Opis:
The tests described in the article are related to the project of a high-altitude scientific rocket, which is expected to be built in the Institute of Aviation. The unguided rocket will be launched from a platform with a relatively long start beam and will be supported by slides at the start. Because of the relatively high rocket mass and nearly horizontal start needed for initial rocket tests, its slides will be under extremely high load defined as a combination of pressure and sliding velocity. In addition to the mechanical load, the slides will be also loaded thermally because of the friction in a pair: slide-guide rail (made of hard-anodized aluminium alloy). This leads to rapid wear of the slides. The aim of the tests was to establish what the friction coefficient between the slide and the guide rail is (as function of mechanical load) and how big slide-wear in a single work cycle (simulation of a single rocket launch) is. The tests were performed for few material samples: two modern plastics used in so-called “linear systems” (offered by a firm, which is one of the leaders on this market), samples made of well-known and widely used materials like cotton-phenolic textolite and well-known samples of material called Teflon (PTFE – polytetrafluoroethylene) with 15% addition of graphite. Results show that the temperature resistant plastic used in general linear systems at our condition are on the verge of wear according to our model. Textolite and Teflon with graphite addition have better characteristics of wear. They can be safely used as material of slides.

Opis:
Several machines with linear motor have been developed for high productivity. The characteristics of these machines are high speed, high acceleration and deceleration with stable behaviors of feed. Moreover, mirror-like surface is required to add high quality on the most products. In this study high speed lapping by using the lathe with linear motor was investigated for mirror-like surface. Lapping was performed after turning with the same lathe Lapping tool consists of a lapping head, a spring and holder on the tool post to assemble the linear motor lathe. The spring is used to supply lapping pressure. Lapping slurry consists of water, PEO ( Polyethylene Oxide) and diamond grain. This slurry was supplied between a work piece and lapping head. Then, high speed lapping was performed. During the process, the lapping head temporarily left from work surface in order to catch some new grains and removed some chips. The optimum combination of both the spindle speed and the feed speed was investigated for high quality and productivity experimentally. Surface roughness and form accuracy were measured. It was concluded from the results that (1) Mirror-like surface was obtained by the high speed lapping, and (2) Optimun conditions for efficient high speed lapping was revealed experimentally.

high-resolution ultrasonography
Opis:
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of high-resolution ultrasonography for the diagnosis of polyneuropathy in diabetes mellitus patients by the examination of the ulnar nerves. Method: We recruited 100 healthy age-matched volunteers (50 women and 50 men) with 200 arms without diabetes or cubital tunnel syndrome as the control group. We assessed the upper limbs of 100 diabetes mellitus patients (45 women and 55 men), 40 of whom had electrophysiologically confirmed diabetic peripheral neuropathy and 60 had no diabetic peripheral neuropathy in the upper limbs. Age, sex, height and weight were recorded and the cross-sectional area of the ulnar nerve was measured at every predetermined site. Results: The cross-sectional area of the ulnar nerve was measured at six sites (mid-humerus, inlet of the cubital tunnel, outlet of the cubital tunnel, upon the medial epicondyle, 6 cm upon the wrist crease and Guyon tunnel). The ulnar nerve in two measuring sites (mid-humerus, upon the medial epicondyle) in the control group showed a statistical difference between men and women (p < 0.05). There was no statistical difference in the cross-sectional area in the control group when dominant and non-dominant arms were compared. The cross-sectional area was larger in the diabetic peripheral neuropathy group in three sites (inlet of the cubital tunnel, outlet of the cubital tunnel, Guyon tunnel) compared with those in the control group. Conclusion: High-resolution ultrasonography may be helpful in the early diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy in diabetic patients.
Wyniki: Pole przekroju poprzecznego nerwu łokciowego zmierzono w sześciu miejscach (środek kości ramiennej, wejście do kanału łokciowego, wyjście z kanału łokciowego, nad nadkłykciem przyśrodkowym, 6 cm ponad nadgarstkiem i kanał Guyona). W grupie kontrolnej wykazano statystycznie istotną różnicę w nerwie łokciowym w dwóch miejscach pomiaru (środek kości ramiennej, nad nadkłykciem przyśrodkowym) pomiędzy mężczyznami a kobietami (p < 0,05). Nie wykazano różnicy statystycznej w polu przekroju poprzecznego w grupie kontrolnej podczas porównywania ręki dominującej i niedominującej. Pole przekroju poprzecznego było większe w grupie z obwodową neuropatią cukrzycową w trzech miejscach (wejście do kanału łokciowego, wyjście z kanału łokciowego, kanał Guyona) w porównaniu z grupą kontrolną. Wniosek: Ultrasonografia wysokiej rozdzielczości może okazać się pomocna we wczesnej diagnostyce neuropatii obwodowej u pacjentów z cukrzycą. Opis:
In order to utilize energy from low voltage power source it is necessary to use isolated DC/DC boost converter which will provide desirable input voltage step-up. To obtain a high voltage gain it is necessary to apply a magnetic device with the relevant turns ratio to the converter structure. This can be coupled inductor or transformer. The great advantage of the transformer is galvanic isolation between the subsequent power levels. Unfortunately, the high values of voltage gain is accompanied by significant currents on the primary transformer side. Large DC input currents cause an increase in power losses as the transistor conduction losses are proportional to square of current. The solution to this problem would be to divide a large input current into smaller currents through applying balancing transformers in converter structure. The input current in one stage exactly matches the current in the parallel branch, therefore there is no need for additional control to guarantee current balancing between power stages. This technique, together with the use of transistors with a small drain-source resistance and output SiC (silicon carbide) Schottky diodes enables converter to achieve necessary output voltage. This paper presents PSpice simulation results and mathematical analysis of half-bridge isolated DC/DC boost converter. In presented circuit high voltage gain and high conversion efficiency were achieved.

