Opis:
The aim of this paper is to ascertain corporate investment reaction in bank-dependent companies in times of crisis. Our investigation covers the differences in corporate investment reaction due to the global financial crisis (GFC) of 2007–2009 and the COVID-19 crisis of 2020–2021. We utilized panel data of companies present on the Warsaw Stock Exchange during the GFC and COVID-19 crisis—932 firm-year observations. We found a negative relationship between bank dependence (static ratio) and corporate investment, but a statistical significance was found only for the GFC period. We also found a positive relationship between bank dependence (dynamic ratio) and corporate investment, but statistical significance was found only for the GFC period. Additionally, we found that during the COVID-19 crisis, the level of corporate investment was at its lowest level, but the biggest drop was noticeable during the GFC when compared to the pre-GFC period. Our article contributes to the existing research by being part of the research on corporate investment and capital structure. It consists of the research on one of the determinants of the corporate investment and capital structure decisions—macroeconomic turbulence manifested in economic crises.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to verify the theory of the balance sheet channel among Polish listed companies, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic period. This objective was achieved by examining the relationship between cash flow and investment, based on an Emerging Markets Information Services (EMIS) database covering companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, including the bourse’s alternative NewConnect market, and using panel econometric models (pooled OLS, Fixed Effect Model, Random Effect Model and Panel VAR). It has been established that there are no grounds to reject the hypotheses that investment is positively associated with the cash flow of Polish listed companies and that the relationship between investment and cash flow is particularly strong for financially constrained companies. This means that there is evidence in support of the balance sheet channel theories. The hypothesis that the relationship between cash flow and investment is especially strong for financially constrained companies during the COVID-19‑induced recession has been rejected. The main novelty of the paper is that the balance sheet channel theory was verified for Polish listed companies, with a particular emphasis on the COVID-19 pandemic period.
Celem artykułu jest weryfikacja teorii kanału bilansowego wśród polskich spółek giełdowych – szczególnie w okresie pandemii COVID-19. Został on zrealizowany przez zbadanie relacji pomiędzy przepływami pieniężnymi a inwestycjami. Opis:
Over the past 20 years the phenomenon of socially responsible investment (SRI) has grown considerably in popularity and there has been in particular a sharp increase in research into its environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects. The process of SRI itself and research into this diverse phenomenon have become widespread particularly in developed countries and essentially supported by international organizations, specialized financial consulting companies, and institutional investors. The issues of theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of SRI in the Ukrainian market have considerable potential for research. The aim of the article is to study theoretical and methodological aspects of SRI as well as define the current state and prospects of socially responsible investment in Ukraine. The article covers the existing differences in the approaches to defining socially responsible investment and social investment, describes their features and proposes a method of classification, as well as clarifying the role of SRI under conditions of sustainable development. The current problems and prospects of SRI development in Ukraine are discussed.

Opis:
This paper explores the introduction of SICAV in Czech law, its development and the related difficulties including the tax perspective. Although this legal form helped to boost the collective investment sector in the Czech Republic, in particular for qualified investors’ funds, it is under constant threat of law amendments, which have a negative impact on further progress in the popularity of SICAVs as well as other forms of investment funds. SICAV, as a legal form governed by both private (corporate) and public (regulatory) law, presents a good example of how the two sets of partly autonomous rules may clash and cause undesirable effects. The paper highlights the main inefficiencies and discrepancies, which lead to interpretation difficulties and legal uncertainty. The hypothesis of this paper lies in investigating how local factors in one country, such as the influence of other pieces of legislation and tax environment, negatively impact solutions and models which are standardised and successfully deployed across the EU. It is argued that not only legal and regulatory aspects determine the popularity of investment funds, but a wider landscape, including the activities and approach of the supervisory authority and network of professionals (legal and tax advisors or auditors), plays a crucial role in capital markets development.

Opis:
Research background: Since the Internet bubble, which took place at the turn of XX and XXI century, on the global capital markets, including Poland, one may note a growing interest in companies focusing on innovations and innovativeness. The main driver of this interest is the belief that in a longer term innovations and expenditures on research and development will translate into an increase in competitive advantage, financial results, and subsequently also the market value of companies. On the other hand, the attention should also be paid to the fact that innovative activity has also another, darker, side, which is identified with the far-reaching uncertainty about its final effects and the possibility of incurring losses, especially in financial dimension. At the same time, it should be noted that implementation of investment strategy regarding the shares of innovative companies is quite troublesome because of the lack of unified methodology for assessing corporate innovativeness and large information diversity in this area. Purpose of the article: The investment efficiency analysis of investment strategy regarding shares of companies perceived to be innovative with simultaneous focusing on the different cases of situation development in time. Methods: The research was carried out for companies listed on the main market of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, taking into consideration various time ranges of investment. The efficiency analysis of this investment strategy was conducted in the risk-return outlay with the use of such measures as: accumulated rate of return, arithmetic average rate of return, standard and semi-standard deviation, as well as coefficients of variation and semi-variation of rate of return and their inverses. Findings & Value added: The obtained results show that in shorter periods of time, inves-tors buy expectations connected with innovative companies and therefore, the efficiency of investment in their shares is relatively high, but in the longer term expectations are revised by companies' financial results, which in turn often negatively affects the investment efficiency.

