Opis:
The article describes the participation of youth from Lesser Poland and Cieszyn Silesia in the fight for the Cieszyn Region and in Silesian Uprisings in the years 1919–1921. Already in November 1918, Polish youth joined Polish military formations in Cieszyn Silesia, and then in January 1919 they took part in the fights with the Czechs for these lands. Later, together with young people from other regions of Lesser Poland, they took part in the fight for Lviv. Subsequent Silesian uprisings were supported by young inhabitants of the whole of Lesser Poland, both through participation in the propaganda campaign, as well as in bloody fights and guard duty at the border. A number of them died, and their heroic deeds are evidenced by the battle decorations awarded to them. Faithful to the idea of fighting for independence, they took part in taking over power in the Polish lands, and then joined the ranks of defenders of these lands in large numbers and contributed to shaping the borders of the Second Polish Republic.

Opis:
There are certain places throughout the world where ecumenical movements are born and have arisen out of the very essence the sociocultural realities of these places. The Cieszyn region of Silesia is such a place. In Cieszyn, different nationalities, cultures, and religions converge because the region both literally and symbolically contains many borders. Many Christian denominations peacefully coexist within Cieszyn, which is home to the largest community of Lutherans in Poland. The ecumenical movement within Cieszyn arose as a necessary and inevitable consequence of the coexistence of these Churches. For this reason, the Cieszyn region of Silesia is a perfect example of contemporary trends that are occurring within the ecumenical movement. Ecumenism in the Cieszyn region of Silesia has a very long and rich history that began more than five centuries ago, meaning long before the Second Vatican Council issued the Decree on Ecumenism Unitatis Redintegratio. Two Christian denominations—Roman Catholic and Lutheran—have coexisted in Cieszyn Silesia and, therefore, have become a symbol of an ecumenism based on faith and tolerance as well as survival and respect. Each of these represent the modern understanding of ecumenism today. The ecumenical movement can serve as a solid foundation that strengthens a sense of unity within local communities that share the same cultural and Christian roots so that these communities can achieve a common goal: to build a civilization of love, peace, and justice. Based on the examples of ecumenical relationships at work provided in this article, it is possible to say that the wise of “today” look back on “yesterday” in order to build a better “tomorrow.” Therefore, it is safe to assert that an ecumenism well-lived in the present that is also firmly rooted in history is a source of hope for the future of Christian Churches and communities. When presenting how the multi-denominational population of Cieszyn Silesia received the Decree on Ecumenism Unitatis Redintegratio, a statement made by one of the most eminent Polish ecumenists, Father Prof. Wacław Hryniewicz, comes to mind: “An authentic reception can be achieved only when the partners differ from each other, because diversity enables the true relationship between giving and taking.”

There are places where the ecumenical movement is born and grows out of the very essence of social and cultural reality. Cieszyn Silesia belongs to one of such places. Situated on the meeting point of various nationalities, cultures, and Churches, it constitutes a border region in a literal and symbolic sense. This region has become the home for the largest population of the Lutherans in Poland. The ecumenical movement which has been born and developed here is a necessary and inevitable consequence of such coexistence of Churches — the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran. Both Churches have become symbols of ecumenical life based on faith, tolerance, experience and respect. Nowadays all of these factors create a modern ecumenism. Ecumenism in Cieszyn Silesia has a very long and rich history. The phenomenon of Churches’ coexistence appeared almost five centuries ago. It means that the ecumenical movement had existed here long before the Catholic Church promulgated the encyclical Ut unum sint. On the basis of the examples of the ecumenical relationships mentioned in the article, it can be said that the look of the “wise” today at its “yesterday” helps to build a better “tomorrow”. Therefore it can be said that on the basis of a well-lived present, firmly rooted in history, rises a favourable hope for the future of the Church. Presenting the reception of John Paul’s II Ut unum sint among the multi-denominational population of Cieszyn Silesia one could quote Reverend Professor Wacław Hryniewicz, one of the most remarkable Polish ecumenists: “An authentic reception can be achieved only when the partners differ from each other because diversity enables the true relation of giving and taking.”

