Opis:: The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 60 (2012), issue 1. This essay proposes a synthesis of the major themes and issues of Polish Dantism, with a particular reference to the 20th century and beyond. The author retraces the traditional motifs which connect 20th-century authors to the Romantic tradition, and discusses some examples (Gombrowicz, Vincenz, Miłosz) in a broader comparative context (referring specifically to Eliot, Mandelstam, Brodsky). The author argues that the Modernist ethical idea of “necessary Dante” tends to be gradually replaced by a Postmodernist notion of “aesthetic Dante,” with a flowering of new translations—not only of the Divina Commedia. These works restore a balance between Polish literary Dantism and Dante studies. In this sense, the Polish situation displays a lot of similarity to the European and international context, abundant with trends and concerns which go far beyond those of a national language and literature.

Opis:: Artykuł jest próbą ukazania pro-feministycznych przekonań prerafaelickiego malarza i poety. Autorka analizuje dwa wiersze i dwa obrazy Rossettiego, skupiając się na innowacyjności przedstawienia bardzo tradycyjnego tematu – dzieciństwa oraz zwiastowania Najświętszej Marii Panny. Poprzez zestawienie słowa i obrazu, które wchodzą ze sobą w polemiczny dialog, Rossetti poddaje krytyce tradycyjną wizję roli kobiecości w dziewiętnastym wieku. Artysta podkreśla uprzedmiotowienie kobiet we współczesnej mu Anglii i pozbawienie ich prawa decydowania o własnym życiu. Maria, matka Jezusa, nie jest dla Rossettiego ikoną cnót kobiecych, chwaloną za posłuszeństwo i oddanie, ale młodą dziewczyną, obdarzoną misją, która wzbudza w niej lęk i której do końca nie rozumie.

Opis:: The article analyses the Józef Ignacy Kraszewski’s contribution to the development of Dante studies in Poland. It was thanks to his lectures on Dante, held in Krakow and Lviv in 1867, and later published under the title Studies on The Divine Comedy, 1869. The article presents other opinions of Dante scholars of the time and more or less critical reviews of the results of Kraszewski’s research.
Artykuł przedstawia wkład Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego w rozwój polskiej dantologii. Działo się to za sprawą lekcji, które Kraszewski prowadził na temat Dantego w Krakowie i Lwowie w 1867 roku, które następnie, w roku 1869, ukazały się drukiem pod tytułem: Studja nad Komedją Boską. W artykule zaprezentowano inne ówczesne opinie badaczy-dantystów oraz mniej lub bardziej krytyczne recenzje wyników badań Kraszewskiego.

Opis:: Recently, the rapid advancement of the IT industry has resulted in significant changes in audio-system configurations; particularly, the audio over internet protocol (AoIP) network-based audio-transmission technology has received favourable evaluations in this field. Applying the AoIP in a certain section of the multiple-cable zone is advantageous because the installation cost is lower than that for the existing systems, and the original sound is transmitted without any distortion. The existing AoIP-based technology, however, cannot control the audio-signal characteristics of every device and can only transmit multiple audio signals through a network. In this paper, the proposed Audio Network & Control Hierarchy Over peer-to-peer (Anchor) system enables all audio equipment to send and receive signals via a data network, and the receiving device can mix the signals of different IPs. Accordingly, it was possible to improve the system-application flexibility by simplifying the audio-system configuration. The research results confirmed that the received audio signals from different IPs were received, mixed, and output without errors. It is expected that Anchor will become a standard for audio-network protocols.

Opis:: This study refl ects on questions of a beginning and an end in the view of St. Thomas Aquinas and Dante Alighieri. Critical and comparative analysis will show: (1) in what ways the authors perceived the ultimate goals of humanity; and (2) what impact doing so had on their political outlooks. In both cases treatises came to life with two purposes: the declared (theoretical) purpose – discussion of how to organize a well-functioning state – and actual (practical) – resolution of the dispute between the regnum and the sacerdotium, that is, determination of which party deserves precedence. The heart of the matter lies in the differences between the two accounts, given how the two mediaeval thinkers arrived at completely different conclusions in addressing the same question.

Opis:: Although the works of three early Italian Renaissance poets, Brunetto Latini (1220-1294), Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), and Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), may seem far removed from the social science ventures of the 21st century, these three Italian authors provide some exceptionally valuable materials for scholars interested in the study of human knowing and acting. As central participants in the 13th-14th century “humanist movement” (in which classical Greek and Latin scholarship were given priority in matters of intellectual development), Brunetto Latini, Dante Alighieri, and Giovanni Boccaccio helped sustain an analytic focus on human lived experience. Most of the materials addressed here are extensively fictionalized, but our interests are in the sociological insights that these authors achieve, both in their accounts of the characters and interchanges portrayed in their texts and in their modes of presentation as authors. Although lacking the more comprehensive aspects of Chicago-style symbolic interactionist (Mead 1934; Blumer 1969) theory and research, these early Renaissance texts are remarkably self-reflective in composition. Thus, these statements provide us with valuable insights into the life-worlds of (a) those of whom the authors speak, (b) those to whom the authors address their works, and (c) the authors themselves as people involved in generating aspects of popular culture through their poetic endeavors. More specifically, these writers enable us to appreciate aspects of pragmatist emphases on human knowing and acting through their attentiveness to people’s perspectives, speech, deliberation, action, and interaction. In addressing affective relationships, introducing generic standpoints, and considering morality as community matters, these materials offer contemporary scholars in the social sciences some particularly instructive transhistorical and transcultural comparative and conceptual reference points. Inspired by the remarkable contributions of the three 13th-14th century Italian poets and some 12th- 13th century French predecessors, the Epilogue direct specific attention to the ways in which authors might engage poetic productions as “producers” and “analysts” of fictionalized entertainment.

Opis:: Can world peace come about through a world federation of governments? Is growing agreement and appreciation for, throughout the world, the doctrine of equal human rights inevitable? Such questions are raised by Mortimer Adler in How to Think about War and Peace. Adler argues in this book that both are possible, and in doing so he argues that the insights of liberal contract thinkers, particularly Immanuel Kant, are essentially true. Kant argues that each person has the capacity to discover within himself the foundation for human rights because they are self-evident. It follows that over time inequalities and prejudices will disappear, and people will gain the freedom to advance the cause of peace. About this account of the possibility of world peace I ask the question: is it indeed reasonable? For if it is reasonable, it is not reasonable for the reasons that would have been advanced by Aristotle or Plato or their medieval followers. In older political philosophy it is agreement about the unchanging truth of things that can bring peace. To seek the unchanging truth of things, philosophical speculation about God and things divine, is the highest human activity. It is that end to which life in this world is directed, and upon which human flourishing depends. Freedom depends upon our openness to unchanging eternal truth, even more than self-evident rights; the exercise of speculative reasoning allows for political discourse and an open society.
