Opis:
The research study evaluated the phytochemical constituents of Methanol extracts of Moringa oleifera whole leaf by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT/IR) analysis. The leaves was washed, air dried for 2 weeks, then ground into a fine powder and extracted using methanol by maceration for 24 hours using standard procedures. After the contact time elapsed, the solvent filtered to recover the extract. The functional groups and the chemical constituents of the methanol extract of Moringa oleifera leaves investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT/IR) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) respectively. The FT/IR analysis confirmed the presence of O-H, C=C, C-H, C-O, CH3 and C=C-H bond stretching functional groups, which indicates that the substance is an aliphatic alcohol, ester, aldehyde and carboxylic acid. However, the fingerprint region had a pattern that is specific for every molecule, the presence of -OH function and N-O stretch; suggest that or alcohols and nitrogen or aromatic or aliphatic phenols containing molecules are major components of the Moringa oleifera leaf studied. GC-MS analysis of the extract reveals the identification of twenty compounds, in which two compounds were identified in each peak. N,N'-Pentamethylenebis[s-3-aminopropyl thiosulfuric acid and 2-Myristynoyl pantetheine (100%), 2-Myristynoyl pantetheine and Deoxyspergualin (92.05%), 5-Octadecenal and 9-Hexadecenoic acid (27.94%). N,N'-Pentamethylenebis[s-3-aminopropyl thiosulfuric acid and Pentetic Acid are the major phytoconstituents. Most of the compounds in the list are bioactive and possess medicinal properties, which further justify the application of Moringa oleifera traditional plant in the discovery of novel therapeutics.

Abstract: Rhododendron tomentosum possesses the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial properties, determined by the chemical composition of its essential oil. The effects of place (Miszewko, Lubichowo) and time of harvesting (June, November) as well as drying (air-drying, oven-drying, freeze-drying) and isolation (in Deryng, Clevenger and Likens-Nickerson apparatus) procedures on the yield and quality of R. tomentosum essential oil were studied. Ledol (8.1-14.4%), palustrol (6.9-13.0%) and γ-terpineol (8.5-9.1%) predominated in the plants collected from Miszewko, while γ-terpineol (11.8-22.2%), p-cymene (5.3-12.6%) and geranyl acetate (5.7-7.5%) prevailed in the biomass from Lubichowo. The shoots produced more volatiles in the flowering phase than in the end of the vegetation. Oven-drying at 30ºC with controlled air flow was suggested as the quick dehydration method. Hydrodistillation in Deryng and Clevenger apparatus resulted in comparatively high essential oil yield (about 1%). All studied drying and distillation methods did not influence significantly the general profile of R. tomentosum essential oil.

The insecticidal properties of essential oil derived via the hydro-distillation method from aerial parts of Artemisia judaica L. were tested against the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). The repellent activity assay of essential oil against C. maculates adults indicated that in concentrations of 63.7, 31.9, 15.9, 8.0 or 4.0 μg/cm2, the oil reduced egg laying by 92.5, 86.0, 61.8, 42.7 and 12.5%, respectively. Also, the residual-film assay showed that after 72 hours of treatment, concentrations of 50 and 40% were highly effective against the C. maculates adults. The sub-lethal effects of essential oil were investigated on fecundity and F1 progany by exposing adult females to treated seeds. Both LC25 and LC50 of essential oil significantly reduced F1 progany production compared to the control. The chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS and the resulting oil piperitone (32.4%), camphor (20.6%) and (E)-ethyl cinnnamate (8.2%) were found to contain the major constituents of the oil. This provided the insecticidal properties of the essential oil against cowpea weevil.

