Opis:
Research background: Sustainable development is the agenda for many countries including Ukraine, which adopted it at the national level and promoted through its regions. As the country is constantly struggling with the results of the military conflict and the impact of the occupation of its part by separatists, which led to economic decrease and emergence of numerous social and environmental issues, the transition of Ukraine to sustainable development path becomes especially important. At the same time, there is no official methodology adopted by the Ukrainian government, how to assess sustainable development of its regions. Availability of objective assessments would contribute to development of the relevant policy recommendations. Purpose of the article: The purpose of the article is to assess sustainable development of the regions in Ukraine and to show the dynamics of performance of the regions before and after the beginning of the military conflict in the East of Ukraine. Methods: We suggest the methodology of calculation of the integral index of sustainable development of the regions in Ukraine. This methodology takes into account the three pillars of sustainable development concept (economic, social and environmental) and uses the data available for all Ukrainian regions from the official statistics source. In order to determine the position of individual regions in the development of the Ukrainian economy and to identify certain groups of regions according to their level of sustainable development, we apply the method of statistical grouping. Findings & Value added: The conducted analyses showed the dynamics of indicators of sustainable development of the Ukrainian regions, the performance of the regions and their affiliation to the corresponding attributive groups. The situation and interrelation of the regions in Ukraine totally changed after the beginning of the military conflict in the East of Ukraine. The Luhansk and Donetsk regions, which are directly affected by the military conflict, became the outsiders among other regions in Ukraine, though before the conflict the values of sustainable development indicators had been above the average values in Ukraine. The leaders among the regions also changed, and the difference between the leaders and the following groups became significant. The results of the analyses allowed to visualize the dynamics of sustainable development of the regions in Ukraine and define the key directions for future development.

Opis:
The article aims to reveal the essence of the reintegration process of the occupied and de-occupied territories, determining the current state and characterizing the conict in the East of Ukraine. Its components and implementation tools are analyzed, and foreign models of reintegration of the occupied and de-occupied territories are presented and evaluated; there is also determined the degree of their conformity for Ukraine. In this research, there was made an attempt to nd the most eective model for the reintegration of Donbas, which would not only contribute to the demilitarization and restoration of state control in these territories, but also prevent the emergence of separatist movements, stimulate the process of returning, and integration of citizens to the social, cultural, economic and political life of their country of origin. It was stressed that the Ukrainian model for restoring the territorial integrity and reintegration of Donbas should be based on compromise and key issues that have a positive international grounding for which the government has a public support, combined with a strong national, international, and military one. There is a greater chance for working out a mutual standpoint of Ukraine and its international partners which would allow the conict with Russia to be solved. It is noted that the problem remains since there is no consensus among citizens on the optimal way of restoring the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Russia’s attack on Ukraine has had huge and destructive consequences for Iran. The war began when the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the Western countries for the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action ( JCPOA) were in a promising state and the parties were in the final stages. This paper seeks to examine the effects of this war on Iran’s foreign policy by considering securitization and desecuritization. Considering this, the paper concludes that Iran has faced the direct consequences of the war in its domestic and foreign policies. At the foreign policy level, Iran has faced a decrease in international prestige due to its proximity to Russia, the use Iranian drones by Russia on the battlefield and the ‘death’ of the JCPOA. As the West securitized the issue of Iran, Iranian authorities desecuritized Iran’s relations with Arab countries, while securitized relations with the Caucasus.

Opis:
The dominant view towards the Middle East is that the region is stuck in the past and plagued by conflict. Therefore, it was anticipated that Middle Eastern states would take a side in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Despite expressing sympathy for Ukrainians due to their own experiences of humiliation caused by several wars, the Middle Eastern people and states remained cautious and chose to avoid getting involved in the conflict. It seems that the view of the Middle Eastern middle class had an influence on state decision-making regarding involvement in the war in Ukraine. Considering the rise of an educated middle class in the region, it can be hypothesized that the middle class’s priority is political-economic instability rather than engaging in further wars. The objective of this research is to comprehensively understand the Middle Eastern middle class’s viewpoint on war.

Opis:
The present article is concerned with the Russian narrative of the Ukraine war in Arabic versions of Sputnik and Russia Today Arabic (RT Arabic). The tragic war in Ukraine has affected different media sources in the world, including Russian and pro-Russian media. However, Sputnik and RT Arabic’s media reports combine the Ukraine conflict with Arabic context addressed to different audiences in the Arab world. This study also argues that the Russian narrative relies on propaganda devices such as ad hominem, card stacking and agenda setting, as well as testimonial and glittering generalities. These techniques affect the audience and enable to express Kremlin’s political objectives on the Ukraine war and foreign policy. Moreover, the research demonstrates that the media coverage released by RT Arabic and Sputnik aims at creation of two opposite images, which blame the West and endorse Russian policy.

