Opis:
This study is to analyze the effectiveness of an incentive-based obesity management program (the Midas Project aimed to improve good health habits) at an electronics company in 2005. A total of 95 company participants with a high body mass index (BMI) were recruited for a health promotion program for 3 months that awarded gold medals as an incentive for body fat loss. BMI decreased from 28.8 to 27.8 kg/m² (p = .000), body weight decreased from 87.2 to 83.5 kg (p = .000), and body fat weight decreased from 25.4 to 23.3 kg (p = .000). Systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased from 130.5 to 125.1 mmHg (p = .002), from 86.4 to 81.7 mmHg (p = .009). The percentage of participants exercising more than 3 times per week increased from 27.3 to 52.3% (p = .000). The percentage who avoided overeating at parties and midnight eating increased from 65.9 to 72.7% (p = .767) and 70.5 to 84.1% (p = .172), respectively. This incentive-based obesity management program was effective in improving not only BMI but also health status.

Opis:
The built environment, which refers to human-made or modified features of the physical neighbourhood, such as homes, schools, workplaces, or parks and recreational areas, undoubtedly has a great impact on our lifestyles and health behaviours. The objective of this paper is a review of the literature on the correlations between neighbourhood environment and weight status of local residents. This paper presents factors in the built environment which may be related to overweight and obesity prevalence among local residents, resulting in changes in energy balance and affecting BMI. The focus is especially on the relationship between the distance from home to parks and green spaces and physical activity levels, and between the access to fast food restaurants and BMI status or obesity prevalence among residents. The results of recent studies are inconsistent, primarily because of several limitations and methodological problems, and due to multifactorial and complex relationships between the built environment and lifestyle. However, with the still unsolved problem of the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity, even small changes in individual health behaviour may be important and have a positive impact on the reduction in BMI over time. Therefore, all activities aimed at shaping neighbourhood environments in ways which facilitate healthy food choices and create opportunities for as well as encourage physical activity should be supported.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to conduct a literature review examining predictors of lost-time injury, illness and disability (IID) in the workplace, with a focus on obesity as a predictor, and to evaluate the relationship between obesity and losttime IID. The study objective was also to analyze workplace disability prevention and interventions aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle among employees and reducing obesity and IID, as well as to identify research gaps. The search was conducted in several major online databases. Articles included in the review were published in English in peer-reviewed journals between January 2003 and December 2014, and were found to be of good quality and of relevance to the topic. Each article was critically reviewed for inclusion in this study. Studies that focused on lost-time IID in the workplace were reviewed and summarized. Workers in overweight and obese categories are shown to be at a higher risk of workplace IID, are more likely to suffer from lost-time IID, and experience a slower recovery compared to workers with a healthy body mass index (BMI) score. Lost-time IID is costly to an employer and an employee; therefore, weight reduction may financially benefit both – workers and companies. It was found that some companies have focused on developing interventions that aid reduction of weight and the practice of active lifestyle among their employees. Introduction: Yoga is becoming increasingly popular and widely available form of physical activity. It is believed that yoga practice has a beneficial effect on the practitioner's body even with a small amount of exercise. There are also studies confirming the usefulness of yoga practice in the fight against obesity, which is a serious health problem of the 21st century. The aim of the study: Analysis of body composition of people who regularly practicing yoga, analysis of the relationship between body composition and anthropometric parameters, as well as a comparative analysis with people not related to yoga practice. Material and methods: The study ultimately included 42 women who were divided into two groups. The group of yoga practitioners (G1) consisted of 21 women aged 24-59. Out of 46 tested women who did not practice yoga, 21 women were selected due to age and height as close as possible to women from group 1. Group of non participants in yoga (G2) consisted of 21 women aged 23-62. The body composition was performed using TANITA BC 420 SMA analyzer, which uses BIA method. Anthropometric measurements were made using the SECA 201 measuring tape. Results: Statistically significant differences (p <0.05) between women practicing yoga, and women not related to yoga occurred in body weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, fat mass, muscle mass, lean body mass and total body water. Women who practice yoga had lower BMI, waist circumference and hip circumference than women in second group. Interestingly, only 10% of women practicing yoga expressed their intention to reduce weight, in non yoga practitioners it was 81% of women. Conclusions: The results show that people practicing yoga are characterized by normal body weight and waist circumference, and they have lower body fat content and BMI index compared to nonpractitioners. In addition, it can be stated that regular yoga practice contributes to a better body perception.

