Opis:
The aim of the study was to use regenerated activated carbon to adsorb phenol from a river. Coconut shell activated carbon was derived from used tap water filter cartridges. The activated carbon was carbonised and then activated with KOH at 200°C, under a nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting adsorbent was characterised on the basis of nitrogen adsorption by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and point of zero charge (pH PZC). The study of periodic adsorption included kinetic and equilibrium modelling, determined the effect of solution pH on efficiency and the possibility of regeneration and reuse of the adsorbent. The efficiency of phenol removal from model water was evaluated, followed by the possibility of their adsorption from a polluted river in Silesia Province. Phenol adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorbents showed high adsorption abilities, as determined by the Langmuir isotherm model. The model fits the experimental data well. The concentration of phenol in the river was in the range of 0.45-0.77 mg∙dm-3, which means that its value was at least five times higher than the standard values. The use of regenerated activated carbon from waste filter cartridges removed phenol from the river by 78% using optimal test parameters.

Opis:
In several industrial environments, mechanical risks are often combined with various contaminants such as oils and greases, which may reduce the performance of protective gloves against mechanical hazards. However, glove properties are characterized on new and clean specimens, and little is known about their residual resistance once contaminated and over time. In this study, a series of protective gloves used in metalworking companies and garages were exposed to relevant oils and greases. Used gloves were also obtained from a food processing center and a garage. Their residual resistance to mechanical risks (cutting, puncture and tearing) was evaluated using standard test methods. Results revealed in some instances a large decrease in resistance to mechanical risks. Since a corresponding change in the material aspect may not always be easily observable, this may lead to serious safety breaches. These findings demonstrate the need to further the research in this domain.

A description of solute migration through porous media is presented. It is assumed that transport of contaminants may be considered as an effect of the two processes: advection and dispersion. The advective transport is attributed to an average motion of the solution through the porous skeleton. The dispersive transport results from molecular diffusion and mechanical mixing. In the paper the Fickian as well as Non-Fickian dispersion is considered.

Assessments of public swimming pools in Owerri municipal, Imo state, Nigeria was carried out for the purpose of determining the suitability of water for swimming in this fun loving town of Nigeria. Five public pools were selected by purposive sampling from more than 30 pools in the area. Water samples were collected in the morning and evening from pools and analyzed in triplicates for physicochemical properties and heavy metals content by using standard method for water analysis and Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. Data obtained were compared with WHO and EPA standards for drinking and recreational water and modeled on the Water Quality Index (WQI). Results revealed that pH ranged from 7.10±0.02 to 8.1±1.27 pH units, EC ranged from 40 ±3.11 µS/cm to 80±3.44 µS/cm, COD value ranged from 0.08±0.07 to 1.02 ±0.91, BOD value ranged from 0.03±0.02 to 3.14±0.13, dissolved oxygen (DO) ranged 3.9±1.77 mg/kg to 9.3±2.41 mg/kg, suspended solids ranged from 6.43±8.21 mg/l to 42.44±7.00 mg/l, total dissolved solids (TDS) ranged from 22±2.90 mg/l to 97.98±8.79 mg/l. The major cations were below the standard. Nitrate ranged from 0.91±0.02 mg/l to 0.96 mg/l, sulphate ranged from 2.34±0.10 mg/l to 2.81±0.11mg/l, phosphate ranged from 0.34±0.02 mg/l to 0.65±0.02 mg/l while chloride ranged from 12.75±1.89 mg/l to 31.89±2.04 mg/l with mean 24.23 mg/l. Except for chloride, all other studied anions were lower than the permissible limit set by WHO/EPA. Concentration of lead (Pb), iron (Fe), Copper (Cu) were also below the permissible limit. The individual WQ indexes showed A (3.32), B (5.44), C (10.08), D (12.40) and E (9.77) with average WQI of 8.20 suggesting that the swimming pools are of “Excellent water quality”, thereby suggesting safe swimming pools for recreational activities in the study area. Values of exposure pathways for all metals at all swimming pools were less than one. Therefore there were no risks of heavy metals from the swimming pools.

The necessary calculations were made using modern calculation techniques in the Information Center SGGW-AR. Defining these soil relationships is the basis for constructing models that will objectively define the actual state of "soil resistance to contamination". These models should become the basis for planning plant production for areas with a higher degree of risk, and also affect the still current problem of stereotypical testing of soil suitability for agricultural production, known as "soil valuation"

Air-dried samples of glacial till were polluted in the laboratory with petrol and diesel oil. A comparative analysis of natural and contaminated material was made on the basis of mercury porosimetry measurements. The investigation revealed relatively slight changes in the pore space of the polluted samples, which were as sociated with adsorption of hydrocarbons onto the soil particles rather than with microstructural change. Introduction of non-polar organic fluid into soil pores did not cause rearrangement of the natural soil structure. Due to the initial air-dried state of the soil material, these findings pertain to unsaturated soils only. These results contribute to the crucial, but still poorly recognized problem of the engineering geology properties of organic contaminated soils.

