    The aim of the article is to present modern readership habits and the impact of new technologies developmenton them. Those technologies and social changes can also pose a danger or provide support for the development ofreadership; however, the point is how to skilfully make use of them.Readership plays a significant role in modern societies. It is considered not only a socio-cultural tool giving peopleequal chances in life and facilitating dialogue between different cultures, but also an important economic development factor. Nevertheless, the level of readership keeps successively decreasing in developed countries. Poland is not an exception – on the contrary, the level of readership is decreasing faster than in other developed countries.This article is an outline of opportunities and barriers as well of new technologies affecting readership. The relationsbetween those opportunities or barriers and the level of readership are also discussed. The article includesa range of examples of positive solutions from abroad, suitable for introduction in Poland.

    The present paper seeks to explain the diverse advantages of virtual books and also the main barriers that make it difficult their implementation in the classroom. A brief review of the literature on ICT, e-learning, distance education and e-books will be complemented with a case study about the preparation, development and implementation of an e-book. The paper could be helpful both for systems analysts and for teachers when they are developing and implementing e-books.

    Opis:
    The academia of the University of Mysore in India encompasses faculty and research scholars. Both are involved in research, publication and lifelong learning, and faculty members are deeply engaged in assisting students. Besides the print collection, the library users have access to a variety of electronic resources. In the recent past, the librarians have been encouraging a more effective use of e-books, which are web based and downloadable. The library’s collection of electronic books is growing. It is said that ‘the most important development in literature in the world after Guttenberg is the e-book’ [6]. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the usage of e-resources at the University of Mysore. The paper covers demographic characteristics, computer and Internet usage, types of e-books accessed, the purpose of search, and duration of e-books use. E-books provide easy and instant access to the content and are convenient to read and browse. The findings of the survey reveal that the e-books of Springer, Taylor & Francis were used the most. Reference e-books were used very frequently. A lack of awareness together with acquisition costs seem to hinder usage of e-books.
    Środowisko akademickie Uniwersytetu of Mysore w Indiach obejmuje wykładowców i uczonych badaczy. Oba środowiska prowadzą badania, wydają publikacje i organizują kształcenie ustawiczne, a pracownicy wydziału są głęboko zaangażowani w pomoc studentom. Oprócz zbiorów dokumentów drukowanych, użytkownicy biblioteki mają dostęp do różnych zasobów elektronicznych. W niedawnej przeszłości bibliotekarze zostali zachęceni do bardziej efektywnego wykorzystania e-książek, które są do pobrania dzięki sieci internetowej. Biblioteczne kolekcje książek elektronicznych powiększają się. Mówi się, że „najważniejszym wydarzeniem w rozwoju literatury na świecie po wynalazku Guttenberga jest e-book” [6]. Celem niniejszego badania była ocena wykorzystania e-źródeł na Uniwersytecie w Mysore. W artykule przedstawiono charakterystykę demograficzną, wykorzystanie komputera i Internetu, dostępne rodzaje e-booków oraz cel i okres użytkowania e-książek. E-książki zapewniają łatwy i szybki dostęp do ich zawartości. Wyniki badań wykazują, że bardzo często użytkowane były e-książki wydawnictwa Springer, Taylor & Francis. Często wykorzystywano także źródła informacji o e-bookach. Brak świadomości wraz z kosztami akwizycji zdają się utrudniać korzystanie z e-książek.

    Is reading facing a crisis nowadays and is the reader an endangered species? Does the development of modern information technologies cause a decline of reading? The objective of the paper is to present the relationship between the book and the reader, the issues concerning contemporary reading, and consequently, reading culture, and the place of the reader and the book in the information society. The process of becoming a reader begins already in childhood, with one’s reading interests and habits changing in the process of psychophysical and psychosocial maturing. They normalize only in adult life. The paper also utilizes the National Library’s reports on the state of readership and on the development of the e-book market in Poland. The dynamic development of digital technologies, the electronic form of publication, and the appearance of newer and newer interfaces of e-book platforms have increased the mobility of literature in the world. In the 21st century, reading is experiencing its ups and downs; nevertheless, it has not been deprived of its significance in culture. The development of new technologies cannot negatively impact reading: conversely, this development has become a carrier of reading culture and the medium that promotes this readership.
    Czy współczesne czytelnictwo przeżywa kryzys, a czytelnik jest „gatunkiem” zagrożonym? Czy rozwój nowoczesnych technologii informatycznych powoduje spadek czytelnictwa? Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie relacji między książką a czytelnikiem, zagadnień dotyczących współczesnego czytelnictwa, a co za tym idzie kultury czytelniczej, oraz miejsca odbiorcy literatury i książki w społeczeństwie informacyjnym. Proces stawania się czytelnikiem rozpoczyna się już w dzieciństwie, a zainteresowania i nawyki czytelnicze zmieniają się wraz z dojrzewaniem psychofizycznym i psychospołecznym. Normalizują się dopiero w dorosłym życiu. W artykule wykorzystano raporty Biblioteki Narodowej dotyczące stanu czytelnictwa oraz rozwoju rynku e-booków w Polsce. Dynamiczny rozwój technologii cyfrowych, elektroniczna forma publikacji i nowe interfejsy platform do korzystania z e-booków zwiększyły mobilność w świecie literatury. W XXI wieku czytelnictwo przeżywa wzloty i upadki, jednak nie zostało pozbawione kulturowego znaczenia. Rozwój technologii nie jest w stanie zaszkodzić czytelnictwu, wręcz przeciwnie – stały się one nośnikiem kultury czytelniczej oraz medium, które je promuje.

