Opis:
This paper presents a novel method of waveform generation in a single-sheet tester (SST) for measuring core losses and permeability in a steel sheet. Some improvements and modifications of the apparatus are also described. The improved way of working of a SST is important, especially in the extended range of polarization (up to 1.9 T). The system consists of hardware and software. Everything together was tested and has given good results. The proposed algorithm is described and compared to previously known methods.

Opis:
Background. Laboratory diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis is based on the detection of anti-B. burgdorferi antibodies. Mononucleosis infection can lead to false positive results in serological diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis. Materials and methods. The experimental group comprised 60 patients diagnosed with Lyme borreliosis and 106 individuals professionally exposed to tick bites, with a positive result of ELISA anti-B. burgdorferi IgM test. The control group consisted of 150 healthy individuals. Immunoassay of antibodies to the Epstein-Barr viral capside antigen (EB-VCA) in the IgM class was carried out by the means of Western blot assay. Results. In two patients diagnosed with borreliosis the presence of IgM antibodies to EB-VCA was confirmed. In the group of individuals professionally exposed to tick bites and in the control group no anti-EB-VCA IgM antibodies were found. Conclusions. Anti-EBV IgM antibodies can lead to obtaining false positive results in Lyme borreliosis diagnostics. In the cases when clinical symptoms are not characteristic for Lyme borreliosis, and are accompanied by a positive result of anti-B. burgdorferi antibodies assay only in the IgM class, one has to take into consideration the occurrence of cross-reaction in the Western blot test and carry out differential diagnosis with infectious mononucleosis.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody.

Opis:
Introduction: A 66-year-old male complained of throat discomfort and odynophagia. Laryngeal fiber optic examination was normal but narrow band imaging was suspicious. USG-FNAC from a cervical lymph node was positive for malignant metastatic carcinoma cells. CECT revealed obliteration of the left pyriform fossa till the level of cricoid cartilage, abutting the ala of the thyroid cartilage, arytenoid cartilage and prevertebral muscles. UGIE revealed an ulcerated mass lesion in the left pyriform fossa. Histopathological examination revealed stratified non-keratinized squamous epithelial lined tissue with subepithelial stroma showing large round to polygonal tumour cells. The tumour cells were surrounded by a lymphoid stroma. On immunohistochemistry the tumour cells were positive for pancytokeratin and negative for CD45, chromogranin and synaptophysin. Lymphocytes were positive for CD45. The diagnosis of lymphoepithelial carcinoma was established. The tumour was inoperable and was treated by radiotherapy. Conclusions: Lymphoepithelial carcinoma is the primary entity of the nasopharynx but rarely seen at sites like oropharynx, larynx and hypopharynx. Only around 50 non-nasopharyngeal cases have been reported till date out of which only 10–12 were in the hypopharynx. Radiotherapy is the mainstay of treatment whereas surgery can be considered for a local disease.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Biomarkers are measurable biological indicators of many disease states. Particularly noteworthy are short nucleotide sequences involved in the regulation of many cellular processes. Their level in body fluids constitutes an important biological marker of serious diseases, such as cancer or cardiovascular diseases. For example, different types of microRNA may be used as biomarker in virus-associated cancers. The aim of this article was to review the current knowledge on the miRNAs and their role in viral-related cancers (EBV and HPV). The article reviews information available in journals and on electronic databases. Brief description of the state of knowledge. A significant part of the world’s population hosts at least one of the oncoviruses, but only a small percentage of them undergo a cancerogenesis to which these infectious agents contribute. Interaction between the host cell and viral factors can lead to the origination of a microenvironment favourable to oncogenesis. Cancer arises as a result of dysregulation in many cellular processes, and particularly important are short RNA sequences which regulate the processes that can cause this disease. The varied expression of this ribonucleic acid contributes to many diseases and provides valuable information about health. Importantly, these molecules are differentially expressed in virally-induced cancer. Many publications have confirmed the relationship between the expression of specific types of miRNA and cancers associated with EBV and HPV. Conclusions. The use of miRNAs as biomarkers of neoplastic diseases associated with EBV and HPV infections may significantly contribute to the reduction of mortality caused by these viruses, and thanks to the development of modern technologies they are an attractive research object.

Opis:
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a member of the family Herpesviridae, is widely spread in the human population and has the ability to establish lifelong latent infection. In immunocompetent individuals the virus reactivation is usually harmless and unnoticeable. In immunocompromised patients productive infection or type III latency may lead to EBV-associated post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD). The aim of our research was to investigate the utility of PCR-based methods in the diagnosis and monitoring of EBV infections in bone marrow transplant recipients. Thirty-eight peripheral blood leukocyte samples obtained from 16 patients were analysed, in which EBV DNA was confirmed by PCR. We used semi-quantitative PCR to estimate the viral load and reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR) to differentiate between latent and productive EBV infection. In 14 patients we confirmed productive viral infection. We observed a correlation between higher number of EBV genome copies and the presence of transcripts specific for type III latency as well as clinical symptoms.