Opis:
The increase in cases of food borne illnesses related to street vended fruit salad in developing countries is of serious public health concern. This study was, therefore, conducted on street-vended fruit salad, to determine their microbial quality. A total of twenty (20) fruit samples, comprising five each of fresh Apple (Malus domestica Borkh), Pineapple (Ananas comosus L.), Pawpaw (Carica papaya) and Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) were collected from 3 different locations (Watt, Marian and Goldie) in Calabar and were evaluated by way of standard plate techniques, for microbial contaminants. The specific microbial genera were enumerated on appropriate selective media and identified using standard identification parameters with the aid of identification and taxonomic manuals. The results revealed that the mean total bacterial counts of all the fruit samples ranged from 1.07 × 103 to 3.4 × 103CFU/g, whereas, the mean total coliform counts ranged from 0.9 × 103 to 2.05 × 103 CFU/g, respectively. The differences in the mean total heterotrophic counts and coliform counts recorded for the fruits collected from the respective food vendors was statistically insignificant (P>0.01). Bacteria isolated include Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella sp, Shigella sp, Proteus mirabilis and Escherichia coli. The presence of coliform bacteria and other microbial contaminants in numbers exceeding the recommended microbiological standards is a reflection of unwholesome product, hence the need for proper microbiological safety analysis of fruit salad prepared for human consumption. Therefore, consumer’s awareness on the dangers of consuming pathogen contaminated foods and the need to insist on properly processed/stored sliced produce, needs to be re-awakened.

Several copper extractants have been examined in laboratory glassware with a special attention paid to their behavior towards cations others than copper(II). In the studies 25 vol. percent of hydrocarbon (Exxsol D80 AZ) solutions of six industrial copper extractants have been used. They were mainly rea-gents of hydrooxime type (LIX 860N-IC, LIX 984, LIX 984N, LIX 84-I, Acorga M5640) and diketone type LIX 54-100. Individual isotherms of independent extraction of copper(II) and selected cations (Fe3+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Mg2+) versus equilibrium pH have been compared. Investigations have been conducted with synthetic 0.1 mol/L solutions of their sulfates. The values of pH50% − parameter defined as an equilibrium pH at the moment of half-and-half extraction of the investigated cationic spe-cies have been presented. Also ΔpH50%, that is differences between values of pH50% for specific cation Me(II) and copper(II): ΔpH50% = pH50%(Me) − pH50%(Cu), have been given. In addition to that 25% LIX 984 has been used in counter-current pilot trials for copper(II) extraction from naturally contaminated solutions produced by bioleaching of industrial sulfide copper concentrate to observe behavior of investi-gated contaminants such as correlations between their real co-extraction with copper(II) and the position of their extraction on the pH scale. Copper electrolyte/strip solution, working alternately within close loop of coupled stripping - electrowinning system, has been analyzed during consecutive cycles to observe building up of the contaminants concentrations in the course of test.

Opis:
When analyzing the symptoms of eutrophication and water quality in a small retention reservoir Bachmaty, an attempt to assess changes in its trophic condition before and after modernization, was undertaken. The study upon changes in water trophic level was carried out on a small retention reservoir Bachmaty located in Podlasie region on the Orlanka river in the municipality of Dubicze Cerkiewne. Tests of water samples collected from the surface layer of the coastal zone were performed once a month, and the time of the research was divided into two periods. The first period was conducted since April 2007 to March 2008 and since April 2009 to March 2010. The second research period included the time immediately after the reservoir reclamation, which ended in May 2011. The study was conducted since May 2011 to March 2012 and since April 2013 to March 2014. The trophic level of Bachmaty reservoir was also assessed according to the concentration criteria and based on the trophic status indices (TSI) calculated after Carlson’s as well as Kratzer and Brezonik’s. Reclamation of the reservoir, which consisted mainly in removing the sediments, caused a reduction in all TSI values. Analysing the overall trophic level index, i.e. the average of TSI (TP), TSI (TN), and TSI (Chl), water of the Bachmaty reservoir may be classified as eutrophic in individual years of the research, although a gradual decline in the TSI value could be observed directly after the reservoir modernizing. After testing it was found that the formation of the trophic level of Bachmaty reservoir was largely affected by the amount of total phosphorus supplied to the water. Water quality in the reservoirs, and also the content of phosphorus compounds is largely determined by external supply.

Nowadays heavy metals pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems. Advances in science and technology are leading to the degradation and contamination of aquatic environments. Pollution in aquatic ecosystems poses a serious threat to aquatic biodiversity and serves health hazards in humans. The traditional methods of the environment cleaning in practice are expensive and non-eco friendly can lead to the secondary pollution. It is a reason why the aquatic plants (macrophytes) as the biological remediation methods have been used. Macrophytes play an important role in the biological methods of the water remediation because they have capability to improve the quality of water by absorbing heavy metals with their leaves and effective root systems. This review discusses the potential of different aquatic plants (macrophytes) in purifying water and wastewater.

