    In modern times as never before, marriage and family are in danger. The contemporary problems were already present in many aspects in the times of Edith Stein. The author of the article studies the life and the works of the Saint with regard to marriage and family. For Edith Stein, marriage is an inseparable union of a man and woman, which, thanks to the sacramental grace, is filled with special strength to maintain reciprocal love and fidelity and also to cooperate with God in giving life and educating children. In Edith Stein’s opinion, both the husband and the wife in the family have rights and duties connected with being God’s image, bearing and bringing up children and transforming the world by their work. Edith, however, noted the difference between sexes and the way in which the tasks were realised according to the nature and the different callings. The Saint saw the necessity of complementarity of sexes and generations in a harmonious family. Such a vision of marriage and family is still applicable in our times.

    In the spiritual texts contained in two volumes of Geistliche Texte I and II (ESGA, Vol. 19 and 20), St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) presents the personal experience of faith in God and God, which calls man to respond to the call to live with Him in the communion of persons. Stein tries to explain the essence of deep Christianity, which she considers not only as a cultural-traditional religion, but as a daily effort to work out the time to realize the principle of unum esse cum Deo, in accordance with the chosen way of life vocation and its implementation. The answer to God’s call is imperative, it flows from the inside of man and is not imposed on him externally.

    The author of the article studies the spirituality of Edith Stein. He presents Edith Stein’s contribution to the methodology of spiritual theology, her anthropological and theological vision, her evolution of the religious experience, the life of prayer and call to mysticism. Edith Stein carried out research which today would be regarded as being interdisciplinary. Her reflections have a huge influence on the methodology of the theology of spirituality. The spirituality of the Cross which Stein writes about in compliance with the classic masters, nowadays may be an adjustment to the incarnational spirituality, in her overly optimistic view on the usage of creatures and taking for granted the spiritual value of suffering.

    The article is an attempt to analyze the manifestations of empathy in Edith Stein's scientific work and life, and it draws attention to the psychological role of empathy in the development of personality. It is worth emphasizing the importance of both the very figure of Husserl's outstanding student and the ecumenical significance of her work. The concept of "empathy" appeared in the first decades of the 20th century and the basis for the analysis of this phenomenon was philosophical (phenomenological) deliberations on the problem of cognition of other people's psychic states. One of the first psychologists to draw on the achievements of phenomenologists and apply the term Die Einfühlung was Theodor Lipps. In the Anglo-Saxon literature this term was translated as "empathy" or "sharing feelings with...". In psychotherapy today, important findings in the field of empathy were made by a Rogers and Batson, in Poland Rembowski. The article presents fragments of Edith Stein's selected writings, letters and statements, which bear testimony to her interest in the problem of empathy both in her scientific work and in her personal life. The factual material presented and its analysis is additionally based on the Personality and Axiological Model by Mróz, which focuses on the dimensions of competence, social relations and autonomy. Stein's biographical facts and statements on empathy are presented with emphasis on the relations and dependencies between the scholar's psychobiography and the dimensions of the MOA and references to the issues of ecumenism.
    Artykuł stanowi próbę analizy przejawów empatii w twórczości naukowej i życiu Edyty Stein oraz zwraca uwagę na psychologiczną rolę empatii w rozwoju osobowości. Warto podkreślić znaczenie zarówno samej postaci tej wybitnej uczennicy Husserla jak i wymowę ekumeniczną jej twórczości. Pojęcie „empatia” pojawiło się w pierwszych dekadach XX wieku, a podstawą analizy tego zjawiska były filozoficzne (fenomenologiczne) rozważania dotyczące zagadnień poznawania cudzych stanów psychicznych. Jednym z pierwszych psychologów, który czerpał z osiągnięć fenomenologów i użył terminu Die Einfühlung, był Theodor Lipps. W literaturze anglosaskiej pojęcie to tłumaczono właśnie jako „empatia” bądź „odczuwanie razem z…” Współcześnie w psychoterapii ważnych ustaleń w obszarze empatii dokonali: Rogers i Batson a w Polsce Rembowski. W artykule prezentowane są fragmenty wybranych pism, listów i wypowiedzi Edyty Stein będące świadectwem przejawianego przez nią zainteresowania zagadnieniem empatii zarówno w twórczości naukowej, jak i w życiu osobistym. Przedstawiony materiał faktograficzny oraz jego analiza opierają się dodatkowo na  Modelu Osobowościowo-Aksjologicznym MOA Mróz, koncentrującym się na wymiarach kompetencji, relacji społecznych i autonomii. Fakty biograficzne i wypowiedzi Stein dotyczące empatii przedstawiono z podkreśleniem związków i zależności występujących między psychobiografią uczonej a wymiarami MOA i odniesieniami do zagadnień ekumenizmu.

