Opis:
The aim of the paper is to assess the condition of commercial banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange after the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. The consolidated results for Q1 and Q2 2020 were used focusing on selected evaluation areas such as: capital adequacy, profitability, liquidity, credit portfolio quality as well as operational efficiency. The authors concluded that as a result of the credit crunch and the retention of previously earned profits, almost every medium (except for mBank SA) and every large bank experienced an increase in capital adequacy ratios. Moreover, the profitability of the banking sector eroded in each group of banks, with the rule that ROE is higher in the group of medium and large banks compared to the small ones. With the exception of Idea Bank SA all banks during the pandemic experienced an improvement in liquidity ratios. There was reported an increase in the cost of risk, with the greatest augmentation in small banks. It is maintained that the larger the bank the lower cost of risk. In almost every institution, the risk is mitigated by an increase in the degree of coverage by provisions for impaired receivables. In small banks there was noticed a deterioration in operational efficiency. In medium and large banks, despite a sharp drop in profits and additional costs associated with the pandemic, the process of efficiency improvement was reinforced.

Opis:
The article presents the evaluation of the financial situation of commercial banks in Poland. The ratio analysis shows that the biggest variations between analyzed units were in productivity of tangible fixed assets, share of non-performing loans and overall liquidity. The financial indicators constituted the basis for the process of grouping banks into clusters of similar financial standing. The use of Ward method enabled us to differentiate five clusters. The most profitable banks belong to the first cluster, while the most productive ones are from the fourth cluster. The third cluster comprises the banks with the relatively worst financial situation.

Opis:
This study examines the impact credit risk management has on the profitability of commercial banks in Nigeria. The main objective of this material is to show how credit risk parameters are related to the expected performance of commercial banks in Nigeria. Using the regression analysis, relationship was drawn between credit risk parameters (which include capital adequacy ratio and non-performing loan ratio) and the profitability ratio (return on average asset, in particular) of five big Nigerian banks. Mixed research methodology was adopted in that primary data were sourced via questionnaires and secondary data were used via annual report of selected banks. Regression analysis was used to analyse the data. The conclusion drawn from the data analysis shows that there is a strong relationship between credit risk parameters and returns of the bank implying that credit risk management has a strong impact on the profitability of commercial banks in Nigeria. The study recommends that banks’ capital should be matched with their total risk exposure and if there is an imbalance, new capital requirements are necessary. Insider-related interests in loan applications should be closely monitored by the regulators to ensure continuous performance of the loan facility. Also, there should be an extant profiling of loan defaulters whether individuals or corporate entities.

Opis:
From 2008 to 2019, this research examines the effect of equity capital on the profitability of 24 Vietnamese commercial banks. The research findings indicate that, when ROAA and ROAE are used to measure the bank’s profit, the equity capital ratio (CAP) has a statistically significant positive effect on the ROAA while having a negative effect on the ROAE. Between 2013 and 2019, the CAP variable has a positive effect on the ROAA and ROAE, indicating that banks with a larger equity capital ratio achieved higher profitability. Furthermore, the deposits-to-assets ratio (DTA) and loan-loss reserves ratio (LLR) both have a negative effect on both proxies for bank profitability, although bank size (SIZE) has a negligible effect on bank profits in the majority of circumstances. Additionally, the rate of GDP growth and inflation (INF) have a beneficial effect on the bank’s profitability. The study’s objective is to present some critical policy implications for bank executives about the importance of adequate equity capital for the bank’s sustainability development.

Opis:
Aim:The objective of this paper is to make comparative analysis on operational efficiency between Chinese and Indian commercial banks (CBs).   Design / Research methods: Following the previous scholars’ study, two models with different sets of input and output variables have been used to show how efficiency scores vary with change in inputs and outputs. The efficiency scores are measured by using data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach.   Conclusions / findings: The mean technical efficiency score of Chinese CBs is always relatively higher than the corresponding score of Indian CBs in 2012-2013, respectively. In terms of technical efficiency and pure technical efficiency, the performance of foreign banks in China is always relatively lower than that of foreign banks in India.   Originality / value of the article: While many similar studies have evaluated the performance of banking industries in different countries, very few studies have evaluated the performance of banking sectors between Chinese and Indian economies. The paper would be of interest for OR scholars and practitioners in financial industry.  Implications of the research (if applicable): The next step of this study could collect more samples and use Malmquist index method to conduct further study on efficiency, efficiency changing and productivity, in order to conduct further competitive power analysis on both of banking industries of China and India.

