Opis:
The great-circle is the shortest distance between two points on the surface of the earth. When planning a ship’s sailing route (waypoints and forward speeds) for a specific voyage, the great circle route is commonly considered as a reference route, especially for ocean-crossing seaborne transport. During the planning process, the upcoming sea weather condition is one of the most important factors affecting the ship’s route optimization/planning results. To avoid encountering harsh conditions, conventional routing optimization algorithms, such as Isochrone method and Dynamic Programming method, have been developed/implemented to schedule a ship’s optimal routes by selecting waypoints around the great circle reference route based on the ship’s operational performances at sea. Due to large uncertainties in sea weather forecast that used as inputs of these optimization algorithms, the optimized routes may have worse performances than the traditional great circle sailing. In addition, some shipping companies are still sailing in or making charting contracts based on the great circle routes. Therefore, in this study, a new optimization algorithm is proposed to consider the voluntary speed reduction with optimal speed configuration along the great circle course. The efficiency of this method is investigated by comparing these two methods for optimal route planning with respect to ETA and minimum fuel consumption. A container ship sailing in the North Atlantic with full-scale performance measurements are employed as the case study vessels for the comparison.

We offer a novel interpretation of the argumentative role that Meditation IV plays within the whole of the Meditations. This new interpretation clarifies several otherwise head-scratching claims that Descartes makes about Meditation IV, and it fully exonerates the Fourth Meditation from either raising or exacerbating Descartes’ circularity problems.

We study the scalar difference equation $ x(k+1)=x(k)+\frac{f(x(k-N))}{N} $ where f is nonincreasing with negative feedback. This equation is a discretization of the well-studied differential delay equation $ x′(t) = f(x(t − 1)). $ We examine explicit families of such equations for which we can find, for infinitely many values of N and appropriate parameter values, various dynamical behaviors including periodic solutions with large numbers of sign changes per minimal period, solutions that do not converge to periodic solutions, and chaos. We contrast these behaviors with the dynamics of the limiting differential equation. Our primary tool is the analysis of return maps for the difference equations that are conjugate to continuous self-maps of the circle.

The problem of covering the area by circles, mathematical model of the coating offers a new coverage criteria based on which analytically describes the range of permissible solutions of the problem. Based on the analysis of the properties of the model, it is shown that the solution of the problem can be reduced to the solution of problems of nonlinear programming sequence. At the moment, there are systems of video monitoring forest land. An important class of geometric design problems is problems of irregular covering the field by geometric objects, as well as regular. In the problems of covering it is set up a claim that all points of the field were covered by geometric objects, while the conditions of non-intersection of objects between themselves and their placement in the field may be violated. One problem with the design of terrestrial video monitoring systems is to optimize the placement of observation points. optimal placement of towers problem can be formulated as a coating task. An approach to the placement of towers terrestrial video monitoring of forest fires, the main stage of which is set forth search method local extremum in the problem coverage area circles of varying radius. This paper is devoted to the discussion of the exponential stability of a networked hyperbolic system with a circle. Our analysis extends an example by Bastin and Coron about the limits of boundary stabilizability of hyperbolic systems to the case of a networked system that is defined on a graph which contains a cycle. By spectral analysis, we prove that the system is stabilizable while the length of the arcs is sufficiently small. However, if the length of the arcs is too large, the system is not stabilizable. Our results are robust with respect to small perturbations of the arc lengths. Complementing our analysis, we provide numerical simulations that illustrate our findings.

In this paper we study graphs defined by pattern-avoiding words. Word-representable graphs have been studied extensively following their introduction in 2004 and are the subject of a book published by Kitaev and Lozin in 2015. Recently there has been interest in studying graphs represented by pattern-avoiding words. In particular, in 2016, Gao, Kitaev, and Zhang investigated 132-representable graphs, that is, word-representable graphs that can be represented by a word which avoids the pattern 132. They proved that all 132-representable graphs are circle graphs and provided examples and properties of 132-representable graphs. They posed several questions, some of which we answer in this paper. One of our main results is that not all circle graphs are 132-representable, thus proving that 132-representable graphs are a proper subset of circle graphs, a question that was left open in the paper by Gao et al. We show that 123-representable graphs are also a proper subset of circle graphs, and are different from 132-representable graphs. We also study graphs represented by pattern-avoiding 2-uniform words, that is, words in which every letter appears exactly twice.

The aim of this paper is to present and analyse the views on logic of the members of the so-called Cracow Circle, namely the Dominican Father Józef (Innocenty) M. Bocheński, Rev. Jan Salamucha, and Jan Franciszek Drewnowski. They tried to apply the methods of modern formal/mathematical logic to philosophical and theological problems. In particular, they attempted to modernise contemporary Thomism (the trend which was then prevailing) by employing logical tools. The influence of Jan Łukasiewicz, the co-founder of the Warsaw School of Logic will be also discussed.

Logical positivists claim that the whole of human knowledge can be reduced to analytic and synthetic sentences, and this means that the only possible knowledge is provided by science. Metaphysics is thus meaningless, because its sentences do not comply with the rules set forth by logical analysis of language. What, then, is the philosopher’s job? The members of the Vienna Circle answer that his task is to clarify the concepts used within empirical and formal sciences, while analytic philosophers stress instead the importance of ordinary language’s analysis. But the outcome is in both cases clear: philosophy is linguistic analysis. Howeber, by reducing the whole of reality to empirical reality, logical positivists do metaphysics. We do not have the “elimination” of metaphysics, but just the proposal of an empiricist brand of metaphysics.

In the paper the authors attempt to present the computational problem related to the navigational algorithm (meridian arc formula) implemented in the software applied in marine navigation electronic devices and systems, such as GNSS (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo), AIS, ECDIS/ECS, and other marine GIS. From the early days of the development of the basic navigational software built into satellite navigational receivers, it has been noted that for the sake of simplicity and a number of other reasons, this navigational software is often based on the simple methods of limited accuracy. It is surprising that even nowadays the use of navigational software is still used in a loose manner, sometimes ignoring basic computational principles and adopting oversimplified assumptions and errors such as the wrong combination of spherical and ellipsoidal calculations in different steps of the solution of a particular sailing problem. The lack of official standardization on both the ‘accuracy required’ and the equivalent ‘methods employed’, in conjunction to the ‘black box solutions’ provided by GNSS navigational receivers and navigational systems (ECDIS and ECS) suggest the necessity of a thorough examination of the issue of sailing calculations for navigational systems and GNSS receivers.
