    In the paper, we present the development of symbolic interactionism (SI) in Poland by tracing and discussing its beginnings, as well as the influence the Chicago School had on the reception of SI in Polish sociology. Furthermore, we differentiate between two trends in the development of SI in Poland. One is connected with the early theoretical elaborations of the SI orientation and translations of classical books representing this perspective; another is linked with empirical work underpinned by SI concepts and the grounded theory approach in empirical research and data analysis. Stressing the importance of translations of classical texts of SI in its reception in Poland, we emphasize the role of field research and applications of SI concepts in sociological investigations that we shortly characterize.

    The powerful spreading of new technologies and the mass media civilization have had a subtle, stealthy effect onthe human imagination, a process that has its counterpart in external reality, in historical changes and in society.The role of imagination through historical changes was extensively explored by Ioan P. Culianu, a Romanian historian of religions and specialist in Late Antiquity and gnosticism, whose research was brutally interrupted by his assassination on May 21, 1991. He was shot to death around midday inside of a toilet at the Depart- ment of the Divinity School of the University of Chicago where he was teaching. He was only 41 years old.One of his main books is Eros and magic in the Renaissance (The University of Chicago Press, 1987), whichhas been translated into many languages and is probably one of the most complex and interesting 20th-century studies on magic. He points out that the working of fantasy was fundamental to comprehend magical processes in the Renaissance, since magic was primarily directed to affect human imagination through the manipulation of phantams (‘images’ in Greek). He has been also a pioneer in the study of the historical vicissitudes that caused imagination to change from a civilization based on magic, as in the Renaissance, to a modern one based on science. To the scholar, the transition from a magic-based society to a modern one is explicable primarily by a change in the imaginary.One of the purposes of this paper is to shed light on the work of Ioan P. Culianu, especially on his research onmagic, which he carried out throughout his life. Particularly interesting are the articles published in the last period of his life (1990–1991), when he was trying to develop a new paradigm of knowledge in the Humani-ties, concentrating on the study of the mind. He was shaping an original but uncompleted theory where the ‘cognitive revolution’ was to be applied across and beyond the contexts of human science.

    The author of this essay deals with the specificity of sociology in Poland, reaching for the book of Antoni Sułek A Mirror on the High Road. Chapters from the History of Social Research in Poland (2019). Chapters of this book taken as a set constitute a review of the key issues that Polish sociologists strived to tackle in the 20th century. For approximately half of the book (6 chapters) Sułek focuses on issues of Polish sociology from the mid-1950s to the turn of the 1990s: the first is the change of theoretical and methodological paradigms in Polish sociology in the second half of the 20th century; the second is the successes of Polish sociology, but also its weaknesses - the author devoted much space to the theoretical limitations that prevented sociologists from predicting the formation of Solidarity in 1980. The third topic is the historical analysis of surveys conducted in the last decade of communism - their reliability as well as social and political functions. Finally, Sułek’s vision of socially-involved sociology appears. The strength of such sociology lies in its methodology, with which specific phenomena can be correctly defined, impartially analysed, and systematically investigated. And this in turn enables evidence-based debate and policy.

    In German-language communication studies, the long-running debate about the in- creasingly important practical relevance of the subject is currently being picked up once again. In this article a refl ection on the history of the subject since 1945 will be used to formulate a predic- tion for the possible development of the subject and the practice-related research being undertaken within it. Four basic “currencies” of academic success will be drawn upon to do this: reputation, public attention, funding, and evaluation results. Th ese assist in constructing an alternative chron- ology of the subject, which also demonstrates the social forces which aff ect the “currencies.” Th is leads to the conclusion that the current incentive structures for each individual scientist in com- munication studies could lead to a bisection of the subject. One group will orientate itself increas- ingly on the requirements of modern science-based society and predominantly solve practical problems, while the second group will remain more dedicated to the classic understanding of science.

    The paper deals with the issue of “serendipity” (which constitutes the context of discovery) in field research and the analysis of data by using the grounded theory methodology. The thesis of the paper is: the methodology of grounded theory is naturally associated with serendipity. We describe two aspects of serendipity in grounded theory: 1. substantive, and 2. theoretical. We present in the paper serendipity phenomenon by using the case of research on the “social world of pet owners”. We show how the research is developed by a sequence of decisions being made by researchers. The process of emergence of the main analytical category, subcategories and the whole theoretical construction during the long time of the field research and theoretical group analysis is presented, as well as the procedure of coming to unanticipated theoretical conclusions. It was all possible because of the interactional character of serendipity happening during the research in grounded theory style of investigation.

    This book in an accessible manner examines education disciplines in one handy volume. In chapter one Barry Dufour presents an introduction to the history of education. Next chapter reveals the political, economic and social context for changes in contemporary education.     W perspektywie socjologii prawa przeanalizowano, w jaki sposób wydarzenia historyczne pierwszej połowy XX wieku wpłynęły na kształt współczesnej praktyki prawniczej. Posługując się jakościowymi wywiadami pogłębionymi, zebrano spostrzeżenia doświadczonych polskich prawników, wielu praktykujących jeszcze w okresie Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej czy w czasach transformacji lat 90. Ich świadectwa nie tylko rzucają światło na ewolucję sposobu pracy prawników, ale także podkreślają skomplikowaną relację między strukturami społecznymi a stosowaniem prawa dzisiaj i w przeszłości. Badanie ujawnia nierozerwalny związek między dawnymi warunkami społeczno-politycznymi a dzisiejszymi polskimi ramami prawnymi, etyką i praktyką prawników, podkreślając konieczność integrowania perspektywy socjologii prawa w nowoczesnej praktyce prawniczej.
    By employing the lens of the sociology of law, this research analyzes how the historical events in the first half of the 20th century have influenced the shape of contemporary Polish legal practise. By utilising qualitative in-depth interviews, insights were gathered from seasoned Polish legal professionals, many of whom had embarked on their careers in the period of People’s Republic of Poland or during the transformation in the 1990s. Their testimonies not only shed light on the evolution of the way lawyers’ work but they also emphasize the intricate interplay between societal structures and the application of law today and in the past. The study reveals an inextricable link between the socio-political context of the past and the present-day legal framework, ethics, and lawyers’ practice, thus highlighting the necessity of integrating the perspective of the sociology of law in modern legal practice.
