Opis:
Human dreams of a long and healthy life are becoming increasingly real. The advancement of medical technology allows to modify the genome or personalised therapy in order to avoid troublesome side effects. This process also leads to the blurring of boundaries between humans and animals. Rats with induced human diseases are used for testing drugs for incurable illness; humanised pigs can donate organs that are compatible with the genome and immune system of the recipient. A brave new human is approaching, and new “human” animals are making this possible. The main objective of the article is to show the differences between the refinement of people and other animals and to analyse this phenomenon from an ethical point of view.

Opis:
Eugenics is a science that aims to promote and develop the innate qualities of the human species using the laws of genetic inheritance, making artificial selections of physical and mental traits, maintaining positive traits or removing those considered negative. In this paper we will illustrate the history of eugenics by touching on several points, from Plato’s early ideas to Galton’s founding of modern eu- genics, to the ideas of American proogressivism at the beginning of the 20th century, to the euge- nic programme implemented by Nazi Germany (AktionT4) during the Second World War, up to the present day with the development of genetic engineering technologies. The new eugenics, although based on science, continues to pursue the same goal as the old eugenics, the development of a superior individual and the elimination of those considered inferior.

In the wake of ecology, man's image of himself and his relationship with- the envi ronment is changing. eTh question arises: what are the implications of the so-called 'ecological revolution' in terms of values? One of the most profound changes is th rejection of the anthropocentrism of that ideology of uncontested dominion ov nature which justifies the idea that it exists only for man, for his utility and pleasu In this context, the environmental issue is also a problem of ethical and education interest, extending the boundaries to the universe and all living forms. hTis paper presents an overview of the most discussed themes of environmental pedagogy, also in relation to technology. In particular, the relationship betw bioethics and ecology is considered, which, in the light of a reinterpretation of t environmental problems of our time, tends towards a vision of man as a benevolent and ethically responsible administrator, thus giving strength to an ecopedagogi education that focuses on man's respect for nature as a whole.

Maximal individualism, which is currently a prevalent trend in the way many patients think, places high hopes in the achievements of biomedicine and assumes that everyone should always receive optimal medical care. Such an approach is in line with many normative and legal acts operating worldwide, including the Declaration of Human Rights. However, its feasibility and effectiveness in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic raises numerous ethical, social and economic dilemmas. The culture of prosperity and excess, characteristic of contemporary Western societies, makes it even more challenging to come to terms with this situation.

Opis:
Innovative methods of prenatal diagnosis allow us to see the development of the fetus and to detect early disorders of fetal development, which may lead to an early diagnosis and possible treatment, or to a woman’s decision to terminate the pregnancy. Therefore, it is very important to accurately inform a woman about the risks and consequences of this life-related issue, even before deciding to perform prenatal tests; and after the results, when a misinterpreted diagnosis may lead a woman to terminate her pregnancy. The obligation of doctors to inform patients is inseparable from the requirement to receive informed consent. The two parts are mandatory for any medical procedure and intervention. The main requirements for the informed consent include rationality, sufficient and clear information, free will, and the form of consent conforming to the legal acts. However, informed consent is not an absolute requirement, as the patient has a right to remain uninformed. Additionally, under certain circumstances, it might be impossible to inform patients, or to receive consent from patients or their duly authorized representatives. Prenatal testing is an integral part of ante-natal care that aims to verify the proper development of the fetus, or to identify potential hereditary or chromosomal diseases at the earliest possible stage. Prenatal testing can be classified as non-invasive or invasive measures, according to the types of procedures In addition to this, according to the aim of the procedure, into diagnostic prenatal testing with the aim of prenatal therapy, and purely diagnostic prenatal testing. Purely diagnostic prenatal testing is closely connected with the problem of selective abortion. Part of this article covers the main problems of informed consent in prenatal diagnostics, by outlining two stages of the process: conveyance before prenatal testing, and interpretation of the results alongside presentation of the possible choices. The legal implications we consider are based on information from other European countries: we name the main questions analyzed by courts, including cases of “wrongful birth” and “wrongful life”; inappropriate information regarding possibilities of abortion; the right of a woman to use all available diagnostic methods; and the allocation of damages to the claimants.

