The article aims to look for a way to geographically delineate the notion of target culture in the language textbook “The World We Live in” by Ogasawara et al. (2013) published in Japan for Japanese students and teachers. Looking at the textbooks as cultural artefacts, we identified geographical space within the scope of the sample textbook and analysed the pedagogical context the place names appeared in. By doing that we attempt to find the spatial bias of the book, which is a manifestation of values there inscribed, often called the “hidden curriculum”. The elaborated method, following a seminal study by Risager (2018), is an attempt to adapt the proposed content analysis of the textbooks into GIS tools in order to capture the geographic dimension of the content. The method serves as a stepping stone towards the creation of a model to analyse and identify the attitudes toward the cultural content of educational materials. This will not only enable a more authentic classroom experience responding to the needs of particular groups of students and teachers but also look for ways to make the textbooks more inclusive.

Relic Pinus cembra forests were among the least studied plant communities in the Western Car- pathians. Their distribution in this mountain range is limited only to the Tatras. The lack of comprehensive research on the Polish and Slovakian sides of the Tatras led to considerable discrepancy regarding their distribution (300–1170 ha) as well as habitat conditions. Their occurrence on limestones and in the West- ern Tatras was contested. Therefore, the aim of this work was to determine the distribution and habitat conditions for the occurrence of Swiss stone pine forests in the Tatras. We mapped the entire range of the distribution of these forests, using the topographic method and digitized it in ArcGIS 10.2.2. Afterwards, we undertook spatial analysis, using DEM regarding their occurrence, depending on: altitude, inclination, solar radiation, exposure, geology and soil. To determine the preferable site conditions we used the logistic regression model. The total area of P. cembra forests in the Tatras is 916.93 ha. They occur in all mountain ranges within the Tatras. Altitude, inclination and solar radiation have significant impacts on the occur- rence of these forests. The odds of the occurrence of P. cembra forests increased by 0.5% for every 1 m of altitude, by 2% for every 1° of inclination and decrease by 0.1% for every 1 MJ/m2/year of solar radiation. The majority of these forests grow in the altitude range 1300–1650 m a.s.l. (95%) and on slopes with 20–60° inclinations (80%). Swiss stone pine forests occur both on slopes with low (1900 MJ/m2) and high annual solar radiation (3400 MJ/m2). They prefer slopes with North-western exposure. They may grow both on granite and limestone, while the majority of them were mapped on granite. Pinus cembra forests grow on diverse soils, both acidic and alkaline. Nevertheless, most of them occur on Haplic Podzols (52%). The results may be applicable to the Tatra National Park for the conservation and monitoring of this Natura 2000 habitat.

Mining of rock minerals, constitutes a strong stimulus for economic development and at the same time, can significantly and negatively affect the state of natural environment, roads and well-being of local communities. This paper presents methodology for studies of spatial impact of rock minerals mining in the Lower Silesia region (SW Poland). In the region majority of magmatic, metamorphic and other rock minerals occur in Poland and their intensive mining is an important sector of regional economy. The concept of mining density (mineral production per unit area) has been introduced and the changes of rock minerals mining in the period of the last 8 years (2006-2013) have been analysed and presented graphically with GIS-based methodology. Mining density increased from 2006 to 2011 and decreased from 2011 to 2013. Change in the spatial pattern of mining density between 2006 and 2013, despite comparable volume of rock minerals production, has been identified. In addition proximity of mines to human settlements, nature protection areas and railways (potential transport routes) has been analysed. Comprehensive and coherent information on rock minerals mining for the area of Lower Silesia provided in this study has been used in developing and implementing regional spatial development policy and attaining the balance between the economic needs, nature protection requirements and the well-being of its citizens.