Panel corrected standard errors (PCSE).
Opis:
This paper analyzes the determinants of banks’ net interest margins in Honduras during the years 1998 to 2013 – a period characterized by increasing banks’ net interest margins, foreign bank participation and consolidation. In line with findings in the previous literature, we find that operating costs are the most important drivers of banks’ net interest margins. We also find that competition among banks has led to higher concentration and that funding by parent banks positively impacts foreign banks’ net interest margins. Together, these results suggest that banks, particularly foreign banks, are under pressure to consolidate and reduce operating costs in order to offer competitive interest margins. We conclude that further structural reforms and consolidation may lower banks’ net interest margins.

Warsaw Stock Exchange
COVID-19
Opis:
Research background: The paper focuses on the research of investors' decisions with regard to shares of all 12 banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange during the first half of 2020. It examines the behavior of a subindex reflecting bank shares' prices against the main WIG index WIG and 14 sector subindices. The authors identify groups of banks with different investors? responses. They also classify banks into separate groups on the basis of changes in the fundamental indicators describing their economic and financial performance. The study concentrates mainly on the verification of the stability of this attribution, explaining reasons for its modifications over time.    Purpose of the article: To identify the characteristics of bank clusters determining different capital market responses to their listed shares and to explain the reasons for volatility in investors' behavior within the analyzed period. Methods: The methodology of the research can be described in three areas. The first is the statistical analysis with the emphasis on the use of a quarter range to capture changes in the volatility of share prices. The second area is the clustering k-means method based on the interpolated - from quarterly to daily - measures of the bank's financial condition. This mathematical approach is a novelty in finance and economics. The last, third, area is forecasting with the use of linear regression analysis, which is the key factor in determining the abnormal rates of return. The indicated areas are combined through a generally understood correlation analysis. Findings & value added: Large retail banks have been less affected compared to medium-sized ones with relatively rich corporate portfolios. The initial market reaction reflected concern about the resistance to the crisis of poorly capitalized banks with mean liquidity buffers. Upon the announcement of government support, investors' approach to the shares of banks of differentiated economic and financial performance conformed accordingly. These findings are valuable in the long term especially from the perspective of supervision authorities' policy during external shocks. The presented study suggests designing flexible and tailor-made regulatory approach aligned with the defined bank clusters. Its value added also consists in proposing a new method of analysis, combining interpolation and automatic clustering, which has proved to be adequate for the study of a bank's financial condition based on daily frequency data. Furthermore, assuming the same length of the estimation window, a close relationship is shown between the results of clustering and the forecasts based on different measures of rates of return.

Opis:
Technical innovations in Digital Era provide the incentives for banks to redesign their business operations to enhance their competitiveness. Prior studies use financial indicator as factors that affect bank competitiveness, however, with the technology advancement, Information Communication Technology (ICT) become major factors in assessing banks’ competitiveness. The aim of this study is to analyze specific ICT factors, as well as financial factors, affecting bank competitiveness. This study examines all 17 commercial banks in South Korea. The ICT factors are measured by IT center operation and IT scandal released in news or mass media while the bank competitiveness is proxied by market share of each bank both in the borrowing and lending market. In addition, the study tests to retrospect financial indicators in comparison with ICT factors. Using OLS regression models, this study finds that, in the case of Korean commercial banks, ICT factors plays an importance role in bank competitiveness, however, the financial factors still have greater influences on market share than ICT factors. The implication is that banks should leverage the ICT innovation since there is a surge of ICT based non-bank financial service providers that have started to assume roles that have been traditionally played by banks. Furthermore, this study raises implications for policy makers to consider ICT security regulations in the banking market. This study contributes to the literatures by supporting the fact that the positive relationship between IT scandals and market share suggests implications to concentrated banking sectors and provides alarming with authority’s monitoring system.

Research background: A commercial bank's competitive ability is of great importance as it plays a vital role in ensuring a bank's success; hence, it is necessary to identify the factors that contribute to the development of competitive advantage of commercial banks and to shift competitive ability to a higher level. The competiveness of banks is assessed from customers' perspective, highlighting the main factors that influence them in choosing a particular bank. Purpose of the article: The paper aims to assess the determinants influencing bank's competitive ability from customers' perspective by indicating the level of their influence. The following objectives are set: to distinguish the determinants influencing commercial bank's competitive ability, to prepare a methodology for the assessment of factors, to evaluate the importance of the factors using expert evaluation method based on fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. Methods: A questionnaire was prepared for the experts in order to collect the data; fuzzy analytic hierarchy process was implemented for processing the data. Findings & Value added: The research was conducted in Latvia and Lithuania at the beginning of 2017. The results showed that the most important factor for bank's competitive ability in both - Lithuania and Latvia - is customers' trust. Reliability of the bank (both in Latvia and Lithuania) and the privileges of loyal customers (only in Latvia) have gained experts? attention as well. The proposed model of bank?s competitive ability allows to evaluate the level of bank's competitiveness effectively, which would help the bank to plan its activities successfully and attract new customers in order to take the leading position in the market.