Essential oils (EOs) of Gaultheria procumbens were obtained by hydrodistillation with the yield of 1.30% ± 0.05 (v/dw) for leaves and 2.68% ± 0.08 (v/dw) for fruits. The GC-FID/MS analysis led to the identification of 64 volatile components, among which 27 were found in leaf EO, 49 in fruit EO, and 59 analytes were detected for the first time in G. procumbens. Methyl salicylate, which is known as a potent anti-inflammatory agent, was the dominant component making up to 97.5% and 99.8% of the total fruit and leaf EOs, respectively. The remaining volatiles of the leaves included mainly monoterpenes (α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene), methyl-o-anisate, massoilactone, spiro[4,5]decane-1-one, and aliphatic alcohols (heptan-2-ol, octan-1-ol), while the fruit EO contained apart from the dominant aliphatic and aromatic alcohols (benzyl alcohol, heptan-2-ol, p-cymen-7-ol) also carboxylic acids (3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, heptanoic acid, octanoic acid) and aldehydes (hexanal, furfural, pent-4-enal). The antibacterial activity of the EOs was evaluated using a microdilution broth method against twelve reference strains, as well as clinical and environmental isolates. Differences between activity parameters of both EOs were not statistically significant (p > 0.05) for most tested bacteria. On the other hand, both EOs were significantly more effective against Gram-negative (MIC, 8.2-10.0 mg/mL) than Gram-positive bacteria (MIC, 13.5-16.7 mg/mL). Leaves and especially fruits of G. procumbens cultivated in Poland were proved valuable sources of methyl salicylate-rich EOs of moderate antibacterial activity, which, therefore, could partly explain the traditional use of the plant materials and the EOs in the treatment of bacterial infections-related inflammatory disorders.

Opis:
Garcina kola leaves were collected, washed, dried and powdered. The ethanol extracts were first prepared by the simple method of cold extraction. The extracts were then characterized by the Phytochemical analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) to identify the fatty acids and heterocyclic compounds present in the leaf extracts. The FTIR analysis shows a variation of the peaks that indicate there is synergy among the functional groups of the extract. Moreover, the phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenol, saponins, tannins and steroids. The study reveals that the chemical constituents of Garcina kola leaf may be behind their medicinal values in phytomedicine.

Out of moulding sands used in the foundry industry, sands with organic binders deserve a special attention. These binders are based on synthetic resins, which ensure obtaining the proper technological properties and sound castings, however, they negatively influence the environment. These resins in their initial state these resins are not very dangerous for people and for the environment, thus under an influence of high temperatures they generate very harmful products, being the result of their thermal decomposition. Depending on the kind of the applied resin, under an influence of a temperature such compounds as: furfuryl alcohol, formaldehyde, phenol, BTEX group (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene), and also polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be formed and released. The aim of the study was the development of the method, selection of analytical methods and the determination of optimal conditions of formation compounds from the BTEX and PAHs group. Investigations were carried out in the specially designed set up for the thermal decomposition of organic substances in a temperature range: 500 – 1 300°C at the laboratory scale. The object for testing was alkyd resin applied as a binding material for moulding sands. The qualitative and quantitative analyses of compounds were performed by means of the gas chromatography coupled with the mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Opis:
Comparison of gas chromatographic methods GC/FID and GC/MS for quantification of 3-nitrotoluene (3-NT) in the presence of high concentrations of 2-nitrotoluene and 4-nitrotoluene, is presented. GC/FID linear regression allows calibration curves in the concentration range of mononitrotoluene (MNT) 0.5-10 mg/ml to be obtained. For GC/MS, a non-linear dependence of detector signal was observed, particular for higher MNTs concentrations. However, calibration data could be fitted stepwise with three separate calibration lines. Using regression parameters, detection and quantification limits of GC/FID and GC/MS methods were determined. Their values proved to be comparable for both methods. The experiments showed that determination of small concentrations of 3-NT in a large excess of the others is possible using both calibration curves and peak area i.e. in percentage terms.

