Opis:
The cone penetration test is one of the most widely used methods in land and marine geotechnical site investigations. CPTU allows for a determination of in-situ geotechnical properties of soils, and recognizing soil stratigraphy. This article provides an overview of the CPTU testing equipment that is used for seabed investigation in the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone. It is largely based on experience gained while performing and supervising the tests. The authors describe the proper procedure of testing, and provide detailed information on preparation of the equipment (calibration, placing CPTU unit on seabed).

Opis:
The river erosion is a complex process, the dynamics of which is very difficult to predict. Its intensity largely depends on hydraulic conditions of the river channel. However, it is also thought that natural resistance of the subsoil has a great influence on the scale of the erosion process. Predicting the effects of this process is extremely important in the case of constructing a piling structure (for example, artificial reservoirs). The partition of the river channel causes significant lowering of the river channel bed downstream the dam which threatens the stability of hydro technical and engineering (bridges) buildings. To stop this unwanted phenomenon, stabilizing thresholds are built. However, random location of thresholds significantly reduces their effectiveness. Therefore, taking under consideration natural geotechnical conditions of the subsoil appears to be extremely important. In the light of the current development of in-situ tests in geotechnics, an attempt to use results from these tests to predict the bed erosion rate was made. The analysis includes results from CPTU and DPL tests, which were carried out in the Warta River valley downstream the Jeziorsko reservoir. In the paper, the general diagrams for the procedure of obtaining and processing the data are shown. As a result, the author presents two multidimensional bed erosion rate models built based on hydraulic data and results from CPTU or DPL tests. These models allow taking more effective actions, leading to the neutralization of the effects of the intensive bed erosion process.

This paper shows an example of the grouping of piezocone penetration test (CPTU) characteristics using functional data analysis, together with the results of clustering, in the form of a subsoil rigidity model. The subsoil rigidity model was constructed based on layer separation using the proposed method, as well as the k-means method. In the construction of the subsoil rigidity model, the constrained modulus M was applied. These moduli were determined from empirical relationships for overconsolidated and normally consolidated soils from Poland based on cone tip resistance.

Opis:
The article concentrates on the identification of geotechnical parameters of alluvial soil represented by silts found near Poznań and Elbląg. Strength and deformation parameters of the subsoil tested were identified by the CPTU (static penetration) and SDMT (dilatometric) methods, as well as by the vane test (VT). Geotechnical parameters of the subsoil were analysed with a view to using the soil as an earth construction material and as a foundation for buildings constructed on the grounds tested. The article includes an analysis of the overconsolidation process of the soil tested and a formula for the identification of the overconsolidation ratio OCR. Equation 9 reflects the relation between the undrained shear strength and plasticity of the silts analyzed and the OCR value. The analysis resulted in the determination of the Nkt coefficient, which might be used to identify the undrained shear strength of both sediments tested. On the basis of a detailed analysis of changes in terms of the constrained oedometric modulus M0, the relations between the said modulus, the liquidity index and the OCR value were identified. Mayne’s formula (1995) was used to determine the M0 modulus from the CPTU test. The usefullness of the sediments found near Poznań as an earth construction material was analysed after their structure had been destroyed and compacted with a Proctor apparatus. In cases of samples characterised by different water content and soil particle density, the analysis of changes in terms of cohesion and the internal friction angle proved that these parameters are influenced by the soil phase composition (Fig. 18 and 19). On the basis of the tests, it was concluded that the most desirable shear strength parameters are achieved when the silt is compacted below the optimum water content.

Opis:
The paper deals with the methodology of performing and interpretation of seismic cone penetration test (SCPT). This type of test is used to determine velocity of the seismic wave in the soil medium. This study is focused on shear wave. The wave is triggered on the ground surface by hitting an anvil with a sledgehammer. Then, vibrations induced at different depths are measured. Based on recorded measurements wave velocity (Vs) and thus also small strain shear modulus Gmax may be calculated. An interpretation of exemplary seismic test results is presented. Crossover and cross-correlation methods are discussed and another, more adequate one is featured and then applied in the interpretation example. Conditions for correct test performance and interpretation are discussed.

Opis:
This article contains the analysis of the correlation between the cone resistance qc from CPTU tests and shear modulus G0 determined from seismic tests SDMT and SCPTU. The analysis was performed for sands located in Poland, characterised by differential grain size distribution and origin. The significant impact of the independent variables; grain size, preconsolidation stress σ’p, geostatic vertical stress σ’v0 and relative density index on the dependencies analysed, were examined in three stages. Firstly, a general relationship between the cone resistance and shear modulus G0 was established; in the second stage, an analysis was carried out in selected groups of subsoil; and in the third stage, the influence of other independent variables was taken into account. In each stage, the functional form of the dependency was determined, and their statistical significance was assessed throughout coefficient of determination R2. For more variables, multivariable regression analysis was applied for assessment. Conducted analysis showed that the overall view of the relation between the cone resistance qc and shear modulus G0 has low evaluation of the statistical significance. This fact is consistent with the theoretical assessment of this relationship. To obtain a satisfactory assessment of this dependency, it is necessary to construct empirical equations for individual groups of soil, taking into account other independent variables; preconsolidation stress σ’p, vertical stress σ’vo and relative density index. This approach allows to assess the local correlation relationship, which is very useful during the geological project.

