    North Cameroon displays nearly sixty local languages for an estimated 3,500,000 people. Such a multilingualism is offset by the use of a major trade language, Fulfulde or Fula (spoken by Fulɓe or Fulani), which allows basic exchanges to take place in many settings. Owing to increased rates of school attendance, French has been taking on a greater but still limited role in interethnic communication. The question of language comes immediately to the fore in any medical consultation, yet there are also prior cultural factors in play which have a strong impact on the procedure.

    As the world becomes more and more culturally diverse, an accurate knowledge of the influence of cultural factors on the mental processes of an individual and the construction of social capital become increasingly important for our ability to effectively understand differences in culture. How can we cope with this task in everyday life? What is the relevance of comparative education in this process? One solution could be to create a certain intellectual map of cultural similarities and differences to which we could refer at any time in order to better understand the diversity around us. Such a peculiar encyclopaedia of knowledge about the diversity of the world has not yet been created, and it is unlikely that it will, given the dynamics of social processes, the multiplicity of events and ways of understanding them. Then how can a rational model for dealing with cultural diversity be created? In this article, I want to draw attention to the importance of comparative education in the creation of such a model, taking into account the relatively new position of comparativists recognising that a considerably important role in the process of coping with cultural diversity and difference is played i.a. by dialogic memory.

    Subject and purpose of work: The main goal is to offer more productive approach to security culture: viewing culture as a logical system which can be understood using theories and principles developed. Materials and methods: Cultural security issue collaborative research and discovery of literature to fully exploit social networks and open source material. Results: Cultural security issue analyzes the hard and soft power of antiquities, artworks, religious monuments, and historic structures as indicators of the political economy of cultural property. Conclusions. Analyses of the political significance of historic structures and religious monuments and the licit and illicit global market for antiquities and artworks provide insights into the strategic role of cultural property in diplomacy and international security. Integrating operational cultural principles into the specific conditions is the future and will bring depth to touchstones such as “no better friend, no worse enemy,” and “first, do no harm”.
    Subject and purpose of work: Głównym celem pracy jest zaproponowanie bardziej efektywnego podejścia do kultury bezpieczeństwa: postrzegania kultury jako logicznego systemu, który można zrozumieć za pomocą opracowanych teorii i zasad. Materiały i metody: Badania nad bezpieczeństwem kulturowym realizowane w ramach współpracy oraz przegląd literatury, aby w pełni wykorzystać sieci społecznościowe i publiczne materiały źródłowe. Wyniki: Bezpieczeństwo kulturowe analizuje twardą i miękką siłę antyków, dzieł sztuki, zabytków sakralnych i budowli historycznych jako wskaźników ekonomii politycznej dóbr kultury. Wnioski: Analizy politycznego znaczenia budowli historycznych i zabytków religijnych oraz legalnego i nielegalnego globalnego rynku antyków i dzieł sztuki umożliwiają wgląd w strategiczną rolę dóbr kultury w dyplomacji i bezpieczeństwie międzynarodowym. Włączenie operacyjnych zasad kulturowych w określone warunki to kwestia przyszłości, która nada również głębszy wyraz takim fundamentalnym zasadom, jak „nie ma lepszego przyjaciela, ani gorszego wroga” oraz „po pierwsze, nie szkodzić”.

The problem is solved through outlining the gradual stages of the pedagogical technology as one of the main vectors of the pedagogic process. The stages of the pedagogical technology are based on the invariable stages of any person's activity. They are orientating and motivating, cognitive and informative, transformational and analytical, reflexive and estimating. The efficiency of the proposed pedagogical technology is proved by the pedagogical experiment.

    Legal definitions are vital for effective legal communication. This paper outlines main conventions of formulating definitions in statutes and contracts. Legal definitions are analyzed here from cross-cultural perspective against (legislative) drafting guidelines and theory of law. Their formulation may depend, inter alia, on legal system, branch of law, legal genre, position within the document, and type of legal definition.An attempt is then made to examine how formal aspects of formulating legal definitions may affect the interpretation and thus translation of law terms. This interdisciplinary cross-cultural examination provides a theoretical basis for sketching main approaches to English-Polish (Polish-English) translation of the definition section in ratified international instruments published in Polish Journal of Laws.The translation practice trends towards legal definitions seem to be more and more informed by the globalization and ‘Europeanisation’ processes now constituting a still broader context of legal communication rather than confined to the text of a legal instrument itself.

    Focusing on Stradbroke Dreamtime (1972), the first prose book of an Australian Indigenous poet, activist and educationalist, Oodgeroo Noonuccal (also known as Kath Walker), I reflect on questions which arise around cross-cultural communication and translation. Prompted by the unfinished project aimed at translating Stradbroke Dreamtime into Polish, I deliberate on challenges to respond appropriately to Australian Indigenous writing, particularly if it is influenced by white editing and publishing practices which often privilege Eurocentric views. Situating Stradbroke Dreamtime in the broader context of Noonuccal’s life, political activism and pedagogical efforts, I read her work as an intergenerational, inclusive and transformative project, and an act of solidarity between generations and cultures. In the context of Indigenous Australia, the concept of solidarity is often associated with reconciliation. I explore this nexus, arguing that Stradbroke Dreamtime reflects Walker’s strategy for reconciliation which includes empowering children through storytelling.

