Opis:
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a sensing technology whieh has application in building the Digital Terrain Model (DTM). A point cloud generated from laser scanning makes up the so-called large dataset, which is difficult and sometimes even impossible to use directly. Import of LiDAR point cloud into appropriate software and its processing is time-consuming and demands high computing power. Therefore, it is advisable to optimize the volume of observation results which make up the point cloud. The following paper presents operation of a modified algorithm for optimization of points' number in a large dataset [Błaszczak W., 2006]. The optimization involves reduction and uses existing cartographic generalization methods. The optimized dataset was filtered, and during the process the points representing the terrain were separated from data representing non-ground elements. Filtration was carried out with the application of a proposed new method including trend line in search belts, and the laser power used to register points. The optimized and filtered data set was then used to build a DTM. The results obtained encourage further detailed study of theoretical and empirical character.

Opis:
Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology has changed conventional approach to the spatial data acquisition. Unusually amount of the measurements points with extremely high precision are now available from generally two platforms: airborne (Airborne Laser Scanner - ALS) and terrestrial (Terrestrial Laser Scanner - TLS). There are however some gaps in these products, in ALS - on vertical surfaces and in TLS - on horizontal one. The reason is that these laser systems register the same object from different points in space. Integration of the data obtained for airborne and terrestrial platforms can fulfil the gaps. The aim of the research presented in the paper was comparing the matched ALS and TLS data to the in-situ total station (TS) measurements. Different test areas were chosen: placed on horizontal, vertical or inclined surfaces and covered by grass or asphalt pavement. Point’s positions obtained from ALS, TLS and TS measurements are analysed together. TS measurements are taken as a reference. ALS and TLS point position accuracy analysis based on these perpendicular distance from the plane defined by the nearest three non-collinear TS points. The discrepancies were further statistically analysed. In conclusion can be stated that some bias was observed in ALS data, they are below TLS and TS points as well. Besides more significant discrepancy between TS points are observed for ALS points in compare to the TLS one, confirming our expectations.

Opis:
Calculating the volume for various types of surfaces and materials is important for many branches of engineering sciences. Correct volume calculation often has a significant impact on the cost and time of a given project. These type of calculations are already applied at the design level. Measurement of cubature is crucial, for example, in construction and mining. The paper presents an analysis of and calculation results for measuring the volume of soil masses using different measurement techniques, which include: LIDAR (in this case of terrestrial and airborne laser scanning), photos taken with the use of UAV and measurements in the GNSS method. The object of the study was an earth mound located in the Park Dębnicki in Kraków. Relative volume error has been calculated in relation to the terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) method. For each of the tested methods, the error remained within the limits allowed by the standards and amounted to 0.2% for airborne laser scanning (ALS), 2.3% for photos obtained from UAVs and 3.4% for the GNNS-RTK method. The results of tests are presented in graphic and tabular forms. The obtained results were compared and the most advantageous measurement techniques to be used in determining the cubic capacity of this particular research object was indicated.

The TerraSAR-X add-on for Digital Elevation Measurement (TanDEM-X) mission launched in 2010 is another programme – after the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) in 2000 – that uses space-borne radar interferometry to build a global digital surface model. This article presents the accuracy assessment of the TanDEM-X intermediate Digital Elevation Model (IDEM) provided by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) under the project “Accuracy assessment of a Digital Elevation Model based on TanDEM-X data” for the southwestern territory of Poland. The study area included: open terrain, urban terrain and forested terrain. Based on a set of 17,498 reference points acquired by airborne laser scanning, the mean errors of average heights and standard deviations were calculated for areas with a terrain slope below 2 degrees, between 2 and 6 degrees and above 6 degrees. The absolute accuracy of the IDEM data for the analysed area, expressed as a root mean square error (Total RMSE), was 0.77 m.

