Opis:
The development of the main sectors of the steelmaking industry is followed directly by the need to increase energy consumption for technological processes, which directly impact the amount of greenhouse gas emissions being emitted into the environment as carbon dioxide, which is a by-product in the combustion of fuels for energy generation purposes, being carried out in power plants supplying steelworks with electricity. Thus, it seems legitimate to search for new production technologies, which combine both, a high quality of steel products together with reduction of production costs, while increasing energy efficiency. A solution for this can be application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The article presents capability analysis to determine whether a selected steel-making process is capable of improving its efficiency by applying optimization-based technological parameter specifications with the use of computer software, working based on CFD methods, in the production cycle.
Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD). Artykuł przedstawia analizę możliwości poprawy efektywności wybranego procesu stalowniczego poprzez zastosowanie w cyklu produkcyjnym wytycznych wynikających z optymalizacji parametrów technologicznych, z wykorzystaniem oprogramowania komputerowego pracującego w oparciu o metody CFD.

Opis:
In recent years, there has been a dynamic increase in the use of multirotor flying robots in various areas of economic and social life. Robots of this kind may be used in environmental research, after equipping them with an appropriate measuring systems. This includes taking measurements of various types of contaminants, such as: particulate matter (PM), various gases, noise and light pollution. To make this possible, it is necessary to conduct advanced model-simulation tests of the flying platform, analyse and determine the appropriate location for the measurement system. Most of the current research on methods and techniques of taking measurements on the flying platform does not take into account these issues. This work consists of two main parts: modeling and simulation tests, and experimental part carried out in laboratory conditions. As part of the work, quadrocopter dynamics equations have been developed and implemented in the Matlab/Simulink environment. The developed discrete mathematical model made it possible to simulate different robot maneuvers: upward, forward, sideways and rotation flight. In order to determine the required characteristics of the multicopter drive sets, a mobile dynamometer station was designed, constructed and programmed. The dynamometer allows, among others, to take measurements of thrust force, torque and rotational speed. The final stage of the work was the development of the numerical model and CFD calculations of the quadrocopter. In this part, distributions of the pressure fields and velocity for the robot's hover state were determined.

Opis:
A fan with a cycloidal rotor (CRF) is a promising design for application in HVAC (heat, ventilation and air conditioning) systems. Despite the widespread use of the CRF design as a form of propulsion, there are practically no scientific publications examining the possibility of using it as the HVAC fan. The choice of the cycloidal rotor facilitates the operating procedure and widens the range of operating conditions. The paper focuses on the use of the CRF in HVAC, especially as a blowing machine integrated with rectangular ducts, presenting, and discussing the search for the most efficient numerical model. The way of discretizing the computational domain, the turbulence models and the time integration method were tested. A four-blade open rotor fan with a cycloidal impeller was used both in the numerical and in the experimental model. The 2D and 3D CRF models created in the Ansys CFX package were adopted. After a mesh-independence study, different turbulence models were tested for the selected mesh. In the case of the 2D model, various turbulence models such as the SST and the RNG k-ε options were tested and compared with each other. The computational fluid dynamics simulations were compared with in-house experimental results of the velocity field measurements performed by means of laser Doppler anemometry and thermoanemometry. It turned out that the considered numerical models did not reflect the experimental measurements quantitatively. This may be due to the small differences in the shapes of the cycloids of the rotor blades in the numerical model and in real geometry.

Generally, the temperature of flue gases at the furnace outlet is not measured. Therefore, a special computation procedure is needed to determine it. This paper presents a method for coordination of the numerical model of a pulverised fuel boiler furnace chamber with the measuring data in a situation when CFD calculations are made in regard to the furnace only. This paper recommends the use of the classical 0-dimensional balance model of a boiler, based on the use of measuring data. The average temperature of flue gases at the furnace outlet t”k obtained using the model may be considered as highly reliable. The numerical model has to show the same value of t”k. This paper presents calculations for WR-40 boiler. The CFD model was matched to the 0-dimensional t”k value by means of a selection of the furnace wall emissivity. As a result of CFD modelling, the flue gas temperature and the concentration of CO, CO2, O2 and NOx were obtained at the furnace chamber outlet. The results of numerical modelling of boiler combustion based on volumetric reactions and using the Finite Rate/Eddy-Dissipation Model are presented.

This paper presents the basic principles of construction of numerical models for 3D viscous turbulent flows through multi stage turbomachines. The great attention is given to such properties of the methods as accuracy, linear and non-linear stability, robustness and computational efficiency. It is shown that these properties can be guaranteed if the implicit Godunov’s type ENO scheme is used. A 3D code FLOWER has been developed within this concept. Using the code the numerical results are obtained for flows through high loaded compressor cascades, a turbine stage, a low-pressure multi stage turbine and a centrifugal compressor stage. The results of optimisation of a low-pressure turbine last stage are presented.

Opis:
Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) plays important role in engines development. The mixture formation in a direct-injection piston engines poses a huge challenge in successful simulations of the engine processes. It is due to the fact that the spray as a two-phase flow complicates the computational process. Moreover, this multiphase flow is not uniform. Three main zones, depending on the distance from the nozzle exit are visible when a liquid is injected. Very dense so called “thick” in a direct vicinity of the injector hole, than “thin” as a result of pri-mary breakup downstream the injector and finally in the certain distance from the injector appears “very thin” region as a result of secondary breakup. It is important to take into account that the liquid phase in various regimes behaves differently and is under influence of different phenomena. The modelling approach needs to take in to consideration all those elements. This paper focuses on presentation of the theory and numerical models for primary and secondary breakup phenomena. The primary breakup is a process that results from a combination of three mechanisms: turbu-lence within liquid phase, implosion of cavitation’s bubbles and aerodynamic forces acting on a liquid jet. Secondary breakup regime occurs mainly due to the aerodynamic interactions between the liquid and the gaseous phase.

The whirlpool separator, used for hot trub separation, is prevalent in the brewing industry. It is a kind of a hydrocyclone inside of which a tea leaf effect occurs, which is sediment accumulation into a cone shape at the central part of the tank’s bottom. This manner of sediment accumulation is caused by the secondary flow occurring in the so-called Ekman boundary layer. This article is a summary of the research, which has been conducted for many years and involved observation, simulation and experimental research on the recognition and formation of the secondary flow accumulating the sediment cone. Secondary flows occurring in a whirlpool were identified through CFD simulation and PIV experiments, and are presented in this paper. Based on their location and direction, an attempt to determine their impact on the separation process taking place in the whirlpool has been made. The secondary flow identification methods proposed in this paper can be successfully applied in other solutions, e. g. structural ones, which involve rotational-flow-based separation.

Besides centrifugal pumps, centrifugal fans are the most common turbomachines used in technical applications. They are commonly used in power engineering systems, such as heat engines and chillers, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, supply and exhaust air systems. They are also used as machines consuming final energy (electricity). Therefore, any improvement in their efficiency affects the efficiency of energy generation and the level of electricity consumption. Many efforts have been made so far to find the most efficient numerical method of modelling flows in fans. However, only a few publications focus on the unsteadiness that may have an impact on device efficiency and noise generation. This paper presents an attempt to identify unsteadiness in the flow through a centrifugal fan by means of computational fluid dynamics and computational aeroacoustics methods. The works were performed using the Ansys CFX commercial software and the results of numerical studies are compared with experimental data.
