Opis:
In this essay which comprises one of chapters in Frank Cioffi Freud and the Question of a Pseudoscience (Open Court, Chicago 1998, pp. 115-142) its author, the most harsh and provocative contemporary critic of psychoanalysis, has assembled reasons for concluding that psychoanalysis  is a pseudoscience. What makes this text unique among current offerings is the contrary view about a pseudoscience according to which it is constituted by methodologically defective procedures (in a sense of wilful which encompasses refined self-deception) rather than merely by formally defective theses.

In the first part of the paper the author focuses on the way the great historian and thinker Gershom Scholem understood the Lurianic idea of tsimtsum (i.e. divine contraction as the first act of creation) as the key category of Jewish theology. Next, he combines the conceptual structure emerging from the Scholemian understanding of tsimtsum with Jacques Derrida’s analysis of space. He suggests that the Platonic notion of khora as read by Derrida can be identified with the idea of tehiru, i.e. the void that comes into existence as a result of divine contraction. In the second part of the paper the author extends the equation even further by pointing out how the notion of khora-tehiru can be fruitfully combined with the idea of the “Freudian void,” the space created by the separation of the mother from the child in Freudian analysis of the emergence of the human subject. One of the benefits of such a conceptual merge is that the Scholemian/Derridean/Freudian space thus understood can be seen as permeated with a complex affective and libidinal dynamic. Drawing on various post-Freudian psychoanalytic theorists (Lacan, Klein, Winnicott, Green), the author proceeds to analyze this dynamic, focusing on the notions of mourning, anxiety and desire.

Might translation be a feminine/feminised activity because most translators are women, or because the target-language is maternal or because it embodies the paradox of the multi-skilled serving the mono-skilled? The second half of this essay focuses on the translation of psychoanalysis, especially Strachey’s brilliant yet much-criticised translation of Freud.

Kant is not generally recognised to be an Aristotelian hylomorphic Philosopher because of his extension of logic into Philosophical Psychology in the form of Transcendental Logic. This extension is a natural articulation of hylomorphic metaphysics. Aristotle’s 4 kinds of change, 3 principles, and 4 “causes” are all transformed into the Kantian system of categories of judgement and also transposed into the faculties of sensibility, understanding, and reason. The principles of noncontradiction and sufficient reason obviously have origins in Aristotelian logic and Metaphysics. Freud claims that he is writing the Psychology that Kant would have written had he written subsequent to the “divorce” between Philosophy and Psychology in 1870 but it is clear that Freud too must be considered a hylomorphic Psychologist. This latter claim must be true if it is the case that Kant can be regarded, a hylomorphic Philosopher. Freud regards Consciousness and psychological residues (rituals) that we find in institutions as vicissitudes of Instinct. Instinct is here of course a philosophical concept possessing an aim, an object, a bodily source and a demand for motor activity. Early vicissitudes of instincts are narcissistically based and give rise the genesis of a strong ego under favourable circumstances. Freudian theory correctly interpreted ought to give rise to ethical theory of the type we find in Kant. This is a requirement for theories that we find in the arena of transcendental psychology.

Humans vary in many aspects of their psychology with differences routinely found in patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, setting individuals apart across time and place. Though many psychologists have attempted to account for these individual differences, one area that has continued to generate interest and disagreement is the concept of motivation. Today, understanding behavioural motivation remains one of the most important questions facing personality theorists. In an attempt to better account for human motivation, the present exploration reviews seminal theoretical positions put forward by Sigmund Freud from a Psychoanalytical perspective and contrastingly, that of Carl Rogers from the Humanistic approach. Critical consideration is specifically applied to how verifiable each perspective may be and the degree of empirical support either account has attained to date. Whilst understanding human motivation is not a new endeavour, the present exploration provides a contemporary critical assessment of traditional psychological explanations.

Rollo May’s phenomenology of love: a response to the twentieth-century cultural crisis: Love, belonging to the domain of affections, is considered in psychology along with motivation processes. The concept of will, which rarely appears in the discourse of empirical psychology, is also associated with motivation. The analysis of the phenomenon of love was one of the foundations of Sigmund Freud’s theory. In fact, Eros, entwined in the inseparable embrace of Thanatos, defined human personality along with him in psychoanalytic terms. The interaction of these two drives explained the process of directing the primary energy of life. Rollo May considered the concept of Freud as anti-voluntary, simultaneously formulating, in the spirit of existentialist thinking, an affirmative conception of will. The relationship of will and love, recognized by May, does not seem to be obvious from Freud’s psychology perspective. Identifying modern times as the times of alienation of love and domination of apathy, May proposed as a remedy for this crisis a specific dialectic of love and will. He distinguished the phenomenon of the will without love when the will inhibits love and love without a will when love undermines willpower. He perceived the proper relation of will and love as an important criterion for achieving maturity in all the basic aspects of life. In the article, I propose a critical reflection on the validity of May’s phenomenology and the placement of this theory in the context of the psychoanalytic tradition.