Opis:
The paper presents fundamentals of a simple physicochemical method (SPMD) and analysis of results obtained when the method was applied for detection of organic contaminations (surface-active substances SAS) in samples of environmental and industrial waters. The method is based on measurements of variations of air bubble local velocities, which can be significantly changed in presence of surface-active contaminants. Lowering of the bubble velocity is a consequence of a motion induced dynamic adsorption layer (DAL) formed over surface of the rising bubble. The DAL formation retards the surface fluidity and the bubble rising velocity can be lowered by over 50% when the bubble surface is completely immobilized. We showed that the SPMD is a very sensitive tool (detection limit even below 1 ppm) for detection of various kinds of surface-active substances (ionic, non-ionic) in water samples. On the basis of results obtained using precise laboratory set-up, an accuracy of the SPMD is discussed. Moreover, effect of inert electrolyte addition on the bubble velocity lowering and value of detection limit of the SPMD is discussed. Simple approach, enabling quantitative analysis of the surface-active contaminants in samples collected, based on “equivalent concentrations” determination, is proposed. Results obtained for industrial (Jankowice and Knurow coal processing plants, Jaslo Refinery channel) and environmental waters (Wisloka and Ropa river) are used for detailed analysis and critical discussion of advantages and limitations of the SPMD.

Oil-containing wastewaters are regarded as main industrial pollutants of soil and water environments. They can occur as free-floating oil, unstable or stable oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions, and in the case of extreme organic load, as water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions. In this study two types of oily effluents, a typical O/W emulsion marked as E1 and a W/O emulsion E2, both discharged by local metal processing plants were examined to test their toxicity to microbial communities and the ability to serve as nutrient sources for bacterial growth. The organic contaminant load of the samples was evaluated on the basis of chemical oxygen demand (COD) parameter values and was equal to 48 200 mg O2dm-3 and >300 000 mg O2dm-3 for E1 and E2, respectively. Both emulsions proved to be non toxic to bacterial communities and were shown to contain biodiverse autochthonous microflora consisting of several bacterial strains adapted to the presence of xenobiotics (the total of 1.36 106 CFU cm-3 and 1.72 105 CFU cm-3 was determined for E1 and E2, respectively). These indigenous bacteria as well as exogenously inoculated specialized allochthonous microorganisms were biostimulated so as to proliferate within the wastewater environment whose organic content served as the only source of carbon. The most favorable cultivation conditions were determined as fully aerobic growth at the temperature of 25 ºC. In 9 to 18 day-tests, autochthonous as well as bioaugmented allochthonous bacterial population dynamics were monitored. For both emulsions tested there was a dramatic increase (up to three orders of magnitude) in bacterial frequency, as compared to the respective initial values. The resultant high biomass densities suggest that the effluents are susceptible to bioremediation. A preliminary xenobiotic biodegradation test confirmed that mixed auto- and allochthonous bacterial consortia obtained upon inoculation of the samples with microbiocenoses preselected for efficient hydrocarbon biodegradation led to a decrease in the organic pollution level.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical produced in large quantities for use primarily in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. As an endocrine disrupting compound, it has been included in the list of substances requiring special supervision as a very high-risk substance due to its toxic influence on reproduction. BPA with a reference value of 0.01 μg/L was included in the Drinking Water Directive revision (DWD 2018). This paper presents the results of preliminary studies aimed at identifying the occurrence of BPA in different types of water, i.a. groundwater captured with house wells or flowing wells in a selected location in southern Poland. These waters are commonly used as a source of water intended for human consumption and their quality is not regularly controlled. Additional tests were carried out for surface water, as well as water from springs used for drinking purposes. The authors also analysed tap water from various sources, i.e. surface and groundwater, as the final product of the drinking water production cycle. The results indicate the presence of BPA in water and the necessity of a detailed study on the risk of the BPA occurring in groundwater, especially in domestic wells.

Effects of the stored dust-like zinc and iron containing wastes of the mining and processing industry consist of the loss of valuable components and environmental pollution. Thus, the goals of the research were to analyse ecological conditions under the technogenic impact at the waste storage site and to study transformations of the stored dust-like zinc and iron containing wastes in the active supergene zone. Materials are based on the physical laboratory-modelled infiltration of the atmospheric precipitation waters through the zinc and iron containing wastes. Methods include systematically- structured analysis of wastes and disposal site and laboratory techniques (X-ray fluorescence and atomic emission spectrometry). On the basis of laboratory research and field observations of the environmental components in the impact area of the storage of dust-like zinc and iron containing wastes, the article describes regularities of formation of hydrogeochemical halos of contamination by heavy metals and iron. The results also include the description of changes in physico-chemical groundwater composition under the storage area.
