Opis:
The averaged models of switch-mode DC-DC power converters are discussed. Two methods of averaged model derivation are considered - the first, based on statespace averaging and the second, on the switch averaging approach. The simplest converters: BUCK, BOOST and BUCK-BOOST working in CCM (continuous conduction mode) or DCM are taken as examples in detailed considerations. Apart from the ideal converters, the more realistic case of converters with parasitic resistances is analyzed. The switch averaging approach is used more frequently than the other and is believed to be more convenient in practical applications. It is shown however, that in the deriving the averaged models based on the switch-averaging approach, some informalities have been made, which may be the source of errors in the case of converters with parasitic resistances, or working in DCM mode.

Opis:
Objectives: To design and simulate a buck converter and detector circuit which can prognostically indicate the power supply failure. Failure of Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitor (AEC) is considered as the parameter causing the power supply failure. To analyse variation of output ripple voltage due to possible changes in the Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) and effective capacitance of the capacitor and design a detector to detect the failure of power supply prognostically. Methods: A DC-DC buck converter in SMPS topology is designed by assuming an input voltage of 12V with 3 volts possible fluctuations and an output voltage of 3.3 volts is desired. Simulation is carried out to measure the variation in output ripple voltage caused due to aging of electrolytic capacitor using TINA by Texas Instruments. A detector is also designed to compare the ripple voltage and a predefined threshold voltage so as to indicate the possible failure of Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) well in advance by monitoring the output ripple increase. Novelty: Having a fault tolerant power supply is very important in safety critical applications. Here by monitoring the output ripple variation, the degradation of AEC is predicted by calculating the ESR and capacitance variation. This simple yet effective prognostic detection will support in the design of fault tolerant power supplies. Highlight: It is found that, the ripple at the output increases with aging of the electrolytic capacitor, as with time the equivalent capacitance decreases and Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) of the capacitor increases. The designed detector output is found to prognostically indicate the failure of SMPS.

Buck-Converters belong to DC/DC converters group. One of the main problems during the design stage of DC/DC converter is the proper component selection. The aim of this article is to describe selection of the optimal inductor for the Buck-Converter, enabling to minimize the device output overvoltage, while getting possibly high device efficiency. In order to verify the quality parameters, author made an efficiency comparison of the buck converter, depending on used inductor. Conclusions from this paper allow for optimal selection of coils for the Buck-Converter depending on given criteria.

This paper describes new techniques of maximum power point (MPP) tracking for solar water pumping system. The latter system consists of a PV array, a DC/DC buck converter and a universal motor coupled to a centrifugal pump. A conventional hill climbing method is employed to seek the MPP using the motor-pump rotation speed or the pump outlet pressure information. Experimental results are presented and a comparison with conventional algorithm which requires both voltage and current sensors is provided.

Opis:
This paper presents an extended form of Feedback Linearisation Control (FBLC), which is tested in a non-ideal buck converter in Continuous-conduction Mode (CCM). The FBLC is often used in power electronics to control a non-linear system, due to its advantageous properties. The application of the error integrator shows better steady-state and transient properties, such as a decrease of inrush current. The linearised system has been controlled by the pole placement and the technique is illustrated through an example and simulated via Matlab. The results have been compared by using a classical PID controller, allowing the benefits of FBLC to be highlighted.

Large-signal and small-signal averaged models of basic switch-mode DC-DC power converters: BUCK (step-down) and BOOST (step-up) are presented. Models are derived with the separation of variables approach and have the form of equivalent circuits, suitable for a circuit simulation. Apart from equivalent circuits, small-signal transmittances of converters for CCM and DCM modes are discussed. Parasitic resistances of all components of converters are taken into account. A few examples of simulations and measurement results of selected converter characteristics are also presented. It is shown, that neglecting parasitic resistances (often met in works of other authors) may lead to serious errors in an averaged description of converters.

: Averaged models: an AC large signal, DC and AC small signals of a currentcontrolled buck converter are described. Only peak current mode control of a converter working in the continuous conduction mode (CCM) is considered. The model derivation differs from the typical approaches presented in the literature and doesn’t refer to the multiloop concept of a current controlled converter. The separation of the variables method is used in the model derivation. The resulting models are presented in the form of an equation set and equivalent circuits. The calculations based on the presented models are verified by measurements and full-wave PSpice simulations.

The paper presents a comparative analysis of the two resonant based converter topologies. The converter topologies selected are LLC resonant converter and the Quasi resonant converter. The modeling, analysis and control of both the converter is done and presented here for the case of the photovoltaic (PV) emulator. A PV emulator is basically a DC-DC converter having same electrical characteristics that of solar PV panel. The emulator helps to achieve real characteristics of PV system in a better way in an environment where using actual PV systems can produce inconsistent results due to variation in weather conditions. The complete system is modelled in MATLAB® Simulink SimPowerSystem software package. The Simulation results obtained from the MATLAB® Simulink SimPowerSystem software package for both topologies under steady and dynamic conditions are analyzed and presented. An evaluation table is also presented at the end of the paper, presenting the effectiveness of each topology.

Opis:
An investigation into the design of a stand-alone solar water pumping station for supplying rural areas is presented. It includes a study of system components and their modeling. The solar water pumping station comprises a solar panel, DC/DC buck converter, DC motor driving a centrifugal pump, and a reservoir. The fuzzy-based maximum power point tracker is developed to optimize the drive speed and the water discharge rate of the coupled centrifugal pump. These use dN/I, d(dN/dI) use parameters, and a variation of the fill factor∆α as input variables. The proposed solution is based on a judicious fuzzy adjustment of a converter fill factor, which adapts online the load impedance to the solar panel. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the drive system for both transient and steady-state operations. Hence, it is suitable to use this fuzzy logic procedure as a standard optimization algorithm for such solar water pumping stations. The modeling is carried out in MATLAB/Simulink.

This article deals with the subject of simulation of power losses and thermal processes occurring in semiconductors, as illustrated by an example of a DC/DC buck converter. The simulations were performed in PLECS software. The results obtained from the program were compared with measurement results of a laboratory converter model. The physical model is based on the same components as assumed in the simulation. Similarly, the parameters of the transistor control signal were the same. During operation of the converter, the temperature changes were analyzed using a K-type thermocouple. Based on the obtained results of the temperature measurement in the steady state of the converter operation, the correctness of the simulation carried out in the PLECS program was verified and confirmed.

Opis:
Photovoltaic (PV) system generates renewable energy from sunlight, which has low efficiency due to the variance in nature of temperature and irradiance in a fast changing environment condition. Different researchers have proposed different maximum power point tracking MPPT techniques to improve the efficiency. However, still there are many open issues. Thus, to address this, a non-linear back-stepping-based higher order sliding mode controller (BHOSMC) is proposed to harvest maximum power from PV system. The PV module and load is interfaced by a non-inverted buck-boost converter (NIBBC). A linear interpolation method is used for voltage generation and Lyapunov stability is used to verify the control system equation. MATLAB/Simulink software is used for testing the proposed controller performance. The experimental result verified that the proposed BHOSMC is robust, accurate and fast tracking, faultless and less chattering as compared to perturb and observe (P&O), back-stepping control (BSC) and back-stepping-based sliding mode control under rapidly varying meteorological condition.