    The aim of the paper is to explore cross-cultural communication through the lens of translingual writers. In order to do so, we will present a short overview of the key theories concerning cross-cultural communication. Next, we will add some testimonies of the translingual writers into the equation by describing their personal perspectives related to writing in a foreign language. Adopting the translingual writers’ point of view while reflecting on the concept of cross-cultural communication is of crucial importance as it might shed some light on the complex interplay of the differentfactors that pertainto successful communication in different cultural contexts.

    The research is based on a range of scientific approaches such as communication and activity-oriented, dialogue-centered, personality-directed, culture-oriented and technological. The stages of the pedagogic technology of forming cross-cultural communication experience are outlined. They are orientation and motivation, cognitive and informative, transforming and analytical, reflexion and estimation. In accordance to each stage, some of the didactic means of preparation of future managers of foreign economic activity for cross-cultural communication are elaborated and characterized. During the outlined stages students develop their motivation for improving cross-cultural communication abilities, obtain skills for reflexivity of their own and others' communicative activity, get knowledge in different aspects of cross-cultural communication, acquire communicative skills, in particular those concerning managing cross-cultural conflicts.

    Motivated by the Speech Act theory, gender-specific use of language, and cross-cultural communication, this study intended to address quantitatively how cultural differences and gender patterns affect the way Persian and English native-speaking spouses apologize and utilize apology strategies in their conversational routines. To triangulate data, both a questionnaire (Chopman, 2012) and a focus-group semi-structured open-ended interview were used to collect data on sixty participants’ linguistic behavior and their apology exchange. The Chi-square results for inter-cultural/gender comparisons indicated a higher rate of apologies among the English spouses and a variety in the rate and kind of apology strategies use. However, intra-cultural ones demonstrated twice more apology use by Persian females than males and no significant difference between the English spouses. The findings may have great appeal for both EFL learners and teachers to attend more to the nature of the apology speech act and its exchange among various groups and in different cultures and provide Persian EFL learners with information that may help them improve their pragmatic competence in English. The study also contributes to the pragmatics teaching curriculum and EFL research.

    Cel. Celem badania było ukazanie opinii studentów pielęgniarstwa na temat najczęściej występujących trudności w nawiązaniu skutecznej komunikacji oraz wskazanie postaw, umiejętności i wiedzy niezbędnych w interakcjach z pacjentem odmiennym kulturowo. Materiał i metoda. W badaniu wzięło udział 354 studentów pierwszego roku z pięciu szkół w Turcji, Polsce i na Węgrzech. Przekrojowe badanie zostało oparte na kwestionariuszu opracowanym przez jedną z autorek. Wyniki. W nawiązaniu skutecznej komunikacji podkreślano znajomość języka i mówienie wolno, bez żargonu medycznego. Czynnikiem najważniejszym w podejściu do pacjenta odmiennego kulturowo są przezwyciężanie postawy etnocentrycznej, uprzedzeń, stereotypów oraz postawa poszanowania siebie i drugiego człowieka, wśród umiejętności ważne są otwartość w stosunku do innych kultur. Stwierdzono różnice pomiędzy poszczególnymi krajami. Wnioski. Mimo iż studenci zwracają uwagę na wagę komunikacji w relacji z pacjentem odmiennym kulturowo i wykazują do niej gotowość, wymagają przygotowania do wejścia w interakcje międzykulturowe

    Aim of the article is to provide critical examination of manipulation process as multidimensional phenomenon related to imagination, representation, translation and interpreting of original texts in light of assurance of informational safety that is our research object. Our research corresponds to theory and practice of translation, psychology, comparative religious studies, international relations, public diplomacy and national security. Methods. Research methodology is based on critical analysis of manipulations with texts; the methods have been borrowed from works of Gilbert Durand (1999), Michel Maffesoli (1996) and James Frazer (2012) on social anthropology. Results. Practical value of obtained results consists in proposed algorithm for critical analysis of translated or interpreted texts that allows to evaluate their quality according to context, meaning and semiotics of the source texts. The notion of empire as an archetype that was implemented into contemporary international relations is also revised and extended. That can help in analysis and prevention of different forms and means of outside and inside tactics of deviant influence on societies and to illuminate threats for cultural identity and spiritual diversity of the global community. Conclusions. Phenomenon of marginalization of cultural and spiritual identity (sacral sphere) under the influence of globalization by the means of soft power pressure can be evaluated today as the unspoken impact of influence agents implemented into new societal institutes in the form of alien cultural imperatives that are enforced to different communities as common for all agendas in the frameworks of postmodern stream.

