Opis:
Modernization of aged rolling stock is one of the possibilities to adapt it to the current requirements for better environmental friendliness and economy of railway transport. However, some vehicle upgrades lead to new failures that were not observed in the original vehicles. The cause is the so-called “hybrid design”, built on a combination of original and selected new components. The aim of the work was to improve the situation with frequent failures and unavailability that occur on the modernized locomotive where a new diesel engine and new electronic control system was installed. Within the work, a simplified methodology for evaluating the outputs of diagnostic equipment was developped based on and applied to specific locomotive type and its diesel engine. The methodology resulted in a significant reduction of the time for assessing the condition of the vehicle’s diesel engine and more effective maintenance. The paper also presents other possibilities in the analysis of big data in the maintenance of rolling stock e.g. using fuzzy logic.

Opis:
The internal combustion engine plays a vital role in transportation, industry, and shipping. However, diesel as one of the main fuels for internal combustion engines, caused many environmental and human health problems. In order to solve the problems, more researchers have been committed to the research of alternative fuels. Biodiesel is a renewable, sustainable alternative fuel, and its characteristics are similar to traditional diesel. It can be mixed with pure diesel. It has been found that a mix with pure diesel in a certain ratio can effectively reduce the negative effects caused by its characteristics, improve the combustion performance, and reduce the NOx and PM emissions. This article mainly reviews the effects of the mixture of biodiesel and diesel on engine combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions, including three parts: part (1) summarizes and analyzes the biodiesel’s production and characteristics, part (2) analyzes the engine’s performance under different working conditions, and part (3) studies and analyzes the exhaust emission under different working conditions.

Opis:
Engine system is a prone-fault part in diesel locomotive and its malfunctions always occur regularly in different seasons in practice. However, the current maintenance policy in China has not attached deserving importance to seasonal influence, which is considered as one of the main causes for over/under-maintenance. To assess the current maintenance, in this study a double-fold Weibull competing risk model for summer and winter is developed using the real failure data (2008-2011) of locomotives from Urumqi Railway Bureau. Meanwhile, a new approach, termed as Approximately Combined Parameter Method (ACPM), is proposed to combine the initially estimated parameters into different folds, which can avoid a subjective determination of the model's parameters fold. After that, the combined parameters are used as initial values for maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) to achieve an accurate model. Necessary optimizations are introduced based on the chosen models. Results show that the maintenance period differs a lot between winter and summer, and the optimized maintenance can increase the availability and decrease cost more than the existing Policy.

The change of some parameters of an engine structure affects emission of harmful components in engine’s exhaust. This applies first of all to damages in a charge exchange system as well as in a fuel system and an engine supercharging system. These changes are significantly greater during dynamic states and in the time transient processes. It is possible to talk about different sensitivities of emission factors understood here as diagnostic parameters for the same extortion from the structure of the engine but executed in other load states. The article presents a diagnostic model of the engine in which the diagnostic symptoms are indicators and characteristics of the emission of gaseous exhaust components. The model was supplemented with the results of tests on the real object, which was a marine diesel engine. Propose measures of the sensitivity of the diagnostic parameter during dynamic processes - processes characterized by high variability of waveforms, which variability causes problems not only of measurement nature, but also often interpretive.

Opis:
The change of some of the engine’s structural parameters affects the change of toxic compound emission in exhaust gases. It mainly applies to the damage sustained by the charge exchange system as well as the fuel system and the engine supercharging system. These changes are definitely higher during dynamic states and the related transient states. As such, it is possible to speak of a diverse sensitivity of the diagnostic parameters on the exact same excitations which come from the structure of the engine but are realized in other states of load. In the paper presented is the diagnostic model of an engine, based on the theory of multi-equation models, in which the diagnostic symptoms are the indices and characteristics of exhaust gas compound emissions. For the sake of this paper, the modal value of the structure parameters was assumed to be the change in the angle of advance of the fuel injection. The diagnostic model of the engine was supplemented with the results of research conducted on a station equipped with a single cylinder CI test engine. In previous works of the author, the information capacity index method (the Hellwig method) was suggested for the measurement of the sensitivity of a diagnostic parameter. Based on this method, a ranking of diagnostic parameters can be created, which divides the collection of diagnostic transients into stimulators, destimulators and nominants. This normalization of the collection seems to be helpful during making a diagnostic decision.

Opis:
Changing selected engine structure parameters, especially fuel system parameters, affects the emission of harmful compounds in the exhaust gas. Changes in harmful compound emission are frequently ambiguous, as they highly depend on parameters controlling the combustion process. An additional problem is that simple interactions are frequently accompanied with mutual influence of these parameters. Therefore, we can say about different sensitivity of diagnostic parameters to the same excitations coming from the engine structure but executed at different loading states. When the set of diagnostic parameters is numerous and the values of these parameters are similar, there is a real problem with their correct classification, frequently based on subjective assessment by the analyst. In the article, the authors propose a methodology to classify the recorded diagnostic parameters. In earlier works by the authors [4,6,7], the information capacity index method (the Hellwig method) was proposed as the measure of diagnostic parameter sensitivity. Based on this method, a rankling of diagnostic parameters can be created which divides the set of diagnostic variables into stimulators and destimulators. Novel authors’ approach to the presented problem consists in including nominants, i.e. variables with the most favourable value for the analysed aspect of the research, in the set of diagnostic variables. This normalisation of the set is believed to be helpful for making a diagnostic decision free from analyst’s arbitrariness. The zero unitarization method can also be helpful in creating diagnostic tests.