Opis:
The paper aims to find what determines the choice of companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) between public debt (corporate bonds) and private debt (bank loans). For this purpose, we estimate logistic regression models and panel models of corporate borrowing determinants to compare the impact of enterprise characteristics on financing with the use of corporate bonds or bank loans. In this study, we are interested in explanatory variables that explain the role of transparency measured by the level of information disclosure; and a risk proxy of the variability of operational cash flows and investment risk (retrieved from generalised auto-regressive conditional heteroscedasticity [GARCH] models estimated on companies’ stocks [shares] trading on the WSE).

Opis:
The aim of this study was to verify the short-term impact of financial variables on the corporate reputation perceived by investors. In the study we applied an approach from the field of business valuation assuming that corporate reputation perceived by investors is reflected in the difference between the valuation of a company by investors and its book value. Using panel data methodology, we analysed impacts of selected financial variables, representing company’s profitability, stability and its level of risk, on these differences in valuations of selected companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Particularly, we chose companies operating in Construction and IT sectors to represent different types of activities (industry vs. services), which impacts also the diversity in the structure of their financial statements. In the study we used multiple regression models and analysis of contingency tables (chi-squared tests of independence and Yule’s coefficient of colligation). Our data suggest that there is a lack of strong short-term relations between analysed financial variables and corporate reputation. Nevertheless, we found different determinants of corporate reputation in the Construction sector (stability and profitability as well as their changes) and in the IT sector (stability, changes in profitability and the level of financial risk).

Opis:
Research background: In the Visegrad Four (V4) countries (Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia), the inward foreign direct investment (FDI) shows high shares in the exports and gross domestic product (GDP). Furthermore, reinvested earnings play a significant role in the national balances of payments (BoP). Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the reinvestment rates and effective corporate income tax rates (ETRs) of transnational corporations (TNCs) and financial institutions settled in the V4 countries and compare them with the said rates in other European Union (EU) Member States. It is essential to unveil factors shaping investors? decisions to reinvest profits. Policymakers should reflect on them when cultivating the overall business climate to boost citizens? welfare. Purpose of the article: We aim to identify the determinants of the FDI profit reinvestment rate in the V4 countries as host economies from 2014 to 2019 and draw a comparison with the EU?27 average. We dedicate special attention to the correlation between the reinvestment and the ETRs and other selected business climate indicators as specified in the World Bank?s Ease of Doing Business (World Bank, 2020). Methods: To assess the determinants of the reinvestment rates, we employ a three-stage model of multiple linear regression, where we analyse extensive datasets published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Eurostat, World Bank, and public and aggregate country-by-country reports (CbCR) provided by the respective financial institutions and TNCs. Findings & value added: Our research shows that the corporate income tax (CIT) rate and ETRs significantly correlate with the reinvestment rate. The same applies to three Ease of Doing Business sub-indicators (Starting a business, Getting credit, and Contract enforcement). Contrary to the findings of Lundan (2006), Beugelsdijk et al. (2010), Nguyen and Rugman (2015), and Sutherland et al. (2020), macroeconomic factors, the profitability of corporations, and exchange rate stability turned out to be statistically insignificant. Our research has policy implications, for it can contribute to policy discussions on enhancing business environments in the V4 countries and ways to motivate foreign investors to reinvest their profits. The added value combines macroeconomic data with the unique and relatively new CbCR databases.

Opis:
Large investments can have significant impacts on local development, as illustrated by the conceptsof the multiplier effect and corporate social responsibility. The subject in this paper is the Volkswagen -Crafter car production plant opened in 2016 in Białężyce near Września (Wielkopolskie Voivodeship in Poland), one of the largest greenfield investments in western Poland since 1990. On the basis of the data obtained from company representatives and local governments, the numerous benefits for local residents and the natural environment resulting from the investment and actions undertaken at Volkswagen have been described. Questionnaires among residents have shown that the main benefits of the plant are the creation of new jobs, new municipal and infrastructure investments, an increase in Września’s prestige, an increase in service sector activity as well as housing for new inhabitants and start-up companies cooperating with Volkswagen. The recognition and reliability of Volkswagen as an employer and large enterprise (along with other factors, e.g. discounts on cars for employees) influence the above -average sales of Volkswagen in Września Poviat.