    The article explains the metaphysical, culture-making and creative act sacrificing one’s own life in the name of higher values. At the beginning we discuss the causes of a contemporary cultural crisis and the disappearance of metaphysical attitudes. We have formulated a thesis that the revival of metaphysics in contemporary culture can be grounded in the experience of metaphysical qualities that are present in heroic acts of offering one’s own life for another. The next step in our analysis was to identify the necessary and sufficient conditions for self-sacrifice, and then, on the examples of E. Stein and S. Weil, we show what the ultimate sacrifice of one’s own life is. Using the method of humanistic interpretation, we have reconstructed the descriptive and normative reasons which motivated the two women to their acts of self-sacrifice. And although Weil and Stein do not meet the criteria to be categorized as self-sacrifices, we have found that they indeed were ultimate sacrifices because they were directed towards the realization of the highest moral and religious ideals. Using the category of “metaphysical qualities” developed by the Polish phenomenologist Roman Ingarden, we proposed an interpretation in which the sacrificial act was interpreted as supererogation in which metaphysical qualities such as holiness, sublimity, etc. are phenomenologically present. Such an act also has a cultural-creative dimension, consisting in building a culture and civilization of life in which the value of the existence of another human being is a correlate of a metaphysical desire rather than biological and psychological needs. The thesis is that, contrary to the contemporary crisis in metaphysics and axiology, they are essential and irremovable elements of culture, without which it cannot grow properly.
    W artykule objaśniamy, na czym polega metafizyczny i kulturotwórczy sens aktu ofiary dokonanego z własnego życia w imię wyższych wartości. Na początku omówiliśmy przyczyny współczesnego kryzysu kultury i zaniku postaw metafizycznych. Sformułowaliśmy tezę, że odrodzenie metafizyki we współczesnej kulturze może być ugruntowane w doświadczeniu jakości metafizycznych, które uobecniają się w czynach heroicznych polegających na złożeniu ofiary z własnego życia za drugiego człowieka. Następnym krokiem w naszych analizach było określenie koniecznych i wystarczających warunków do bycia ofiarą, a dalej na przykładzie E. Stein oraz S. Weil pokazaliśmy, czym jest ofiara absolutna z własnego życia. Przy pomocy metody interpretacji humanistycznej zrekonstruowaliśmy przesłanki opisowe i normatywne, które zmotywowały owe kobiety do podjęcia czynu ofiarniczego. I choć ofiary Weil i Stein nie spełniają podanych kryteriów umożliwiających zaliczenie ich czynu do kategorii ofiary, to jednak uznaliśmy, że są to ofiary absolutne ze względu na to, że były skierowane na realizację najwyższych ideałów moralnych i religijnych. Wykorzystując opracowaną przez polskiego fenomenologa Romana Ingardena kategorię „jakości metafizycznych”, zaproponowaliśmy interpretację, w której czyn ofiarny został zinterpretowany jako czyn supererogacyjny; fenomenologicznie uobecniają się w nim jakości metafizyczne, takie jak świętość, wzniosłość itp. Taki czyn ma również wymiar kulturotwórczy, polega na budowaniu kultury i cywilizacji życia, w których wartość istnienia drugiego człowieka jest korelatem pragnienia metafizycznego, a nie potrzeb o charakterze biologicznym i psychologicznym. W artykule wykazano, że aksjologia i metafizyka mają do odegrania ważną rolę w przezwyciężeniu współczesnego kryzysu kulturowego.

    This article proposes the thesis that Edith Stein’s late anthropology has a theocentric orientation. The threefold structure of a human being consisting of a body, soul and spirit is examined in order to validate the thesis. First of all, the finitude of a human being points out to the eternal being and – consequently – human beings are not conceivable by themselves, without the context of God. Moreover, the hylomorphic union of the body and soul adopted from Aristotelian and Thomistic philosophy is enriched in Stein’s anthropology by the concept of spirit. This results in a threefold structure and is reason enough to suggest man’s iconic similarity to the Trinity. Furthermore, Stein takes over St. Teresa of Avila’s concept of an internal center of the soul, which can be a meeting point between a person and God. The analysis of the soul’s center supports the main thesis.

    The complex theological treatment of the person as imago Dei has focused on ontological, functional, relational or eschatological interpretations, which either belong or possibly belong to all human beings. It is however unusual to encounter a reflection on the person’s intrinsic uniqueness as imago Dei. For Edith Stein intrinsic or a priori individuality refers to a unique quality of the person’s soul which unfolds more or less fully in the unity of the person’s body-soul-spirit unity: «the soul is destined for eternal being, and this destination explains why the soul is called upon to be an image of God in a “wholly personal manner.”» (FEB 504 [422]) This ontological approach contributes to a consideration of interpersonal enrichment through love, as a way to personal fulfilment and to complementarity through communion. An ontological approach to personal individuality thus paradoxically leads to the discovery of the existential primacy of relationality.