Stress state and stress history of subsoil under the flood embankment was evaluated with CPTU and DMT tests. The CPTU dissipation tests in soft soils under the central part of the embankment and on the upstream and downstream sides were performed. The shape of pore water dissipation curve reflects stress state and stress history. Monotonic decay of water pore pressure was found for normally consolidated soils. Dilatory pore pressure response is typical for overconsolidated soils. Methods for the flow characteristics determination (coefficient of consolidation and hydraulic conductivity) were presented.

Opis:
The paper deals with application of CPTu test results for the probabilistic modeling of dumping grounds. The statistical measures use results from 42 CPT test points located in the lignite mine dumping ground from the region of Central Europe. Both the tip resistance qc as well as local friction fs are tested. Based on the mean values and standard deviations of measured quantities the specific zones in the dumping site profile are distinguished. For three main zones standard deviations of linearly de-trended functions, distributions of normalized de-trended values for qc and fs are examined. Also the vertical scales of fluctuation for both measured quantities are estimated. The obtained result shows that lignite mine dumping site can be successfully described with the Random Field Theory. Additional use of fs values introduces supplementary statistical information.

Opis:
This article presents the results of laboratory tests on soft, normally consolidated soils from the Vistula Marshlands. Samples of high-plasticity organic soils (muds) taken from 3.2–4.0 m and 9.5–10.0 m depth, as well as peat deposit at 14.0 m, are analysed. Presented case study confirms the applicability of the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) method based on Cone Penetration Tests (CPTU) and allows for a conservative estimation of effective friction angle for muds. The plastification angle equal to 14.5° for organic silt, applied in the modified NTH method, fits well the triaxial test (TX) results. Moreover, the dilative-contractive behaviour according to the CPTU soil classification based on the Robertson’s proposal from 2016 corresponds well with volumetric changes observed in the consolidated drained triaxial compression tests. The internal friction angles of the Vistula Marshlands' muds and peats are lower in comparison with the database of similar soft soils.

Vibroflotation, vibratory compaction, micro-blasting or heavy tamping are typical improvement methods for the cohesionless deposits of high thickness. The complex mechanism of deep soil compaction is related to void ratio decrease with grain rear-rangements, lateral stress increase, prestressing effect of certain number of load cycles, water pressure dissipation, aging and other effects. Calibration chamber based interpretation of CPTU/DMT can be used to take into account vertical and horizontal stress and void ratio effects. Some examples of interpretation of soundings in pre-treated and compacted sands are given. Some acceptance criteria for compaction control are discussed. The improvement factors are analysed including the normalised approach based on the soil behaviour type index.

The main subject of the paper is the practical application of the existing geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering techniques for the purpose of ground characterisation in landslide areas. Special interest is given to the landslide issues in difficult geotechnical and geological conditions and evaluation of soil design parameters by in situ tests. In the paper, usage of CPTU connected with reference laboratory tests, GPR and other monitoring techniques in landslide and potential landslide areas are presented. Research was based on investigations in Polish opencast mines, Carpathian flysch sediments and Norwegian clays. Presented data are based on the exemplar landslide projects. The background of presented CPTU studies is slope stability evaluations of the Polish opencast brown coal mines undertaken during a research stay at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) with support of the Norwegian Research Council and NATO Advanced Fellowship Programme. Landslide investigations by GPR and GPS technique were performed on Carpathian flysch sediments in Lachowice and Wapienne (Poland).

The lithology, structure and geophysical characteristics of the glaciolacustrine clays deposited in the Wierzchowo proglacial lake were determined using static penetration tests (CPTU) in combination with standard lithological measurements. The deposits are divided into four lithological units (R1 to R4) on the basis of overconsolidation. Units R3 and R4 are separated by mass-flow deposits. The depositional conditions history of the lake result represent four phases: (1) an initial (low-energy) phase with the deposition of the rhythmically laminated sediments of units R1 and R2, which are divided by an erosional interval; (2) a phase of non-deposition with some desiccation structures and extended consolidation of sediments; (3) the main phase characterised by deposition of the rhythmically laminated sediments of unit R3; and finally, (4) the youngest phase, which represents alternations of deposition and erosion. The results show that sedimentation in the Wierzchowo proglacial lake was less continuous, and that the depositional processes were more complex than in the neighboring Złocieniec glacial lake.

Opis:
Soil field testing performed with the static method of CPT/CPTU is increasingly being used in Poland to examine the ground for the purposes of foundation design. The results of this test may be used directly in the calculations of foundation piles, but also of spread foundations. The use of a static test becomes problematic when coarse soils (sandy gravels, gravels) are found in the subsoil. In these situations a dynamic probing may be performed to supplement the results of CPT in the soil strata where the CPT examination is impossible. This requires the development of appropriate correlation between the soil parameters obtained in static (qc) and dynamic tests (qd). This paper presents an analysis of the results of field tests conducted in Kraków, Poland. Results were obtained in the test nodes, which included: cone penetration test (CPT), dynamic probing (DPH) and a borehole. The derived correlations were compared with the results of similar studies performed in Hungary and Lithuania.
Wymaga to jednak opracowania odpowiednich korelacji pomiędzy parametrami qc i qd.
