The article analyses the issues in question by means of a method used in the legal sciences which in the Polish methodology is called “the historical and legal method.” It involves presentation and analysis of selected legal institutions and of their evolution in time. The following issues—identified across the pages of the Gospel—are analysed in this article: political and systemic context of evangelical events (section 1), the role of censuses in the implementation of Roman administrative and systemic principles (section 2), Roman tax law in the context of tax burdens resting on residents of Judea (section 3) and the Roman judicial procedure in the context of the trial of Jesus (section 4). In the summary the author answers the research question asked in the introduction: to what degree does the historical and legal significance of selected institutions of Roman law, inspired by the description of these institutions in canonical gospels of the New Testament, determine the contemporary understanding of the gospels themselves?

In this paper I analyze the character of Judas in the famous Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel. In The Last Temptation of Christ, Jesus is weak and full of doubt, and Judas is a volcano of energy. Furthermore, the Greek writer of his Judas makes a superman. Only through Jesus take his help to fulfill the mission for which it was intended. Judas is a realist novels, while Jesus lives in a dream world. Finally, Judas wins, but he is true to himself. Creation of Judas in Kazantzakis is different both from what we know from the Gospel of John, as well as the version of the apocryphal Gospel of Judas. Kazantzakis, however, does not tell the history of Judas as the next version of the fall of the traitor apostle, but announces original (although the opposite of ecclesiastical orthodoxy) version of Judas – a man who struggles with God (and even against God) for his own immortality.

The gospel songs of Ralph Stanley offer solace by means of identification with the singer’s losses and struggles, but they also offer a metaphoric framework of journey and homecoming found in many folk and country songs. The framework gives shape and meaning to the troubled aspects of life that make up much of the content of bluegrass songs, sacred and secular. Referencing Kenneth Burke’s early theories of rhetorical identification and symbolic appeal, this study reads the inclusion of gospel songs in stage and recorded performance as a secularized means of self-defi nition: singers and listeners are linked as people with common origins and destinations. While expected themes of repentance and faith run throughout these gospel songs, the progressive form of home that is lost and then recovered sets up a secular analogy to the story of sin and redemption so common in American Protestant Evangelicalism. By scattering these songs throughout a bluegrass performance, the journey toward home becomes the pathway by which all the troubles of betrayal, heartbreak, conflict, and hard times are borne and transformed. In place of creed or practices of piety, all are invited to find common purpose in the experiences of disappointment, regret, and loss in the knowledge that they are on the “Long Journey Home.”
Muzyka gospel Ralpha Stanleya daje pocieszenie poprzez możliwość identyfikacji z cierpieniem i zmaganiami piosenkarza. Jak w wielu utworach folkowych i w muzyce country znajdujemy tam również metaforę podróży i powrotu do domu. Ta metaforyczna rama nadaje kształt i znaczenie trudnym doświadczeniom życiowym, o których opowiada znaczna część utworów bluegrassowych, zarówno sakralnych jak i świeckich. Odwołując się do wczesnych teorii Kennetha Burke’a dotyczących retorycznej identyfikacji oraz symbolizmu, w niniejszym studium występy i nagrania muzyki gospel zostają odczytane jako zsekularyzowany sposób na samoidentyfikację: wykonawcy i słuchacze są połączeni jako ludzie o wspólnych korzeniach i celach. Motywy skruchy i wiary powtarzają się w utworach gospel, zaś powracający motywu domu, najpierw utraconego, a następnie odzyskanego, tworzy świecką analogię do historii grzechu i odkupienia, tak powszechnego w amerykańskim protestanckim ewangelizmie. Poprzez wykorzystanie tych motywów, w trakcie występu bluegrass, podróż do domu staje się wędrówką, w czasie której przeżywane i przekształcane są bolesne doświadczenia zdrady, rozpaczy, konfliktów. W miejsce wyznania wiary lub praktyk religijnych, słuchacze zapraszani są, by odnaleźli sens i cel doświadczanych rozczarowań, żalu i utraty w świadomości, że uczestniczą w „długiej drodze do domu”.