Vertical jump test (VJT) is one of the important determinants of physical fitness. VJT score in school going children of West Bengal, India has been reported. However, pertinent data in young sedentary Indian males and females are unavailable. Moreover, the relationship of VJT with anthropometric parameters and different components of body composition has not yet been explored in Indian context. Debatable findings have been reported regarding the impact of body composition on VJT score. The present study was aimed to evaluate the VJT score in young sedentary Indian university students and its relationship with anthropometric parameters and different components of body composition with special reference to gender variation. Healthy sedentary university students (males n=40 and females n=40) with similar socio-economic background and age group of 21–25 years were randomly sampled for the study from the post-graduate section of the University of Calcutta, Kolkata, India. VJT was evaluated by Sargent Jump Test, and body composition was determined by skinfold measurements. Body height, body mass, %Fat, Total Fat (TF), LBM and VJT score depicted significant (p<0.001) difference between male and female groups. The VJT scores obtained in the male and female groups were in the range of below average and poor, respectively. Physical parameters did not influence the VJT score in both genders. In the present study the VJT score exhibited significant (p<0.001) negative correlation with %fat, individual skinfold, sum of skinfolds, and TF. Hence, body fat content posed as a hindrance to achieve higher jumping height, especially in females, where the lean mass helped to achieve greater VJT score in males.

Introduction. Blood pressure (BP) is a complex entity which is influenced by many factors. The impact of socioeconomic class and body mass index (BMI) on hypertension has been reported in the past but literature on their influence on blood pressure in healthy adolescents is very limited. Aim. The aim of the study is to assess the influence of BMI and socioeconomic status on BP in healthy adolescents. Material and methods. This cross sectional study includes three hundred healthy adolescents. Anthropometric and BP measurements were done. BMI categories were derived using WHO Asia Pacific guidelines. An updated Kuppuswami scale was used for determining socioeconomic status. Multiple regression analysis and analysis of variance was used to study impact of socioeconomic and BMI classes on BP. Results. Obese subjects of upper socioeconomic class have higher blood pressure values. Strong significant differences in the mean values of systolic blood pressure (f-23.569; p<0.00001), diastolic blood pressure (f-22.470; p<0.00001) and mean arterial pressure (f-27.454; <0.00001) were observed in different BMI classes. Except for diastolic blood pressure (f-2.713; p <0.030) rest of BP indices did not differ significantly in different SES classes. Conclusion. Obese subjects of upper socioeconomic class are prone for development of future hypertension. High BMI is significant risk factor for high BP, however socioeconomic class of the subject should also be considered as predisposing factor for high BP.

Objectives: The association between psychosocial work dimensions (i.e. demand and control) and obesity has been found to be inconclusive, indicating that individual differences factors might also contribute to explain the variability in BMI. Materials and Methods: The interaction between work dimensions and personality variables in a group of male and female workers (N = 506), and its associations with BMI were analyzed with a cross-sectional study with self-report data. Hierarhical regression analyses were used to predict the BMI levels from work and individual differences variables and their interactions for males and females. Results: The main effects of personality variables were not significant, physical workload interacted with neuroticism for males, whereas control interacted with activity for females. Conclusions: Psychosocial work dimensions and personality traits were related to BMI for men and women. These outcomes reinforce the notion that different models might account for the explanatory mechanisms of BMI in regard to sex.

On the one hand, the number of individuals with excess body weight is increasing, while on the other, the issue of malnutrition among adolescents is becoming increasingly noticeable. Aim: To determine differences in the magnitude of secular trends in height and body mass, BMI, and the occurrence of underweight, normal weight-to-height proportions, overweight, and obesity in adolescents. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted from 2006 to 2021. Height and body mass were measured, and BMI was calculated. The results were statistically analyzed. Results: In the examined girls and boys in the decade from 2006 to 2016, a slowdown in height growth and slight positive changes in body mass and BMI were observed. The results from 2016 to 2021 confirmed a continued trend of increasing somatic characteristics, mainly body mass. Considering the BMI value in both observation periods, a slight decrease in the frequency of underweight and normal BMI was noted in all groups, while a significant increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity was observed. Conclusions: The temporal trends presented in this study emphasize the need for regular monitoring of the development of adolescents in eastern Poland, as well as the implementation of proactive public health strategies.

Introduction. In effect of the ageing process, there are involutional changes in older adults both in the mental and in the physical spheres. Some factors may slow down the ageing process. Physical activity is one of these factors. Physical ability is one of the most important indicators of quality of life of older adults, and it can be shaped by physical activity. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess chosen factors that influence physical ability of adults older than 65 years. Material and methods. The study involved 63 older adults. The criterion for inclusion in the study was the age - older than 65 years. There were 37 women and 26 men in the study population. All the subjects were able to walk without assistance, and they had no contraindications to do functional tests. We used a questionnaire of our own design, three SPPB trials, Up&Go test; we calculated the BMI indices and assessed depression scale. Results. We found that older adults rarely engage in physical activity. The low level of physical activity of the older adults was reflected in equally low physical ability level, as assessed by functional tests. We found a directly proportional dependence between body mass and the level of functional limitations and risk of falls. Conclusion. In our functional tests, we found a statistically significant correlation with regard to age and BMI index.

Vitamin D plays a role not only in the remodeling of bone, but also in functions involving other organs. Its tissue availability depends on dermal synthesis and/or ingestion from diet, as well as on the amount of adipose tissue binding vitamin D into its cells. This study evaluates vitamin D concentrations in relation to body-mass index (BMI) in healthy people aged over 60 and living in the Subcarpathian Province of southeastern Poland. The study involved 246 participants – 172 women (69.9%), 74 men (31.1%), with an average age of 6.9 (±11.9). The mean concentrations of vitamin D, assessed with ECLIA method, was 18 ng/ml, which indicates a marked deficiency in vitamin D. Defined vitamin D deficiency (<20ng/ml) was noted in 62% of participants without any difference between males and females. There was no correlation between BMI and vitamin D deficiency in the studied group. The results suggest the need for vitamin supplementation in healthy people aged over 60 according to the guidelines.