Mapping and assessment of erosion risk is an important tool for planning of natural resources management, allowing researchers to propose modifi cation in land-use properly and implement more sustainable management strategies in the long-term. The Tapacurá river catchment, located in Pernambuco State, Northeastern Brazil, is one of the planning units for management of water resources of Recife Metropilitan Region (RMR), and it is divided into 12 sub-basins. The objective of this study is to evaluate the spatial variability of vegetal cover and sediment yield in this basin through remote sensing and GIS techniques. Maps of the erosivity (R), erodibility (K), topographic (LS), cover-management (C) and support practice (P) factors were derived from the digital elevation model (DEM), climate database, and soil and NDVI maps, taking into account information available in the literature. In order to validate the simulation process, Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) was estimated. The obtained NDVI map showed vegetation loss during the analyzed period, indicating a distinct contrast between loss and gains of vegetation index. The vegetation and sediment yield mapping showed to be a useful tool for environmental monitoring and management, which can provide satisfactory results when jointly used. The results suggest a mean SDR around 0.9 and estimate the sediment yield as 23.98 ton/ha/month.
Analiza przestrzenna ilości sedymentu oraz pokrywy roślinnej w zlewni rzeki Tapacura określona na podstawie zdalnych obserwacji oraz analizy GIS. Artykuł przedstawia sposób wykorzystania zebranych w terenie danych dotyczących pokrywy roślinnej oraz ilości sedymentu określonego za pomocą zdalnych obserwacji oraz analizy GIS w celu monitorowania środowiska i zarządzania zlewniami. W pracy wykorzystano metodę USLE-SDR, a także cyfrowy model terenu. Badania prowadzono w zlewni rzeki Tapacura w północno-wschodniej Brazylii. Wyniki sugerują przyjęcie wartości parametru SDR = 0,9, a oszacowana wielkość transportu rumowiska wynosi 23,98 t/ha/miesiąc.

In recent years Prosecco, the renowned Italian sparkling wine, has become an increasingly popular product globally, leading to a massive expansion of viticulture within Prosecco's production zones (north-eastern Italy). Through qualitative and quantitative methods, this paper provides the first empirical analysis of the landscape and land-use modifications generated by the planting of new vineyards. Specifically, it seeks to reconstruct both the long-term historical factors that brought about the emergence of the specific winescape (today a candidate for becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the recent conversion of croplands, grassland, and woodland to wine-growing areas. The landscape, particularly on the plains, is radically changing due to the new, large geometric plantations that are perfectly suited to mechanical viticulture. This paper's conclusions argue for overall regulation of such a booming monoculture in order to effectively harmonize the production needs of wine-growers with the needs of other land-uses (mostly residential), and to protect the historical landscape patterns and ecological biodiversity.

Economic growth and development are connected with the increase in consumption. One of the side effects of progress is waste production. Sustainable development would also include proper management of waste, focusing on their recycling. However, the direct costs of recycling sometimes exceed the costs of waste storage. Therefore, waste storage in landfills is still widespread. Improper waste storage or deliberate actions can lead to waste fires. In the work, the statistics of landfill fires from the years 2012 to 2021 were analyzed. The work includes statistics of the parameters of fires reported in the reports of Polish State Fire Services. Additionally, the usage of the resources and materials for firefighting and their trends were discussed. It was shown that resources required for extinguishing waste fires were increasing in this period. The statistics are accompanied by spatiotemporal analyses of the location of fires based on Corine Land Cover which showed that approximately half of the fires are on arable land and non-continuous urban fabric while fires at dumpsites are relatively rare. The important concern is also that around 10% of very big waste fires are in forests. All these analyses lead to the assessment of some environmental impacts which are caused by waste fires.

Cost-suitability land modeling is one of the mandatory conditions for the proposal of new transport development projects, in order to achieve optimal costs of design and construction. In the present study, we intend to present a model for assessing land suitability for current and proposed transport infrastructure along the Orient-East Med TEN-T Corridor, in the mountainous region of the Timiș-Cerna Corridor (Romania). The relevant factors for our analysis were outsourced from various thematic data sets and refer to lithology, morphological and morphometrical properties of landforms, soil characteristics and climatic setting of the study area. Conservation of natural environment and human habitat was also taken into consideration by means of analyzing land use patterns and spatial distribution of protected areas. The methodology is based on the principles of cartographic algebra and vector overlay analysis, currently implemented in various GIS applications. The results of our study aim for the identification of critical sectors along the current and proposed transport infrastructure, which intersect areas with high development cost and low suitability. Starting from our observations, specialists in transport networks and spatial planning could make use of dedicated computation algorithms to identify and describe optimal routes for future infrastructure projects that would connect the southern and western parts of the country.

