Opis:
Cars have long been considered goods that symbolize status, yet few studies integrate the impact of symbolic and affective motives on the car buying decisions, with even fewer studies focusing on the infl uence of these motives on Eastern European consumers’ buying behaviour. The aim of this paper is to propose and test an integrative model, derived from the MOA model, which accounts for consumer motives (instrumental, symbolic and affective), constraints and abilities. The model is tested on a sample of Romanian consumers owning a driving licence. The data analysis was based on structural equation modelling. Findings indicate that symbolic and instrumental car use motives positively infl uence the intention to buy a car sooner, while affective motives have a negative infl uence, leading consumers to postpone the intention to buy a car. Results also show a signifi cant positive effect of self-effi cacy on intention implementation. Thus, the stimulation of symbolic motives may increase car buying intentions, while the presence of affective motives may lead consumers to still enjoy their current car. The paper contributes to expanding our understanding of consumer behaviour through an integrative model, which includes psychological motives, external factors and consumer abilities.

Numerous studies have explored what people do in their free time, but only a few of them have tried to explain why. In Study 1 we therefore aimed to obtain a detailed picture of the ways in which students spend their free time, but also we wanted to investigate their motivation for engaging in a specific activity that they consider to be their favourite. We found that the highest percentage of 585 students, who participated in Study 1, spend most of their free time on social interactions, reading and leisure with family. However, although they did not spend much time on physical activities, participants reported them as their favourite ones. An analysis of variance showed no differences in hedonic motives for free time activities, while eudaimonic motives did differ. In Study 2, we investigated intrinsic motivation for physical exercise on a new sample of 202 students, and found that recreational athletes have significantly higher intrinsic motivation compared to physically less active participants.

The aim of the study was to reveal age differences in motives and barriers of women attending fitness centers. 157 women aged 17-83 (M=43.86±15.40) participated in the study. All of them were members of fitness centers in the Silesia Metropolis in Poland. The most common reported motives for exercising were health and revitalization. Four motives changed when comparisons were made between age groups: affiliations, competition, health pressure and avoiding diseases. All these motives were stronger in older women. The main barriers to exercising were time constraints and physical limitations. The severity of time barrier significantly decreased with age and in older women it fell into the second place in the hierarchy, giving priority to physical barriers.

Introduction and objective. Currently, most women with less advanced breast cancer are offered operations with breast conserving treatment; however, if it is necessary to completely remove the breast, the patients may benefit from free breast reconstruction. The aim of the study was to determine the motives for breast reconstruction after mastectomy or decisive reasons for rejecting this treatment. Material and methods. The study included 241 women hospitalized in Polish oncological hospitals who were divided into two groups: 55.19% (n=133) were women after mastectomy; 44.81% (n=108) after breast reconstruction. Quantitative approach with the use of survey method was utilised. Results. Women who wished to undergo breast reconstruction were generallyy younger, better educated and more often professionally active. For women who wished to undergo breast reconstruction, the most important aspect was the willingness to improve their body image, their mental well-being, the inconvenience connected with wearing the prosthesis, better sexual relations with husband/partner, and the possibility of exposing the neckline without discomfort. The strongest correlation was found between women’s young age and their functioning in a relationship. Women after mastectomy, who decided not to undergo a breast reconstruction, were afraid of another operation, suffering, and they believed that there were more important issues. Conclusions. The study revealed a relationship between the lack of knowledge, in which hospital breast reconstruction procedure can be performed and the lack of motivation for undergoing the procedure. Women who have had knowledge of the possibility of a free breast reconstruction were younger, better educated and more often lived in the city.

The motivational component in the psychologist’s (special, clinical) professional training is analyzed. An analysis of the psychological and pedagogical literature led to the conclusion that the motive of self-determination, as a driving force of behavior, is determined not only from within but also under the influence of social conditions and requirements of society and specific life circumstances. The existence of various factors that can change individually and can affect motivation is outlined, so motivation can be considered as an aspect of psychologist’s (special, clinical) professional competence, which shows a set of internal and external influences that causes and indicates the boundaries and forms of activity that complements and directs to achievements.

