Opis:
Thermal fracture characteristics - the thermal energy release rate and thermal stress intensity factor of a semi-infinite crack at an interface between the two elastic isotropic materials, subjected to the temperature variations, are considered in this paper. Those characteristics are determined based on application of the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) concept. Expressions for obtained theoretical solutions are compared to solutions from literature and they are found to be more concise. Influence of the materials change on these two thermal fracture properties were observed, as well as the influence of the thickness ratio of the two layers constituting the interface.

Opis:
In this work, fracture mechanics methodology is used to predict crack propagation in the adhesive joining of aluminum and composite plates. Three types of loadings and two types of glass-epoxy composite sequences: [0/90]2s and [0/45/-45/90]s are considered for the composite plate. Therefore 2 × 3 = 6 cases are considered and their results are compared. The debonding initiation load, complete debonding load, crack face profile and load-displacement diagram have been compared for the six cases.

Opis:
In this paper the buckling delamination of a coating on a flat substrate in form of a straightsided blister with special attention paid to the influence of elastic characteristics of the substrate is considered. Conditions for the buckling initiation are analyzed as well as the energy release rate and mode mixity of the interface crack as functions of the difference in elastic characteristics of the coating and the substrate. The problem is discussed from the aspect of application of the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) concept for the interfacial crack. The real angle function ! of the Dundurs parameters and and the ratio of thicknesses of the two layers are used for determination of the energy release rate and the load phase angle. Both the energy release rate along the sides of the blister and the average energy release rate at the front of the blister were calculated. The results thus obtained justify the application of the LEFM concept for interfacial cracks to the considered problem.

Opis:
Fatigue failure avoidance is a goal that can be achieved only if the fatigue design is an integral part of the original design program. The purpose of fatigue design is to ensure that the structure has adequate fatigue life. Calculated fatigue life can form the basis for meaningful and efficient inspection programs during fabrication and throughout the life of the ship. The main objective of this paper is to develop an add-on program for the analysis of fatigue crack growth in ship structural details. The developed program will be an add-on script in a pre-existing package. A crack propagation in a tanker side connection is analyzed by using the developed program based on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and finite element method (FEM). The basic idea of the developed application is that a finite element model of this side connection will be first analyzed by using ABAQUS and from the results of this analysis the location of the highest stresses will be revealed. At this location, an initial crack will be introduced to the finite element model and from the results of the new crack model the direction of the crack propagation and the values of the stress intensity factors, will be known. By using the calculated direction of propagation a new segment will be added to the crack and then the model is analyzed again. The last step will be repeated until the calculated stress intensity factors reach the critical value.

Opis:
In the tube joints the crack growth usually appears along the weld’s edge, i.e. at the spot where the chord and the brace are connected. The semi-elliptical crack the most frequently develops from the initial flaw that originated during the welding. The abrupt change in the material’s structure and response to loading are increasing the normal stresses in the lateral tube at certain spots around the crossing of the main and lateral tubes, producing the “hot spot” stress. Sensitivity to fatigue depends on combination of the cyclic loading, initial defects, environmental influences and the “hot spot” stresses which are the result of the tube walls bending during the loading of the structure. The principles of the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) are applied in this paper to analysis of the crack propagation behavior of a thin tube joints. Influence of various parameters was investigated individually and independently, and the share of the fatigue crack growth and subsequently the working life of the welded joint were estimated.