Investigations were carried out in the specially designed set up for the thermal decomposition of organic substances in a temperature range: 5000C - 13000C at the laboratory scale. The object for testing was alkyd resin applied as a binding material for moulding sands. Within investigations the minimal amount of adsorbent necessary for the adsorption of compounds released during the decomposition of the resin sample of a mass app. 15 mg was selected. Also the minimal amount of solvent needed for the desorption of compounds adsorbed in the column with adsorbent was found. The temperature range, in which the maximal amounts of benzene, toluene, ethylobenzene and xylenes are released from the resin, was defined. The qualitative and quantitative analyses of compounds from the BTEX group were performed by means of the gas chromatography combined with the mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Opis:
Combustion of biomass materials based on wood combined with synthetic polymers was studied. Material types included plywood and wood chipboard. Wood chips prepared from hardwood – beech and softwood – spruce were used for comparison. Combustion process was characterized by thermal analysis – thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. Pyrolysis gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection was used for determination of organic compounds and their fragments formed during thermal decomposition. Attention was paid to organic compounds contained in wood-polymer composites.
Zbadano spalanie materiałów biomasowych na bazie drewna w połączeniu z syntetycznymi polimerami. Materiały zawierały sklejkę i drewniane płyty wiórowe. Do porównania użyto zrębków z drewna liściastego - drewna bukowego i miękkiego - świerka. Proces spalania scharakteryzowano prowadząc analizą termiczną - termograwimetrią i różnicową kalorymetrię skaningową. Do oznaczenia zawartości związków organicznych i ich pochodnych powstałych w trakcie procesu użyto pirolitycznej chromatografii gazowej z detekcją spektrometryczną. Zwrócono uwagę na związki organiczne zawarte w kompozytach drewno-polimer.

Opis:
TG-DTG-DSC, FTIR, DRIFT, and Py-GC-MS studies have been conducted to determine the effect of the thermal decomposition conditions and structure of foundry binder BioCo3 in the form of a composition poly(sodium acrylate)/dextrin (PAANa/D) on the progress of degradation in terms of processes occurring in foundry sands in contact with liquid metal. TG-DTG-DSC curves of the composition allowed us to determine the temperature range in which they do not undergo degradation, by which they do not lose their binding properties. With temperature increasing, physical and chemical changes occur that are related to the evaporation of solvent water (20–110°C), followed by the release of constitution water, and finally intermolecular dehydration (110–230°C). In this temperature range, processes that are mainly reversible take place. Within a temperature range of 450–826°C, polymer chains are decomposed, including the decomposition of side chains. Within a temperature range of 399–663°C, polymer composition decomposition can be observed (FTIR, DRIFT), and gas products are generated from this destruction (Py-GC-MS).

Opis:
The method of simultaneous determination of zearalenone and its metabolites in water with use of GC-MS chromatography was evaluated. The solid phase extraction SPE was used for analytes separation from water and as an enrichment method. The influence of compounds concentration and water sample volume on analytes recovery was investigated. The chromatographic analysis was preceded by conversion of compounds to trimethylsilyl ethers derivatives. The developed SPE-derivatization-GC/MS method allow to separate quaternary mixture of mycoestrogens with the quantitative analysis in water, when their concentration is greater than 0.2–0.5 ng/dm3. The repeatability of the results was from 1 to 8 %. The recovery of compounds exceeded 60 % for samples contains from 50 to 200 ng/dm3 of mycotoxins. The concentration of analytes and volume of the sample (100–500 cm3) did not have an influence on the extraction output. The developed method can be applied to analyze water samples containing mycoestrogens at the level of ng/dm3.
Ocenie poddano metodę równoczesnego oznaczania zearalenonu i jego metabolitów w wodzie z użyciem chromatografii GC-MS. Ekstrakcja do fazy stałej SPE wykorzystana została jako metoda wydzielania i wzbogacania analitów z wody. Badano wpływ stężenia i objętości próbki wody na odzysk związków. Z kolei przed chromatograficznym oznaczeniem mykoestrogeny przeprowadzono w etery trimetylosiliowe.
