Opis:
A total of 444 ecotypes Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) collected in Poland were screened for resistance to powdery mildew. A field experiment was established at Hof Steimke, DSV (Deutschen Saatveredelung), Germany. The ecotypes originated from Polish Gene Bank, IHAR – Botanical Garden, Bydgoszcz. The average powdery mildew resistance score for tested ecotypes was 4.3, and the same score for eight varieties used as a control was 4.8. From the control varieties (Limousine, Alicja, Julia, Berbie, Ottos, Jori, Eska and Oxford) the most resistant to infection was Limousine. Plants showed resistance scores 5 or 7, on average 6.17. Sixty-two ecotypes (14.0%) which were scored on average more than 6 were included in two groups: with high resistance (15 ecotypes) and with moderate resistance (47 ecotypes). Ecotypes which plants were scored on average less than 6 were included in a susceptible group (scores on average 4.0 – 5.9), and a very susceptible group (scores on average 2.0 – 3.9). There were 226 ecotypes in the susceptible group (50.9%) and 156 (35.1%) in the very susceptible group.High resistance to powdery mildew showed ecotypes collected from nine habitats: meadow, wet meadow, peat meadow, pasture, field, forest, waterside, ditch and roadside. The highest percentage of ecotypes with high resistance was collected from wet meadows. The value of these newly identified highly resistant ecotypes for control of powdery mildew on Kentucky bluegrass is discussed.

Opis:
A total of 46 barley cultivars and breeding lines (35 spring and 11 winter) tested in 1998 - 2000 Polish registration trials were tested for powdery mildew resistance with 23 differential isolates of E. graminis f. sp. hordei. The isolates were chosen according to differences in virulence spectra that were observed on \'Pallas\' isoline differential set and on 8 additional differential cultivars. The experiment was conducted in the IHAR Radzików greenhouse 1999-2000.From 35 tested spring cultivars and breeding lines 6 (17%) were composed of different lines carrying different genes for resistance. Eight different resistance alleles [Mla1, Mla7, Mla12, Mla6, Mla14, Mlg, Ml (CP) and mlo] were detected alone or in combinations. Among tested cultivars and breeding lines of spring barley, majority (94%) had combination of different genes for resistance. The most common resistance gene was Mla12 and this gene was present in 12 (34%) spring breeding lines. Seven spring cultivars and breeding lines possessed Mlo resistance.Seven different resistance alleles [Mla12, Mla6, Mla14, Mla13, Ml (Ru3), Ml (Bw), Mlra] were detected alone or in combination in tested winter cultivars and breeding lines. From 11 tested cultivars and breeding lines of winter barley 3 were composed of different lines carrying different genes for resistance. Majority (91%) of these cultivars and breeding lines had combination of different genes for resistance. Major strategies for control of powdery mildew using resistance genes are discussed.

Opis:
A collection of common wheat cullivars grown in Poland were analyzed for resistance to powdery mildew disease by using eleven differential isolates of Erysiphe graminis f. sp. tritici (Blumeria graminis). Among a total of 69 accessions, 48 cultivars possessed resistance which is attributed to known resistance genes present either individually or in a combination. Four cultivars were resistant to all the isolates used and another four cultivars revealed race-specific resistance which does not correspond to the response patterns of previously documented resistance. Resistance genes Pm2 and Pm6 in a combination were most widely distributed, and genes Pm3d, Pm4b, Pm5 and Pm8 were also postulated.