The article presents results of an analysis of changes to the landscape in zones directly bordering with Central European cities of medium size. Authors have designated and analysed 57 zones as buffers contained within a radius of 30 km from the administrative city boundaries. Transformations of the landscape were determined on the basis of three indicators showing the fragmentation of the land use forms, distortions of area patches with different land uses, and an increase in the diversification of functions. The data adopted for the study originated from CORINE Land Cover, determined for two points of time i.e. the years 2006 and 2012. The obtained results indicate that the changes to the landscape, identified on the basis of the selected indicators, are strongly linked to the increase in the size of urban areas. The analysis also showed a clear differentiation between cities situated in Central European countries.

W wiejskich krajobrazach można dostrzec wielką różnorodność środowiska, co zapewnia zwiększanie wartości rekreacyjnych, związanych z użytkowaniem gruntów, które jednak w dalszym ciągu są ograniczone. W artykule analizuje się wartości rekreacyjne związane z różnym użytkowaniem gruntów wykorzystując metodę wyceny hedonicznej (HPM). Próba składa się z 986 wakacyjnych cen wynajmu apartamentów i domków w Niemczech w roku 2013. Zestaw danych zawiera szczegółowe informacje na temat kilku zmiennych strukturalnych, takich jak wielkość zakwaterowania. W celu przeanalizowania wpływu użytkowania ziemi na ceny wynajmu, możliwe jest włączenie sześciu rodzajów użytkowania typów gruntów i ekosystemów, tj.: lasy, grunty orne, łąki, wody świeże (rzeki i jeziora), wody morskie i tereny podmokłe. Następnie zbadano wpływ odległości od najbliższego większego miasta na ceny wynajmu po to, aby kontrolować dodatkowe zmienne lokalizacji. Wyniki wskazują na kapitalizację zmiennych strukturalnych i odpowiadających za wykorzystanie ziemi. Wśród zmiennych użytkowania gruntów duży, pozytywny wpływ na zmienną cenową dla buforu 20 km, mają przede wszystkim odległość do rzek i jezior, wód morskich i terenów podmokłych. Wyniki pokazują również odwrotną zależność między ceną wynajmu, a wysokim udziałem gruntów ornych, lasów i pastwisk, co sugeruje preferencje turystyczne dla bardziej zróżnicowanych krajobrazów.
Rural landscapes provide a high variety of environmental and recreational benefits, yet knowledge of the amenity values associated with land use is still limited. This paper analyses the amenity values associated with different land uses by applying the Hedonic Pricing Method (HPM). The sample consists of 986 rental prices for holiday apartments and cottages in Germany for 2013. The data set provides detailed information on several structural variables such as size and capacity of the accommodation. In order to analyse the impact of land use on rental prices, we incorporated coverage variables for the six land use and ecosystem types: forest, arable land, grassland, freshwater (rivers and lakes), marine water and wetlands. We further investigated the impact of the distance to the nearest major city on rental prices to control for additional location variables. The results show a capitalisation of structural and land use variables in rental prices. Among the land use variables, the coverage of rivers and lakes, marine waters and wetlands in a 20 km-buffer around the accommodation in particular has a high positive impact on the price variable. Additionally, the results show an inverse relation between rental prices and high shares of pastures, arable and forestland, suggesting tourists’ preferences towards more diverse landscapes.

