Opis:
Aim. This paper analyses the inherent paradoxes of Jewish-Polish relations. It portrays the main beliefs that construct the contradicting narratives of the Holocaust, trying to weigh which of them is closer to the historic truth. It seeks for an answer to the question whether the Polish people were brothers-in-fate, victimized like the Jews by the Nazis, or if they were rather a hostile ethnic group. Concept. First, the notion of Poland as a haven for Jews throughout history is conveyed. This historical review shows that the Polish people as a nation have always been most tolerant towards the Jews and that anti-Semitism has existed only on the margins of society. Next, the opposite account is brought, relying on literature that shows that one thousand years of Jewish residence in Poland were also a thousand years of constant friction, with continuous hatred towards the Jews. Consequently, different accounts of World War II are presented – one shows how the Polish people were the victims, and the others deal with Poles as by-standers and as perpetrators. Results and conclusion. Inconsistency remains the strongest consistency of the relations between Jews and Poles. With the unresolved puzzle of whether the Polish people were victims, bystanders or perpetrators, this paper concludes with some comments on Israeli domestic political and educational attitudes towards Poland, that eventually influence collective concepts. Cognitive value. The fact that the issue of the Israeli-Polish relationship has not been deeply inquired, seems to attest to the reluctance of both sides to deal with what seems to form an open wound. At the same time, the revival of Jewish culture in Poland shows that, today more than ever, the Polish people are reaching out to Israelis, and are willing to deal with history at an unprecedented level. As Israelis who wish to promote universal values, a significant encounter with the Polish people may constitute a door to acceptance and understanding of others. Such acceptance can only stem from mutual discourse and physical proximity between the two peoples.

I just want to make an introductory note: I - like Marcin Kula in his book on the 'Stubborn question. Jewish? Polish? Humane?' - am very well aware of the fact that the definitions 'Jew' and 'Christian' are not satisfactory. But as Gebirtig was a Pole and at the same time a traditionally raised and educated religious Jew, I decided to use this terminology in this article, which deals with Polish-Jewish relations before the Second World War and includes the relations with the Germans after the invasion of Poland in September 1939. As far as I can see, the topic of the relations between Jews and Christians has now shifted into the centre of academic interest in Poland, judging by the significant number of books and articles published on the subject. These relations, having, as I mentioned, also included the Germans, thus created a triangle full of tensions which are also a topic of research and discussion within the Polish literature of the last twenty years.

The period between the 1905 Revolution and the outbreak of World War I was the time of deepening controversies between the interests of the Great Powers, the formation of the political and military alliances, and the preparations for a military conflict. In the Kingdom of Poland, the territory of which – as many expected – was to become one of the main battlegrounds in the upcoming war, the growing tension in the international relations was clearly felt. This tension influenced the internal situation, in which such events as the elections to the State Duma (the Russian Parliament), the issue of self-government or the emergence of the new Chełm gubernya (Province) electrified the population. The presence of a fairly large number of Jews, and the Jewish issue raised by some political forces were the other factors shaping up the social and political relations in the Kingdom; the factors, which - a few years before the war - gained the unprecedented momentum. Although the worsening of the Polish-Jewish relations could have been observed earlier, the elections to the State Duma in 1912, in which – due to the Jewish votes – the candidate of the National Democracy (the so-called endeks), Roman Dmowski lost his battle for a seat in the Parliament, became a turning point in the history of the Polish Jews.

In this paper, I wish to present the complexity of Jewish-Polish relations from the 19th century until the interwar period, with emphasis on sociolinguistic issues. I will illustrate the circumstances of the contact between the Polish and Hebrew languages. Poles and Jews, who lived side by side, developed successful relationships, but mainly in the criminal underworld. That was reflected in a sociolect – a dialect of criminals that constituted a mixture of Polish, Yiddish, Russian, and several other languages, including quite a few Hebrew words, which with time adopted new meanings. Moreover, I will provide some examples of Hebrew words used in Polish criminal jargon, as well as those which have been coined in every-day Polish. Then I will refer to some Hebrew words that are not connected with a world of crime and are still in use in spoken Polish.

At the height of the Polish-Soviet War in August 1920, the Polish army interned thousands of its Jewish soldiers at Jabłonna near Warsaw. Although the internees were released after several weeks, the events gave rise to numerous domestic and foreign policy debates and shaped Polish-Jewish relations in the years to come. ‘Jabłonna’ stands pars pro toto for the problems of the Polish state and Polish society in dealing with a heterogeneous population at the beginning of the interwar period. In recent decades, the events surrounding the internment have been taken up and contextualised sporadically by historians and publicists, but usually without them having made recourse to the available archival sources.

The paper aims to analyse how the staging of Shakespeare’s texts in post-war and contemporary Poland reflected the indifferent and hostile attitudes of Poles towards Jews, particularly during the Holocaust, and the distortions and gaps in the collective memory regarding the events. In the first part, the author focuses on Hamlet Study (dir. Jerzy Grotowski) performed in 1964 by Laboratory Theatre of 13 Rows in Opole, which is symptomatic of silencing the matter during the communist period. The second part draws from the statement of Jan Ciechowicz, a Polish theatre historian, who claimed that “the Holocaust killed Shylock for Polish stage.” While verifying it, the author analyses selected aspects of three productions directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski (The Tempest (2003), The Merchant of Venice (1994) and The African Tales by Shakespeare (2011)) and juxtaposes them against the background of the changes in collective memory. He argues that the most cogent productions concerning Polish attitudes towards Jews are those that position the audience as witnesses of the acts of re-enacted violence and thus provoke an affective response.