The paper reviews the book written by F.M. Kamm, entitled Bioethical Prescriptions: To Create, End, Choose, and Improve Lives (published in Oxford: Oxford University Press in 2013, pp. 599). Kamm is one of the most prominent analytical philosophers in moral philosophy, known from such works as Intricate Ethics (2007). She defends the rights-based approach to ethics and is also famous from constructing multilayered moral dilemmas. The review poses methodological questions, of whether scientific-like thought experiments performed in a moral lab, and the Method of Hypothetical Cases are able to transform our ethical dilemmas and provide any solutions. In the final part of the review, the first chapter of the book on Tolstoy’s essay (The Death of Ivan Ilych) is discussed in more detail.

One of the issues that emerges with regard to radical human enhancement is the destruction of the intergenerational connections. It is variously envisioned in science fiction, and we can speak of many possible plateaus on which the human continuity, which entails solidarity, can be contested. Contemporary young adult dystopias, such as Shusterman’s Unwind Dystology (2007-15) and The Arc of a Scythe (2016-) cycles, Beckett’s Genesis (2010), Patterson’s Maximum Ride (2005-15) or Wells’s Partials (2009-14), very often conjoin the intergenerational issues typical of juvenile fiction with bioethical concerns in the posthuman and transhuman world. I look at the speculative futures of intergenerational solidarity from the point of view of the biological continuity, the subjective continuity and postgenerationality in an immortal society. In the majority of cases it may be observed how the child-adultdichotomy, with the superimposed adult normativity prejudice, threatens the coexistence of trans- and posthumans with their “parents,” leading to the redefinition of altruism in the wake of the homicidal ALife apocalypse. The relatively broad spectrum of the cases and perspectives I have selected yields a fairly comprehensive picture of contemporary projections of intergenerational solidarity “after the genome” (Herrick 2013).

In the context with scientific knowledge and technical possibilities of modern medicine are rising many ethical, legal, social, psychological, economic, and specifically medical problems, also problems in therapeutic and nursing care for terminally ill and dying patients. Process of dying is moved from intimate family environment into professional institutions - clinics, departments and other health and social facilities. People are for years divided into two camps - some are strongly opposed to euthanasia and others on the other hand believe that in some conditions when the pain is unbearable even after a strong dose of morphine, suffering person becomes only a helpless „victim of medicine“.

Opis:
Objective. The aim of the article is a critical presentation of the typology of consents included in the European Convention on Bioethics and in other formal solutions concerning the gathering of genetic material in institutions called Biobanks. Materials and method. Existing types of Acts of Consent are inaccurate in their scope and possess insufficient information regarding the gathering of genetic material (application, usage, processing) and their final (future and diverse) use. Results. Lack of precise legal regulations on the broad future use of genetic material may result in various formal problems relating both to research participants as well as those commissioning the research. Ultimately, it may lead to various complications with the appropriate legal interpretation of consent and possible claims on behalf of the donors. Conclusions. The presented proposition of consent with a terminal premise is to be applied eventually to legal and formal aspects of the collecting of genetic material. It is a possible solution which would clarify the issue of informed consent, and may be implemented in the regulations of the Convention as well as constitute a self-contained legislative solution to this matter. For example, Polish law in its current form, without the ratification of the Bioethical Convention, allows the collecting of material for genetic testing for determination of the risk of genetic defects in common genetic material from people who are planning to have a child.