Intercalations are found in the Gospel of Mark. They are graphically described by the following scheme: A – B – A’. Mark’s convention consists of the break off narration (pericope A) through insertion of another one (B) and placing it inside. Such a technique is called intercalation, interpolation or a sandwich technique. The use of intercalation is somehow intended. The purpose of this article is to indicate a problem of criteria that will allow to select the texts of intercalations precisely. The analysis of the criteria and the features of intercalations corroborates the use of sandwich technique by Mark in the six commonly accepted by the biblical scholars conjoined narratives: 3:20-35; 5:21-43; 6:6b-31; 11:12-25; 14:1-11; 14:53-72 and also in case of the juxtaposed pericopes from the group of disputable ones: 8:1-21 and 15:40-16,8.DOI: https://doi.org/10.31743/ba.2018.8.3.03

Artykuł Filmowe transformacje Ewangelii. Perspektywa mariologiczna przedstawia analizę dwóch współczesnych obrazów o życiu Jezusa i Jego Matki: pochodzącego z roku 1995 francuskiego filmu Marie de Nazareth w reżyserii Jeana Dellanoya oraz powstałego cztery lata później dzieła Kevina Konnora Mary, Mother of Jesus. Przedmiotem analizy jest filmowa interpretacja życia Jezusa i Jego Matki opisanego na kartach Ewangelii. Charakteryzując obydwa obrazy, autor zauważył, że scenarzyści położyli akcent na wymiar historyczny, społeczny, polityczny i kulturo- wy epoki. W podobnej perspektywie ukazane zostało dzieło zbawcze Chrystusa oraz pełnia objawienia Bożego, która się w Nim zrealizowała. Należy podkreślić, że reżyserzy obydwóch obrazów wykazali troskę o to, aby postać Matki Jezusa została przedstawiona w sposób jak najbardziej wierny, prawdziwy i autentyczny. Dostrzeżone transformacje ewangelicznych opisów miały na celu pogłębienie niektórych aspektów, wydobycie nieznanych wątków, aby w sposób atrakcyjny i autentyczny ukazać życie Maryi. Tego typu interpretacje nie doprowadziły do znaczącej deformacji obrazu Błogosławionej Dziewicy. Dokonana analiza wykazała, że obrazy, mimo iż starają się wiernie oddać realia życia Jezusa i Maryi, to jednak akcentują zbytnio wymiar horyzontalny, podczas gdy nadprzyrodzony jest praktycznie nieobecny. Zbyt słabo podkreślono interwencje Boga w życiu Maryi oraz cuda dokonane podczas ziemskiej misji Jezusa, koncentrując się jedynie na najistotniejszych: wcieleniu, Bożym narodzeniu oraz tajemnicy paschalnej. Autor artykułu zauważa potrzebę stworzenia nowego języka, operującego symbolem, który byłby otwarty na wymiar transcendentny, pozwalając lepiej opisać tajemnicę Tego, który jest Nieogarniony i Święty.

The aim of the study is to present the poetry of Daniel Pastirčák, one of the most prominent spiritual poets in the contemporary Slovak literature. Through interpretation of his four book of verse, we attempt to name dominant features of his poetry. A thread of spiritual poetry can be seen since Old Slavonic literature, particularly St. Cyril’s foreword to his translation of the Gospels called Proglas. Since then, every period of literary history had active priests engaged in writing poetry, and a short survey of most important names is given in this study. We tackle general problems of writing spiritual poetry, especially the tension between its theological and poetic aspect. A good way to overcome this threatening imbalance is either the use of original imagery or particular human experience with faith as is shown in Pastirčák’s best poems. His philosophical and meditative poetry emphasizes the unity of the world, of man and nature, of earthly and divine. The speaker can see dualism in both: man and the world, combining it with the cyclical conception of time. He proves what is typical of good poetry and literature entirely: that they are able to point to spiritual values indirectly not only by their invocation. The Christian character of Pastirčák’s poetry is supported by his frequent references to the Bible, either direct quotations or paraphrases, or allusions. The diction of many of his poems, mainly in his first book of verse Tehilim, is biblical, too. We try to support our conclusions with quotations of particular poems or their extracts in English translation. The overall ambition of this study is the attempt to offer a relatively complex view upon Daniel Pastirčák as a poet, which, we hope, will contribute to the reception of spiritual poetry in Slovak literature.