The last year of the Great War brought the enhancement of the activities of the political parties, both the Polish and the Jewish ones, as well as deterioration of Polish-Jewish rela-tions. The attitudes reluctant to cooperate with the Poles took hold among the Jews or rather a belief that there were no actual chances for the agreeable fixing of its principles. Another reason for the mutual grievances became forcing the national and cultural autonomy by some of the Jewish parties and the attempts to search for the adherents of such demands in the West. The events in Lvov (Lviv, Lemberg) and the growing Polish-Ukrainian conflict in the Eastern Galicia became yet another inflammatory point in the Polish-Jewish relations. The rumours, which reached the Kingdom of Poland saying that the Jews sympathised with the Ukrainians in Galicia and ‘shoot the Polish soldiers at the back’ added to the traditional accusations addressed at Jews (cooperation with the Germans and Austrians, sympathising with the communists), one more element, the consequences of which are hard to ignore. At the same time, the anti-Semitic propaganda has collected all the oppositional declarations of the Jews and their critical remarks about the Polish rules and then, distorting them consciously, presented the Jewish population as an element hostile to the Polish state, which in general was not true. In autumn 1918, the Jewish population greeted the liberation of the Polish lands with fear. Those were not groundless fears: one could notice, as early as in spring that year that the hostility towards the Jews undertook the increasingly severe forms. The serious anti Semitic riots took place in the Kingdom of Poland in November 1918, and some of them, like the one in Kielce and probably in a few other towns of the Kielce Province, were in fact pogroms. The next year brought a new wave of anti-Jewish pogroms and violence.
Ostatni rok Wielkiej Wojny przyniósł nasilenie działalności partii politycznych, zarówno polskich, jak i żydowskich, a także pogorszenie stosunków polsko-żydowskich. Wśród Żydów utrwalała się postawa niechętna współpracy z Polakami, a raczej przekonanie, że nie ma realnych szans na ugodowe ustalenie jej zasad. Inną przyczyną wzajemnych pretensji stało się forsowanie przez część stronnictw żydowskich autonomii narodowej i kulturalnej oraz próby poszukiwania zwolenników takich postulatów na Zachodzie. Kolejnym punktem zapalnym w stosunkach polsko-żydowskich stały się wydarzenia lwowskie (Lwów) i narastający konflikt polsko-ukraiński w Galicji Wschodniej. Pogłoski, które docierały do Królestwa Polskiego, mówiące o tym, że Żydzi sympatyzują z Ukraińcami w Galicji i „strzelają w plecy polskim żołnierzom”, dodały do tradycyjnych oskarżeń kierowanych pod adresem Żydów (współpraca z Niemcami i Austriakami, sympatyzowanie z komunistami) jeszcze jeden element, którego konsekwencje trudno zignorować. Równocześnie propaganda antysemicka zebrała wszystkie opozycyjne deklaracje Żydów i ich krytyczne uwagi pod adresem polskich zasad, a następnie, świadomie je przeinaczając, przedstawiła ludność żydowską jako element wrogi państwu polskiemu, co na ogół nie było prawdą. Jesienią 1918 roku ludność żydowska z obawą powitała wyzwolenie ziem polskich. Nie były to obawy bezpodstawne: już wiosną tego roku można było zauważyć, że wrogość wobec Żydów przybierała coraz ostrzejsze formy. Poważne rozruchy antysemickie miały miejsce w Królestwie Polskim w listopadzie 1918 roku, a niektóre z nich, jak ten w Kielcach i zapewne w kilku innych miastach województwa kieleckiego, były w istocie pogromami. Kolejny rok przyniósł nową falę pogromów i przemocy antyżydowskiej.

Próba zrozumienia różnych sposobów ukazywania Holokaustu w kinie izraelskim była już podejmowana w licznych opracowaniach naukowych. Chociaż badania te wyróżniają się szerokim zakresem tematów, procesów i perspektyw, nie zawierają one odniesień do różnych ujęć relacji polsko‑żydowskich obecnych w kinie izraelskim. Niniejszy artykuł rozpoczyna dyskusję nad sposobami ukazywania relacji polsko‑żydowskich na podstawie takich filmów dokumentalnych i fabularnych, jak: Aba’le Bo La‑lonapark Nitzy Gonen z 1995 roku, Wiosna 1941 Uriego Barbasha z 2007 roku, Pizza b’Auschwitz (Pizza w Auschwitz) Mosha Zimmermana z 2008 roku, Ema Shel Valentina (Matka Walentyny) Arika Lubzkiego i Mattiego Hararriego z 2009 roku czy Hakatayim (Past Life) Aviego Neshera z 2016 roku. Proponowana dyskusja o postrzeganiu relacji polsko‑żydowskich zaprezentowana w powyższych filmach może wzbogacić naszą wiedzę o nich po II wojnie światowej i w jej trakcie.
There is already wide range of studies that aim at understanding the different ways in which the Holocaust is presenting in Israeli cinema. Although these studies present wide spectrum of themes, processes and points of view regarding this issue, this rich corpus of research does not include references to the various ways in which Polish-Jewish relations are portrayed in Israeli films. This article is interesting to open scholarly discussion on the ways in which Jewish-Polish relations are presenting in in several documentary and fictional Israeli films: Aba'le Bo La-lonapark (Daddy Come to the Amusement Park), directed by Nitza Gonen in 1995; Spring 1941, directed by Uri Barbash in 2007; Pizza b'Auschwitz (Pizza in Auschwitz) by Mosh Zimmermanh in 2008; Ema shel Valentina (Valentina's Mother), directed by Arik Lubzki and Matti Hararri in 2009; and Hakatayim (Past Life) directed by Avi Nesher in 2016. A discussing  on the perception  of Polish Jewish relations at this collection of films can add an additional angle to the topic of Polish-Jewish relations during and after the Second War World.
