Technology entrepreneurship focuses on transforming research and scientific potential into innovative goods and services. It is an interesting proposition for small and medium-sized enterprises planning to improve the competitive position based on advanced technology. Its use in economic practice faces certain limitations, arising both from the specifics of that category of entities and the external conditions of their operation. This article aims to identify and analyze of the incidence of barriers to technology entrepreneurship and to assess the impact of these negative factors on the development and benefits of using this concept in the SME sector companies. The survey conducted on a sample of 300 small and medium-sized enterprises from the region of Lodz aims at achieving the objective of the paper. The results allowed to determine the impact of selected barriers (considered by generic criterion and the direction of impact) on the level of development of technology entrepreneurship.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the key features, stages, advantages and threats of servitization as a concept for managing the development of small and medium-sized enterprises. A literature review and empirical research carried out in the form of a case study of the medium-sized company Mikomax sp. z o.o. from Poland served to achieve the aim of the article. The obtained results indicate a significant role of servitization in the development of the analyzed company. A phased approach to the implementation of this concept has been identified, requiring a number of changes to be made in the management systems of the enterprise. Servitization is a source of strategic, marketing and financial benefits for the company, and the management plans to further develop servitization activities aimed at expanding its market offer and building a sustainable competitive advantage.
Jako cel artykułu wyznaczono przedstawienie kluczowych cech, etapów, zalet i zagrożeń serwicyzacji jako koncepcji zarządzania rozwojem małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw. Realizacji celu pracy poświęcono przegląd literatury oraz własne badania empiryczne przeprowadzone w formie studium przypadku firmy średniej wielkości Mikomax sp. z o.o. z Polski. Uzyskane wyniki wykazały istotną rolę serwicyacji w rozwoju badanej firmy. Zidentyfikowano etapowe podejście do wdrażania tej koncepcji, wymagające przeprowadzenia szeregu zmian w systemach zarządzania przedsiębiorstwem. Serwicyzacja jest źródłem korzyści strategicznych, marketingowych i finansowych dla firmy, a kierownictwo planuje dalszy rozwój działań serwicyzacyjnych nakierowanych na rozbudowę oferty rynkowej i budowanie trwałej przewagi konkurencyjnej.

The paper presents result of an empirical study in which presence of values among workers of two mining squads characterized by different level of work performance has been compared. Values have been measured by two scales: Mining Values Scale (MVS) and Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI). The squad with higher performance had significantly higher level of five out of nine values measured by (MVS); while none of the values measured by OCAI have been differentiating the squads with a statistical significance. The results suggest that Managing by Values (MBV) model for a mining corporation should rather be based on values specific for the mining industry rather than general management value set proposed by OCAI. Research results suggest also an association between presence of certain values and work satisfaction among workers.
Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań obecnego poziomu wartości pracy górniczej i występujących w nim różnic dla dwóch oddziałów wydobywczych o podobnej charakterystyce geologicznej, jednak odmiennej efektywności pracy. W tym celu wykorzystano dwa rodzaje wskaźników badania wartości: wartości pracy w zakładzie górniczym oraz badanie klimatu i kultury organizacyjnej. Pięć z dziewięciu analizowanych wartości w istotny sposób różnicuje oddziały i jest wyższa w oddziale o większej wydajności pracy. Pomiędzy oddziałami nie występują natomiast różnice poziomu wartości klasycznie wykorzystywanych w zarządzaniu. Wyniki te sugerują, że funkcjonowanie oddziału wydobywczego może mieć istotny związek z obecnością wartości specyficznych dla górnictwa, które to mogą znacząco wpływać na jakość wykonywanej pracy. Ponadto, obecność wartości na oddziale ma pozytywny związek z zadowoleniem górników z ich własnej pracy i z poczuciem, że współpracownicy sprawnie realizują swoje zadania.

