The article deals with the problem of error-oriented motivation of Turkish students during the adaptation process to a foreign university (on an example of a Ukrainian university). Research was conducted on two samples of first year students: 45 Turkish and 61 Ukrainian students. An error-oriented motivation questionnaire and survey were used to identify strategies for student response to mistakes and the main problems of adaptation. It was determined that Turkish students are more likely to use a Learning from mistakes strategy and are more exposed to such adaptation problems as communication problems with the administration, difficulties in adapting to the new social environment, and emotional problems.

Managing internationalisation in higher education is a complex process. It requires engaging all intellectual capital at the university’s disposal (intellectual capital, all university’s stakeholders, material and organisational resources). The increasing number of foreign students is the main determinant behind the need for internationalisation process management. Capable management in this area becomes a must in the face of new challenges before universities go international. Today, higher education is gaining an international character. An increasing number of young people migrates in the pursuit of new educational and professional experiences outside their home country. Foreign students constitute a valuable social capital both from the perspective of the host country as well the university in which they study. Also, the country of their destination, after they graduate, benefits a lot. Foreign exchange of students is the subject of public discourse and practice. Some important issues are indicated in this area, e.g., education co-financing for foreigners, brain drain phenomenon (loss of human capital in favour of other countries) or the human capital import (Dumitru, 2012; Straubhaar, 2000; Salt, 1997; Solimano, 2006). Managing these students, who are sometimes already employed, as well as their professional competences development, are becoming a crucial element in the internationalisation process of Polish universities. The diagnosis of possessed social capital will enable real actions in various internationalisation dimensions. The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the issues of managing intellectual capital of universities against the background of internationalisation process and its requirements. In the course of the study we used the intellectual capital concept of L. Edvinsson (1997) (theoretical dimension of the work). Due to the high growth dynamics of the number of foreign students, we focused only on this particular internationalisation area. The measurement of selected indicators of social capital of this group of students can be a source of knowledge and may inspire to take actions in the field of internationalisation process management (practical dimension).

This paper considers competences of the foreign language teacher in the Republic of Cro-atia. Despite the clear classifi cation of foreign language teacher competences on a primary level, which was developed within the TEMPUS project, no reliable instrument has yet been constructed to account for those competences. The purpose of my research was to investigate the metric characteristics of an instrument which could be useful for determining foreign language teacher competences in the Republic of Croatia. A questionnaire was applied to 126 study participants (bachelor and master English language and literature students). The fi nal version of the questionnaire consisted of eighteen items and four factors, which were extrac-ted using exploratory factor analysis. The results have shown that the developed instrument is not fully applicable to the Croatian foreign language learning context. Still, some of its aspects may be used in future instrument construction.

The European Union has achieved much in promoting cross-border access to education in the course of the last two-and-a-half decades. Free movement of students is one of EU law’s most important achievements in the general context of free movement of persons. Today, EU law confers far-reaching educational rights upon workers and their family members and it entitles all EU citizens to move to other Member States to take up studies. The right to education is one of the basic human rights, which is recognized in the Albanian legislation as well. The right to education is granted to Albanian citizens, all foreigners and stateless persons resident in the Republic of Albania alike. Albania has especially changed its legislation to improve its alignment with the standards of the EU necessary for its eventual accession. As it is known Albania has transposed all EU directives relating to immigration and asylum into its national legal system and now it participates in the negotiations on new migration and asylum rules at a regional level as well. This paper seeks to provide an overview of rules in Albania for foreign students and researchers in the Republic of Albania. It also highlights some of the challenges in the application, interpretation and development of immigration rules for students and researchers currently present in the Republic of Albania, especially the Law “On Foreigners”. The objective was to trace the main institutional and legal procedures applicable to foreign citizens who seek to study and research in Albania, to analyze the data on students and researchers in Albania and to reflect on these findings.
W ciągu ostatnich 25 lat Unia Europejska (UE) osiągnęła wiele w zakresie wspierania transgranicznego dostępu do edukacji. Swoboda przemieszczania się studentów jest jednym z najważniejszych osiągnięć prawa unijnego w ogólnym kontekście swobody przepływu osób. Obecnie UE przyznaje pracownikom i członkom ich rodzin daleko idące prawa oraz uprawnia wszystkich obywateli Unii do przenoszenia się do innych państw członkowskich w celu podjęcia nauki. Prawo do edukacji jest jednym z podstawowych praw człowieka, co również jest uznane w prawie albańskim. Podobnie prawo do edukacji w Albanii przyznane jest obywatelom Albanii, wszystkim cudzoziemcom i bezpaństwowcom. Albania zmieniła ustawodawstwo, aby poprawić swoją zgodność z unijnymi standardami koniecznymi dla akcesji. Jak wiadomo, Albania dokonała transpozycji do krajowego systemu prawnego wszystkich dyrektyw unijnych dotyczących imigracji i azylu, a także obecnie uczestniczy w negocjacjach na temat nowych przepisów migracyjnych i azylowych na poziomie regionalnym. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przegląd albańskich przepisów prawnych dotyczących studentów zagranicznych i naukowców w Republice Albanii. Wskazano również na niektóre wyzwania w zakresie stosowania, wykładni i rozwijania przepisów imigracyjnych dla studentów i badaczy, które obowiązują w Republice Albanii, zwłaszcza ustawy o cudzoziemcach. Celem było prześledzenie głównych procedur instytucjonalnych i prawnych obowiązujących zagranicznych obywateli zamierzających studiować i prowadzić badania w Albanii oraz wyciągnięcie wniosków w tej materii.