Cyberbullying during English teaching involving Information Communication Technology (ICT) is an exciting topic to study. Seeing how new language learners share their thoughts and feelings through blogs as alternative learning media and how they engage in cyberbullying in their online interactions may reveal the motives beyond cyberbullying acts. This present study used the mixed method approach to understand the motives to tailor the anti-cyberbullying recommended solutions. The data is extended from a 3-month preliminary study to an 18-month investigation of 711 cyberbullying comments archived in 251 blogs owned and actively used by EFL university students at English Department of Universitas Lancang Kuning (Unilak). The analysis revealed the major students’ motive is just to have fun (70%), followed far behind by the motive to fight back (8%), to express upset feelings (7%), and other motives (12%). 16 students with the highest track record of cyberbullying in their blogging activities were interviewed to discuss their motives for cyberbullying other students whom they have known for at least more than 18 months. Results indicate cyberbullying among language learners seems to be an act of playing with language or linguistics wordplay. Cyberbullying seems to be a sort of language exaggeration for EFL students who possess limited competence in English when they interact in the online network. Based on the results, a new definition of cyberbullying was offered to accommodate the linguistic nature of cyberbullying. Using the primary health care framework by the World Health Organization (WHO), this present study designed a practical list of ready-made classroom activities to combat cyberbullying in four different steps, i.e. promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative.

Therefore, this study aimed to determine who and how uses the facilities and how their users perceive them. The sample comprised 1,036 exercisers aged 44.1±16.1 years. For over 85% of users, OGs are the facilities where they follow their planned exercise programme, with 56.2% declaring exercising solely there. The main perceived advantages of OGs are free-to-access (42.6%) and outdoor location (40.4%), while disadvantages are dependence on the season (57.2%) and the technical condition of devices (24.9%). The predominant motive for using OGs is to maintain and improve their health (38.6%) and stay fit (27.9%). OGs are an essential alternative to indoor gyms in situations of limited availability under pandemic conditions. For many people, they are even the only place to exercise.

The money is perceived as the common denominator among people who have spied against their own country. This assumption is common sense and appears to be self-evident truth. But do we have any hard evidences to prove the validity of such a statement? What method could be applied to determine it? This article is a review of the motives behind one’s resorting to spying activity which is a complex and multifarious process. I decided to present only the phenomenon of spying for another country. The studies on the motives behind taking up spying activity are idiographic in character. One of the basic methodological problems to be faced by the researchers of this problem is an inaccessibility of a control group.

The article looks at various approaches to mediation, leading to an indication of the nature and attributes of this method of solving armed conflicts. It also analyses the motives of the main actors of mediation - the parties’ of the conflict and the mediator, which are taken into consideration when they decide to start mediation. The research allows a better understanding of the complexity of mediation in an armed conflict. It enables the motives of the conflicting parties and mediator which have an impact on the mediation process and result to be identified.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to determine the physical activity levels of active duty police officers and police academy cadets in different life domains and intensities. These parameters were treated as potential quantifiers that could be used when assessing individuals preparing for work as future police officers. Material and Methods: The study recruited 153 active police officers and 176 cadets attending a police academy and administered a diagnostic survey, the long-form version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, while in the statistical analysis the Student's t-test for independent groups was applied. Results: It was determined that police officers present high physical activity levels within the work domain, which are developed from initial training at a police academy and then throughout their police career. Conclusions: Such data are important in the light of the role police officers play in public safety as well as the prominence of physical activity within a particular profession and how it can be targeted and tailored to their needs.