Opis:
The article deals with distinctive statements released by certain Arab states, including responses of political leaders or parties operating in the MENA region. These statements differ from neutral positions that dominated in the Arab world. The research argues that the narrative of the statements reflect emotional and explicit reactions to the ongoing situation in Ukraine from local perspectives, as in the case of Lebanon or Syria. However, the study also argues that claims declared by opposition leaders and political factions in Lebanon, Libya or Sudan contradict the official statements released by authorities of these countries. In addition, the analysis is confronted with inexplicit claims of the Gulf countries which demonstrate differences in the narrative of the Ukraine war. Moreover, the article reflects various contexts and complex social, political and economic conditions that affect the statements. However, the research also demonstrates the importance of stylistic features applied in the statements. Thus, particular words and phrases in Arabic reinforce the messages and express certain stands of local authorities and political leaders towards the Ukraine war and geopolitical tensions.
Poszczególne słowa i wyrażenia w języku arabskim wzmacniają przekaz i wyrażają określone stanowisko przywódców politycznych wobec wojny w Ukrainie.

The crisis in eastern Ukraine and Crimea is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges of security currently facing the international community. In pursuing its objectives, the state is often guided by different motives, but the common denominator change in the approach to cooperation with Russia is now Ukraine. The author analyses the changing geostrategic situation surrounding Russia, which is the result of its involvement in the Ukrainian crisis. This has also been analysed by countries like China, Japan, India, Turkey and Middle East countries.

Opis:
According to common interpretations, two narrow crustal blocks are supposed to occur on the south-western edge or in the foreland of the East European Craton. The first one, bounded on the NE by the Nowe Miasto-Radom-Rava Ruska fault system, and on the SW by the Holy Cross Fault, stretches NW-SE from the Łysogóry-Radom region in Poland to the Rava Ruska Zone in Ukraine. The second one, bounded on the NE by the Holy Cross Fault, and from the SW by the Chmielnik-Ryszkowa Wola–Krakovets fault zone, is thought to tie together the Kielce area of the Holy Cross region with the Kokhanivka Zone in Ukraine. Both these blocks may have formed in connection with the development of regional listric faults during Precambrian asymmetric stretching of the Baltica continent, and were part of the marginal zone of the East European Craton. The sedimentary development of the blocks can be comparable to the Blake Plateau off the Florida coast. Both the Paleozoic sections and tectonic deformation styles in the Polish and Ukrainian segments of these blocks are different. Paleozoic tectonic structures of the Holy Cross region have a southern vergence, while the Paleozoic rocks of the Rava Ruska and Kokhanivka regions in western Ukraine are thrust towards the NE. This demonstrates the different tectonic evolution of the Paleozoic succession between the Holy Cross region and western Ukraine, and makes questionable the genetic relationships between these two regions. In this situation, the tectonic blocks of the foreland should be considered heterogeneous. Structural-facies evidence suggests that the SW boundary of the East European Craton should be moved at least to the Chmielnik–Ryszkowa Wola-Krakovets fault.

Opis:
In south-eastern Poland and western Ukraine, the Outer Carpathian orogen and the Carpathian Foredeep developed in the foreland of the East-European Platform (Baltica). The area consists of a number of tectonic units included in the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ): the Łysogóry–Radom and Małopolska blocks in the territory of Poland, and the Rava Rus’ka Zone, Kokhanivka Zone and Leżajsk Massif in the Ukraine. The development of the TESZ began in the (?Middle) Late Neoproterozoic and was associated with rifting processes taking place along the western edge of the East-European Craton (Baltica) during the break-up of the Rodinia/ Pannotia supercontinent. The passive margin of Baltica evolved into the TESZ during collisional and/or strike-slip movements. In the TESZ (Małopolska Block and Leżajsk Massif), Ediacaran flysch-type siliciclastics were affected by weak metamorphism and folding during the Cadomian orogeny. The development of Cambrian deposits in the East-European Craton, Łysogóry–Radom Block, northeastern part of the Małopolska Block (Kielce Fold Belt) and in the Rava Rus’ka and Kokhanivka zones was associated with the post-rift thermal subsidence. Tectonic movements (so-called Sandomierz phase), which occurred probably due to an oblique collision of the Małopolska Block (included into the passive margin of Baltica) and the East-European Craton during late Middle Cambrian to Late Cambrian (possibly also Early Ordovician) times, resulted in the following: (1) development of stratigraphical (?erosional) gaps in the Middle and Upper Cambrian sections of the Lublin–Podlasie slope of the East-European Craton and the Kielce Fold Belt in the Małopolska Block; (2) intense tectonic subsidence of the Łysogóry–Radom Block during the deposition of Middle and Upper Cambrian sediments; (3) development of compressional folds in the Lower Cambrian to lower Middle Cambrian deposits of the Kielce Fold Belt on the Małopolska Block. Ordovician–Silurian series were deposited in a typical flexural foredeep basin, in which subsidence and deposition rates accelerated during Late Silurian (Ludlow–Pridoli) and Early Devonian (Lochkovian) times. It is postulated that the present position of the Małopolska Block relative to the Łysogóry–Radom Block and East-European Craton resulted from post-Silurian dextral movements between the Małopolska Block and the East-European Craton. Devonian–Carboniferous deposits occur only in the Małopolska Block located in the Variscan foreland. The Middle-Late Devonian and Early Carboniferous shallow-marine carbonate platforms developed under an extensional regime. The siliciclastic Upper Visean–Lower Namurian A Culm series were deposited in the flexural Variscan foreland basin. During the Late Namurian A, the Małopolska Block was uplifted in response to the build-up of compressional foreland stresses. During post-Carboniferous times, the Precambrian and Palaeozoic deposits were subject to erosion and restructuring during the Alpine orogeny.