Opis:
In Cieszyn Silesia (the eastern part of the crownland of Austrian Silesia) from the time local government was introduced in 1864 until 1918 it is possible to identify 1332 village mayors (German: Gemeindevorsteher; Polish: wójt; Czech: starosta). Of these, at least 1006 (almost 76 per cent) had another village mayor in Cieszyn Silesia in their ‘kindred circle’, which includes second-degree relatives according to canonical computation, as well as witnesses at weddings and baptisms of their closest family (children, parents, siblings). The uninterrupted lineage of these types of relationships connected at least 875 village mayors, or 66 per cent of all those known. Thus the partial democratisation at the level of local self-government led to a kind of oligarchy, with the position of the village head being assumed by wealthy peasant families who all had connections to one another. Outside of the ‘kindred circle’, there were the factory owners and officials of archdukes and counts, who took the position of village mayor in industrialised areas, as well as a few Jewish village mayors and probably the majority of village mayors from the mountain villages. The question examined here is whether the situation looked similar in other parts of the Habsburg monarchy, or whether Cieszyn Silesia stood out in this respect. This question remains unanswered due to the lack of analogous studies on village mayors.

Opis:
As part of the modernisation process, the authorities of major European countries ascribed to teachers of people’s schools the role of educating the lower strata of society (inhabitants of villages, manual workers, etc.). Similarly, they put this professional group in charge of the realisation of the hidden purpose of state education: shaping subjects so that they would accept the social and political order. Given their required education and the social tasks they undertook, it was assumed folk teachers would be associated with opinion-forming groups and the intelligentsia. However, in fact, for a long time, they were denied belonging to either of these groups. During the long nineteenth century, they had to struggle with a negative reception of their efforts in those circles in which the school and the teacher were perceived as unnecessary institutions. In most regions of Central Europe, for example in Austrian Silesia, thanks to the improvements of the professional competencies of the teachers and their dedication in fulfilling their obligations, both at school and outside it, the teachers and their organisations were successful in changing this perception of them. They were also actively involved in the political activities of various national camps. Nevertheless, in most official institutions, they were not the ones making the most important decisions concerning elementary education. At the same time, however, without their cooperation, none of the educational and social plans would have been implemented in practice. Thanks to their participation in the public life of local communities, especially rural ones, over time they became the new opinion-formers, playing the role of an intelligentsia that works among the people. They were not only elementary education specialists, but also pedagogues, activity-inspirers for the adult inhabitants, and experts in dealing with all kinds of situations and emergency issues.

In the discussion of communication in management studies, more and more attention is being given to research on an image of a product as well as a brand of an institution. In times when the value of great corporations is mainly based on well promoted and maintained brands, any activity without care of reputation is unimaginable. This rule also applies to cities, communes or regions. Image is currently of strategic significance for these subjects. It can be stated that there is a type of relationship. When an image of a certain region is positive, achievement of complex goals is easier. Therefore, when the region fulfils its goals, it is easier to gain respect of current and potential citizens, tourists, and investors. Thus, a positive image is one of the greatest advantages that a region can have, as it is directly transferred into social and economic development. In the article, on the basis of the literature of the subject, the process of creating an image of a region is presented.According to the survey conducted among Polish and Czech respondents related to Euroregion Beskydy and Euroregion Cieszyn Silesia, by place of residence, workplace or place of education image of the regions appeared to be one of the most distinguishing of their features.

Identity is created throughout the whole life of a person, however, after sixties self-perceptions undergoes significant metamorphosis. At the stage of development, a human being searches for contacts with another person, finds aspects in common, things which may connect, and uniqueness and otherness of a person are moved to the background. The research and deliberating about the issue of identity creation are based on distinguishing aspects whichare identical and those which are different. The study is a statement of a research conducted in Cieszyn and Czech Cieszyn – the southern part of Polish – Czech borderline. Quantity and quality strategies were used as complimentary ones. The aim of deliberating was to know the sense of identity among people in their late adulthood who reside Polish and Czech parts of Cieszyn Silesia. The results of research conducted allow to notice similarities and differences in sense of identity declarations amongpeople in their late adulthood who live in Cieszyn and Czech Cieszyn. Identity creation is a long-term process, time-consuming, contemplative, with elements of inner retrospection. People in their late adulthood develop their sense of identity against the background of differenced which are noticed in their childhood, adolescence, youth, and adulthood.
Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań pozwalają dostrzec podobieństwa i różnice w deklaracjach poczucia tożsamości osób w wieku późnej dorosłości żyjących w Cieszynie oraz Czeskim Cieszynie.