The renewable energy sources such as PV modules, fuel cells or energy storage devices such as super capacitors or batteries deliver output voltage at the range of around 12 to 70 VDC. In order to connect them to the grid the voltage level should be adjusted according to the electrical network standards in the countries. First of all the voltage should be stepped up to sufficient level at which the DC/AC conversion can be performed to AC mains voltage requirements. Overall performance of the renewable energy system is then affected by the efficiency of step-up DC/DC converters, which are the key parts in the system power chain. This review is focused on high efficiency step-up DC/DC converters with high voltage gain. The differentiation is based on the presence or lack of galvanic isolation. A comparison and discussion of different DC/DC step-up topologies will be performed across number of parameters and presented in this paper.

High-level languages (HLL) for defining hardware implementation are important in both academic and commercial research. Impulse C could be an example of such language. This environment provides a programming model and library of functions for parallel applications, targeting FPGA-based platforms with the ability to partition the algorithm between software and hardware. This article’saim is to briefly describe DVCPRO HD, one of the intra-frame video-coding algorithms widely used in consumer equipment. DVCPRO HD is a DCT -based lossy video coding algorithm which uses variable-length coding (VLC) and runlength encoding (RLE) to achieve a 5:1 compression ratio. This paper presents DVCPRO HD video-coding-standard principles as well as decoder implementation working in real-time, compliant with the afore-mentioned standard and implemented in Impulse C. According to the authors’ knowledge, the presented solution is the first FPGA implementation of this coding standard which includes all three VLC stages of data re-arrangement. What is more, this is the first DVCPRO HD implementation which utilizes Impulse C.

Initial investigations on oxidation behaviour and phase transformations of equimolar AlCoCrCuNi high entropy alloy with and without 1 at.% silicon addition during 24-hr exposure to air atmosphere at 1273 K was carried out in this work. After determining the oxidation kinetics of the samples by means of thermogravimetric analysis, the morphology, chemical and phase compositions of the oxidized alloys were determined by means of scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Additional cross-section studies were performed using transmission electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction. From all these investigations, it can be concluded that minor silicon addition improves the oxidation kinetics and hinders the formation of an additional FCC structure near the surface of the material.

The article presents the results of tests carried out on the manufactured composite materials based on a two-phase NiAl/Ni3Al matrix, which was enriched with the addition of TiB2 ceramic particles added in an amount of 4 and 7 vol%. The resulting mixtures were sintered by the High Pressure High Temperature (HP-HT) process. The results were compared to the results obtained for the sole matrix material produced under the same conditions. It has been shown that, at a lower density, the addition of reinforcing particles increases the composite hardness, Young’s modulus and resistance to frictional wear. However, higher addition of TiB2 (7 vol%) was observed to yield less satisfactory results, and despite higher hardness and lower density caused a decrease in other properties tested. The produced materials were characterized by a compact and highly differentiated microstructure free from any noticeable cracks and pores.