    This article discusses Benedict the XVI’s charting of the formation and history of Europe around a mission to reign as a sacred duty for the sake of Human Dignity in the light of Edith Stein’s insights into the relationship between community formation and objective values. First, an account of Ratzinger’s understanding of Europe as a concept of political geography is given. Secondly is discussed the mission at the heart of the formation of Europe according to Ratzinger, and how such a mission would, according to Stein, be particularly suited for shaping a people and a continent. The third section discusses Ratzinger’s understanding of Human Dignity in the light of Stein’s understanding of values.
    W niniejszym artykule omówiono refleksje Benedykta XVI dotyczące formowania się i historii Europy w świetle powierzonego człowiekowi zadania panowania, które jest nie tylko jego świętym obowiązkiem, ale także podstawą jego godności. Analizy dokonano w świetle poglądów Edith Stein na temat związku między formacją wspólnotową a obiektywnymi wartościami. Zostały ukazane – po pierwsze – poglądy Ratzingera na temat rozumienia Europy w wymiarze polityczno-geograficznym. Po drugie – omówiono misję formowania Europy w świetle refleksji Ratzingera oraz również według sugestii Stein. Misja taka będzie szczególnie odpowiednia dla kształtowania ludzi i kontynentu. W trzeciej części omówiono rozumienie godności człowieka Ratzingera w świetle koncepcji wartości autorstwa Stein.
    Im Artikel wird eine Darstellung von Entstehung und Geschichte Europas im Zusammenhang mit dem Herrschaftsauftrag unternommen, verstanden als eine heilige Pflicht um der menschlichen Würde willen im Lichte der Ausführungen von Edith Stein über den Zusammenhang zwischen der Bildung von Gemeinschaft und objektiven Werten. Zuerst wird das Verständnis Ratzingers über Europa als ein Konzept der politischen Geographie dargelegt. Im Weiteren wird der Herrschaftsauftrag im Zentrum der Entstehung Europas gemäß den Ausführungen von Ratzinger diskutiert sowie die Frage, wie ein solcher Auftrag, nach Stein, besonders geeignet sein könnte, dem Menschen und dem Kontinent eine Gestalt zu verleihen.  Im dritten Teil wird das Ratzingersche Verständnis von der menschlichen Würde im Licht des Steinschen Verständnis der Werte dargelegt.

    Edith Stein is widely recognised as a saint, a martyr, a victim of the Holocaust and a female philosopher – but can she be a Doctor of the Church? So far, thirty-seven figures, including four women, carry the title due to their so-called ‘eminent doctrines’, eminentes doctrinae. For centuries, a procedural difficulty existed in awarding the titles to martyrs, however, in the second decade of the 21st century, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints reached a conclusion that martyrdom is not, in principle, an obstacle in awarding the title. A question, therefore, can be posed: does the legacy of someone among the Christian martyrs fulfill the criteria of the Church’s Doctorate? The aim of this article is to investigate the criteria for conferral of the title of the Doctor of the Church, prime among which is a criterion called eminens doctrina, and apply them to one example, that of Edith Stein. In doing so, I consider the question purely historically and philosophically, starting out with definitions of the Father of the Church and the Doctor of the Church in part one (available below). In the second part of the article (available in 2024), I ask what aspects of the female martyr’s theology, philosophy and spirituality fulfill the criteria of an eminent doctrine, as formulated in the Church’s documents, and which are insufficient or lacking. In order to highlight the nature of a particular criterion, I contrast Stein’s case with other recently debated cases, such as those of Irenaeus of Lyons and John Paul II.

    Should we approach the lived experience and/or understand the other with the sense of things? If this is the case, how are we to treat the human experience par excellence? Paradoxically, Edith Stein gives a fresh meaning to the Husserlian term “leiblicheSelbstgegebenheit.” In contrast to Max Scheler’s account, she develops the “persönliche Note” criterion of authenticity. And against Maetin Heidegger’s existential philosophy, a concern for human existence itself resonates. Based on these three dimensions, this article discusses the idea of “the lived experience” according to Edith Stein, that is, the human experience contemplated by the humanities.