Technology is by far an inseparable tool to foreign language learning. Computer assistance language learning, (CALL) presented in the sixties was only the beginning of a new era in foreign language learning, to be ensued by information and communication technology (ICT) in the form of e-learning and the Internet in the recent decades. This paper aims at investigating how commonly is technology used in the foreign language classes in Albanian education system and what English language teachers (ELT) state about digitalisation effect in the learning environment and the students` performance according to personal experience. By using “ Eight Questions to Ask Yourself”, (Hockly N., 2011b) questionnaire adopted into test mode, comprising eight items to respond in a Likert scale, coded from 1-6, it resulted that the vast majority of ELT (91-95%) state that digitalization is time and effort effective and it facilitates the lesson presentation and is a crucial tool to enhance the foreign language environment. 42 % of ELT have a range of tools and repertoire of techniques to draw on and only 33 % design effective task types for the tool. They rely on internet application as a resource in foreign language classes. However they consider that technology is both stimulating and distracting to students, who are reportedly digital natives.

The purpose of the research is to analyze the motivation and expectations of students from Ukraine with respect to higher education (HE) in the field of tourism. A survey questionnaire was created to be used by a target group in order to obtain their views. Research has shown that the main motive (60%) for studying in Poland was the desire to study and work at the same time. In reality HE students combined degree study and work in even more cases, and 58% of the work involved the tourism industry. Almost half of the students surveyed intend to remain in Poland following graduation. Those who expressed a desire to leave for other countries most often identified Spain and Germany. At the same time, most stated that they would like to work in professions associated with tourism including work in travel agencies and hotels.

Undoubtedly, there are many factors which influence our language acquisition and have been extensively researched in order to ensure that they address the needs of different students. The elements which affect our language abilities are motivation, techniques, methods but also appropriate language strategy. For many years experts have paid attention to the plans that students use in order to achieve results in their study. In their research they have decided to reject the way of study based on particular principles or methods and they have decided to concentrate on students. Moreover, they have started to explore the nature of Language Learning Strategies and the matter how they influence receiving foreign language. The results of their investigations are considered to be the greatest causes in the process of language acquisition, by focusing on differences in language realisation.

This papers presents the results of research that was aimed at testing the performance of deaf and hard of hearing (D/HOH) high school students in learning English as a foreign language (EFL). The research examined the correlation between the age (number of years of learning EFL), the degree of hearing loss, the sex and the school success in the Serbian language with the achievements of the D/HOH students in solving an English Placement test. The differences in achievements between D/HOH students and those with a normal hearing status were also compared and analyzed. The results of the research indicate that although the D/HOH students achieve poorer results in learning English compared to students with a normal hearing status, they can be successful in learning English as a foreign language. The D/HOH students have some difficulties in learning English vocabulary and grammar. They need more time to successfully master a foreign language, so it is necessary to take into account the specificities of this category of EFL students and to adapt teaching methods and resources to suit their needs.