Changing some of the parameters of the engine structure affects the emission of harmful components in the exhaust gases. This primarily concerns damage in the cargo exchange system as well as in the fuel system and engine boost system. Changes in emissions of harmful compounds are often ambiguous, depending largely on the parameters that shape the combustion process. An additional problem is that often simple but undesired interactions occur with the interaction of these parameters. It is therefore possible to speak of different diagnostic parameters' sensitivity to the same extractions from the engine structure, but implemented in other load states. This normalization of the set seems to be helpful in making a diagnostic decision not influenced by the discretion of the researcher. Biodiesel is one of biodegradable and renewable fuel, which is originated from vegetable oil or animal fats. Different fuel properties of biodiesel produce different combustion characteristics which slightly differ to mineral diesel. Combustion studies on palm-biodiesel and mineral diesel were conducted using a multi-cylinder diesel engine operating at medium engine load at 2500 rpm. The engine was water cooled inline four cylinder diesel engines without exhaust gas recirculation system. Cycle-to-cycle variations of peak cylinder pressure and mean indicated pressure of the test fuels were determined for the combustion characteristics of diesel engine. In-cylinder pressure data for the 200 consecutive cycles were determined using a Kistler pressure transducer and recorded into a combustion analyser. Three different engine loads: 20%, 40% and 60% were selected in this study with a constant engine speed of 2500 rpm. The results show that at lower load, in-cylinder pressure variations for palm biodiesel were lower compared to mineral diesel. However, at medium and high loads, palm biodiesel has dominated the peak cylinder variations. Different combustion cyclic variations for mineral diesel and B100 are observed and generally influenced by psychochemical properties differences including viscosity and density of fuel.

With the implementation and expansion of international sulfur emission control areas, effectively promoted the marine low sulfur diesel fuel (MLSDF) used in marine diesel engines. In this study, a large low-speed, two-stroke, cross-head, common rail, electronic fuel injection marine diesel engine (B&W 6S35ME-B9) was used for the study. According to diesel engine’s propulsion characteristics, experiments were launched respectively at 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% load working conditions with marine low sulfur diesel fuel to analyze the fuel consumption, combustion characteristics and emissions (NOx, CO2 , CO, HC) characteristics. The results showed that: Marine diesel engine usually took fuel injection after top dead center to ensure their safety control NOx emission. From 25% to 75% load working condition, engine’s combustion timing gradually moved forward and the inflection points of pressure curve after top dead center also followed forward. While it is necessary to control pressure and reduce NOx emission by delaying fuel injection timing at 100% load. Engine’s in-cylinder pressure, temperature, and cumulative heat release were increased with load increasing. Engine’s CO2 and HC emissions were significantly reduced from 25% to 75% load, while they were increased slightly at 100% load. Moreover, the fuel consumption rate had a similar variation and the lowest was only 178 g/kW·h at 75% load of the test engine with MLSDF. HC or CO emissions at four tests’ working conditions were below 1.23 g/kW·h and the maximum difference was 0.2 or 0.4 g/kW·h respectively, which meant that combustion efficiency of the test engine with MLSDF is good. Although the proportion of NOx in exhaust gas increased with engine’s load increasing, but NOx emissions were always between 12.5 and 13.0 g/kW·h, which was less than 14.4 g/kW·h. Thus, the test engine had good emissions performance with MLSDF, which could meet current emission requirements of the International Maritime Organization.

Opis:
Extensive research is being conducted to create and use a wide range of alternative fuels to accommodate the world's growing energy needs. The objective of this experimental investigation was to analyze the effects of Karanja biodiesel blends on the performance, combustion, and emission characteristics of a compression ignition (CI) engine vis-a-vis neat diesel. Important physical parameters of Karanja oil were examined experimentally after transesterification and determined to be within acceptable limits. BTE of Karanja biodiesel blends was about 3-8% lower than diesel. For Karanja biodiesel blends, BSFC was about 2-9% higher than diesel but exhaust gas temperature and volumetric efficiency were lower. Emissions characteristics such as nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide were also analyzed for various tested fuels. Karanja biodiesel blends resulted in lesser CO and HC formation. Nonetheless, NOx emissions were around 10% greater than diesel. Peak cylinder pressure, heat release rate, and maximum rate of pressure rise versus crank angle were among the combustion characteristics parameters considered in this study. Combustion analysis revealed that for Karanja biodiesel blends heat release rate and peak cylinder pressure were lower than for neat diesel. Findings indicate that Karanja biodiesel can be considered a viable diesel engine fuel.

Opis:
A cylinder liner and piston ring running under starved lubrication near the top dead centre (TDC) and bottom dead centre (BDC) cause abnormal friction and wear during operation of a marine diesel engine. The method of laser texturing is proposed to improve the surface friction property under this condition. Spherical crown pits with different parameters were formed on the surface of samples by femtosecond laser processing. The BDC and TDC conditions of oil starvation were simulated in a reciprocating friction and wear experiment, and a numerical model of Surface texture lubrication based on the Reynolds equation was established. The influence of the distribution density, diameter, and depth parameters of the texture on the surface properties was studied. In the BDC condition, compared with the untextured surface, the average coefficient of friction (COF) can be reduced by up to 24% and the average friction force can be reduced by up to 18%. In the TDC condition, the COF can be reduced by up to 19%, and the average friction force can be reduced by up to 18%. Therefore, the textures with various parameters should be arranged in different positions on the cylinder liner; more attention should be paid to the optimisation of diameter in the texture of the cylinder liner near the BDC, whereas more attention should be paid to the optimisation of distribution density in the texture of the cylinder liner near the TDC