Background. Onset of overweight and obesity has been previously reported as a result of population migration to western countries. Objective. To determine the nutritional status, weight status and their association with socioeconomic status in sub- Saharan settled in El Jadida city in a Mediterranean country Morocco. Materials and methods. A descriptive study was carried out in 2018 on 256 sub-Saharans migrants living in the city of El Jadida in Morocco. Information on socio-economic and socio-demographic characteristics as well as anthropometric measurements was collected. The body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity by measuring waist circumference (WC) and waist circumference to hip ratio (WHR) and the distribution of body fat by calculating the sum of skin folds are determined. Results. Analysis results indicate that height, waist circumference, hip circumference, sum of trunk skinfolds, total sum of skinfolds, and BMI increase with age. The prevalence of underweight decreases with age, overweight was 38.7% in the youngest age group (18-25 years) and reached higher values after 35 years (44.10%). In addition, the prevalence of general obesity (based on BMI) increased with age and abdominal obesity (based on WHR and WC) was more marked in sub-Saharan people aged 26 to 35 years. These results also reveal the coexistence of underweight, overweight and obesity in all age groups. The analysis revealed a significant association between several variables and obesity. Significant associations were found between age and BMI (P=0.04), between level of education (university) and WHR (p=0.02), between sex and WHR, and between sex and WC (p=0.049). The study revealed also that the majority of the study sample gained weight after their settling in the host country. Conclusions. The study data show that obesity including overweight and abdominal obesity were prevalent among sub- Saharan migrants residing in the city of El Jadida. This prevalence is associated with socio-demographic and socio- economic factors.

Introduction. A severe epidemic of lifestyle diseases, including obesity, is now one of the biggest problems of modern medicine. This is a medical problem, social and economic. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of selected perinatal and environmental factors on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in preschool children located in the Subcarpathian region. Materials and methods. The survey was conducted in 2012, it included 200 children between the ages of 3 to 6 years (87 boys and 113 girls) from kindergartens. In children, weight loss was measured on an electronic balance and their height was also measured on medical scale. Obesity was determined on the basis of criteria developed by the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF). Results. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among preschool children was found in 3-year-olds (6.4%), 4-year- olds (11.3%), 5-year-olds (17.7%), and 6-year-olds (20.7%). Conclusions. Body weight and mother’s BMI are factors that significantly increase the risk of obesity among children aged 3–6. Additionally, in boys, a risk factor is also the birth body length.
Materiał i metoda. Wyniki. Nadwagę i otyłość stwierdzono u 6,4% 3-latków, 11,3% 4 -latków, 17,7% 5-latków i 20,7% 6-latków. Wnioski. Czynnikiem znamiennie zwiększającym ryzyko otyłości wśród dzieci w wieku 3–6 lat jest masa ciała matki i wskaźnik BMI matki. Dodatkowo u chłopców czynnikiem zwiększającym ryzyko jest urodzeniowa długość ciała.

Opis:
Background. In the elderly, nutrition significantly influences biological aging and physiological and pathological changes in the body. A balanced diet and physical activity are the key to good physical and mental health. Objective. The aim of this study was: (1) to perform nutritional screening tests in senior citizens residing in eastern Poland and (2) to evaluate the risk of malnutrition in elderly people who live with their families, seniors who live independently, and residents of nursing homes. Material and method. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) screening tool comprising a questionnaire with 22 questions and an abbreviated and survey-adapted version of the questionnaire (KomPAN) were used to investigate eating habits and self-perception of health and nutrition. A total of 398 correctly filled out questionnaires were selected and the resulting data were subjected to statistical analyses in the Statistica 10 program. Results. The BMI values of most respondents were indicative or malnutrition or risk of malnutrition, regardless of gender (mean BMI 23.88 kg/m2 ±5.08). Most overweight and obese respondents were female (p=0.0001). The observed decreased BMI values was significantly (p=0.0012, rs= 0.6714) correlated with lower food intake. Unintentional weight loss greater than 3 kg was most frequently noted in respondents living in nursing homes and living independently (p=0.0021). Eating difficulties also considerably influenced the respondents’ nutritional status. The respondents’ BMI values were significantly correlated (p<0.0001) with their MNA scores, the average MNA score was 21.0±4.4, (rs = 0.7293). Overweight and obese respondents were more likely to consume at least three meals daily (OR=1.87; 95% CI: 1.32-2.06; p<0.001). Conclusions. The BMI values and MNA scores of the tested subjects indicate that the majority of the surveyed respondents were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition, regardless of gender. In the present study, the residential environment significantly influenced the patients’ nutritional status, in particular in respondents with impaired motor abilities and eating difficulties.
