Opis:
This paper answers the question about the alternatives to the European Union membership (and its consequences) conceptualised by the inhabitants of Lower Silesia. To achieve this goal, this text delivers and discusses the empirical data, both quantitative and qualitative, answering the sub-questions if and how their lives have changed as a result of the accession to the EU as well as what are the alternatives, namely: How would our lives have looked like if Poland had not joined the EU in 2004? The article is empirical at its heart. It is built on some fresh data from an extensive research project conducted in 2014 – at the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the EU ‘big bang’ enlargement. At the same time it is the only study conducted in Poland which explores the question of citizens’ perceptions on the Europeanisation effects in such a complex and comprehensive way on the regional level. This study focuses on explaining the Lower Silesians’ opinions exclusively, which allows to see one of the most economically successful regions of Poland in the eyes of its inhabitants.

Nationalization and the introduction of state-controlled economy led to the emergence of abnormal social phenomena, including system-specific crimes. Economic transformations were the foundation of the systemic revolution carried out in the first decade after the Second World War, therefore they were the subject of interest for the Ministry of Public Security. That is why financial crimes were treated just like political crimes, which was also justified by legal provisions, as no specific definition of this type of crime existed. This allowed the authorities (secret police, prosecutor’s office, courts, media) to interpret the events according to their will and current political needs, and, as a result, to administer various overt or covert repressions (death penalty, imprisonment, forced cooperation with the secret police).

Opis:
New tergite fragments of Arthropleura were found at the Nowa Ruda mine (Lower Silesia, Poland), after more than seventy years since any previous discovery. The small dimensions of the preserved structures, in terms of the genus Arthropleura, and the characteristic features of tuberculation probably indicate that the remains do not belong to the type species A. armata, but they could represent a new species. The occurrence of round protrusions in the broken-off tubercles is another feature of the new specimens, which has not been mentioned in the earlier literature. Unfortunately, the scanty remains that we have at our disposal (only two specimens were found) are not sufficient for the proposal of a new species. The number of valid Arthropleura species requires further investigation, especially regarding the features, which are diagnostic for species. The tergites described have very numerous tubercles, which may have taxonomic value in species discrimination. Because the fossils were found on a dump, their exact stratigraphic position is not known. However, they occur together with index leaflets of the seed ferns Paripteris gigantea and Linopteris sp., which enabled the age determination of Upper Namurian - Lower Westphalian for the fossils studied. This new discovery of Arthropleura contributes to a better understanding of the genus and of the Carboniferous land fauna of Poland, which is otherwise poorly known. This is also the first, detailed description of Arthropleura remains from the Polish Carboniferous.

Detailed morphologic studies of detrital scheelite and gold grains from clastic Cenozoic sediments (alluvial and eluvial-colluvial) in two selected areas of the Lower Silesia region allowed to describe their specific features (size, roundness, lustre, and lack or remnants of primary intergrowths with other minerals). It allows estimating length of hydrodynamic transport and distance from the source area. Such features are also an important tool in determining the source of ore mineralization and to establish the parent area for detrital accumulations. Moreover, electron microprobe (EMPA) investigation of detrital gold allowed to recognized internal structure and chemical composition of placer gold grains. The grains commonly revealed zonal structures due to chemical supergene gold mobility recognized nearly in all studied pan-concentrate samples.

The objective of the present study is to identify rules governing the distribution and thematic structure of creative activities, using the region of Lower Silesia in southwestern Poland as an example. This empirical study is based on the data obtained from the Central Registration and Information on Business (CEIDG) as of 2018. Rural areas (compared to cities) generally display a lower level of economic activity. Analysis results confirm that craft-based activities are usually carried out outside large cities. A clear structure of specialisation among creative activities indicates that rural areas should mainly undertake activities that are consistent with the character of a particular local setting and are strongly connected with local conditions.

The basaltic rocks of Sośnica Hill near Targowica (Fore-Sudetic Block) belong to the Cenozoic Central European Volcanic Province. The volcanic succession at Sośnica is over 40 m thick and comprises pyroclastic fall deposits (mainly tuff breccias), subvolcanic intrusions (plug, dykes and other intrusive sheets) and aa-type lavas. Field relationships and structural data enable a detailed reconstruction of the vent location, morphology and eruptive history of the original volcano. Initial Hawaiian to Strombolian-type explosive eruptions produced a pyroclastic cone. Subsequently subvolcanic intrusions and lavas were emplaced. The lavas were fed from the central vent of the volcano, breached the cone and flowed southwards. Later eruptions resumed at a new vent on the western slopes of themain cone. The final volcanic edifice-a breached Strombolian scoria cone with a lava flow and a parasitic cone-was 500-1000 m in diameter at the base and 90-180mhigh. The preserved SWsector of this volcano, where the pyroclastic deposits were protected from erosion by the surrounding plugs and lavas, corresponds to ca. 1/2 of the height and 1/8 of the volume of the original volcano. Compared with many other remnants of Cenozoic volcanic centres in Lower Silesia, this volcano is exceptionally well preserved and exposed.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of structural and sedimentological studies carried out in the outcrops of Quaternary (Middle Pleistocene) deposits near the village of Czaple in Lower Silesia, Western Sudetes. Fluvial sands, gravels and glacial tills traditionally assigned to the Middle Polish Pleistocene Glaciations (Odranian Glaciation) crop out in the active gravel pit Czaple II. In these deposits, the authors have recognised and documented numerous mesoscale glaciotectonic deformation structures that were previously undescribed from the mountainous part of the Sudetes. These structures represent effects of sediment deformation in both proglacial and subglacial settings, and include such features as asymmetrical and disharmonic folds, thrusts, steeply inclined reverse faults, normal faults and conjugate sets of fractures. Based on the orientation of kinematic indicators associated with the faults and fracture planes (slickensides, hackles, grooves, R-shears) within the fine-grained sediments and in sands and gravels, an S- and SE-directed horizontal compression due to ice-sheet advance is postulated. This direction is consistent with some relevant other data from the Sudetes, indicating that the Odranian ice sheet advanced into the area of the Sudetes from the north, north-east and north-west.