Opis:
In April 2013, the Laboratory of Geomatics launched the project under the acronym “Bartek 3D” in cooperation with the Research Section of Students from the AGH in Krakow, Pedagogical University and the Jagiellonian University as well. The main aim of the project is to monitor the biggest and probably one of the oldest trees in Poland - Oak Bartek in Zagnańsk (N 50o59’14”; E 20o38’59”), based on multi-temporal Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) technology. One of the results of the project should be a 3D model of Oak Bartek and detection of the changes in the shape of the tree. Terrestrial Laser Scanning and the traditional forest inventory measurements were performed during the Leaf-OFF season in April 2013 and April 2014 and repeated in Leaf-ON period in July 2013 and October 2014 with using scanners: FARO FOCUS 3D, RIEGL VZ-400, LEICA C10 and RevScan (HandyScan). The results based on TLS technology showed some differences comparing to existing data obtained by traditional measurements for forestry inventory: • Height (H) of the tree: altimeter Vertex (Haglöf) H = 29.31 m; HTLS = 28.49 m; • Trunk circumference (L) measured with stretched tape: LST = 9.80 m; adjacent along the shape of bark: LT = 13.70 m; TLS measurments: LTLS1/4 = 9.97 m oraz LRevScan = 13.54 m • The average diameter at breast height (DBH130cm) calculated on the basis of 3D basal area of stem DBHTLS1/4 = 3.03 m (DBHT = 3.12 m).
Skanowanie wykonano w okresie bezlistnym (kwiecień 2013 i 2014) i powtórzono w ulistnionym (lipiec 2013, październik 2014). Pierwsze wyniki pomiarów Dębu Bartek technologią TLS wykazały pewne różnice w stosunku do istniejących danych pozyskanych metodami tradycyjnymi: • wysokość drzewa - wysokościomierz Haglöf Vertex: H = 29.31 m; analiza chmury punktów: HTLS = 28.49 m; • obwód pnia pomierzony naciągniętą taśmą mierniczą: LST = 9.80 m; przylegającą wzdłuż załamań i szczelin kory: LT = 13.70 m; wyznaczony z pomiarów TLS: LTLS1/4 = 9.97 m oraz LRevScan = 13.54 m; • średnia pierśnica (DBH130cm drzewa obliczona na podstawie pola przekroju DBHTLS1/4 = 3.03 m (DBHT = 3.12 m).

Opis:
The use of new technology, which is airborne laser scanning (LiDAR), allows to analyze changes in the natural environment. Due to its accuracy and precision, this method makes possible to study even small landforms. It is an excellent complement to traditional surveying methods. The analysis deals with Dębina Cliff – the several-kilometers long form located at the coast of the Ustka Gulf. The cliff was developed using LiDAR images and generated DEMs (Digital Elevation Models). Orthophotomaps and topographic maps in scale 1:10 000 proved to be helpful as well. The usefulness of LiDAR images and products for studying small landforms was presented. On their basis, the exact morphometric characteristics of Dębina Cliff was determined. By comparing images taken at different seasons, it was also possible to determine the changes that have occurred during the survey. Calculations and measurements have been developed with a help of GIS software: ArcGIS, QuantumGIS and Global Mapper.
Badania z wykorzystaniem lotniczego skaningu laserowego (ALS – Airborne Laser Scanning, LiDAR – Light Detection and Ranging) są coraz częściej wykorzystywane do analiz środowiska przyrodniczego (Dudzińska-Nowak 2007, Wężyk 2008). Rozwój technologii geoinformatycznych sprawił, że metody lidarowe doskonale uzupełniają metody tradycyjne (geodezyjne i fotogrametryczne), a nawet stanowią dla nich mocną konkurencję. Dzieje się to dzięki wysokiej dokładności i wydajności opracowań. Wynikiem skanowania są tzw. chmury punktów, dzięki którym można wygenerować pomocnicze produkty: Numeryczny Model Terenu (NMT) i Numeryczny Model Powierzchni Terenu (NMPT).

Full Waveform LiDAR data have been available for many years, yet applications just recently started discovering its potential in airborne topographic surveying. Forestry and earth sciences applications have been traditionally using waveform processing for many years, but topographic mapping has just started exploring the benefits of waveform. The potential advantages are improved point cloud generation, better object surface characterization, and support for object classification. However, there are several implementations and performance issues, such as the availability of waveform processing tools and waveform compression methods that should be addressed before applications can take full advantage of the availability of waveform data. The paper provides an overview of the waveform application potential in both airborne and mobile LiDAR mapping applications.

Opis:
Recent years the cataclysm of flood has occurred in many regions around the world. For this reason, so much attention is focused on prediction of this cataclysm by creating flood risk maps and hydrodynamic – numerical simulation of flood water which are based on Digital Terrain Model (DTM). The modern techniques for automatic data acquisition provide very abundant amount of points. Actually, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is the most effective data source for DTM creation with density of one to few points per square meter and good height accuracy of less than 15 cm. This high redundancy of data is essential problem for algorithms used in programs for flood modeling. Many software generating such models are restricted with respect to the maximum number of points in DTM. Hundreds of thousands of points are too large number for complex calculations which describe fluid model of the flood water. In order to obtain reliable and accurate results, it is necessary to have DTM with an appropriate accuracy. The flood disaster also occurs in large areas what usually is associated with large data sets. However, it is possible to provide suitable DTM for flood modeling by its generalization without losing its accuracy, which could still ensure sufficient precision for hydrodynamic – numerical calculations. In this paper six reduction algorithms were tested to obtain DTM with small number of points and with accuracy comparable to the original model created from LiDAR data. The main criteria for this comparison was the relation between accuracy and reduction coefficient of final result. Methods used in this research were based on different DTM structures. GRID, TIN and hierarchical structures were compared in various approaches to obtain the most reduced and the most accurate terrain model of two study areas. As the result of the experiment the best methods for data reduction were chosen. Over 90% reduction rate and less than 20 cm root mean standard error were achieved in practice for different types of terrain with respect to input DTM. It was noted that hybrid and quad-tree grid based models can be even more efficient than a typical uniform GRID or TIN one.