Opis:
This essay compares Freud’s and Heidegger’s concept of Angst. Heidegger’s and Freud’s interpretations are guided by different aims: A) in “Inhibition, Symptom and Anxiety” Freud tries to define the concept of anxiety as a main element in neurosis; B) Heidegger’s notion plays a major role in gaining the existential meaning of Dasein. Despite the differences, this essay claims that it is possible to discover a common anthropo-existential interpretation. Anxiety marks the anthropological and existential passage from the non-distinction of the pre-subjective life to the distinction that emerges from the progressive differentiation of the subject from the world. From such a distinction originates the conflict between the tendency to regain non-distinction (as a pre-birth condition) and the necessity of multiplicity. In Freud, anxiety is the price for the renunciation of indistinction; in Heidegger, anxiety is encountered when this price is recognized as unavoidable. This is the core problem that this study takes into account in order to show the existential and anthropological role of anxiety. I will proceed with an analysis of Freud’s interpretation of anxiety, and then with the Heideggerian notion. The third part points out the affinity between them. Furthermore, the paper focuses on the dis-chronic temporality that characterizes the trauma of birth. In order to show the latter, we compare the temporalities of trauma and aesthetic experience. To perform this temporal analysis, the text adopts a phenomenological viewpoint (especially from Husserl).

In 1919 Sigmund Freud raised the interest in the uncanny by claiming in his essay "Das Unheimliche" that something can be familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. Since the emergence of the concept in the 20th century, many scholars have presented their own definition of the uncanny. The concept originates from the German unheimlich but the meaning reaches far beyond its dictionary definition. As Masschelein suggests, the word itself "is untranslatable qua form and content" (Masschelein 2011, 7) and as long as the uncanny cannot be understood literally, the ambiguity of the term can lead to a multitude of interpretations. The aim of this paper is to explore how the perception of the uncanny has been changing through the years in connection with the Freudian definition. The paper offers an overview of various interpretations of the concept starting from 1906 until today. The juxtaposition of the most significant views on the uncanny shows how the concept has gradually formed a basis for various fields of study such as literature and art. The paper presents future perspectives of the uncanny where it no longer refers only to the motif of the double or supernatural elements but it also tackles the problems of body transformations and politics.

he main goal of examining a single philosophical theory, connected with social and political disciplines, is not just to identify its incoherence or to restate the theory in a more elegant way. More important in that kind of investigation is to show its possible impact on people’s lives and the functioning of communities. Thus, it seems more reasonable to conduct a critical analysis of the possible consequences for a real society than to undertake a simple study of the argument’s logical consistency. The main aim of this paper is to introduce doubts about the thesis of Chantal Mouffe presented by her in Agonistics. Thinking the World Politically and Passion and Politics. Main hypothesis is that thinking about the “political” and “politics” with reference to enmity as well as claiming that the source of every political and social activity is antagonism, can provoke an attitude that social and political scenes are battlefields rather than an agora or the space of human interactions. First of all, the author provides the critical analysis and reconstruction of the most important claims connected with the “political”, which can have strong negative effects-i.e. brutalization and creating a negative basis for social relation. Then presents a few possible sources of thinking of “political” as a “competition” or rather “enmity”. The last part it is the critic of what Mouffe claims about reason why people get involve into politics, based on the psychological experiments and in result of this the author shows the importance of validity the high standards in politics, diplomacy and relation on the social level.

The paper presents an example of school exercise based on creative use of fairy tales in order to stimulate children’s independent thinking. The aim is to use fairy tales in the teaching process as a way to develop independent thinking and creativity, both for teachers and pupils. Fairy tales, among others, the Brothers Grimm stories as well as Aesop’s and La Fontaine’s fables, were analyzed as the possible allies of one’s creativity. In the research, the children were asked to change the ending of a very famous fairy tale as a way to practice their independent thinking. The development and use of independent thinking constitute the special responsibility of teachers/adults in their relations with children.

Opis:
In Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia, Justine, the film’s depressed protagonist, eagerly awaits the world’s destruction, deeming it a fitting end for herself and the entire miserable human race. The film focuses on the anticipation of the oncoming apocalypse which, in turn, is visually and verbally expressed in beautiful terms and images, implying that, even in the end, there is beauty. “In my beginning is my end, / in my end is my beginning,” writes T.S. Eliot in Four Quartets and while Von Trier does not promise a better world emerging from the ashes of the old one, he does suggest that, regardless of the consequences, the end represents a necessity when life has turned into a senseless and tiring series of farces; the superficial actions lacking content, a phenomenon that Eliot so often sympathetically derides in his poetry. Both filmmaker and poet interweave the personal end, literal or figurative, with destruction en masse. Yet, in the film, the end is desired and, through Justine, the director suggests that such a desire may stem from a too profound love rather than the opposite. This suggestion echoes Walter Benjamin’s description of Charles Baudelaire as a modern melancholiac whose melancholy results not from a refusal of the world but a “doomed flight toward the ideal.” This counterintuitive origin of the desire for destruction and the seamless interweaving of the personal and global apocalypse in Melancholia as well as in several of Eliot’s poems will be the focus of my paper.

Opis:
This article discusses The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole as the first gothic work dramatizing, through the theme of “usurpation”, the emergence of the new but “greedy” bourgeoisie in England in the eighteenth century as a threat against the long-established, and from Walpole’s perspective, “divinely ordered” aristocratic system. Au fait with the worries and expectations of aristocracy, for he is the son of Robert Walpole (the first Prime Minister of England), and a member of nobility and the Parliament, Walpole, in his work, cannot help defending the established system against the emerging bourgeois paradigm. In the article, Walpole’s concern with the chaotic state of his country, which he reveals through building a devastating class conflict in Otranto, will be analyzed with the help of biographical, historical, and Marxist approaches. Finally, by referring to the Freudian theory of “wish-fulfillment through dreams”, Walpole’s solution for the conflict will be shown to be a self-gratifying one, satisfying the author’s aristocratic self.