Opis:
The oldest Cainozoic fluvial deposits in Lower Silesia date from the Oligocene. During the Middle and Late Miocene times, the fluvial system of this region was only slightly modified, especially in the foreland of the West and Middle Sudetes Mts. River lengths changed, following the migration of the North Sea shorelines. A rapid rebuilding of the fluvial system took place in the foreland of the East Sudetes Mts. either in the Late or Middle Miocene. Till that time, the main river valley of this region - the Nysa Kłodzka River, related to the Paczków and Kędzierzyn Grabens - used to flow towards the East, to a bay of the Paratethys sea. The new main river, pre-Odra, started to flow towards the North not before the Grodków Graben cut meridionally the Meta-Carpathian Swell. We are of the opinion that deposits of the Poznań Formation originated in an fluvial environment because no marine and/or limnic deposits have hitherto been discovered in the area of Lower Silesia above the uppermost of the Middle-Polish lignite seams (Henryk). The pre-Odra River drained the eastern part of Lower Silesia, and flowed towards the North, at least to the Poznań region. This main river captured such smaller rivers, as: the pre-Vistula, pre-Olza, pre-Ostravica, pre-Opava, pre-Nysa Kłodzka, and pre-Bystrzyca. Rivers draining the West Sudetes Mts. flowed first towards the North, to the region of the present-day Middle Odra River, and there turned to the West. It is conceivable that these rivers curved westwards just along the line of the present-day Wrocław - Magdeburg marginal stream valley ("Pradolina"). Since the Pliocene, the Sudetic rivers have started to transport coarser, sandy, and even gravelly material to a more distant foreland. Alluvial deposits of this phase occur exclusively on uplands. Coarse-grained sediments recognized in the bottom of deep erosional incisions were redeposited under subglacial conditions during the Mesopleistocene glaciations. The presented new interpretation of origin of the Poznań Formation basin and detailed recognition of Pliocene and Eopleistocene river system should initiate a new line of research into the Late Neogene and Eopleistocene sediments.

The main goal of this paper was to assess the intensity of heat stress in Lower Silesia, Poland, during selected weather events characterized by high air temperatures. The complex impact of weather on the thermal load of the human organism is presented using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). The analysis was carried out for the 2015 and 2018 summer seasons and compared with the multiannual period of 1971–2018. It was based on meteorological data from the IMGW-PIB stations of Wrocław, Jelenia Góra and Śnieżka. In order to examine how heat conditions affect UTCI in different geographical regions, stations located at different altitudes and representing the lowlands, the lower mountain zone and the summit zone of the Sudetes Mountains were considered. The research showed that during the most extreme thermal events, UTCI values in the lowlands and the lower mountain zones can be among the highest heat stress classes. In the summit zone, the maximum UTCI values are usually classed as ‘no thermal stress’.

The Silesian discovery predates that of the well-known orbicular diorite (Napoleonite) in outcrop on Corsica and, thus, may be the first ever record of this distinctive rock type in its geological context. The characterizing, closely-packed, simple orbs comprise K-feldspar cores surrounded by rims of radiating K-feldspar and quartz. Rapid growth from a hydrous, pegmatitic melt is indicated. The Karkonosze outcrop, in the timing of its discovery, is a unique part of the geological heritage.

The paper shows chemical alterations of the Rutki-Ligota basalt deposit of the Tertiary Volcanic Formation of Lower Silesia. The investigations indicate that the chemical alterations of basalts result from their textures and variations in mineral composition. The results of mineralogic studies of basalts suggest varied alteration processes: serpentinization, iddingsitization, uralitization and carbonatization. Some of products of these alterations (largely amphiboles and iron hydroxides) were identified using Mössbauer spectroscopy. The results of the studies indicate the usefulness of the Rutki-Ligota basalts not only in breakstone but also in mineral wool production.

This article presents the sixth and final contribution in a series of papers focused mainly on the K-Ar dating of the Oligocene and Neogene (Miocene and Pliocene) intraplate basaltic volcanics of the Lower Silesia, SW Poland. The present paper includes 22 new K-Ar dates from the West Sudety Mountains and their northern foreland. The K-Ar dates range from 30.7 to 22.2 Ma. The data are supplied with geological description of the sampled outcrops, petrographic, geochemical and palaeomagnetic data of the analysed samples. Palaeomagnetic investigation confirmed the existence of two important volcanic episodes distinguished already in 1997: the reversed polarity Odra Event (mean age 28.2š1.2 Ma), and the normal polarity Gracze Event (mean age 26.28š1.8 Ma).