    The article presents selected issues related to the antiquarian book market in Poland during the pandemic. The first part shows the increased interest in three titles of world prose with epidemic themes (A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe, The Plague by Albert Camus, and Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez). Demand for these titles increased significantly, as did their prices, although these depended on market opportunities. However, interest in these titles waned over time. However, the changes in the antiquarian auction market, which had already moved entirely online as a result of the pandemic, proved to be permanent. Meanwhile, the Internet has allowed new sellers and buyers to enter the market, although the top position of the industry has not changed.
    W artykule przedstawiono wybrane zagadnienia związane z rynkiem książki antykwarycznej w Polsce w okresie pandemii. Pierwsza część pokazuje wzrost zainteresowania trzema tytułami prozy światowej o tematyce epidemicznej (Dziennik roku zarazy Daniela Defoe, Dżuma Alberta Camusa i Miłość w czasach zarazy Gabriela Garcíi Márqueza). Popyt na nie wyraźnie wzrósł wraz z ich cenami, choć te zależały od możliwości rynkowych. Zainteresowanie tymi tytułami z czasem jednak spadło. Trwałe okazały się natomiast zmiany na rynku aukcji antykwarycznych, który w wyniku pandemii przeniósł się całkowicie do internetu. W tym czasie Internet pozwolił nowym sprzedawcom i kupującym zdobyć przyczółek na rynku, choć czołówka branży nie uległa zmianie.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest identyfikacja wyzwań związanych z cyfryzacją i jednolitym rynkiem cyfrowym dla rynków książek w Europie. Pytania badawcze są związane z charakterem tych wyzwań i wpływem na europejskie rynki książki z jednej strony tych wyzwań, a z drugiej działań instytucji unijnych. Prowadzi to do hipotezy, że rynki książki w Europie stoją przed wyzwaniami związanymi z cyfryzacją o charakterze technologicznym, ekonomicznym, prawnym, politycznym i sądowniczym. W związku z tym kluczową metodą badawczą będzie analiza tych wyzwań i działań podejmowanych przez instytucje UE. Rynek książki w Europie charakteryzuje się zróżnicowaniem i fragmentacją w porównaniu z np. rynkiem amerykańskim i wobec rozwoju rynków książki w tzw. gospodarkach wschodzących traci udział w światowym rynku książki. W ciągu ostatniej dekady kurczył się w latach 2008–2013, żeby odnotować odbicie po 2014 r. Na jego tle polski rynek książki sukcesywnie maleje. Rynek e‑booków, dynamiczny rozwijający się w latach 2009–2014 (często kosztem książek papierowych), osiągnął poziom ok. 6–7% całego rynku książki w Europie. Wobec postępujących procesów cyfryzacji Unia Europejska przystąpiła do realizacji Strategii Jednolitego Rynku Cyfrowego, który wpływa również na europejski rynek książki poprzez przyjmowane w jego ramach dyrektywy i rozporządzenia wspólnotowe. Kształtują one europejskie prawo autorskie, które wprowadzając wyjątki i ograniczenia, implementowane w różnym stopniu w poszczególnych krajach członkowskich, oddziaływają na modele biznesowe europejskich wydawców. Dodatkowo na działalność autorów i wydawców wpływ ma orzecznictwo Trybunału Sprawiedliwości Unii Europejskiej. W związku z tym instytucje unijne, poprzez dyrektywę w sprawie praw autorskich na jednolitym rynku cyfrowym, starają się stworzyć odpowiednie ramy prawne dla utworów niedostępnych w obrocie handlowym czy potwierdzające prawo do godziwej rekompensaty za dozwolony użytek prywatny wydawców. Oddzielną kwestią pozostaje tzw. e‑lending związany z możliwością wypożyczania książek elektronicznych. Rozwój rynku publikacji elektronicznych ograniczał brak możliwości stosowania preferencyjnych stawek VAT, co zostało ostatecznie rozwiązane przez Parlament Europejski i Radę w latach 2017–2018. Instytucje europejskie wywierają wpływ na rynek książki w Europie, gdzie ostatnio Komisja Europejska stara się rozwiązać problemy wynikłe z interpretacji dotychczasowych dyrektyw przez Trybunał Sprawiedliwości UE.
    The aim of this article is to identify the challenges created by digitalization and the Digital Single Market for book markets in Europe. The research questions are, on the one hand, related to the nature of these challenges and the impact they have on European book markets, and on the other hand, the impact of the activities of EU institutions. This leads to the hypothesis that the digitization challenges that the book markets in Europe are facing are of a technological, economic, legal, political and judicial nature. Therefore, the key research method will be an analysis of these challenges and the (re)actions (under)taken by EU institutions. The book market in Europe is characterized by diversity and fragmentation in comparison with, for example, the American market, and is losing its share in the global book market with the development of book markets in emerging markets. Over the last decade, it shrank between 2008 and 2013 and started to rise again after 2014. In contrast to the European book market, the Polish book market is gradually decreasing. The e‑book market, which developed dynamically between 2009 and 2014 (often at the expense of paper books), reached the level of about 6–7% of the entire book market in Europe. To meet the challenges of the ongoing digitization, the European Union has started to implement the Digital Single Market Strategy, which also affects the European book market through the directives and regulations adopted as part of the Strategy. European copyright law, by introducing exceptions and limitations, implemented to varying degrees in individual member states, affects the business models of European publishers. In addition, the activities of authors and publishers is influenced by the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). Therefore, EU institutions, through the directive on copyright in the Digital Single Market, are trying to create an appropriate legal framework for out‑of‑commerce works or confirm the right to fair compensation for publishers. A separate issue remains e‑lending, which is related to the possibility of borrowing e‑books. The development of the e‑book market was limited by different VAT rates of print and digital books, which was finally resolved by the European Parliament and the Council in 2017–2018. European institutions have an impact on the book market in Europe, where the European Commission has recently been trying to solve problems resulting from the interpretation of existing directives by the CJEU.
