Opis:
The Internet of Things is changing the approach to data transmission, protocol design and network services. The challenge faced by designers of IoT solutions is to determine the scalability of a given technology, with a particular emphasis placed on unlicensed frequency bandwidth (ISM) transmission in highly urbanized areas. Because the design and implementation of a wireless network for the Internet of Things, relying on each of the presented technologies, is expensive and time consuming, it must be preceded by a performance assessment based on computer simulations. The literature contains various approaches to modeling the mechanisms of the MAC layer of LoRa technology and to its implementation in LoRaWAN networks. The article provides an overview of major LoRa MAC network simulators. It presents and comments on the most important research results obtained by the authors of the aforementioned software.

Opis:
Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology has established new concepts for long-range wireless communication, being widely used in the implementation of IoT solutions. Therefore, it is crucial to validate the coverage of the signal and to know the distance at which a LoRAWAN communication system can be connected. This document investigates LoRaWAN technology for cases based on urban environments, so it can be used as a guide for those projects that require predicting the connection distance range of a LoRaWAN link. In addition, it serves as a tool for the reader when it comes to predicting the coverage of Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology. Measurements were made in a LoRaWAN network deployed in urban environments, where RSSI measurements were made in the city of Bogotá D.C., Colombia. Experimentally RSSI values were compared with four different propagation models at a frequency of 915 MHz in urban environments. The contribution of this work is an adjustment to widely used prediction models, according to the recommendation of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) ITU-R P.1546, which allows estimating coverage in scenarios with characteristics similar to Bogotá D.C. This allows to know with precision the coverage before implementing the LoRaWAN communications system at 915 MHz. The results of comparing field measurements with fitted propagation models show that the Okumura model is the best predictor of coverage with a minimum error rate.

The LoRaWAN Technology opens new possibilities for gathering and analysis of distributed data. In the paper we concentrate on its maritime usability which was tested byus in the period from June to August 2018. Measurements of the LoRaWAN network coveragein the Bay of Gdansk area were carried out. Various conditions and places were tested. There search was planned in such a way as to gradually increase the range and control the impact of environmental factors. The results of the measurements confirm the wide application and a broad range of the technology. Combined with cloud computing it leads to new kinds of services and applications.

Opis:
Accurate and timely measures to preserve the native populations of the wild honey bees need a study on the influence of housing conditions and environmental factors on the quality, productivity and viability of bee colonies. The authors have developed a system for remote monitoring of microclimate parameters of wild bee colonies based on the latest LoRaWAN technology. For studying the monitoring system based on the selected data transmission technology, data collection and transmission devices are implemented in two variants – based on ready-made monoblock devices (Variant 1) and composite devices (Variant 2) based on the Atmega328P microcontroller and photovoltaic power supply system with digital temperature and humidity sensors. Field tests of an experimental remote monitoring system were carried out in actual working conditions without power supply and communication systems. The tests involved 15 monoblock ready-made RAK7204 devices (Variant 1) and nine composite devices (Variant 2) based on the Atmega328P microcontroller. After the tests, Variant 1 was excluded from further use in research due to mass failure. Variant 2 passed the tests and participated in further research. The parameters of the power supply system of measuring devices and gateways are analyzed. The results of year-round monitoring of microclimate parameters of bee colonies were obtained. The study results prove the efficiency of the monitoring system based on LoRaWAN technology with the Atmega328P microcontroller devices and its operation comfort. During the study, it was recorded that the outer air temperature dropped to -36 °C. During the same period, the internal temperature significantly exceeded the air temperature. Besides, the highest temperature in wild hives during the winter months reaches +15 °C and +35.5 °C in the summer months. The temperature difference recorded in winter between the air inside wild hives and outer air reaches Δ30 °С.

Opis:
This article provides a comparison of various wireless data transmission protocols, such as Wireless M-Bus, Lo- RaWAN, Sigfox, NB-IoT and a newly developed proprietary protocol, studying their performance in the application of batterypowered residential water meters. Key aspects of the comparison include energy consumption, which is analyzed through comparing unitary amount of charge required to conduct a single, bidirectional data transaction between the meter and base station, and maximum coupling loss which effectively defines the range and coverage in the system. For completeness, the study includes also a brief cost analysis and ends with a conclusion, stating when each of the particular standards should be favored.

Opis:
Pollution of the night sky by artificial light has now become an important element of the modern city landscape. The decline in the quality of the sky observed at night in urban areas has already been noticed even by residents unaware of its origin. A starry sky is nowadays not easy to observe even in places far from large conurbations or smaller cities. More and more places are losing access to the previously natural privilege of observing the dark sky, and their inhabitants are thus systematically exposed to all the direct and indirect negative effects of this phenomenon. Monitoring the brightness of the night sky is gaining interest from a growing number of interdisciplinary research groups being established around the world, including Poland. In Toruń, the first measurements of the magnitude of this phenomenon, together with the determination of its spatial scale, were started using handheld devices in 2017. In the following years, efforts were made to improve the data acquisition process by creating a prototype – a technology demonstrator and, consequently, a commercial version of an automatic device measuring the surface brightness of the night sky. This paper presents the stages of the project aimed at developing a light pollution monitoring system, which has been consistently implemented in Toruń. The most important component of this system is a measuring device of our own design and construction. The monitoring system designed and operating in Toruń, starting in 2019, is being further developed with new components and monitoring (measurement) sites being systematically added, making the city’s observation network increasingly dense. The devices built using the LoRa standard for wireless data exchange implement the concept of the Internet of Things, fitting in with the objectives of a smart city.

Opis:
Internet of Things devices that send small amounts of data do not need high bit rates as it is the range that is more crucial for them. The use of popular, unlicensed 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands is fairly legally enforced (transmission power above power limits cannot be increased). In addition, waves of this length are very difficult to propagate under field conditions ( e.g. in urban areas). The market response to these needs are the LPWAN (Low Power WAN) type networks, whose main features are far-reaching wireless coverage and low power measurement end-nodes that can be battery powered for months. One of the promising LPWAN technologies is the LoRa WAN, which uses a publicly available 868 MHz band (in Europe) and has a range of up to 20 km. This article presents how the LoRa WAN network works and describes the installation of the research and measurement infrastructure in this technology which was built in the Gdańsk area using the Academic Computer Center TASK network infrastructure. The methodology and results of the qualitative and performance studies of the constructed network with the use of unmanned aircraft equipped with measuring devices for remote collection of environmental data are also presented. The LoRaWAN TASK has been designed to support the development of other research projects as an access infrastructure for a variety of devices. Registered users can attach their own devices that send specific metrics that are then collected in a cloud-based database, analyzed and visualized.