The decreasing number of students at the Polish education system, the expectations of the labor market and the needs of employers are forcing the higher education system to make changes in programs and models of teaching. Upon graduation, a student should be prepared to meet the increasing demands of the employment market, which expects graduates to have high professional and language competencies, related to, among others, modern technologies. The aim of the research conducted at the Faculty of Physical Culture and Health Promotion of the University of Szczecin was to ascertain the motives for the students’ choice of studies in the field of Tourism and Recreation in the context of their career plans. 49 first-cycle students and 39 second-cycle students aged between 20 and 25 were examined. In the study the diagnostic survey was employed, with the use of the techniques of questionnaire, observation and interviews. For the statistical inference frequency of characteristics, chi-square test of independence and multiple correspondence analysis were applied. It was found that the most important motives for studying Tourism and Recreation were interest in physical recreation, love of traveling, and desire to explore the world and disseminate a healthy lifestyle through active recreation. Students who chose the field of study consistent with their interests were planning to find jobs in a profession consistent with their education.

Background: Candidates for nursing studies should be aware of the specific nature, social expectations and vocation associated with their future occupation. Aim of the study: To examine the enrollment motives among candidates for nursing studies at the Medical University of Warsaw. Material and methods: This study was conducted in a group of 200 candidates for nursing studies as part of the recruitment process. The study data were collected using a proprietary questionnaire with motives for selecting nursing studies classified as autotelic, instrumental, or incidental. The results were statistically analyzed using PQStat software ver. 1.4.2.324. Results: The most common autotelic motive reported by the candidates was the desire to help others (98%). Analysis of instrumental motives revealed that 89.5% of respondents identified guaranteed employment as a motivating factor whilst 70% stated the course was a means to achieve stable employment. The ease of enrollment was a motive for selecting nursing studies by 24.5% of respondents. The older the age of the candidates, the greater the contribution incidental motives for selecting nursing studies. Higher instrumental motives scores were more frequent among urban residents. Autotelic motives were stated more frequently by candidates choosing nursing as their first field of studies. Conclusions: 1. Autotelic motives were predominant in the choices made by candidates for nursing studies. 2. The age of the candidates, urban vs. rural residential status and the choice of nursing as the first field of studies were factors that significantly differentiated the motives for selecting nursing studies. 3. As part of the curriculum, the university should ensure that newly enrolled students have adequate opportunities to expand their interests in the chosen profession and to satisfy their aspirations.
Wstęp: Kandydaci na studia medyczne powinni mieć świadomość specyfiki przyszłego zawodu, dużych oczekiwań społecznych i swoistej misji związanej z wykonywaniem zawodu.

The aim of the study is to to examine the motivations for participating in a half-marathon among two groups of runners, local running in their place of residence and sports tourists, and to evaluate the differences between them. With the increase in the popularity of ‘running tourism’ the question becomes important as it encourages runners to engage in physical activity outside their everyday place of residence. Freyer and Gross’s (2002) four types of motivation for participation in sports events was the basis for the development of the author’s questionnaire. The empirical research (sample size=346) then recognized these motives for participation. The article also presents a review of the literature on such motivations in mass running events. Results indicate that both group of respondents, residents of the place where the half-marathon was organised and sports tourists, have different forms of motivation. The greatest relevance for sports tourists turned out to be motivation for sensation-seeking but for local runners it was the result, and this confirms that sports tourists travel generally in search for strong emotions and sensations.

Opis:
The association between problematic internet use and school burnout among adolescents so far has not gained sufficient attention. Only a few studies have been conducted about social media overuse and burnout syndrome in an educational context. The main goals of the current study were (1) to examine the mediation role of Facebook (FB) motives on the relationship between academic burnout and FB intrusion, and (2) to test the validity of the cycle. A two-wave study was carried out (measurement at the beginning, Time 1, and at the end of the semester, Time 2) in a sample of 115 university students from Poland. The Maslach Burnout Inventory for Students, the Facebook Intrusion Scale, and the Facebook Motives and Importance Scale were used. The Time 1 burnout indicators did not significantly predict Time 2 FB intrusion, however Time 2 exhaustion and Time 2 Personal importance of FB explained 57% of the variances in Time 2 FB intrusion. Time 1 Personal importance explained 21% of the variances in Time 2 FB intrusion. The predictive capacity of academic burnout on FB intrusion appeared to exist only if we consider the motives and importance of FB. Moreover, the social motives and personal importance of FB appear to be critical to breaking the mutually reinforcing academic burnout–FB intrusion cycle.
