Health resort
Opis:
Aim/purpose – The aim of the paper is to explore the evolution of business models of health resort enterprises. The sector is perceived in this research as a case of a particular, traditional sector based on natural (here: balneological) resources which has been undergoing significant changes. In addition to the analysis of the evolution of business models, the purpose was to investigate the role of different categories of resources, e.g. infrastructure or relational competences, in substituting natural resources in the creation of business models. Design/methodology/approach – The exploration was based on a quantitative approach and survey research. The data gathered through the questionnaire were used in cluster analysis which adopted the agglomeration (hierarchical) method, i.e. grouping of features by Ward’s method. Findings – Business models in the health resort sector in Poland have evolved and the major change incorporated their shift from business models focused on an idiosyncratic category of resources, i.e. natural, balneological resources, to business models based on other categories, like human resources, e.g. employees’ competences, tangible resources like modern infrastructure or financial resources (for example contracts). The application of a clustering method facilitated tracing the evolution of business models from various perspectives, such as the importance of interorganiational cooperation, different value propositions, and focus on various customer segments. Research implications/limitations – The research implication for management studies is the recognition and presentation of the categories (archetypes) of business models of health resort enterprises in Poland as well as the characteristics of the evolution of business models within the scope of their components. The primary practical implication from a managerial perspective is to provide the basis for evaluation of opportunities and threats related to the adopted business model when comparing to the alternatives currently chosen by competitors. The major limitation of the research is the small sample size. Originality/value/contribution – The paper presents the results of the original research conducted among health resort enterprises in Poland. The paper identifies and characterises various categories (archetypes) of business models of the health resort enterprises in Poland as well as the evolution of the building blocks of implemented business models. The study contributes to the discussion on the usefulness of resource-based-view (RBV) as a theoretical perspective of business model research. The results are consistent with RBV as well as adhere to competence approach and relational view. From a practical perspective, they offer a recipe (formula) for managers of health resort enterprises interested in introducing changes into their business models.

In this study, we explore the connections between business model adaptation and the success of new ventures. We do so by analysing in depth the business model evolution of three new Italian ventures throughout their first years of life. We try to understand if and how the evolution of these firms’ business models is connected to their success. Our analysis reveals that adapting their business models was crucial to enabling these firms to survive in extremely dynamic environments. However, it did not fully act as a catalyst for their processes of growth and did not increase their profitability.

An additional analysis of banking business models can supply useful tools for understanding the nature of risks related to a given banking business model, and its influence on systemic risk. These tools are useful to market participants and regulation and supervisory institutions. The main goal of this article is an identification of contexts and conditions of the banking business model as a supervisory perspective. This approach allows to perceive its characteristics, aims, and methodology requirements. The supervisory perspective on business models was also compared to other practical and theoretical approaches, creating analytical context. An analysis of European guidelines for business models as a supplementary supervision practice, and their implementation in Poland was performed as well

Companies today face volatile environments, short product life cycles, and changing customer requirements, which is especially the case in high-technology fields. In such environments, concentrating only on technological and product innovations is not sufficient to gain competitive advantages. Instead, companies need innovative business models in order to stand out from their competitors. To successfully change business models, companies require appropriate competencies. Thus, the objective of this research is to identify how companies can prepare their business model(s) to counteract environmental changes flexibly. With the aid of the chosen exploratory, qualitative research design, we investigate companies operating in hightechnology branches. In total, 20 companies participated in our study. The interviews were conducted with CEOs, vice-presidents, product managers or other managers responsible for business model developments. The research revealed that companies can prepare the business model and its elements ex ante through developing capabilities in order to raise the flexibility of the business model. These capabilities have to be developed with regard to several internal and external issues driving these changes.

Opis:
Multisided, digital platforms attract considerable attention in business and academic circles. Seven out of the ten most valuable companies in the world derive much of their value from multisided platforms. The problem of defining and measuring value remains a major challenge in management literature. In this paper I analyze the relationship between the sales (revenue) and market capitalization of companies with digital platform business models. Data was used from a sample of 19 companies that used platform business models in 2017. To assess the correlation, Pearson correlation coefficient was applied. The results indicate that there was a significant positive relationship between revenue and market capitalization in 2017. This suggests that revenue may be used as the main variable in the valuation of companies using platform business models. The results point to future research problems that may be addressed using casebased methodology.

Since many researchers and managers think about the essence, creation mechanisms and limits of the manufacturing model maturity, at this point, the author raises the question related to this issue: what dimensions (descriptions and desiderata) should be considered when conceptualizing this idea? The formulated question became a starting point and a point of conducting a creative synthesis, based, on the one hand, on a detailed analysis of the problem theory, and on the other hand – on the author’s own research. The above question and belief related to the existence of economic demand for results of application nature were the main inspiration to undertake research whose main purpose is to recognize: how the maturity of the business model is understood by selected experts operating in the Polish agricultural machinery sector?

