Opis:
Magnetic resonance spectroscopy is a non-invasive method used to measure concentrations of selected metabolites in brain such as: N-acetylaspartate, creatine, choline, glutamic acid, myo-inositol, lactic acid or γ-aminobutyric acid. The MRS allows the researcher to obtain information about biochemical composition in selected localizations of the examined CNS and is based on the interpretation of spectra of specific chemical compounds. The aim of this study is a literature review of papers from last 5 years involving the use of MRS in multiple sclerosis. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy is a modern, promising metabolomic imaging method enabling the assessment of brain metabolite concentrations and the dynamism of their changes in healthy people and patients suffering from multiple sclerosis at every stage of the disease. MRS is helpful not only in correlating changes in metabolite concentrations at various central nervous system locations with clinical manifestations, but is also an increasingly improving tool for predicting disease progression. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy may also be useful in more specific clinical situations such as differential diagnosis between multiple sclerosis and Devic’s syndrome or between tumefactive demyelinating lesions and gliomas. Especially in the latter case, the development of this technology may in the future result in the possibility of avoiding invasive biopsy in patients during the diagnosis of focal changes in the CNS. One should also not forget about the role that MRS may play in the future in monitoring the course of treatment with modern MS drugs, not only in everyday clinical practice but also at the stage of clinical trials. The development of fast MRS techniques, significantly shortening the acquisition time and 7 T magnetic resonance spectroscopy, precise and repeatable method of quantitative analysis of brain metabolites may be particularly helpful in achieving these goals.

Novel chromophore GZP1 with D-π-A structure was designed and prepared for its application as a sensor for the recognition of Cu2+ ions in polluted water. Reaction of aldimine condensation was used to synthesize chromophore GZP1. Its chemical structure of was characterized by mass spectrum, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum. Cu2+ ions were recognized via fluorescence spectra. Chromophore GZP1 showed specific detection ability of Cu2+. 14 other metal ions were used as reference. The detection limit was estimated to be 0.06 μmol/dm3 in aqueous solution, which was significantly lower than the typical concentration of blood Cu2+ in normal individuals and the limit of copper(II) in drinking water.

Opis:
Phosphorous Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (31P MRS) is an interesting technique with a great potential in medical diagnostics. It is a perfect supplement to the examinations concerning information on the biochemical composition of the examined tissue, the level of metabolites containing phosphorus atoms, and indirectly, the metabolism of the tissue. Although the 31P MRS was historically the first known MR spectroscopy technique, it is currently not used as a diagnostic standard in spite of its numerous advantages. The purpose of this work is to present the 31P MRS method, particularly regarding its wide diagnostic capabilities.
Fosforowa spektroskopia rezonansu magnetycznego (31P MRS) jest interesującą techniką o dużych możliwościach w diagnostyce medycznej. Stanowi idealne uzupełnienie badań o informacje dotyczące składu biochemicznego badanej tkanki, poziomu metabolitów zawierających w swoim składzie atomy fosforu, a więc pośrednio o metabolizmie tkanki.

Opis:
The phenomena of neuroinvasiveness, latency and reactivation are characteristics of the Herpes simplex virus (HSV). The Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) prevalence rate is 1 up to 3 in a million cases, which is about 10-20% of all viral encephalitis cases. The course of the disease shows the prodromal period and the symptomatic one; the clinical course is usually rapid and may lead to sudden death. As for the symptomatic period, there are usually neurological focal symptoms and seizures as well as fluctuating consciousness leading to coma. The mortality rate in the course of HSE in non-treated individuals reaches up to 70%, it is lowered to 15% with early treatment with Acyclovir. However, most patients present persistent neurological and cognitive disorders. There are usually no changes in the CT scan as far as the early stage of the disease is concerned. Thus, the imaging technique of choice is MR scan, which shows the changes already on the second day after clinical symptoms. On the basis of MR scans, more or less symmetrical hyperintense cortical and subcortical white matter lesions occur on T2-weighted images with gyral and/or leptomeningeal contrast enhancement. MR spectroscopy can be helpful in lesion diagnosis and monitoring, while diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can be used to evaluate inflammatory process activity. Differentiation of HSE in imaging should consider limbic encephalitis, gliomatosis cerebri, cerebral ischemia, cerebral edema after seizure episodes, and MELAS syndrome (Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like episodes), among others. HSV identification in cerebrospinal fluid by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) method is a confirmation of the diagnosis.

Opis:
By characterizing organic molecules of extra-terrestrial origin included in the Sołtmany meteorite, we also present the first results of the non-targeted chemical analysis of the methanol soluble organic matter present in an L6 ordinary chondrite. The structural characterization by means of ultrahigh resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) with electrospray ionization (ESI) in negative and positive modes demonstrated an unexpected and astonishing chemical diversity with several thousand mass peaks that could be converted into C, H, N, O, S, and P elemental compositions. Molecular signatures were typically those of considerably oxygenated CHO and CHOS molecular series of primarily aliphatic character. 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy confirmed the prevalent existence of pure and functionalized aliphatic spin systems of intermediate chain length (C3-4 units), oxygenated aliphatics and a considerable diversity of oxygenated aromatics in the proton-based abundance ratio near 24 : 2 : 1. Although only residual organic matter allegedly survives in highly thermally altered L6 chondrites, the physical protection of organic matter in microcavities and traps between mineral surfaces might have supported and governed the chemistry with an apparent recalcitrance of extraterrestrial organic matter (EOM). Future studies of the organic matter in ordinary chondrites and its composition and structure in various regimes of (e.g.) temperature, radiation, pressure, and water content could shed light on these meteorites’ formation and evolution.

Opis:
The interface between optical spectroscopy, electron magnetic resonance (EMR), and magnetism of transition ions forms the intricate web of interrelated notions. Major notions are the physical Hamiltonians, which include the crystal field (CF) (or equivalently ligand field (LF)) Hamiltonians, and the effective spin Hamiltonians (SH), which include the zero-fi eld splitting (ZFS) Hamiltonians as well as to a certain extent also the notion of magnetic anisotropy (MA). Survey of recent literature has revealed that this interface, denoted CF (LF) ↔ SH (ZFS), has become dangerously entangled over the years. The same notion is referred to by three names that are not synonymous: CF (LF), SH (ZFS), and MA. In view of the strong need for systematization of nomenclature aimed at bringing order to the multitude of different Hamiltonians and the associated quantities, we have embarked on this systematization. In this article, we do an overview of our efforts aimed at providing a deeper understanding of the major intricacies occurring at the CF (LF) ↔ SH (ZFS) interface with the focus on the EMR-related problems for transition ions.