Hardly any problem in contemporary theological-moral discourse causes such turbulence as the searching, reflection, and demarcation of the boundaries between good and evil in human acting. A fundamental problem is a criterion or a reference point according to which a person could reliably determine what is good and evil. Divergent theological views in the theological-moral dimension seem to have caused the clear boundaries between good and evil to disappear. Therefore, the crucial question is whether there is still a universal criterion for theological evaluation of a human act, as the situation in theological-moral discourse resembles an areopagus of opinions that have no common point in distinguishing between good and evil. This reflection examines the possibility if the Thomistic ethical analysis of a human act, together with the principle of double effect, may be a reference point for the demarcation of these boundaries.

Opis:
The Artemis Fowl series (2001-2012) by Eoin Colfer is a surprising blend of a James-Bond-style thriller, a science-fiction novel and folklore, targeted at young adult audience. It features a teenage criminal mastermind, who decides to kidnap a fairy for ransom and thus repair his family’s failing fortune. Doing so, he discovers that what people consider magic is in fact fairy technology. In spite of highly technical jargon in which the novel was written, the freshness of the treatment of the topic of fairies and the humorous narration won Colfer an instant success and a shower of awards (among others, shortlisted for the Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year 2001). However, somewhat in spite of the action-packed content, the strength and the attraction of the novels lies in their opening themselves to the problems which appear in the current discussion as a result of the advancements in science. Colfer presents for consideration such issues as cloning, experimenting on animals or genetic engineering. The juvenile quest to discover one’s true self, coupled with bioethical and technoethical concerns, makes the series a powerful question about the place of human beings in the age of the rapid scientific development and about our identity. Embodying many of post- and transhuman concerns, it echoes such works as Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto or Hayles’s How We Became Posthuman. For instance, in the posthuman world the body is essentially malleable: dependent on the mind and the willpower of an individual. It can be upgraded by transplantations and modifications, utilizing genetic engineering and the newest technologies. Colfer brings it to attention especially in the construction of such heroes as Opal Koboi, Butler and Artemis himself. Human enhancement breaches the boundaries of the “natural,” provoking questions about its limitations. The author also undertakes the questions of androgyny and unclear gender roles, resulting from tampering with the traditional image of the body. In the article, I would like to focus on the aspects of the cycles concerning the search for human identity, as the most prominent feature of the cycle. As a contemporary literature’s answer to the current changes, the books should render a fairly accurate picture of the important questions of the present era.
Seria Artemis Fowl (2001-2012) autorstwa Eoina Colfera to ciekawa propozycja dla młodych czytelników będąca zaskakującym połączeniem elementów sensacyjnych rodem z filmów o Jamesie Bondzie, powieści science fiction i konwencji ludowej. Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year w 2001). Podejmując liczne zagadnienia z zakresu transhumanizmu, książki Colfera nawiązują niejako do „A Cyborg Manifesto” Dony Haraway czy „How We Became Posthuman” N. Katherine Hayles.

What is the definition of family? why is the conventional nuclear family being replaced by new types of households? and what are the potential consequences of redefinition of family for society as a whole? These are some of the most important questions. Family ethics and bioethics could be an excellent framework to present the historical and social background of these kinds of phenomena.

This paper aims at analysing the evolution of palliative care in the international context and their role in the path of care for the patient and the family. Method: born in 1967 by Cicely Saunder, palliative care were aimed at assisting the terminally ill, accommodating both the needs of the patient and the family. Not only to be cured or healed, but to be taken care of. The paper examines the definitions of palliative care provided by the World Helth Organization. We observe that palliative care is not only an effective and timely response to the clinical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the sick person and their family in an advanced and terminal stage, but an integrated care to support specialist treatment in the presence of an advanced disease picture; a space for in-depth study for the sick person and the family so that the sick person can consciously and freely choose the available treatment proposals, their limits and their consequences. A treatment path in which the transparency of the proposals is a condition for building a shared consensus with the patient and adequate communication with the family. Palliative care has acquired its own identity, its own role in the path of care for the patient and the family, pursuing the proportionality of therapeutic options and the support of the patient and the family without discrimination, with equity and equality.