Theoretical background: The focus of this article is to study and compare the indicators that are implemented to evaluate the quality of the educational activities of universities in Poland, Germany and Ukraine. The investigation is exercised, in particular, by the proposed indicator of comparing the annual students’ costs during their studies for a bachelor’s degree with the average annual incomes of these services for consumers in related countries. Because of the differences in remuneration across the regions of each country, the authors used statistical data from these regions. Regarding average annual incomes, the authors used the average wage level in the provinces of Poland, the federal lands of Germany, and the regions of Ukraine.Purpose of the article: The research objective of the article is a substantiation of methodological and applied recommendations for interstate comparisons of foreign students’ expenses while studying at universities based on the experience of Poland, Germany and Ukraine. The object of this paper is the analysis of annual costs of a foreign student while studying at domestic and foreign universities.Research methods: During the research, the following methods were used: the dialectical method and methods of analysis and synthesis – to study the features of the comparison of educational activities of domestic and foreign universities, the characteristics to compare the costs of the training period within universities of different countries; statistical method – to analyse the average annual wage and the costs of international students during the training period at universities in Poland, Germany and Ukraine; structural and logical analysis – to develop theoretical and methodological principles to determine the indicator for "the ratio of the student’s annual expenses while studying at the university to the average wage in the region".Main findings: The ratio of the annual costs of students during the studying period and average annual wages allows different categories of stakeholders to determine the real level of expenses. For applicants, primarily Ukrainians, such an indicator will allow them to navigate, not only the absolute amount of annual expenses, but also the comparison of costs with the remuneration for possible part-time work that is allowed to students in Germany and Poland. Moreover, the part-time work allowed for students correlates to a certain extent with the level of average wages. For university authorities, the proposed indicator may allow a comparison of the competitiveness of their higher education institutions, taking into account the solvency of educational services users. For business circles and local governments (in the provinces of Poland, the federal lands of Germany and regions of Ukraine), this indicator can be useful in assessing the competitiveness of their territories to attract students. Student youth and local residents act as consumers of goods and services, contribute to the development of local business and, thus, can be a source of filling local budgets.

The aim of the study was to establish the level of cultural sensitivity of Polish, Ukrainian and Belarusian students, as well as characterize the differences in this respect between these groups. Cultural sensitivity is understood here as an indicator of intercultural communicative ability, which manifests itself in willingness to engage in interactions with people of different cultures. The study was conducted using a diagnostic poll with the research tool Intercultural Sensitivity Scale developed by G.M Chen and J.W. Starosta. Another methods employed included the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and LSD test. The subjects of the study were 293 students of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and Vincent Pol University in Lublin, 91 of whom were Polish, the same number of Ukrainians and 101 Belarusians. The research showed that the Ukrainian students are the most willing to engage in conversation with a person of different culture, obtaining average and high results for all factors. The lowest results, in turn, belong to the Poles, whose results were all average. Statistical analyses showed that the differences are statistically significant for 4 out of 5 examined dimensions of sensitivity. The students from Ukraine turned out to be the most diversifying group.

In the context of second language acquisition, foreign language enjoyment (FLE) is a relatively new concept. For that reason, none of the few research carried out in the field thus far has been focused on whether gender might be an important determinant of either a high or a low level of FLE. Thus, the purpose of the present paper was to examine the influence of FLE on learning English as a foreign language, as well as to investigate this relationship from the perspective of gender. The results of this study revealed that there are no statistically significant differences between males and females in FLE, while such differences are found in terms of the sources of FLE each gender perceives as the most crucial ones. It has been proved that FLE increases with the level of students’ proficiency, and a high level of FLE results in students’ greater academic achievement.

This paper examines the relationship between students’ listening comprehension skills and their opinions and interest in learning English. The participants were 514 ninth-grade students in public elementary schools in the Republic of Kosovo. A standardised listening comprehension test was used to assess students’ listening skills, followed by a questionnaire covering a range of opinions and interest in learning English. The results indicate a significant positive correlation between proficiency in English listening and factors such as interest in learning English, perception of English as a motivating skill, and lower levels of learning difficulty. In addition, favouring a dedicated language school for learning English was found to be a significant factor in English listening proficiency.

Over the last few years, the global academic community has been wondering about the possibility and efficiency of using artificial intelligence technologies in the educational process in general, and in the process of teaching foreign languages in particular. Among the theorists and practitioners in the field of education there appeared both ardent supporters of the use of these technologies, and strong opponents of this idea. Our experimental study proved the efficiency of artificial intelligence technologies in the process of the formation of foreign language communicative competence of students of non-linguistic specialties of higher educational institutions. At the same time, we emphasize that the role of the teacher in the process of organizing the educational process remains fundamental, whereas his/her additional tasks in modern conditions include a careful selection of artificial intelligence technologies, creation of a set of exercises based on their application, which should contribute to the formation of professional competencies of students.

The following paper addresses online learning in the Covid-19 pandemic and focuses on foreign language learning in the context of foreign language courses in higher education. The aim of the study is to investigate e-courses which the pandemic caused to become a substitute for face-to-face courses. Interviews were conducted with students from the University of Gdańsk and the Academy of Music in Gdańsk to find out their opinions. The research findings showed that organisation-related aspects, such as time saved, convenience or the ability to work professionally and study at the same time, were recognised as positives of online learning, while the actual educational goals, such as effectiveness, motivation and group collaboration, were seen rather as negatives of the situation. The work of teachers and their commitment were viewed positively. We did not recognise any major differences between online teaching and face-to-face interaction in this respect.