Rich geometric models of the environment are needed for robots to carry out their missions. However a robot operating in a large environment would require a compact representation. In this article, we present a method that relies on the idea that a plane appears as a line segment in a 2D scan, and that by tracking those lines frame after frame, it is possible to estimate the parameters of that plane. The method is divided in three steps: fitting line segments on the points of the 2D scan, tracking those line segments in consecutive scan and estimating the parameters with a graph based SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping) algorithm.

Small midfield ponds have important functions in the hydrology and ecology of hummocky areas of Poland. Because of their sensitivity to meteorological conditions, their number and hydroperiod are altered as a result of climate changes and agriculture pressure. Accurate estimation of the pond area and storage capacities requires up-to-date high-resolution elevation data. In this paper, we developed 0.2 m and 1.0 m bare-earth DEMs from LiDAR data and compared them with DEMs obtained from old bathymetric maps. Then, we calculated A-h and V-h relations and compared them with the relations derived from simplified models describing the pond shape. The analyses showed that LiDAR data are also useful for detecting changes in the ponds morphometry.

Opis:
In this paper, a texture approach is presented for building and vegetation extraction from LIDAR and aerial images. The texture is very important attribute in many image analysis or computer vision applications. The procedures developed for texture problem can be subdivided into four categories: structural approach, statistical approach, model based approach and filter based approach. In this paper, different definitions of texture are described, but complete emphasis is given on filter based methods. Examples of filtering methods are Fourier transform, Gabor and wavelet transforms. Here, Gabor filter is studied and its implementation for texture analysis is explored. This approach is inspired by a multi-channel filtering theory for processing visual information in the human visual system. This theory holds that visual system decomposes the image into a number of filtered images of a specified frequency, amplitude and orientation. The main objective of the article is to use Gabor filters for automatic urban object and tree detection. The first step is a definition of Gabor filter parameters: frequency, standard deviation and orientation. By varying these parameters, a filter bank is obtained that covers the frequency domain almost completely. These filters are used to aerial images and LIDAR data. The filtered images that possess a significant information about analyzed objects are selected, and the rest are discarded. Then, an energy measure is defined on the filtered images in order to compute different texture features. The Gabor features are used to image segmentation using thresholding. The tests were performed using set of images containing very different landscapes: urban area and vegetation of varying configurations, sizes and shapes of objects. The performed studies revealed that textural algorithms have the ability to detect buildings and trees. This article is the attempt to use texture methods also to LIDAR data, resampling into regular grid cells. The obtained preliminary results are interesting.

Opis:
In this paper, we present a re-normalization method for a Doppler signal of a Doppler lidar system. For the Doppler lidar system, we used an injection-seeded pulsed Nd:YAG laser as a transmitter and an iodine cell as a Doppler frequency discriminator. A frequency locking system that uses the absorption feature of iodine gas is too sensitive to the external or internal noises (iodine cell temperature instability, laser frequency fluctuation, environmental noises, etc.) to maintain its locking point ideally, and this frequency locking error makes the Doppler lidar system acquire the noises as the Doppler frequency shifts. To reduce the Doppler signal error induced by a frequency locking error, we used a re-normalization method by an addition of a laser beam path separated from a transmitter to the Doppler frequency discriminator for re-normalization. In this method, fluctuations of the Doppler signal were reduced using the reference signal. The reduced amount of standard deviation between the Doppler signal and the re-normalization signal was 4.838×10–3 and the Doppler signals showed a 53.3% fluctuation reduction of the averaged error value by this method.

Opis:
Accurate, detailed, and up-to-date 3D building models are important for several applications such as telecommunication network planning, urban planning, and military simulation. Existing building reconstruction approaches can be classified according to the data sources they use (i.e., single versus multi-sensor approaches), the processing strategy (i.e., data-driven, model-driven, or hybrid), or the amount of user interaction (i.e., manual, semiautomatic, or fully automated). While it is obvious that 3D building models are important components for many applications, they still lack the economical and automatic techniques for their generation while taking advantage of the available multi-sensory data and combining processing strategies. In this research, an automatic methodology for building modelling by integrating multiple images and LiDAR data is proposed. The objective of this research work is to establish a framework for automatic building generation by integrating datadriven and model-driven approaches while combining the advantages of image and LiDAR datasets
