As I wrote my biography of Clement J. Zablocki, I became interested in determining who opposed Civil Rights in Milwaukee from 1958 to 1968. In 1958, a police shooting led to the beginning of Civil Rights agitation in the city. The area became a focus for Civil Rights opponents as Alabama Governor and Presidential candidate George Wallace famously campaigned for city’s Polish American votes in 1964. After a series of protests and riots in the South Side of Milwaukee in 1967, the city passed an Open Housing ordinance in the next year. That dictionary of popular wisdom, Wikipedia, explains that Milwaukee’s Polish Americans opposed Civil Rights as part of a “White Backlash.” I have decided to test that argument.

The purpose of this article is to present the problem of racially-based prejudice in the USA in the post-Civil Rights Movement era. The article is based on Danzy Senna’s critically acclaimed novel, Caucasia (1998). Being a so-called Movement Child of interracial couple, and growing up in the USA in the 1970s, Senna met with different kinds of biased thinking coming from both sides of the color line. The novel tells the story of a young, biracial girl, Birdie, and reflects Senna’s experiences. The article analyzes the different forms and levels of racial prejudice which Senna depicts in her novel to comment on the pervasiveness of the problem in the USA of the 1970s.

African American women are merely half of the Black race, and they are half of the African American history, as well. The main objective of this paper is to show how the institution of slavery influenced lives of African American women and how they are conceived by the American society. This paper is in part an attempt to address the problems of race and gender faced by African American women during the Reconstruction and Civil Rights Movement, by suggesting how those problems shifted over the course of two centuries.

The article focuses on the diversity of attitudes that Black churches presented toward the social protest of the civil rights era. Although their activity has been often perceived only through the prism of Martin Luther King’s involvement, in fact they presented many different attitudes to the civil rights campaigns. They were never unanimous about social and political engagement and their to various responses to the Civil Rights Movement were partly connected to theological divisions among them and the diversity of Black Christianity (a topic not well-researched in Poland). For years African American churches served as centers of the Black community and fulfilled many functions of ethnic churches (as well as of other ethnic institutions), but the scope of these functions varied greatly – also during the time of the Civil Rights Movement. Therefore, the main aim of this article is to analyze the whole spectrum of Black churches’ attitudes to the civil rights protests, paying special attention to the approaches and strategies that are generally less known.

The article, whose central premise is to address the ellusive issue of the Zeitgeist of the "long 1968," revolves around the appeal of the singer-songwriter activism and the international, cross-cultural popularity of protest songs that defy political borders and linguistic divides. The argument opens with reference to Bob Dylan's famous song "The Times They Are A-Changing," whose evergreen topicality resulted not only in the emergence of its numerous official and unofficial covers and reinterpretations, but also generated translations into all major languages of the world, and which has provided inspiration to engaged artists, whose present-day remakes serve as a medium of criticism of the unjust mechanisms of power affecting contemporary societies. The "spirit of the 1968," which evades clear-cut definitions attempted by cultural historians and sociologists, seems to lend itself to capturing in terms of what Beate Kutschke dubs "mental" criteria, perhaps best comprehended in the analysis of the emotional reactions to simple messages of exhortative poetry or simple protest songs, which appeal to the shared frustrations of self-organized, grassroot movements and offer them both the sense of purpose and a glimpse of hope. In this sense, the Zeitgeist of '68 is similar to that of revolutionary Romanticism that united the young engaged intellectuals on both sides of the Atlantic, and whose messages reverberate in the activist songwriters' work until today. As such, the essay provides the keynote to the whole issue, which explores some of the transnational legacies of "1969."

The article reconstructs the discourse of film criticism in Liberator – a radical African American magazine published between 1961 and 1971. Employing Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the cultural field, the author situates Liberator within the context of the 1960s, civil rights movement, and Black Arts movement, and analyses the magazine’s role in film culture of the era, as well as the links between the magazine and important black filmmakers and film writers. Four aspects of Liberator’s film criticism are explored: cultural memory of past representations, criticism of genre filmmaking, the need for cinematic realism, and the possibility of creating a distinct black cinema. The case study of the critic Clayton Riley’s career presents an author who wanted to continue his radical criticism in the mainstream press (The New York Times). Liberator’s legacy is framed as essential in understanding the tradition of African American film criticism.
Artykuł stanowi rekonstrukcję dyskursu krytyki filmowej w „Liberatorze” – radykalnym czasopiśmie afroamerykańskim wydawanym w latach 1961-1971. Posługując się teorią pola kulturowego Pierre’a Bourdieu, autor sytuuje „Liberatora” w kontekście lat 60., ruchu praw obywatelskich i ruchu Black Arts, a także analizuje rolę tego pisma w kulturze filmowej epoki oraz związki między magazynem a ważnymi czarnymi filmowcami i autorami tekstów o kinie. Omawia przy tym cztery aspekty publicystyki filmowej „Liberatora”: pamięć kulturową o dawnych reprezentacjach, krytykę kina gatunkowego, potrzebę realizmu filmowego oraz możliwość stworzenia odrębnego kina afroamerykańskiego. Autor skupia się także na przedstawieniu kariery krytyka Claytona Rileya, który chciał kontynuować radykalną publicystykę w prasie głównego nurtu („The New York Times”). Spuścizna „Liberatora” została przedstawiona jako kluczowa dla zrozumienia tradycji afroamerykańskiej krytyki filmowej.

The article was inspired by the Pontchartrain Park Pioneers Oral History Project which began in 2019. Ten Pontchartrain Park pioneers who purchased their homes in this middle class, African American community between 1955 and 1965 were interviewed. This innovative oral history project allowed the interviewees to share their unique stories of pursuing the ‘American Dream’ of home ownership, while living in a racially segregated country and city.