Research background: Commercial banks could affect the stability of the whole banking system due to the way they carry out their business activities. The supervision authorities play a key role in protecting banking stability by ensuring banks´ resilience to shocks, ability to recover their position in response to crisis and ultimately the supervision authorities help prevent failure of these banks. Therefore, in recent years' researchers have been trying to define conditions that could guarantee stability of banks. Purpose of the article: This paper aims to describe the methodology used to measure banking stability, namely banking stability index (BSI) and Z-score. In the first part, we present the literature review, then we try to assess the stability in the condition of the Czech Republic and Slovakia during the period 2006-2016. Methods: The BSI is constructed according to the methodology presented by Ghosh (2011), taking into account the main components, which are described by the set of financial indicators of banks. Findings & Value added: Results showed that the average BSI in the whole sample moved from 0.20454 (in 2015) to 0.2486 (in 2007). The results according to countries have showed that the tendency of development in the Czech and Slovak banking sector was the same. At the beginning of the analyzed period, the Slovak banks were more stable compared to Czech ones. Since 2009 the situation has been different, where the Czech banks could be considered as more stable compared to Slovak ones. The tendency of development of Z-score in both countries could be considered as the same, without the 2009 year, when the Czech banks significantly strengthened their capitalization, which influenced the development of Z-score. The results of correlation analysis between Z-score and BSI pointed to the fact that there was no high correlation between these two measures, therefore it is appropriate to use both methodologies for stability evaluation.

The subject of the research presented in this paper is the efficiency of key commercial banks in Poland. The research sample includes 12 banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, which hold over 80% of the assets of the entire commercial banks sector in Poland. The research period is 2013-2018. The aim of the research was to examine whether the largest commercial banks are more efficient than the others and to determine the main reasons for the inefficiency of commercial banks. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was used as the research method. The obtained results indicate that the average efficiency is 0.903. It turns out that the largest banks are on average quite efficient and do not have much room for improvement. In the case of large banks, the average technical efficiency PE is 0.96, while in the case of pure technical efficiency PTE it is as high as 0.99. This indicates that the largest Polish banks manage their resources very efficiently.
Okres badania to lata 2013-2018.

Research background: The analysis allows to assess the impact of the industry structure of the credit portfolio on the resistance of commercial banks to the crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. It uses two independent methods to measure the impact of the pandemic on industry risk and the methodology allowing to prioritize industries in terms of potential negative effects of the crisis. Purpose of the article: The aim of the research is to assess the resilience of commercial banks operating in the Polish banking sector to the potential effects caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The diagnostic features of 13 commercial banks were selected for its implementation. Methods: Two linear ordering methods were used, namely the Hellwig method and the TOPSIS method. The following were used as the criteria for parametric assessment of the resilience of commercial banks: capital adequacy, liquidity level, profitability of business activity, share in the portfolio of exposures with recognized impairment and the resilience of the bank's credit portfolio to the risk resulting from the exposure in economic sectors. These sectors were classified according to the level of risk associated with the effects of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings & Value added: The study allows to conclude that the largest banks conducting their operations in Poland are the most resistant ones to the consequences of the pandemic. At the same time, the banks most vulnerable due to the crisis were identified. The conclusions can be used, inter alia, in the process of managing the financial system stability risk and contribute to the discussion on the impact of the pandemic on the condition of commercial banks in emerging markets.

Problems of strategic shareholders led to only slight depreciation of the banks’ securities quoted at the Warsaw Stock Exchange in the period directly after publication of the information. Investors decided that problems of parent companies were unlikely to threaten the stability of banks operating in the Polish banking sector.

Opis:
This study examined the influence of non-performing loans on Ghana commercial banks’ profitability in the 2009–2018 period. The factors that explain the NPL contain very essential information for banks. The results indicate that the effect of non-performing loans on profit-ability is not statistically significant: operating expense efficiency and return on equity, have a positive and statistically significant relationship with profitability. The sample consisted of the banking sector (commercial banks) in the 2009–2018 period. The factors include return on assets as a function of the ratio of non-performing loans, credit risk, exchange rate, inflation, unemployment, and bank size as a control variable. The estimation was done by regression using multivariate linear regression through SPSS software. The study considered limited banking indicators as determinants of non-performing loans and was limited to the specific 2009–2018 time frame. The regression results indicate that bank profitability is strongly impacted by the increase in non-performing loans. The multivariate linear regression shows that profitability has a positive insignificant influence on non-performing loans. On the other hand, operating expense efficiency and return on equity have a positive and statistically significant relationship with profitability. Hence, when the banking sector’s expenses are higher as compared to its revenue, the banks’ overall profit would be low, impacting non-performing loans of the banks. The operating expenses should therefore be maintained as low as possible.
Z drugiej strony efektywność kosztów operacyjnych i zwrot z kapitału mają dodatni i statystycznie istotny związek z rentownością.