Opis:
Lapping is an old traditional machining process that has been useful all along in the human history. Uniform surface finishing by manual hand lapping on cylindrical inner and end surfaces are very difficult. Additionally, the geometrical form accuracy and productivity are lower. In a previous study, the new lapping method for outer cylindrical surface using the lathe with linear motor has been reported. However, this method could not be applied directly for the cylindrical inner and end surfaces. Therefore, lapping for mirror-like finish on cylindrical inner and end surfaces using the lathe with linear motor is investigated. In this study, lapping tool was modified from previous study to be suited for the cylindrical inner and end surfaces. Then, lapping methods for inner and end surfaces were developed for uniform mirror-like finish. Surface roughness and geometrical form accuracy improvement were measured for both surfaces. The optimum conditions for high productivity and high quality mirror-like surfaces were investigated. It was concluded from the results that, the developed lapping system was able to process mirror-like surface on cylindrical inner and end surfaces. Moreover, the optimum conditions for the mirror-like surfaces were revealed experimentally.

There is a continuous demand for high performance composite propellant formulations to meet future requirements. The performance of composite propellant formulations can be enhanced by the addition of energetic oxidizers, like ADN/HNF as well as an energetic binder & a plasticizer. However, on incorporation of energetic ingredients, the composition becomes sensitive, and thus processing, handling and transportation pose a greater threat. Therefore, a moderately high burn rate composition having a burn rate ~ 13-14 mmźs -1 at 7000 kPa was tailored by increasing the solid loading of the propellant from 85.15% to 87.27% with the help of ammonium perchlorate and process aids without affecting the burn rate and mechanical properties. The tailored composition was studied for different properties such as end of mix viscosity, density, mechanical & ballistic properties. The evaluated data reveal that the end of mix viscosity of the tailored composition is higher than the base composition, i.e., 672 Paźs and 2340 Paźs at the same temperature; however, this viscosity was castable using a pressure casting technique. The properties of the cured propellant reveal that there is an enhancement of density from 1.74 gźcm -3 to 1.79 gźcm -3 with no other changes in mechanical properties. The performance index of the tailored composition has been increased from 416 to 437, well supported by results of ballistic evaluation motors of 2 kg.

Opis:
The high-pressure torsion (HPT) of Ti-Fe alloys with different iron content has been studied at 7 GPa, 5 anvil rotations and rotation speed of 1 rpm. The alloys have been annealed before HPT in such a way that they contained different amounts of α/α' and β phases. In turn, the β phase contained different concentration of iron. The 5 anvil rotations correspond to the HPT steady-state and to the dynamic equilibrium between formation and annihilation of microstructure defects. HPT leads to the transformation of initial α/α' and β-phases into mixture of α and high-pressure ω-phase. The α → ω and β → ω phase transformations are martensitic, and certain orientation relationships exist between α and ω as well as β and ω phases. However, the composition of ω-phase is the same in all samples after HPT and does not depend on the composition of β-phase (which is different in different initial samples). Therefore, the martensitic (diffusionless) transformations are combined with a certain HPT-driven mass-transfer. We observed also that the structure and properties of phases (namely, α-Ti and ω-Ti) in the Ti – 2.2 wt. % Fe and Ti – 4 wt. % Fe alloys after HPT are equifinal and do not depend on the structure and properties of initial α'-Ti and β-Ti before HPT.

High-Speed Infrared Imaging
Opis:
Efforts are continuously made for improving internal combustion engines (ICEs) efficiency. Lowering fuel consumption and reducing soot formation are among the challenges being addressed when seeking to improve engine designs. In this work, ICEs characterization was carried out on an elongated single-cylinder transparent diesel engine equipped with the multi-cylinder head of a commercial passenger’s car and a common rail injection system. The engine uses a conventionally extended piston where part of the piston’s crown is replaced by a sapphire window. In this configuration, a full view of the combustion bowl can be achieved while the engine is in operation by looking at a 45° fixed mirror located in the extended piston axis. Infrared imaging was carried out at 26 kHz, leading to a temporal resolution of about 0.35° crankshaft angle, at 1500 RPM, in the engine’s reference frame. The different phases of a combustion cycle, i.e. intake, compression, fuel injection, working stroke and exhaust, were investigated using four different spectral filters (broadband, CO2 red-spike, through-flame and hydrocarbons). In the experiment, air was replaced by a premixed air-methane charge in order to improve combustion and lower the amount of soot deposits. The results illustrate the potential of high-speed IR imaging as a diagnostic tool for ICEs.