Zaprezentowane wyniki badań wskazują, że zaszczepione w jednostce w okresie dzieciństwa dobre praktyki edukacyjne owocują w życiu dorosłym i w starości.
The following study depicts a relation between school and identity of people in their late adulthood, who live in the Polish and Czech part of Cieszyn Silesia. The author shows education as the only way to personal development. The results presented point the fact that if positive educational habits are implemented when a person is young, they benefit in adulthood and elderly age. The following study is to present research results conducted in Cieszyn and Czech Cieszyn in 2013. Quality and quantity strategy were used and they were complementary. A questionnaire, interview and quality data analysis were chosen as the research tools. The results confirm that positive attitudes enhancing life-long learning are created in primary education and further. According to elderly, school and pedagogical staff were significant in creating their identity. For the elderly continuing education means gaining new skills, qualifications, deepening interests, what is even more important it is the way of self-expression and own identity creation.

The Cieszyn folk costume, also referred to as the Silesian or the Valachian costume, is an important element of the cultural heritage of Cieszyn Silesia. It has been analysed in many academic and popular publications, both in terms of its material aspect and its role within the society. Thus far, however, authors focused on the region of Cieszyn Silesia in its historical borders, while in the early 20th century the Cieszyn folk costume could also be seen in what is now the Bestwina, Wilamowice and Brzeszcze communes, historically belonging to the region of Lesser Poland. Nowadays, it is worn for church ceremonies, as well as by members of folk dance and song ensembles and Rural Housewives Associations from the area. In some localities, there have been initiatives to replace the Cieszyn folk costume with others, e.g. the so-called lachowski (Lachy) attire, which used to be worn in the region and is associated with the cultural heritage of western Lesser Poland. The aim of this article is to analyse the various attitudes towards the Cieszyn folk costume as part of the heritage of western Lesser Poland. Some see it as a source of pride, others, as unwanted heritage. The analysis is based on interviews with local activists coupled with field observation and examination of photographic documentation available on the Internet.

He is a member of a Polish minority and he has aimed his literary output at its members and at readers in Poland. Translations into the Czech language are aimed at readers in the Czech Republic. Having made a protest against the intervention of the Warsaw Pact armies into Czechoslovakia in August 1968, W. Przeczek was not allowed to publish and he was dismissed – he had worked as an editor of a Polish paper “Głos Ludu”. In 1970–1977 he worked as an actor, stage director, and dramatic advisor of a puppet show theatre Bajka in Český Těšín, the Czech Republic. In his article, the author deals with poems by W. One of the important factors binding an ethnic group is a language. From this point of view, it has to be stressed that in the territory of the historic Duchy of Teschen we have recorded the presence of members of Polish, Czech and German, and – to a lesser extent – Jewish, Slovak, Ruthenian and Wallachian nationalities. The political history of this region was unusually disruptive – change of citizenship was typical and, as a result, spoken and official language changed as well. Over the centuries, Latin, German, Czech and Polish have been used as official languages. Regarding the current usage of standard language varieties, the formal Czech, Polish and – to a lesser extend – Slovak are used. As far as dialects are concerned this group belongs of the southern subgroup of Silesian dialects, the majority of which are located in the polish territory. The dialect is used by the local inhabitants of both Polish and Czech nationalities. Apart from dialect, other language forms used are standard Czech (it is a compulsory class in Polish-language schools), standard Polish as a code of pedagogical communication in local Polish schools, the language of Polish minority magazines; Polish plays on the Polish stage of the Těšín Theater are also shown in Polish language. Polish is used at the events organized by Polish organizations and Polish church services. The Těšín Silesian dialect is probably the most widespread communication code and performs the function of natural, commonly spoken language. Its usage is not determined by age or ethnicity. Generally speaking, the inhabitants of the area are bilingual and, depending on the communication situation, choose the appropriate language code. However, the ethnic identity cannot be derived only from language usage, although language identity is one of its important elements. In the past the inhabitants of Czech Těšín region felt the need similar to that of other inhabitants of other border regions with multi-ethnic, multicultural and multilingual character – the necessity for self-identification. Nowadays, the situation is different – the Czech majority does not feel the need to emphasize its ethnicity, and Polish minority, thanks to Polish schools, organizations, democratization processes and participation in Polish cultural life, declares Polish nationality, but stresses its specific region origin.