    Conflict analysis and their management showed that during the past decades its scientific understanding changed from the social sciences to interdisciplinary management fields. Conflicts are examined and defined in their own way by management, psychology, politics, law, economics and other sciences. Solutions of conflicts are an integral part of business negotiations – in negotiations are solved various inconsistencies, conflicts of both negotiating parties. Conflict resolution techniques can change in dependence on the culture of the country. In negotiations with the representatives of other countries is necessary to know the dominating conflict management styles in the relevant country and how it is possible to adjust own behavior. A significant number of modern business negotiations are international, so it is proposal to use mediator in negotiations of another culture who is an individual having the same cultural experience as business partners. In process of preparation for negotiations with other country is necessary to take into account the characteristics of relationships prevailing in that country. This paper reviews the process of conflicts in negotiations and their prevention in the interaction of different cultures. Also this paper analyzes the impact of exchange of information and management of expectations for the prevention of conflicts in the negotiations. In order to manage the expectations of the other side of the negotiations is necessary to find out in the preparation phase the values of partner, and try to manage information in negotiations, understanding the values and the context of the other side of negotiations, in order to form useful for us expectations from the other side, which would help to avoid further conflicts in the negotiating process.
    Liczba badań i publikacji naukowych poświęconych zarządzaniu konfliktami znacznie zwiększyła się w ciągu kilkudziesięciu lat. Cechuje się ono interdyscyplinarnym podejściem i konsoliduje wysiłki naukowców z zakresu zarządzania, psychologii, prawa, polityki, ekonomii i innych nauk. Techniki rozwiązywania konfliktów, w tam negocjacje, są uzależnione od kultury otoczenia, w którym mają miejsce. W toku przygotowania do międzynarodowych negocjacji ważne jest więc uwzględnienie kulturowych różnic negocjatorów. Niniejszy artykuł jest poświęcony problematyce zapobiegania konfliktom w procesie negocjacji partnerów należących do różnych kultur. Omówiono w nim problem wymiany informacji i pokierowania oczekiwaniami negocjatorów w ich wzajemnym dochodzeniu do porozumienia. Wobec nieporozumień lub konfliktów, już na etapie przygotowania do negocjacji należy uważnie ustosunkować się do kulturowych wartości partnera, a w toku negocjacji pomóc mu sprecyzować swoje oczekiwania w odpowiednim kierunku.

    Opis:
    Linguists consider insults/swear words as interjections carrying an expressive, cathartic, function, through which the enunciator manifests emotions. We provide a contrastive study of insults/swear words, investigating whether there are specific morphological/syntactic structures pertaining to insults/swear words and discuss the cross-cultural similarities/differences in the pragmatic use of this kind of language, focusing on the perspective of politeness. To do so, we analyse examples drawn from Hergé’s TinTin and their translation into Greek and English, this comic being rich in insults /swear words due to the particularities of the genre of discourse and Captain Haddock’s expressive character. The question is whether the implicit pragmatic/cultural values are the same in all the texts or there are important differences, which can be traced, deriving from the particularities of each of the languages of study. It emerged that the Greek chosen utterances reflect all the parameters influencing the original: phonological, semantic, pragmatic, stylistic. The English version seems to be more distant on all levels of analysis. The (non)preservation of the parameters depends on the peculiarities of the Greek, French and English languages and on the collective images of the recipients. Our conclusions match previous researches, proving Greek as positive politeness oriented, opposed to English (see also Romero 2000; Sifianou 2001). 
    W opinii wielu językoznawców zniewagi i przekleństwa uważane są za wtrącenia transmitujące funkcję ekspresywną wypowiedzi, poprzez którą osoba wypowiadająca je manifestuje swoje emocje (Guiraud 1975; Rouayrenc 1998). Ich użycie ma więc charakter oczyszczający. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przeprowadzenie kontrastywnej analizy językowej w odniesieniu do zniewag i przekleństw. Aby osiągnąć zamierzone cele, autorka zestawia przykłady zaczerpnięte z komiksu TinTin Hergé’a i ich tłumaczenia na grecki i angielski, a to z uwagi na fakt, że komiks ów, ze względu na specyficznym typ dyskursu obecnego w nim i ekspresywny charakter Kapitana Haddoka, obfituje w zniewagi i przekleństwa, co z kolei jest źródłem oralności i hiperboliczności. Należy zadać pytanie: czy pragmatyka wyrażona implicite i wartości kulturowe są takie same we wszystkich analizowanych tu tekstach, czy też można zaobserwować znaczące różnice? Okazuje się, że wersja grecka preferuje powiązane ze sobą wyrazy złożone, a wybrane wypowiedzi stanowią odzwierciedlenie wszystkich parametrów zamieszczonych w oryginale, tj. fonologicznych, semantycznych, pragmatycznych i stylistycznych. W odróżnieniu od powyższego, wersja angielska wydaje się być bardziej oddalona na każdym poziomie analizy. Jednocześnie (nie) utrzymywanie parametrów zależy od specyficznych cech języka greckiego, francuskiego i angielskiego, jak również od wspólnych wyobrażeń odbiorców tekstu. Uzyskane wyniki są spójne z wcześniejszymi wnioskami i potwierdzają, że język grecki, w przeciwieństwie do angielskiego, jest raczej zorientowany na pozytywne formy uprzejmość (zob. Romero 2000; Sifianou 2001).