Miejskie Przestrzenie Zielone (UGS), takie jak parki i lasy, zapewniają szeroki zakres korzyści środowiskowych i rekreacyjnych. Jednym z celów w działaniach ochronnych UGS jest analiza korzyści związanych z nimi, aby stały się one bardziej widoczne i zapewniać im wsparcie w zakresie planowania krajobrazu. Artykuł analizuje wpływ UGS na ceny domów, z wykorzystaniem metody ceny hedonicznej (HPM). Zestaw danych zawiera ponad 85 046 transakcji dla mieszkań, geograficznie kodowanych, w latach 1995-2012 i zawiera informacje dotyczące trzech istotnych zmiennych nieruchomości (np. ceny transakcyjnej, powierzchni użytkowej i wieku). W celu zbadania kapitalizacji UGS w cenach nieruchomości, włączone zostały geokodowane dane przekrojowe dla różnych typów UGS: lasy, parki, pola uprawne i ugorów, pochodzące z Europejskiego Atlasu Miejskiego (EUA), Europejskiej Agencji Ochrony Środowiska z roku 2006. W celach sterowania, dla dodatkowych kategorii otwartych przestrzeni, włączono dane geokodowane dla zbiorników wodnych i ugorów. Korzystanie z Systemu Informacji Geograficznej (GIS), możliwe było obliczenie zasięgu UGS w predefiniowanych buforach wokół gospodarstw domowych, jak również odległości, wyrażonej w sposób ciągły (odległość Euklidesowa) pomiędzy UGS i gospodarstwami domowymi. Wyniki wskazują na kapitalizację UGS w cenach nieruchomości, ale efekt zmiennych strukturalnych jest wyższy. Wykazano pozytywny wpływ cen parków, lasów i wody oraz odwrotną zależność między zmienną cen, a obecności ugorów i gruntów rolnych.
Urban Green Spaces (UGS), such as parks and forests, provide a wide range of environmental and recreational benefits. One objective in the conservation efforts of UGS is to analyse the benefits associated with UGS in order to make them more visible and to provide support for landscape planning. This paper examines the effects of UGS on house prices applying a Hedonic Pricing Method (HPM). The data set contains over 85046 geo-coded apartment transactions for the years 1995-2012 and contains information on three intrinsic variables of the real estate (e.g. transaction price, floor area and age). In order to examine the capitalisation of UGS in real estate prices, we further incorporated cross-section geo-coded data for the different types of UGS: forests, parks, farmland and fallow land drawn from the European Urban Atlas (EUA) of the European Environment Agency for the year 2006. In order to control for additional open space categories, we further incorporated geo-coded data on water bodies and fallow land. Using a Geographical Information System (GIS), we calculated the coverage of UGS in pre-defined buffers around households as well as the distance in a continuous fashion (Euclidian distance) between UGS and the households. Our results show a capitalisation of UGS in real estate prices, but the effect of the structural variables is higher. We found a positive price effect of parks, forests and water and an inverse relation between the price variable and the presence of fallow land and farmland.

Application of a complex assessment of landslide hazards in mountain regions. The main regional factors of occurrence and activation of landslides within the mountain region were examined. As a result of study of recommendations made by experts, geologists, and gap analysis of existing methods of forecasting the landslide process, an algorithm of comprehensive assessment of landslide hazard areas based on the construction of models in a GIS environment was proposed. These models describe the spatial patterns of landslides. All factors determining the tendency of the studies area to the landslide process development were divided into actual factors, reflecting the regional peculiarities of the territory and forming the landslide-prone slopes (static model), as well as triggering factors, initiating the landslide process and determining its activity (dynamic model). The first cartographic model was built, showing the distribution of the deterministic indirect indicator of landslide hazard, i.e. stability index.

Opis:
Migration has a principal influence on countries’ population changes. Thus, the issues connected with the causes, effects and directions of people’s movements are a common topic of political and academic discussions. The aim of this paper is to analyse the spatial distribution of officially registered foreign migration in Poland in 2012. GIS tools are implemented for data visualization and statistical analysis. Geographically weighted regression (GWR) is used to estimate the impact of unemployment, wages and other socioeconomic variables on the foreign emigration and immigration measure. GWR provides spatially varying estimates of model parameters that can be presented on a map, giving a useful graphical representation of spatially varying relationships.

Opis:
The sustainable implementation of highway projects requires a sensitivity analysis of the terrain and all of its components that have a direct influence on road design, construction and operation. The result of this inquiry involving GIS techniques and methods regarding environmental and economic factors helps in choosing the optimal road route, in order to meet the real-world connectivity requirements. The sensitivity analysis can be applied to road and rail infrastructure projects, aiming to develop a decision-making tool that can be employed by their potential beneficiaries, according to their purposes and interests. This paper aims to create an objective decision-making tool for transport infrastructure development in correlation with the current needs of society regarding the development of transport infrastructure in an economic sustainable manner with low environmental impact. Furthermore, the study tries to identify the best highway corridor in an area with environmental constraints (especially geomorphological), that is in balance with both environment and financial resources.

Opis:
The paper analyses territory zoning methods with varying degrees of anthropogenic pollution risk. The summarized results of spatial analysis of oil pollution of surface water in the most developed oil-producing region of Russia. An example of GIS-zoning according to the degree of environmental hazard is presented. All possible algorithms of cluster analysis are considered for isolation of homogeneous data structures. The conclusion is made on the benefits of using combined methods of analysis for assessing the homogeneity of specific environmental characteristics in selected territories.
