Polish PKO BP and Hungarian OTP Bank are the largest, dominant national bankinginstitutions of a similar nature – universal banks with a strong emphasis on retail operations.However, they differ significantly because of international activities. PKO BP has only local bankin Ukraine, and the OTP group is present in 9 countries in CEE. The relatively strong economicposition of both banks, similar history would indicate that their activities related to foreignexpansions should develop in the same way. However, this hasnʼt happen. Among a number ofreasons we should include cultural aspects, closely bound up with the legacy of the past, politicaland economic circumstances for both countries.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the challenges of expanding into an emerging market for multinational enterprises (MNEs) and the strategies they adopted to overcome these adversities. While interest in the expansion of MNEs into the Vietnamese market is increasing, there is a lack of research on this process from the Polish businesses' perspectives, which may differ from existing literature. The analysis of information obtained by a semi-structured interview method shows that the psychic/cultural distance is the most critical challenge the Polish enterprises must face when entering the Vietnamese market. The study also shows that the key success factor for the expansion of the Polish enterprises into this market is a local partner, i.e., acquiring an appropriate Vietnamese partner, good cooperation with him/her, and building mutual trust. As a result, among the available forms of internationalization, the Polish enterprises most often choose export and various forms of cooperation with local partners as the main ways to enter this market.

This study will primarily focus on Jerónimo Martins’ international expansion to examine if it is desirable for the Group to continue its expansion into other “Visegrad Group” countries. The study takes into consideration the fantastic success of the company on the Polish market and investigates the reasons for their recent expansion to Colombian market, thereby avoiding further expansion on the European market. The study evaluates SWOT analysis, as well as KSF and concludes, that it is advisable that company sticks to its strategy of expanding to highly populated, emerging markets. The herein analysis was developed using information provided by the Group and also by international economic institutions.
W artykule podjęty został temat międzynarodowej strategii ekspansji Grupy Jerónimo Martins działającej w obszarze handlu i dystrybucji produktów żywnościowych. Celem niniejszej pracy jest próba odpowiedzi na kwestie związane z wejściem na rynek krajów „Grupy Wyszehradzkiej”. Biorąc pod uwagę spektakularny sukces Jerónimo Martins na polskim rynku oraz niedawne otwarcie się JM na rynek kolumbijski, zbadano, które czynniki wpłynęły na wybór tych lokalizacji oraz przeanalizowano, czy ekspansja do pozostałych państw „Grupy Wyszehradzkiej” jest działaniem pożądanym. W artykule przedstawiono analizę mocnych i słabych stron, szans i zagrożeń dla Jerónimo Martins, a także „głównych czynników sukcesu”. Analiza została przeprowadzona na podstawie informacji opublikowanych przez JM oraz międzynarodowe instytucje gospodarcze.

Aim/purpose – This study investigated the effect of corporate entrepreneurship (measured by innovation, risk taking, proactiveness, strategic renewal and corporate venturing) on the international performance (measured by managers’ perceived measures of international business performance) of Nigerian international banks. Design/methodology/approach – Survey research design was used for the study, through the administration of structured questionnaire to management staff in strategy, foreign operations and finance departments. The study employed a census survey, in which the entire 427 management staff of strategy, foreign operation and finance departments of the ten CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria) licensed international banks constituted the population and the sample (census survey). The models were estimated using ordinary least square, using STATA 14 software.Finding – The study revealed that corporate entrepreneurship elements (innovation, proactiveness, risk taking, strategic renewal and corporate venturing) all have individual and combined positive and significant effect on banks international performance at 95% confidence level. However, innovation has the most effect on Nigerian banks international performance. Research implications/limitations – The study employed managers’ perceived measures of international business performance to measure Nigerian banks international performance, which is subjective. A measure like revenue from the foreign subsidiary would have been considered but for the paucity of data. This of course can form the basis for further studies and expanded to cover the entire West Africa region. Originality/value/contribution – Studies examining the effect of corporate entrepreneurship on banks’ international performance in Africa are rare. Most Nigerian banks set-up foreign subsidiary in other Africa countries and there has been a debate on the contributions of the foreign subsidiaries to the banks’ bottom line and as well as a form of market expansion. The study expands the frontier of knowledge on Nigerian banks international performance by unbundling corporate entrepreneurship to see how each element will affect performance.

The article presents the Baltic-Black Sea region in the military-political dimension, as well as explores the potential benefits of this cooperation for European security. The study offers some important insights into the historical preconditions for the formation of the Union according to the Baltic-Black Sea Arc. This paper attempts to show the importance of international political and security potential of Ukraine and its influence on the formation of the Baltic-Black Sea Union. The Baltic-Black Sea Union is seen as an effective counterweight to Russia’s expansion into the West, whereby Ukraine could serve as a guarantor of European stability. The article analyzes opinions of international experts on the implementation of the Baltic-Black Sea Union, as well as compares the military power of potential members of the union with the military forces of advanced countries. This study provides an important opportunity to advance the understanding of the benefits for Union members and European countries and how the United States can help implement the idea of project. The analysis emphasizes the functions of the Baltic-Black Sea Union, potential NATO assistance and how the Union will ensure the stability of its forces in Europe. It is summarized why the countries of the Baltic-Black Sea arc can act as a guarantor of protection against Russian aggression.
