Opis:
This article shows how dumping of sediments from an amber mining plant prevented erosion of the western shore of the Sambian Peninsula (in Kaliningrad Oblast). The average annual dynamics of coastal areas in the vicinity of the former dumping site of the amber mining plant is described. Nowadays the erosion is continuing after cessation of dumping. The rate of erosion was estimated by results of regular monitoring measurements, using airborne laser scanning. It was found that about 250000 cubic metres per year of local material is needed every year to prevent further erosion and retreat of the shore.

Although textile craft is a socially complex and economically significant phenomenon, little is known about textile techniques in the Bronze Age of the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, including Estonia. No textile or cloth remains dated to the Bronze Age, i.e. between 1800 and 500 BC in the Estonian context, have been found so far. Only indirect evidence such as possible textile tools and impressions on pottery can be used in the study of textile-making. The aim of the present study is to review the available evidence regarding Bronze Age pottery with patterns commonly described as made with textiles, and to systematise it. As a result, it is suggested that the evidence based on these impressions is even more limited than thought so far. Few finds clearly indicate the use of textiles. Regular patterns consisting of variously-shaped concavities on the vessels’ walls may have been made also with other items, for example by rolling fir cones over the surface of a freshly-modelled pot.

The Lower Ordovician conodont Scolopodus striatus Pander, 1856 (= Scolopodus rex Lindström, 1955) has an apparatus composed of five element morphotypes: acontiodiform, subrounded, compressed paltodiform, paltodiform, and scandodiform. The identification of the morphotypes is based on the general asymmetry of elements and shape of their bases. The elements are variable within each morphological group and form a continuous transition series generally reflected in differences in the depth of the basal cavity, height and degree of lateral compression of the base. The new collection from the localities near St. Petersburg, the type area of the first investigations on conodonts by Christian Pander in 1856, was examined and species of Scolopodus named by him are revised. All Pander’s species with the exception of the type species Scolopodus sublaevis are identified as a single species of Scolopodus that was named 99 years later as Scolopodus rex. The S. sublaevis sensu formae was not recognised in collections studied and its validity is questionable. S. striatus is the most easily recognisable among Pander’s species of Scolopodus and is here proposed to be a senior synonym of S. rex.

Based on structural maps, the bedrock structure on the southern slope of the Baltic Shield is analysed. Gently southerly dipping (0.1–0.2°) Paleozoic layers from Estonia to the Swedish east coast form the Baltic Homocline (BH). Numerous monoclinal folds, forced by basement faulting, induce slight variations in bedrock attitude across the BH. Studies on faults exposed in Southern Finland suggest that many monoclinal folds inducing basement faults within the BH are of Precambrian origin and have been active in pulses. The present monoclines were shaped by the Caledonian Orogeny. Submeridional tectonic hinge-lines induce minor regional-scale changes in the structural setting and control trends/styles of the forced folds. From the west, the BH bounds with the Baltic–Bothnian mobile zone that has been intermittently active since Mesoproterozoic times. The evolving Baltic Syneclise in the Silurian rearranged the structural setting typical for the Ordovician Baltic Basin. The Cenozoic uplift of Scandinavia created a SE-to-E-dipping bedrock sequence around the Gotland–Öland area. As the latter area had a different attitude than the BH, two Cenozoic cuesta-sets started to evolve around the northern Baltic Proper. They both had an outlet to the N–S-flowing Eridanos River around the Gotska Sandön area, creating thus two independent sections of the Baltic Klint.

The aim of this study is to construct a seismo-geological model of the western part of the Baltic Syneclise. This model enables reconstruction of the tectonic processes taking place in this area, which had a significant impact on the formation of prospective zones for the occurrence of unconventional hydrocarbon accumulations. The two seismic surveys Opalino 3D and Kościerzyna-Gdańsk 2D, together with borehole data available in the vicinity, were used for the research. Well data were used not only for the seismic-to-well tie, but also for the construction of well cross-sections (including balanced ones). The structural interpretation of seismic boundaries enabled the separation of four structural stages: Precambrian; Caledonian, Permian-Mesozoic and Cenozoic. The seismic interpretation of the Opalino 3D survey indicates the presence of block-style tectonics in this area. This system is considered to be a part of a large block system, also extending throughout the area of the 2D survey. The Caledonian interval shows the greatest degree of structural complexity. Most of the large Palaeozoic dislocations already had been formed in the Cambrian. They underwent reactivation and/or inversion in the Silurian, or in the final stages of the Caledonian and/or Variscan Orogeny, at the latest. The current shape and structure of the Baltic Syneclise and the development of the Palaeozoic sedimentary cover were significantly influenced by the processes taking place in the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone (TTZ). The dislocations of the Lower Palaeozoic stage are characterized by general NW-SE and NE-SW trends, although the first of these seems to be dominant.

The present-day structural pattern of the Baltic Depression developed due to superimposition of three main deformation phases: syn-Caledonian (after the Silurian), syn-Variscan (at the end of Carboniferous and beginning of Permian) and syn-Alpine (latest Mesozoic or earliest Cenozoic). The major restructuring of the area occurred as a result of syn-Variscan deformation that took place in latest Carboniferous and earliest Permian times. Most of the faults developed or became reactivated probably at that time. Syn-Alpine deformation manifested itself relatively weakly, mainly by reactivation of some pre-existing faults.

Based on drillings, a number of geological cross-sections, and structure contour and isopach maps were composed to describe/analyse the structure and development of the Valmiera-Lokno Uplift (VLU), a basement block elevated up to 700 m with a heavily deformed and eroded platform cover in the East European Craton interior, along the regional Liepaja-Riga-Pskov Fault Zone (LRPFZ). Five isolated basement-cored anticlines (BCA), the Lokno, Haanja, Mõniste, Valmiera and Smiltene uplifts, arise in the platform cover on the VLU, whereas the downthrown LRPFZ side defines a complex monoclinal fold. The anticlines, straddling or occurring near the monocline, merge with it and thus have highly asymmetrical shapes. Thickness changes of stratigraphic units across the VLU reveal its complex history, reflecting regional tectonic activation pulses that varied noticeably even between neighbouring BCAs. In all, the latest Precambrian-earliest Ordovician initiation epoch of the VLU was followed by modest tectonic activity or a standstill period in the Middle Ordovician-Early Silurian. Intensifying tectonic movements culminated again in the prime of the Caledonian Orogeny in latest Silurian-earliest Devonian time, and faded thereafter towards the end of Early Devonian. The VLU has been reactivated occasionally since the latest Devonian and emerges as a crustal weakness in the recent movement and seismicity patterns. To decipher the origin of the VLU, hitherto factually undiscussed topics, a more detailed study of the LRPFZ, analysis of its fault pattern and kinematics alongside the regional tectonic setting/history is needed. A cursory look hints to a substantial Early Paleozoic sinistral strike-slip along the LRPFZ, allowing interpreting the VLU as a possible restraining bend structure.