The article addresses the importance of the Church’s missionary activity with respect to contemporary cultures and nations because she proclaims the Gospel and promotes the basic development in many corners of the world. By sending missionaries, the Church teaches the faith, Catechism, religious observances, life in accordance with the Commandments. She takes care of Christian formation of the faithful in a given particular Church. The Church organises pastoral and biblical apostolates in order to proclaim the light and hope of the Gospel in a way that is comprehensible to the modern man. It is argued in the article that the proper understanding of the missionary activity of the Church is essentially a realisation of universal human rights. The Church sees the need for respect of human rights on the part of world decision-makers; she appreciates the work of missionaries towards the good of nations and cultures, she sees a common denominator for evangelization and development of nations in terms of human rights. Provisions contained in covenants and treaties which guarantee the right to life and civilisational progress of all people are often disobeyed, therefore the Christ’s Church uses her authority to get involved in the process of evangelization activities and all types of activity intended to improve the communal life of people of good will.

To evangelise is to proclaim Jesus Christ, that is, to tell people the story of the eternal word of the Father, which became flesh and has since permeated the history of humanity. Christians preach the Gospel with the help of stories, because the ultimate word that God addresses to humanity is the story of Jesus, the Son of God. There is great performative power in novels: although they do not demand or command anything, they prompt their addressees to reflect on themselves and their attitudes, and then to open themselves up to the action of God and change their lives. The Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ, told to the world will move its audience when the stories told to people are true and provide a respond to the deepest human need. Evangelisers must tell the story of God's saving God's saving love in a clear and interesting way, respecting human freedom in deciding for or against Christ. for or against Christ. Such a proclamation of the Gospel guarantees that the Christian message will be listened to and accepted by people with all their souls (cf. EN 23).

Since the 1990s, when religious education began to be offered once again in Polish public schools, a disturbing phenomenon has been observed: more and more students are choosing not to participate in religious education classes. This problem is more prominent in Poland’s largest cities. The purpose of the present article is to point out new ways to use modern extracurricular activities to engage and attract young students who have abandoned religious education. Such extracurricular activities must be voluntary, different from typical school activities, and appeal to students’ current interests. Research demonstrates that the most frequent reason why students opt not to participate in religious education classes is not because they oppose what the courses teach, but because they are too lazy to participate in them. Creatively organized extracurricular activities can be a great catechetical opportunity to counteract Polish students’ tendency to cease participating in religious education at school.

The case of the so-called Gospel of Jesus’ Wife lays bare all the problems of research on early Christian manuscripts. We have here a manuscript of unknown provenance, a private collector wishing to protect his anonymity, an academic institution hungry for media interest, and, last but not least, the ideological bias of a scholar. In the end, the manuscript proved to be a modern forgery. However, we know this without any serious doubt not thanks to laboratory analyses and more traditional paleographic or historical studies. The issue was not resolved until a professional journalist conducted a journalistic investigation. If this method of verification of manuscript authenticity joins the others, it would be an undisputable benefit of this whole four-year-long saga.

A thorough analysis of the genealogies in Gen 4:17–5:32 has shown that they are the result of a highly creative (hypertextual) and at the same time strictly sequential reworking of an older text of Deut 2:9–23. This means that the theories postulating the genealogies in Gen 4:17–5:32 as having come from various hypothetical sources of the Pentateuch (J, P, etc.) are no longer necessary to explain their origin and function. Similarly, detailed analysis of the genealogies presented in Luke 3:23–38 and Matt 1:1–17 has demonstrated that the Matthean genealogy is the effect of a deliberate reworking of the earlier genealogy composed by Luke. That, in turn, means that the theory of the “Q source,” intended to serve as an explanation of the origin of the Matthean–Lucan materials that had not come from the Gospel of Mark, is also exegetically superfluous.

The roots that raised Elvis Presley to become the man that he is in history, are not found in rock’n’roll but they go much deeper. They are found in the Gospel, in what Joe Moscheo defined as “the Gospel side of Elvis”. This paper highlights the gospel music of Elvis Presley and its vast impact on American society and religion. One of the aims of this article is to underline the impact that sacred music had over Presley’s artistical work and how Elvis and his Southern spirituality influenced the history of Christian music. One more important aspect of this paper argues the worldwide role Presley had as an evangelist of the Gospel, and how he influenced Christian identity and its values among Americans. This paper tried to answer to Mark Duffet’s question: “If star musicians are positioned as centers of attention, what happens when they use their privileged position in the spotlight to offer a ‘spiritual’ message?”. As a result, this paper offers original contents of Elvis Presley’s faith and spirituality and is intended as a starting point for future studies. Surprisingly, few researchers have evaluated the effect the singer had on evangelization and gospel music development. Previous studies have mostly paid attention to the role that Elvis played on the Rock’n’Roll scene and the iconic legend created around him. They forget that the Gospel is a key part of Presley’s life and music.
