset Litanii Loretańskiej wskazał na Maryję jako “niepokalanie poczętą”. Zdwojony problem poznawczy, z którym w związku z tym musiała zmierzyć się H. P. Blavatsky, doprowadził ją do ogłoszenia dalszych, fantastycznych teorii na temat Niepokalanego Poczęcia, których jednak nikt nie wskazał jako błędnych przez następne 150 lat. Ten błąd poznawczy upowszechnił się głównie w świecie protestanckim i odpowiada za funkcjonowanie we współczesnej kulturze Zachodu pospolicie spotykanych wyrażeń typu “niepokalane poczęcie Chrystusa”, gdzie “niepokalaność” poczęcia oznacza brak stosunku płciowego, prowadzącego do poczęcia dziecka. W wyniku powszechnego używania tego typu wyrażeń autentyczna treść dogmatu o Niepokalanym Poczęciu NMP pozostaje dla wielu ludzi całkowicie nieznana. W artykule zagadnienie to zostało przedstawione od strony źródeł, które poświadczają sprawstwo H. P. Blavatsky, jeśli chodzi o rozpowszechnienie tego błędu poznawczego w kulturze Zachodu.

    Artykuł próbuje odpowiedzieć na pytanie o model katechezy maryjnej w naszych czasach. Współczesna katecheza maryjna powinna być – na wzór katechezy apostolskiej i patrystycznej – biblijna, chrystologiczna, eklezjalna i antropologiczna, czyli wierna Bogu i człowiekowi. Nie może być ckliwa i egzaltowana czy oparta tylko na emocjach i pobożności ludowej. Domaga się pogłębienia biblijnego i patrystycznego, czyli fachowej interpretacji i aktualizacji tekstów Starego i Nowego Testamentu, odwołujących się do osoby Matki Jezusa. Trzeba też sięgać do Ojców Kościoła i wielkich teologów maryjnych, którzy byli piewcami Matki Słowa. Nie wolno również zapomnieć o rozwoju tradycji maryjnej w kulturze i sztuce, czyli o inkulturacji maryjnej. Dobrym tego przykładem jest kult Matki Jezusa na ziemiach polskich, gdzie rycerstwo już w XV w. śpiewało pieśń maryjną Bogurodzica przed bitwą pod Grunwaldem. Nasza carmen patrium to pierwsza pogłębiona biblijnie i kulturowo katecheza maryjna.
    This paper attempts to answer the question about the model of Marian catechesis in our times. Modern-day Marian catechesis should be – following the way similar to the Apostolic and Patristic catechesis – Biblical, Christological, ecclesial and anthropological, i.e. faithful and loyal to God and the man. It can not be mawkish and exalted or based only on emotions and popular piety. It calls for the Biblical and Patristic deepening, i.e. for professional interpretation and revision of the texts of the Old and New Testament that refer to the person of Jesus’s Mother. We should also go to the Fathers of the Church and the great Marian theologians who were eulogists of the Mother of the Word, nor we must forget about the development of Marian tradition in art and culture, i.e. about Marian inculturation. A good example of this is the cult of Jesus’s Mother in the polish lands where knights, as early as in the 15th century, sang a Marian song Bogurodzica (Mother of God) before the Battle of Grunwald (First Battle of Tannenberg). Our Carmen Patrium is the first Biblically and culturally deepened Marian catechesis. Keywords