The purpose of the article was to assess the innovation of the food industry in the EU Member States. Innovation of the food industry was compared with the level of economic development of countries, innovative enterprises in general, and the importance of the food industry of individual countries in the domestic economy and the EU. The analyzes were based on data from the Eurostat database. The results indicate the occurrence of the relationship between the level of innovation of enterprises of the food industry and the level of economic development of countries and the overall innovation performance of enterprises in the manufacturing sector. In this regard, we observed it in general as a priority for countries of the old EU. In the case of Germany, Italy, Belgium and the UK, it was also heavily associated with countries in the EU food industry. Estonia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Portugal were characterized by high levels of innovation of the food industry despite the relatively low level of GDP per capita and overall enterprise innovation.
Celem artykułu jest próba oceny innowacyjności przemysłu spożywczego w krajach członkowskich Unii Europejskiej. Innowacyjność przemysłu spożywczego zestawiono z poziomem rozwoju gospodarczego krajów, innowacyjnością przedsiębiorstw ogółem oraz znaczeniem przemysłu spożywczego poszczególnych państw w gospodarce krajowej i unijnej. Analizę przeprowadzono na podstawie danych pochodzących z bazy danych Eurostat. Wyniki badań wskazują na występowanie zależności między poziomem innowacyjności przedsiębiorstw przemysłu spożywczego a stopniem rozwoju gospodarczego krajów oraz ogólną innowacyjnością przedsiębiorstw sektora wytwórczego. W tym zakresie można było zaobserwować ogólne pierwszeństwo krajów starej UE. W przypadku Niemiec, Włoch, Belgii i Wielkiej Brytanii było to związane także z dużym znaczeniem tych krajów w przemyśle spożywczym UE. Wysoką innowacyjnością przemysłu spożywczego – mimo relatywnie niskiego poziomu PKB per capita i ogólnej innowacyjności przedsiębiorstw – wyróżniały się Estonia, Litwa, Czechy i Portugalia.

According to the principle of sustainable development, companies in their activity should follow equally economical targets as well as social and environmental ones Practical implementation of these purposes demands the introduction of ecological management systems into agri-food companies, which enlarge the efficiency of proecological activities in those units.
W artykule zostały przedstawione podstawowe założenia koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz polityki ekologicznej kraju opartej na idei ekorozwoju. Ponieważ przedsiębiorstwa sektora rolno-spożywczego mają duży wpływ na degradację środowiska naturalnego, zaprezentowano również strategie ochrony środowiska w tych przedsiębiorstwach. Strategie prośrodowiskowe wymagają skutecznego instrumentu do prawidłowego funkcjonowania, którym jest właściwa organizacja działań środowiskowych, czyli zarządzanie środowiskiem. Może ono przybierać formy systemu zarządzania środowiskowego, np. według norm ISO 14001 lub wg EMAS.

The main focus of the study is on evaluation, from entrepreneurs perspective, of the current and the future desired level of activity on the part of the state for creating favorable conditions for accommodation and food facilities’ development within the Lublin province. In April and May 2013, in the Lublin province a sample of 317 accommodation and food companies was interviewed through computer-assisted web interview (CAWI). According to the entrepreneurs the state shows little involvement in creating solutions facilitating business activities. Among the most severely criticized the following were indicated: tourism and fiscal policies, and too high charges imposed on employers on account of employing workers. Changes are needed in these areas. Many of the interviewed claimed that in the future the state should intensify activities aimed at both para-tourist and tourist infrastructure development.
Opracowanie koncentruje się na ocenie z punktu widzenia przedsiębiorców obecnej, a także pożądanej w przyszłości aktywności państwa w tworzeniu uwarunkowań sprzyjających rozwojowi punktów i zakładów gastronomicznych oraz obiektów noclegowych funkcjonujących na terenie województwa lubelskiego. Badanie metodą wspomaganego komputerowo wywiadu CAWI (ang. computer-assisted web interview) na próbie 317 przedsiębiorstw świadczących usługi gastronomiczne i noclegowe zrealizowano w kwietniu i maju 2013 roku na obszarze województwa lubelskiego. W opinii przedsiębiorców państwo generalnie mało aktywnie włącza się w kreowanie rozwiązań ułatwiających prowadzenie działalności gospodarczej. Szczególnie krytycznie oceniono przyjętą politykę turystyczną i fiskalną oraz zbyt wysokie obowiązkowe obciążenia pracodawców wynikające z faktu zatrudniania pracowników. W tych obszarach potrzebne są zmiany. W opinii wielu uczestników badania państwo w przyszłości powinno intensyfikować działania prowadzące do rozwoju infrastruktury ogólnej, a także turystycznej.