    This article has attempted to demonstrate the practical verification of the veritative argument in the life of Edith Stein and to indicate the possibility of taking advantage of her conclusions in the construction of the argument, especially in terms of strengthening its motivational merit. That argument serves to justify the credibility of the divine and Christian revelation by demonstrating that the source of all truth is God, who is also the ultimate truth that explains the meaning of human life and all that exists. Edith Stein, while looking for the truth and meaning of life, found God, the highest Truth. Through the encounter with God she discovered her destiny, a life spent in union with Him in eternity. Her path to the truth and God bears the marks of the process of reaching the ultimate truth, the God of revelation, and this process is included in the structure of the veritative argument. In this way, the experience of Edith Stein can be considered as a practical verifi cation of that argument. In addition, in her philosophical and theological inquiry, one can fi nd the mystery of God, personal truth, essential for the recognition of God as the ultimate truth, which is vital in understanding veritative argument. The truth of God in her approach has three dimensions: personal, relational, and explanatory. Such perceived truth serves for better understanding of the meaning of human life, especially in religious dimension, which is also crucial in veritative argument. Edith Stein showed in her anthropology that man nhas an innate predisposition to seek the truth, and her knowledge had a positive eff ect on the development of man and his life, which is signifi cant in investigating the sources of the argument. Stages in the process of searching the truth, distinguished by Edith Stein, (the attitude of intellectual openness to reality, good will in the quest to uncover the truth, determination and consistency in seeking, the attitude of „empathy”, humility opening up to the transcendent) converge with internal symptoms: dependency on eff ectiveness of the argument, or on its motivational value, enriching and expanding the argument. Similarly, external conditions which had a positive impact on the process (living environment and education, Husserl’s phenomenological method, testimony Christians’ life in faith) correspond to and reinforce the subject (objective) circumstances of the eff ectiveness of the argument.
    W artykule podjęta została próba wykazania praktycznej weryfikacji argumentu werytatywnego w życiu Edyty Stein oraz wskazania na możliwość zastosowania jej przemyśleń w konstruowaniu tegoż argumentu, zwłaszcza w aspekcie wzmocnienia jego waloru motywacyjnego. Argument werytatywny służy uzasadnianiu wiarygodności Objawienia Bożego i chrześcijańskiego poprzez wykazywanie, że źródłem wszelkiej prawdy jest Bóg, który jest też ostateczną Prawdą wyjaśniającą sens życia człowieka i wszystkiego co istnieje. Edyta Stein szukając w swym życiu prawdy i sensu życia odnalazła Boga, najwyższą Prawdę. Przez spotkanie z Bogiem odkryła swe przeznaczenie, życie w zjednoczeniu z Nim w wieczności. Jej droga do prawdy i Boga nosi znamiona procesu dochodzenia do ostatecznej Prawdy, Boga Objawienia, a proces ten zawiera się w strukturze argumentu werytatywnego. W ten sposób doświadczenie Edyty Stein może być potraktowane jako praktyczne zweryfikowanie tegoż argumentu. Dodatkowo w jej myśli filozoficzno-teologicznej można odnaleźć dociekania tajemnicy Boga, osobowej Prawdy, istotne dla ujęcia Boga, jako ostatecznej Prawdy, a właśnie argument zmierza do wykazywania, że prawda zawiera się w Bogu Objawienia. Prawda w Bogu w jej ujęciu ma wymiar: osobowy, relacyjny i wyjaśniający. Tak postrzegana prawda służy pełniejszemu odkryciu sensu życia człowieka, przede wszystkim w wymiarze religijnym, co również przynależy do istoty argumentu. Edyta Stein wykazuje w swej antropologii, że człowiek ma wrodzone predyspozycje do poszukiwania prawdy, a jej poznanie wpływa pozytywnie na rozwój człowieka i jego życie. Te stwierdzenia są znaczące dla problematyki źródeł argumentu. Wyróżnione w myśli Edyty Stein uwarunkowania procesu dochodzenia do Prawdy i Boga (postawa otwartości intelektualnej względem zastanej rzeczywistości, dobra wola w dążeniu do odkrycia prawdy, determinacja i konsekwencja poszukującego, postawa „wczucia”, pokora otwierająca na rzeczywistość transcendentną) zbiegają się z wewnętrznymi, podmiotowymi uzależnieniami skuteczności czy waloru motywacyjnego argumentu i w jakimś stopniu je ubogacają oraz poszerzają. Podobnie uwarunkowania zewnętrzne, które wpłynęły pozytywnie na ten proces (środowisko życia i wychowanie, metoda fenomenologiczna Husserla, świadectwo życia wiarą spotykanych chrześcijan) korespondują i wzmacniają przedmiotowe (obiektywne) okoliczności skuteczności argumentu.

    The term feminine genius denotes a special intuition and sensitivity of a woman that helps her not only ascertain the needs of others but also empathize with the human condition in a way characteristic only of women. The article attempts to answer questions concerning the feminine genius, such as the following: What is spiritual motherhood? What is spiritual companionship? How can women express the qualities of companionship and motherhood in and out of their homes? What kind of obstacles do women need to root out of their hearts to build loving relationships? And, How does emotional formation prepare women for their vocation? The answers are sought from Edith Stein’s perspective, i.e. by drawing from the usage of phenomenology and Thomism adopted in her book, Essays on Women.
