    Investigations were carried out at timber storage sites (depots) on large-sized pine (110 pieces) and beech (130 pieces) wood from three forest districts within the territory of the Regional Directorates of the State Forests (RDSF) of Łódź, Lublin and Kraków. As a result of a comparison of both classification systems, it was proved that in the case of pine wood classified according to EU norms, the shares of the number of pieces and volume in classes B and C decreased, whereas they increased in class D when compared with Polish classification. Analogically, in the case of beech wood, a decrease in the share of the number of pieces and volume in classes A, B and D, and an increase in class C were recorded. Among the most common defects that influence the classification of both sorts of wood, open and burl knots as well as curvatures are recognised, while in the case of beech wood, shakes and galls (disease T stains) are encountered. The results of the classification determined differences in the wood value. According to the pricelists for wood standing in forest districts where the raw wood under investigation originated, it was established that the value of the pine wood classified according to the EU norm decreased by ca. 7.6% when compared with the value estimated using the Polish norm. The value of the beech wood was nearly identical in both cases, which was mainly due to the higher share of wood of class C and lower share of class D upon applying the EU standards, in comparison with the Polish classification system.

    The European Union countries are diversified in terms of the standard of living of the population. The reduction of disparities in the standard of living, along with the elimination of the negative phenomena related to social exclusion form an EU policy priority. In this context, the aim of this article is to compare the standard of living in the various European Union countries and to determine Poland’s position in the ranking. In the study, countries with a similar standard of living of their populations were grouped as well. The analysis was based on 10 variables describing the standard of living in the EU-28 countries and was conducted with the use of the development pattern method proposed by Z. Hellwig. According to the results of the research, the standard of living is the highest in Austria, Finland, Germany and Sweden, whereas it is the lowest in Spain, Malta, Croatia and Romania. Poland ranks relatively low among the European Union countries (20th place).

    The present research aims to achieve a retrospective analysis of sustainable policies for the development of beekeeping in Romania, an important sector that contributes to the development of rural areas. Romanian’s objectives regarding the development of this sector are based on the adoption of a clear vision and on the support of state, materialised by the National Beekeeping Program. The assessment of the program implementation reveals the following aspect: in the analyzed period 2008- 2010, an improvement of the access to funds can be observed, the level of absorption increasing from 16.8% in 2008 to 99.8% in 2010. The consequences following the funds accession are an increase of associative forms and a restoration of beekeeping exploitations. Nevertheless, there are still problems in the North East regions of the country, due to lack of information regarding the accession to funds. These problems could be solved by creating a platform that should constantly reunite beekeepers, researchers and specialists of the sector that share their experience and skills, establishing a dialogue between all the actors in the beekeeping chain.

    The starting point of this article is to attempt to analyze the current situation on the labor market in Europe. In order to characterize the European market the authors focused on the latest strategy called "Europe 2020" which aims to harmonize the functioning of the European market, to increase the competitiveness and productivity of the European economy by creating new jobs and higher standards of living. In the following part of the paper the authors present the new role of Polish universities. In this context, they have presented the skills and competencies of Polish graduates and university students as well as their chances of finding an interesting job in the EU.
    Punktem wyjścia niniejszego artykułu jest próba analizy obecnej sytuacji na rynku pracy w Europie. W celu scharakteryzowania rynku europejskiego autorzy skupili się na najnowszej strategii zwanej "Europa 2020", która ma na celu harmonizację funkcjonowania rynku europejskiego, w celu zwiększenia konkurencyjności i produktywności europejskiej gospodarki poprzez stworzenie nowych miejsc pracy i podniesienie standardów życia. W dalszej części artykułu autorzy przedstawiają nową rolę polskich uczelni wyższych. W tym kontekście, zaprezentowali umiejętności i kompetencje polskich absolwentów i studentów wyższych uczelni, a także ich szanse na znalezienie ciekawej pracy w UE.

    The article is devoted to the issue of changes in standard of living, which were noted in the Member States that joined the EU structures after 2004. An attempt was made to capture the impact of EU policies on the level of living standards in the Member States. The time taken in the study covers the years 2004-2014. The year of the largest enlargement in EU history was adopted as the beginning of the period. The study used taxonomic methods, in particular the Hellwig development index.
    W artykule poruszona została problematyka zmian poziomu życia w państwach członkowskich Unii Europejskiej, które przystąpiły do struktur unijnych po 2004 r. Podjęta została próba uchwycenia oddziaływania polityki UE na wyrównywanie poziomu życia w państwach członkowskich. Przyjęty w badaniu okres obejmuje lata 2004-2015. Za początek okresu badawczego przyjęty został rok 2004, ze względu na fakt, że w tym właśnie roku nastąpiło największe w historii UE rozszerzenie jej struktur. W badaniu wykorzystano metody taksonomiczne, w szczególności wskaźnik rozwoju Hellwiga jako syntetyczny miernik poziomu życia.