Opis:
In e-business freemium business models have become legitimate. However, current research provides little insight on how the free and premium offering should be employed to lead to growth and success in the long run. The presented research aims to fill this gap by investigating how the property ‘free’ was employed in young entrepreneurial ventures’ business models in the initial life-cycle stages – opportunity recognition, market entry, and market exploitation. We find that various forms of freemium business models are employed through the initial life-cycle stages of a new venture for reasons of trial-and-error, learning, exploration, legitimization and resource acquisition. A freemium business model can also serve as a nascent business model, though without a sustainable monetization component, for finding a sustainable business model through a series of dynamic adjustments. With our findings we contribute to the business model literature in three ways: First, our empirical findings show the many-sidedness of the component ‘free’ in freemium business models. Free users are of importance for network building, exploration and exploitation and growth over time. Moreover, free users enable directly and indirectly further resource acquisition. Second, while previous literature has taken a static perspective, we contribute by illustrating the dynamic process of strategic business model design for growth. Finally, we introduce the concept of the nascent business model which is new to the literature.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to demonstrate that economic, technological and social changes, also thanks to the principle of sustainable development, lead to the transformation of existing and the emergence of new hybrid forms of conducting business activity. On one hand, there is a noticeable expansion of social economy mechanisms that reflect an ‘economic’ approach to providing broadly defined goods and services in the public interest, and there is also resurgence of democratic member-based organizations (DMOs), such as cooperatives with their dual nature and social and economic dimensions. On the other hand, traditional forms of for-profit business are transforming into entities that integrate social and environmental goals into business, known as Sustainability-Driven Hybrid Business Models (SHBMs), and of which benefit corporations (like U.S. Benefit Corporation or Social Purpose Corporation, Italian Societ. Benefit or French Soci.t. . mission) are an example. The transformation and emergence of these qualitatively new organizations is an illustration of the process of creative destruction described by Joseph Schumpeter. The article presents advantages and disadvantages associated with the benefit corporations. The analysis is concluded with the open question of whether legislative intervention is needed in this area, in particular whether it would be expedient to introduce ‘mission companies’ in Poland.

Purpose: The fundamental objective of this article is to discern whether business model maturity is perceived through the prism of the ability to deal with unexpected challenges, overcome unprecedented threats, and use emerging business opportunities (agility) or – perhaps – more as a feature of the organization, which makes a business model less vulnerable to unpredictable external changes or sets it in a better position to make it respond effectively to these changes (flexibility). Methodology: The reconnaissance of opinions requires the creation of a catalog of desiderata that significantly identify agility and flexibility. Theoretical and design layers will use a method of reconstruction and interpretation of the subject literature supported by a discussion within a group of deliberately selected experts. This will be reflected in a set of parameters, on the one hand, characteristic of the categories of agility and flexibility and, on the other hand, reflecting business model maturity. Findings: The conducted research allows us to state that mature business models – as implemented by the surveyed companies – are perceived rather through the prism of the strategic ability of enterprises to quickly adapt to unforeseen and sudden changes on the market (agility category). Originality: The article includes not only academic postulates of agility or flexibility but also practical tips that enable constructing guidelines for decision-makers and managers of the agricultural machinery sector. The study carries a charge of a theoretical and empirical study. It takes into account knowledge and expert experience.

The sustainable business model (SBM) concept emerged as one of the most compelling research topics in contemporary management. The multifariousness of discussion areas and problems related to creating, implementing, and modifying SMBs offers great at is ultimate, which means that it is sustainable in all three dimensions, i.e., in the technological, social, and environmental context, by applying innovations corresponding to these categories (technological, social, and organizational). Particular attention was paid to the discussion on SBM archetypes and a framework describing SBM key features that served as points of reference for further investigations. The paper comprises two major parts; the introduction of the sustainable business model concept is followed by research results. The theoretical part includes a presentation of the most important SBM definitions discussed in the managerial literature. In the second empirical part, based on secondary sources, an illustrative case study of an ultimately sustainable business model (USBM) was developed and discussed.

The purpose of this work is to characterise the cooperative bank sector’s strengths, weaknesses, chances and threats identified by its representatives in Poland, as well as to determine desirable changes in the organisation and functioning of cooperative banks. In analytical terms, the assessments and conclusions were based on presentations and panel discussions of participants of the Forum of Cooperative Bank Leaders, which was held in Warsaw on 17–18 September 2019. It was concluded on the basis of the analysis that although cooperative banks are aware of their weaknesses and strengths as well as they see chances and threats for their operations, they clearly lack consensus on the shape and joint actions in the scope of the development of a new business model. The greatest expectations of these banks are connected with the development of electronic economy and digitisation, which requires considerable financial outlays and organisational effort. The key problem is the insufficient level of integration and cooperation within associations functioning and among them, as well as lack of willingness – even reluctance – of many banks to change the existing model. Greater integration of all entities in the cooperative bank sector is the necessary condition for the improvement of banks’ operations and their further development.

Opis:
Industry 4.0 is a concept which sets out a way of understanding the observed revolutionary changes in the organization of manufacturing processes and their impact on businesses and societies. The scale and scope of changes already underway are seen as so large as to mark the advent of a new industrial age. While technology innovation is widely recognized as a key determinant of firm success in this new age, the role of business models (BMs) and business model innovation (BMI) remains understudied, and therefore potentially underestimated in this setting. Thus, the aim of this paper is to analyze how BMs and BMI relate to technology innovation in shaping the competitive advantage of firms in the age of Industry 4.0. As the topic is far too broad for any single empirical analysis, the author’s ambition is to lay theoretical groundwork for future empirical studies. To achieve that, integration and reinterpretation of several separate streams of managerial literature is required, for which interpretative literature review has been selected as the most appropriate research method. The study shows that BMs (and thus BMI) mediate in the commercialization of new technologies, build on and leverage technology innovation, elicit and foster such innovation, and cause disruption, changing rules of the game and triggering new waves of technology innovation. As a separate type of innovation, BMI can be a source of competitive advantage superior to technology innovation. These findings suggest that focusing on technology innovation while downplaying BMI would result in only partial understanding of the sources of competitive advantage in the age of Industry 4.0.