The paper illustrates the introduction of ecological innovations by a Polish company operating within the rendering industry. The investment resulted not only in the management of large amounts of waste, but also enabled their re-use, thus contributing to environmental protection. However, this is not the only effect of the investments. An improved innovative production process enabled the company to improve its financial situation and, consequently, to gain the position of one of the leaders in the rendering industry in Poland. The methods applied in the research included a descriptive method, a case study method, a personal interview and ratio analysis of financial statements from the examined company. The study used data and materials provided by the company.
Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie przykładu wprowadzenia innowacji o charakterze ekologicznym przez polskie przedsiębiorstwo działające w przemyśle utylizacyjnym. Inwestycja ta spowodowała nie tylko zagospodarowanie znacznych ilości odpadów, ale umożliwiła także ich ponowne wykorzystanie, przyczyniając się tym samym do ochrony środowiska naturalnego. Nie jest to jednak jedyny efekt przeprowadzonych inwestycji. Udoskonalony, innowacyjny proces produkcji pozwolił przedsiębiorstwu poprawić sytuację finansową oraz w konsekwencji osiągnąć pozycję jednego z liderów w przemyśle utylizacyjnym w Polsce. Metodami badawczymi były metoda opisowa, analiza przypadku, metoda wywiadu osobistego oraz analiza wskaźnikowa sprawozdań finansowych badanej firmy. Wykorzystano dane i materiały udostępnione przez przedsiębiorstwo.

Goal – this article’s main goal is to showing that the truly important economic processes happen at the microeconomic level, they happen in enterprises. This is where the surplus value is produced. Producing this value is not easy, however, and is associated with a number of challenges. Research methodology – the author focuses on the descriptive method, which shows, on the one hand, the importance of activity at the microeconomic level, and on the other hand, indicating selected challenges faced by modern enterprises. Score/results – the article allowed to indicate the specificity of conditions in which modern enterprises operate. Large number of them are able to maintain their position in the industry for a very long time. It is able, but it is not so sure. In the conditions of global competition, nothing is certain in the long run, including the position of enterprises. They can work better or worse, they can be very small or larger, they can grow or curl, unfortunately they also fall. Originality/value – the article is a standard description of economic reality. It has no novelty or innovative aspects, it only organizes the described reality.

In the process of shaping particular academic disciplines, there is a need to synthesise the existing research results and on their basis propose new methodological approaches and indicate the possibility of applying new directions of theoretic-cognitive and application research. This is the idea to which the theme and purpose of this paper refers. It proposes a new holistic research concept. The first part of the article reviews the hitherto research problems concerning the operation of an industrial plant (enterprise). Presented are the changing research concepts that initially treated the industrial plant as a landscape element, and then as a production plant affecting the processes of industry concentration, as well as socio-economic and cultural changes of the surroundings. In the second part, in the light of the theory of the dynamic system, the assumption was made that an industrial enterprise is not an isolated element of geographical space, but one of its functional components. Its role changes under the influence of endogenous and exogenous factors, as well as in the process of civilisation development. Using the idea of a dynamic system and the model of the functioning of geographical space, a new, holistic concept of research into the operation and development of an industrial enterprise is proposed. It includes various relationships: between the enterprise and the elements of geographical space (natural, socio-economic, cultural), between the rules of economic development, between different functional types of enterprises, competitive, between the categories of the environment, between the power elites and types of policies. The proposed model approach makes it possible to define various relations with the enterprise and allows for a comprehensive understanding of its functioning in a diversified surroundings, and it provides for the definition of a more precise strategy for its development.

Research background: In the era of the digital revolution, the Internet, automation and robotisation, new industrial relations and dynamic interactions among different stakeholders are giving rise to new opportunities and challenges. The changes associated with the enforcement of the ?Industry 4.0? concept require adaptation to these developments at different levels of the economy and society in order to support digital transformation. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to measure and assess the impact of digital transformation on European countries (EU). The comparative analysis of technological development in EU countries includes three dimensions: the digitalisation of society (Society 4.0), the ability of the economy to face the challenges of technological development (Economy 4.0), as well as the exploitation of ICT in companies (Companies 4.0). Methods: The empirical section of the article was built on a two-stage analytical approach: (a) cluster analysis methods to assess differences and similarities between EU countries (Hierarchical Cluster and K-Means Cluster) and (b) the multi-criteria decision-making method (TOPSIS) to rank countries according to the adopted evaluation criteria. For the purposes of this analysis, data from the Eurostat database have been applied. Findings & value added: The results of this analysis demonstrate the impact of technological transformation on the economy and society in EU countries grouped according to a similar level of development, such as countries with high, medium and low performance. This has contributed to indicating the cohesion in technological development achieved by each country group and to recognising the digitalisation gap between EU Member States. The novelty of this study consists in applying the multi-stage, multi-criteria analysis based on cluster analysis and the TOPSIS method, as well as the comparative analysis of the impact of technological developments on the societies and economies of EU countries. This paper extends similar studies by focusing on the application of a broad range of indicators regarding a holistic perspective including three dimensions: societies, economies and companies. The results provide valuable insights into evaluating the technological progress in European countries.
